TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

What is an "Achille's heel"?

What is a caduceus?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Is it true that both sides in the Civil War wanted Robert E.
Lee to command them?

Yes. Both the Union and Confederate forces offered Robert E.
Lee the position of commander. Lee opposed slavery and
secession, but he accepted the command of the Confederacy
out of loyalty to his home state of Virginia. He did this
even though he personally believed the Confederacy could not
win.

What mythological female was turned into a spider?

Arachne was turned by the Greek goddess Athena into a
spider. Arachne's problem was her pride. She was really good
at weaving, one of the household arts sacred to Athena. She
was SO good that people started comparing her work to that
of the goddess herself. The proper thing to do in that case
is to politely deny it and remind your fans that NO ONE is
as good as the goddess. But Arachne just ate that stuff up!
And when the goddess Athena herself appeared to her in the
guise of an old woman to give her a second chance to show
some humility, she didn't. Instead, she dared to challenge
the goddess to a weaving competition. Things went downhill
from there. Athena went first and wove a tapestry that
depicted prideful humans being punished by the gods (a
warning, you might say). Then Arachne went. Her tapestry
actually WAS better than that of Athena. But it was also
terribly insulting, showing the gods engaging in immoral
behavior. Athena destroyed it and Arachne, devastated, tried
to hang herself. Athena turned her into a spider (a weaver)
instead. That's why we call spiders "arachnids."

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------

Justify All You Want! - - to Your Peril!

The answer to one of life's great mysteries! I haven't heard
anyone explain this as well as the all-wise Cliff Clavin, on
the sitcom Cheers. One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was
explaining the Buffalo Theory to his buddy Norm...

"Well ya see Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can
only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd
is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back
that are killed first. This natural selection is good for
the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of
the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of
the weakest members.

"In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as
fast as the lowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol,
as we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks
the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, reg-
ular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells,
making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's
why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

If there is ever a trait of human character that
consistently stands out it is that trait where he justifies
everything he does to those who are willing to listen.

For a lot of men and women they seem to have to explain
everything they do. They are continually justifying their
behavior, as if they must answer to you or the next person.
Interesting, isn't it. They never do things because they
want to, they must always have a reason they think sounds
good to you.

Further, these are the kind of people that border on the
honesty line, for if they can't come up with a good reason
themselves they are prone to blaming others for their need
to act a certain way.

Cliff found what appears as a sound reason for drinking
beer, as if that was somehow more important than the fact he
just wanted to drink beer.

I wonder how many times we do that in our life. I wonder how
many times we justify our actions where there is no need for
it.

Somehow it makes me think we feel guilty of doing something
we shouldn't. That is what comes across when you justify
your actions without being asked.

Yet, the worst place in the world for us to justify our
actions is within our own heads. Try to fool others if you
will, but trying to fool yourself leads to disastrous
results. It is the certain precursor to failure.

The more we try to fool our own mind, the more our own mind
begins to believe us.

Then, when we want to program meaningful material into our
minds, it not only doesn't know what to believe, it is
usually in conflict with all the thoughts we have already
given it in justifying our actions.

If you want your mind to work for you the first criteria is
honesty with your own self. Without it you haven't a chance
at succeeding at what you want.

The Brain And Spinal Cord
Parts Of Your Body's Nervous System
Part 2 of 6

The Invisible Picture
The body had two distinct nervous systems to control the
performance of all functions. (There is not enough space in this
article to give much detail about either one.) One is called the
Central Nervous System (CNS), and as it implies, regulates all
the central activities. The brain and the spinal cord handle
that. The other system is called the Peripheral Nervous System
(PNS), and relates to the nerves outside of the brain and the
spinal cord, but all are connected. (I won't mention much in
relation to the PNS here.)
http://www.neurosurgery.org/health/images/spinbodybig.gif

Most people have seen a picture of a brain. It is a "mountain"
of soft tissue with many folds. If you stretched these folds out
to their full length, it would cover a very large area. Your
body is an extremely efficient machine, with no wasted space and
many "innovative" built-in, space-saving ideas. (Many other
parts of your body are similar.) Each part of your brain is
being used for a specific purpose. Each cell, each space, each
"everything", is there to support another function.

The brain is "divided" into two parts or hemispheres for the
cerebrum and cerebellum, and then further into lobes. The
cerebrum is the largest part, cerebellum is next in size, and
the brainstem, with no division, is the smallest. The chief
responsibility of the cerebrum is the control of its nerve
centers for sensory (sense) and motor (muscle) activities. The
cerebellum is responsible for coordinating motor activities and
balance maintenance. It would appear that their functions
overlap, but they don't and are quite specific. The brainstem,
although the smallest part of the brain is in control of such
vital living functions such as respiration, heart rate, and
digestive activities.

