TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

What is phrenology?

What was the US population at the start of the Civil War?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Who was the "Venus Hottentot"?

Northern Europeans at the end of the nineteenth century had
a tendency to believe that they were at the top of a human
"evolutionary tree," and that other races, including the
Hottentots, were at the bottom. Charles Darwin's "The Origin
of Species" (1859) and "The Descent of Man" (1871) were
being applied left and right to justify domination by
European peoples over other peoples. The Venus Hottentot was
the skeleton of an African woman that was measured and
examined by French scientists as part of a new discipline
that sought to show that criminals and "savages" were less
evolved than European "civilized" peoples. One of the
scientists who examined the Venus Hottentot actually
pronounced: "I have never seen a human head more like an ape
than that of this woman."

What was criminal anthropology?

"Criminal anthropology" is the above-mentioned "scientific"
discipline, which rested on the assumption that criminals
(as well as non-European "savages") could be recognized by
physical characteristics that indicated a more primitive
state. The Italian physician Cesare Lombroso pioneered the
discipline and for years prisoners were measured and their
physical characteristics carefully recorded as data.
According to Lombroso, "born criminals" could easily be
recognized, even before they committed crimes, by their
"enormous jaws, high cheekbones, prominent superciliary
arches, solitary lines in the palms, extreme size of the
orbits, handle-shaped ears found in criminals, savages, and
apes, insensibility to pain, extremely acute sight,
tattooing, excessive idleness, love of orgies, and the
irresponsible craving of evil for its own sake."

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------

Be Clear!

Let's face it -- English is a crazy language. There is no
egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine
in pineapple.

English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries
in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which
aren't sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But if we explore its
paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing
rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor
is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing,
grocers don't grocer and hammers don't ham? If the plural of
tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth? One
goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices?

Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one
amend, that you comb through annals of history but not a
single annal?

If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but
one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preacher praught? If a
vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? If
you wrote a letter, perhaps you bote your tongue?

In what language do people recite at a play and play at a
recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses
that run and feet that smell? Park on driveways and drive on
parkways?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a
wise man and wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and
oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are
alike?

How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell
another.

Have you noticed that we talk about certain things only when
they are absent?

Have you ever seen a horseful carriage or a strapful gown?
Met a sung hero or experienced requited love? Have you ever
run into someone who was combobulated, gruntled, ruly or
peccable? And where are all those people who ARE spring
chickens or who would ACTUALLY hurt a fly?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in
which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you
fill in a form by filling it out and in which an alarm clock
goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it
reflects the creativity of the human race (which, of course,
isn't a race at all). That is why, when the stars are out,
they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are
invisible.

And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I
wind up this essay, I end it.

The above was written by someone who had the time to think
of such craziness as shows up in the English language, not
I.

It reveals some of the difficulties we have in our
communications, just trying to keep them clear so those we
are speaking to can understand.

The same, of course, occurs in writing, and, so, our web
sites must be well thought out, not only for the message we
want to say, but using the word we have chosen are we really
getting the message across.

Something a lot of us don't take into account is that gay
doesn't only mean sexual preferences. I was born in a time
when that particular meaning was never attributed to the
word.

Sometimes we forget there are regional differences in a
country where a word may may be understood altogether
different on each side of the continent. Now the internet
has linked us all together, the ethnic, racial and cultural
diversity makes it very important to select our words to be
understood by the majority, at least, of our readers.

I have heard it said we should write as if we were
addressing those with a Grade Six level reading skills.

It, by no means, infers that is the level of intelligence.
It does mean we can communicate with the lowest common
denominator. Additionally, we should all understand the
purpose of communication is to get a message to someone
else. Using words with which others are unfamiliar is no
help to the cause.

There are two things that will have an outstanding effect on
you upward mobility in a successful career, clear
communications and an amazing memory. The two are linked.

Be Clear!

The Inflammatory Process
A Special Gift From Nature To You
PART 11 of 12

Remember that every chemical going into your body creates a
change. That is why you are taking it. So it follows that
multiple chemicals will create multiple changes. Know what
they are and if they are the changes you really want to have
in your body.

