Has a tidal wave ever hit the US?
Yes. In 1964, a 220-foot wave hit the southwest part of
Alaska. The earthquake that caused it measured 9.2 on the
Richter scale. Hawaii has also experienced tidal waves.
How often do tidal waves occur?
Fortunately, tidal waves do not occur often. On average,
they occur about every six years in the Pacific Ocean.

Malpractice Of The Mouth
by Rhoberta Shaler, PhD
Is your mind your greatest asset? Do you suffer from
malpractice of the mouth? That is the malady that occurs when
the mouth enrages before the mind engages! You may work with
someone afflicted!
There is no room in the workplace for verbal violence. None!
It is inappropriate, unacceptable, and, definitely,
unprofessional. No allowances for verbal violence should be
made for educated and mentally competent adults in positions
of authority. NONE!
Folks who yell and curse (and some who add obscenities) are
using their words in the same way they would use their fists.
It is no more sophisticated. It is both a sign of lack of
skills and a symptom of unmanaged frustration. They need
help--help to express their feelings and their need for
control appropriately.
Should providing this help be the responsibility of the
organization? That is an important question. Employees who are
doing an excellent job in most areas are the consideration,
aren't they? They are valuable and they have a 'people skills'
gap. The good news is that people skills can be taught. The
bad news is that some folks do not want to learn them. So, the
first assessment that must be made is the willingness of the
employee to examine and improve their skills. No number of
training hours can make a person change.
A few years ago, I was delivering a program on managing
difficult people successfully. As this is a program I often
deliver, some agencies regularly sent folks to it. One woman
appeared in the course three times in three years. At one
break, she complained to me, "I just don't know why they keep
sending me on this silly course. I know it by heart. It's a
waste of their money." Well, I knew why she was there. She was
the 'difficult person' and she just would not internalize the
information being given to her. You know, we may all be
someone else's idea of a difficult person at times. This woman
was the poster child. She was bright enough. She was able to
grasp the concepts, but, she simply would not apply them to
herself. Perhaps, she is still being sent to that same course.
and still complaining about it!
Confrontation is not a 'four letter' word. Neither should it
employ certain four letter words. To confront simply means to
meet face-to-face. A confrontation adds the dynamic of
differing opinions. It is possible to have a conversational
confrontation when folks have skills and willingness.
Verbal violence is most often a scream for attention, a
misguided demand for respect or an attempt to exert control.
All three come from fear. Certainly, you can understand those
fears, however, two things must happen to make the workplace
safe. The violator must change his or her ways, and, the
violated must express their boundaries. Verbal violence is
clearly harassment. It has no place in the workplace. Yes,
every now and then, mistakes are made, tempers flare and
apologies are accepted. That goes with the territory of being
human. It is when verbal violence is a management style that
steps must be taken. Whether you are managing other folks or
managing your personal life, violence leads to alienation, the
very thing the violator is seeking most to avoid!
First things first. If you are the violator, stop! Step away
and reflect on your needs for attention, respect and control.
Are they healthy? Are they serving you well? Are they
appropriate in this circumstance? If not, find help. If you
are the violated, remember, anytime that you take their bait
and participate in the verbal violence loop, you are letting
them get away with it. Anytime you cower and retreat, you are
also letting them get away with it. Simply say that you find
the treatment unacceptable and that you are willing to have
the conversation when it can be done in a respectful dialogue
and move away. Yes, I know that sounds simple and is not
always easy. It's your first step. Also tell the violator
that, if change does not occur, your next step is to inform a
higher authority of the verbal violence, the harassment.
Then, do it.
Remember, you are responsible for teaching people how to treat
you...everywhere.

I Wish Doctors Had More Time to Listen.
Then You Wouldn't Be Looking For Your
Own Solutions On The Internet. (How To
Use The Internet Knowledge And Still Keep
Your Doctor!)
PART 2 of 10
For instance, you speak of a sore throat and a trained
health care professional would look in your throat and
probably see redness
a sign. You would describe the
tightness and pain: symptoms. Anyone could see the
redness... Only you could feel the pain and describe it.
You mention a sore throat
and they would be looking
in your throat: not your chest or lungs or heart. If you
had a whitish coating on your tongue, they would not
be looking at your liver for an initial assessment. Another
sign would be fever (elevated temperature). They could
FEEL your forehead or take your temperature with a
thermometer. A sign: a fact. But only you could describe
the heat you feel and the possible dizziness or lack of
energy. Blood coming out of any part of the body other
than a regular menstrual cycle is a sign of a problem.
There are signs, not visible to the eye, that could only
be confirmed by what are known as diagnostic tests.
This now becomes apparent with things like X-rays.
So a broken bone would be a sign on an xray, but look
normal to the naked eye. Blood test, sputum cultures,
CAT scans detect signs, but require more indirect
investigation. They need a trained health care
professional's attention and time to listen. Signs are
objective. We can all become aware of them if
someone points us in same direction. Symptoms
are more subjective. Often your emotions are involved.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