The neuron is the smallest part of the nerve and it has a
nucleus and a cell body...and acts as a transmitting station.
Coming from it, are dendrites and axons. They are important
elements. Dendrites receive or capture the message. Axons
transmit it. (This again is in very simplistic terms.)
Connecting two neurons (or cell bodies) is a space called a
synapse. It is in this space that actions of many of the newer
drugs are being used. These chemicals are called
"neurotransmitters". Can you see how drugs are then used at the
beginning of the nervous system to alter a "natural" brain
activity? A nerve is a collection of neurons in bundles. They
operate in bundles and naturally will perform similar work. It
takes many bundles to do each action or task.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to
http://www.the-pebble.com OR order yours from
your favorite bookstore. ISBN # 1-4137-4723-X

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

"Man has separated himself from his Maker, therefore man
suffers. Man can again reunite with his Maker and reap the
benefits of that love.

Man believes he is separate of his Maker. He is taught
to think that. The symbolic story of the Garden of Eden is
where man first begins to think he is separate. He is taught
that at a very early age, and everything the child sees
around him would support that theory, and that is all it is,
a theory. Man's Maker lives in each and every person in
earth. There is no separation except in man's mind. Man has
arrived at a point where he thinks that if he should
consider he is God or that God lives in him then that is a
blasphemous thought. The truth is that to think contrary to
that thought is blasphemous.

Man governs himself by ego rather than listening to that
still, small voice from within. If he would learn to listen
to that voice he would end up arriving at his destination
faster and with little or no difficulty. Further, that is
just in life as man knows it. If man really wanted to delve
into where that small voice comes from and attempts to get
to the source thereof, then man's life changes forever. He
then learns higher law and becomes a Master, after which,
and only after which, he has dominion over all things.

Man, today, thinks he is smart. He thinks he has
dominion over all things. Yet the more he learns, the more
he realizes he has far more to learn than he has
accomplished already. He learns there is a huge universe out
there of which he knows nothing and that there are areas
right within his own life where he knows nothing. To say
man, today, has dominion over all things is an ego driven
statement that is ridiculous to the extreme and only points
out how foolish man can be."

"Isn't man only interested in controlling his own small
world, his life and what is happening in it?"

"Oh! The wisdom that comes from the newly observant.
Sure, that is what he wants, yet most can't even do that.
They fail to understand the universal law 'As ye sow, so
shall ye reap'. They see that as a cute axiom but he thinks
that applies to everyone else but him. He does not take that
law into account when he takes action. That is what Jesus
meant when he said that narrow is the way and straight is
the gate and few there are that find it. The only way is to
follow the very first of all the commandments 'Love thy God
with all thy heart, with all thy soul and with all thy
mind.' Then understand the law of sowing. Do these two
things and your life will be what your Maker wants for you.
You shall have only peace, prosperity and happiness.

If man chooses paths other than this then the law works
against him. It is only when one seeks his Maker within that
his life begins to take on the real shape both he and his
Maker want for him. Man must learn to discard the image
that his God is a person, sitting on a throne somewhere,
willing only to judge him and punish him. His God, his Maker
lives within his own breast and the sooner man goes there to
establish communication, the sooner man's life becomes what
he wants."

"Billy, why does not man do that?"

"It is the same here in China as everywhere else in the
world. Man is taught early he must toil to survive, that, if
lucky, he might live to be four score and ten years (70). He
is not taught the great commandment or the laws. He first
must contribute to the household. Even in his childhood
years, when there is a chance to reach a child, he is taught
instead to work. Like a flock of seagulls on the beach one
is chastised if he dare express thoughts outside the
accepted and expected norm. Think on that. The level of
man's expectations is what he sees in front of him. He
expects nothing else. How sad that man elects not to see the
life he could have if he but looked. His Maker even promises
it to him. Seek and ye shall find. Ask and it shall be given
you. Knock and the door shall be opened unto you. These
things your Maker has promised."

"Can we help, Billy?"

"Yes, of course. In your life you will be asked many
times to go help mankind in all sorts of situations. Yet in
speaking to man you can be an example, you can even discuss
the topic of higher law, but you can never 'sell' man on the
idea. Each man must come by choice. You are not permitted to
make him see. If he comes not by his own choice but by your
forceful persuasion, and he decides thereafter he wants not
to live that way you will have harmed him greatly. He will
be unable to find the life he had before you wrongly
influenced him and you will therefore be responsible for his
unhappiness. The consequences shall fall upon yourself. Each
man is exclusively responsible for everything that happens
to him, period. None are exempt from this law.

Man thinks that for some unknown reason he has an
illness. Saying nothing about any other reason why man
should have such a problem, man must learn that all such
things first begin within his own mind. He draws upon
himself all things. If he doesn't like what he is getting he
must learn to change his thinking first. He can change his
diet, his actions, his desires, but if he does not change
his thinking his life will remain the same."

"Looks like we have a lot to learn, Billy."

"Sure you do. We all do. Yet when you live by higher law
the knowledge you need at any given moment is made available
to you. So fear not that you have a lifetime of learning.
That is what life is, a continual expansion of your
knowledge. Stop that process and death soon follows."

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Mackinaw: Where did the "mackinaw" get that name?

The term was first applied to the gaudy blankets issued by
the Government in the 1820s and used in Indian trade,
especially at the trading post of Mackinac, Michigan - which
had been named Mitchimakinak by the Ojibway Indians. The
jackets were first made of this colorful blanket cloth; and
since "Mackinac" is pronounced "Mackinaw," they were called
"Mackinaw" jackets.