Life is a series of causes and effects. You cut your finger
and you bleed. You plant a seed and something
grows…hopefully. You get dust in your eye and your eye
weeps. Said another way, for every cause there is an effect.
If you know that to be case, you can now look for the
underlying cause, when you get a result or effect you don’t
like.

Ask yourself why you drink or smoke or take any recreational
drug? It’s to create a change in your body. The same can be
said for eating artificial sweeteners and fat-free foods
instead of more healthy things. You already understand how
to make changes in many areas not related to your health.
Think of it this way. If you don’t like the balance in your
bank account (effect), you have choices to make changes
(cause). But you need to pay attention to the “bottom line”.
So as we worked through these examples I trust you kept in
mind that you may well already have the answers within your
environment: either a mental or physical answer. You can
choose to do something or not do anything.

Now study and research the concept so it makes more sense to
you. Check out all your sources. This process is called “due
diligence” and it is something you do naturally for many
other parts of your life. Do it here as well.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

"Don't worry, Papa. We will take care of everything. The
wedding will be wonderful and it will not cost you anything.
We would like to have it right here, in the yard, if that is
okay with you and Mama." Oomano always knew the way around
her Father's heart. Of course it would be all right.

The truth is that wedding was the single most
significant day in Miguele's life since the day he first met
Missy. There were over 100 people there, not counting the
kids from Riata's orphanage. But for the kids nearly all the
people lived by higher law. Maybe six or eight did not,
plus, of course, Miguele and Abetta.

Sien conducted the wedding, not a regular religious
cleric. In a way this did not surprise Miguele, but what
happened at the end of the ceremony sure did.

Jesus appeared and offered his blessings upon the union
of Oomano and Romano. Plus in one step, he removed all
impediment to living by higher law, in all those who wished
to do so. In the very instant Jesus spoke, Miguele and
Abetta stepped over the veil of simplicity. In that instant
he began living by higher law.

Here, in China, at such a wonderful occasion, he was
near in tears. He loved this Missy, standing beside him,
with all his heart. Meeting her had changed his life so much
he could hardly believe it. He reached over and took her
hand and squeezed it.

Eloise looked at him and smiled. "I know. It has been
wonderful hasn't it? And there is more to come."

Miguele smiled weakly up at her. and mouthed, without
sound, "Thank you." She squeezed his hand.

The group was now getting ready for beverages. Riata,
once more came over to her Father. "Papa, that was a most
wonderful ceremony. You've been crying. Are you all right,
Papa?"

"I'm fine my pretty one. I just was thinking way back to
the day when I tried to rob Missy and her friend David. I
was so desperate that day I could think of nothing else to
do. That was such a lucky day for me I can hardly believe
it. Now I have everything and look at you. Look at what you
have accomplished and look at the love you receive. My heart
is so full, my dear daughter, that I can hardly stand it.
You are a wonderful girl. Thank you for coming to live with
us. I love you very much."

"Oh, Papa. I know. I remember those old days too. I
remember when we were so poor we had nothing to eat. Missy
turned your bad act with good motives into a good result.
You are right, it was a very good day when you ran into
Missy." Riata winked at Eloise (Missy) standing right there.

Eloise began to move off as Riata pulled her Father to
his feet and gave him a big hug and kiss. These two always
were close as Father and daughter.

Oomano, the kids and Romano approached the couple
hugging. "Very good sis. I am proud of you. You have done so
well. Romano gave Riata a hug, and the two kids hugged her
legs. Riata laughed and got on her knees to be at the kids
height, then gave them each a big hug.

Juanita was always a bit shy. She did not yet live by
higher law and was still carrying on her back the stigma of
being a gang girl. In this company especially, she was
conscious of that.

Riata gave her one look, then held out her hands and
sent love into the woman. "From this instant there is no
longer any impediment to you living by higher law. It is
solely your choice."