They were animated and excited about the
return of the traders. Every time someone came
home from a trip the village was excited. This was
one of those days Eloise helped prepare for with
the women. At the arrival back from a trading
trip, usually twice a year, there was always a big
celebration and an extra large and long evening
fire. The women had food all ready to go and
tonight would be a long and wonderful night.
It was terrific the way all the villagers
looked after all the children as if they were
their own. Eloise lost sight of Sammy for a short
while, but looking down at the river's edge she
spotted him being carried by one of the village
women. Everybody looked after the village
children.
Paddling against the current meant the canoes
traveled slowly. Their speed was easily less than
half that of going down river. From the time they
were first spotted until the time they beached
their canoes was nearly five hours. With heavily
laden canoes it took that much time. They had been
easily spotted, of course, because of the two lead
canoes, the one with Mazunta and Eloise carved up
front and the other with Midnight carved up front.
There were no other canoes like this on the river.
The men had traded for the usual bolts of
cloth and a few staples needed by the village.
They did not ever bring home gifts for the ladies
or the children. To do so would be unfair to
others whose men did not go on the trip. As a
result no one expected anything. They were happy
just to have their men back home.
David found Pam and Mazunta found Eloise, then
they each found their own kids. All got a big hug
from Dad.
The villagers set about the task of unloading
the bounty contained within the canoes.
Mazunta and Eloise came over again to Sam and
Alewka. They sat down on the grassy area that
separated the beach from the jungle. "Well, it is
nice to be back. That is hard work paddling those
canoes up river. We had a completely uneventful
trip. There were no incidents and all went well.
We stopped in to see the village those folks set
up just down the river from us. It looks like they
are doing well."
"I'm glad. They went through a lot. I hope
they can rebuild. What was their reaction to your
visit.?" Eloise knew who Maz had been speaking
about.
"Maz means a village of people that came to us
from up stream. There were some drug dealers who
moved in here and caused some trouble. The village
Maz is talking about is what remains of a village
that used to be up stream. The drug lord came in
and shot everyone he saw. Very few escaped and
they came here. After a cooling down period they
decided to set up there own village about ten
miles down river from us."
"One thing about higher law, as you were
telling the story I was able to see the whole
picture. I am glad you dealt with the drug
runners. They ruin thousands of lives."
"I know that Dad, but those who take drugs
make their own choices. They can say no. I realize
there are some who are forced but mostly it starts
out with peer pressure . They think they
are having fun and the first thing you know they
have ruined their lives. Too many graduate into
hard drugs and then it is too late. I saw a man
the other day when we were visiting your place.
When we were in school together he was a sport
jock and was healthy. He was into all sorts of
sports and I really thought he was going to be a
winner all his life. When I saw him the other day
I couldn't believe it. He was slow of speech,
couldn't think straight, had little or no memory.
Whatever he was on fried his brain and now he will
be lucky if he can support himself. Kids don't
realize either, that taking any kind of drugs is
deadly harmful for babies. These young girls get
themselves pregnant while on drugs and it has
devastating effects on the children. Hospitals are
full of such children. It is a scourge on
society."
"I think you are saying they need to be
taught. It is too bad, really. They should be
brought up to realize the consequences of their
actions. The parents aren't communicating. The
things taught at home before they are age seven
are what will determine the outcome of the child
in later life. When a child is raised without
discipline one can hardly expect him/her to impose
discipline upon themselves later in life."
"That is what I mean. Yet I know that over the
centuries the pendulum has swung many times. There
is nothing new under the sun."

HA! HA! HA!
My Bedside Table
Old age is catching up with me,
From my toes up to my head.
I felt it most while gazing
At this table by my bed.
I laid my hair piece over there,
My own has grown quite thin.
The hearing aid is next to it;
I'm deaf 'til its put in.
Also, I can't see a thing,
Without my glasses on.
They're beside my false teeth;
Yes, my own are gone.
I kinda get the feeling
As at those things I stare......
There's less of me here in this bed
Than on that table there