Juanita collapsed like a rag doll. The love was that
intense she was supported upon it. She fell because the
removing of all impediment took away her internal
support mechanism. She had been leaning on that gang girl
thing for so long it was a crutch, now no longer there.

Riata continued to send love into Juanita. Slowly the
woman rose. This was not the Juanita who fell. This Juanita
had a smile from ear to ear. She appeared well fed and
healthy, rather than hollow cheeked and sad. She had tears
in her eyes. She knew, at the core of her being, she could
now live as the others around her lived. She was so thankful
she was crying. She leaned up against Oomano and reached out
for Romano's hand. Then she came to Riata and hugged her.

Such was the order of the day. It was impacted with love
and joy.

When all the festivities were over the guests said their
goodbyes and began to leave. This time Juanita knew how to
get home on her own. She, though a fledgling, wanted to try
it on her own.

Sien left, as did Sonora, Hemno, Kenyata and Mombudo.
Next to leave were Eloise and Mazunta and the kids.

Sam and Alewka were going to stay a couple more days at
the orphanage, if only to be near Tom and Tlang.

Tim and Sharon said their goodbyes, gave everyone a hug
and they were off.

It was approaching nightfall and the kids began to build
a fire. The day had been such an enormous day of change that
everyone just wanted to sit by the fire and do their own
thinking. Drinks were available for those who wanted them
but other than Sam and his coffee, no one moved.

The love that was emanating from the group at the fire
was strong. It carried for thirty yards in all directions.
Even the vegetation absorbed it, as did all or any wildlife
within the circle. Mice, beetles, ants, mosquitos, all felt
a renewed zest for life. The mosquitos, of course, were not
permitted to land on anyone. That message was contained
within the love.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

O.K.: Where did we get the expression "O.K."?

From the Presidential election of 1840. The Democratic
candidate, Martin Van Buren, was nicknamed "The Wizard of
Kinderhook" - after "Old Kinderhook", the Hudson Valley
village in which he had been born. In reference to this
village and Van Buren's nickname one of the Democratic
groups formed to support him in New York City called itself
"The Democratic O.K. Club." Other supporters of Van Buren in
New York picked up the term "O.K." as a sort of slogan, and
Democratic rowdies used it as their war cry in their
attempts to break up meetings of Whigs. the phrase caught on
generally and soon established itself as synonymous with the
feeling of the original club members that they and their
candidates were "all right."

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

"We are all pilgrims on the same journey… but some
pilgrims have better road maps."
---- Nelson De Mille

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

This IT manager works at a manufacturing plant where, he
says, friendship is thicker than employment.

"Management has often suspected some of the good ol' boys
clocking in their buddies who routinely come in late," he
reports. "The union contract specifically stated no
surveillance systems are allowed, and management couldn't
prove anything until the day one of the gang called in sick
shortly after his shift started -- but he was already
clocked in!"

Plant boss is at his wits' end. But the manager gets an
idea. He's already made friends with one of the plant's more
popular workers, who likes to tinker with computers, and
thinks the guy might be willing to help.

"I was happy to give him obsolete equipment and help him
with computer problems, so we'd built a nice rapport," he
says. "And he was an honest fellow -- in fact, he was quite
upset that the others were stealing from the company.

"So the morning after a long holiday weekend, he went out
and stood by the time clock with a laptop and looked up at a
dark area of the ceiling 45 feet high. Then he looked at the
screen and hit some random keys.

"He did this a few times until he made sure some of the
workers noticed him out there, and then he went back into
the office.

A little while later, the manager sends the worker out to
stand by the clock and wave his hand at the ceiling. After a
minute or two, he comes out of the office and tells him,
"That's great, thanks."

It's not long before other shop workers ask their co-worker
what he was doing. "He just replied, 'Oh, nothing,' with a
big grin," the manager says. "They put in a camera system,
didn't they?' to which the worker just replied, 'I don't
know what you're talking about.'

"Rumors of a surveillance system spread like wildfire. The
union obviously couldn't prove that a camera system was
installed, because there never was one.

"And the good ol' boys stopped clocking in their buddies --
because now they thought they'd get caught for sure."
