thePEBBLE - 12/06/05 - Always Be Ready!
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
A typical, obviously American, community. Two young people
given an opportunity for an a adventure with an attainable
financial reward. Their adventure into the inkonwn, not
restrained by dogmatic rules or community restraints, leads
them to resources that change no only the two adventurers'
attitudes, but attitudes of others.
The reader will either come away with a a feeling of
wonderment or question the writer's declared source, his
Maker, for the content.
I was not envious of the characters' adventures but enjoyed
the book as it refreshed the wonderment I had as a youth and
now as a practical adult, to "think outside the box" about
powers that are within us.

It took me back to my youth and now inspires me to "think
outside the box".

Who was Lorelei?
Lorelei was a siren in Germanic legend whose beautiful

Is it dangerous to keep your engine running while refueling
your car?
According to the Washington Post's Dr. Gridlock (Ron
Shaffer), who writes a regular column on commuting in the
Washington DC area, it is very dangerous to leave a car
engine running while refueling. The practice is also
illegal. What could happen? A spark could ignite gasoline
vapors, or the "glow" from underneath a running engine could
ignite spilled gasoline. Violation of this code, at least in
the Washington DC metro area (Dr. Gridlock points out), is
considered a Class 1 misdemeanor and is punishable by a fine
of up to $2,500 and a year in jail.

Always Be Ready!
The Pope, Billy Graham, and Oral Roberts were in a plane
crash over the Atlantic Ocean. Tragically they all died and
went to the pearly gates together.
St. Peter was surprised to see them. "Oh, dear! We weren't
expecting you and your quarters aren't ready yet. We can't
take you in and we can't send you back!" Getting an idea, he
picked up the celestial phone and called Lucifer. "I have
three gentlemen who are ours, but their places aren't ready
yet. Could you put them up for a couple of days? I'll owe
you one."
The Devil reluctantly agreed.
Two days later, St. Peter got a call. "Pete, this is
Lucifer. You have to come get these three guys that are
yours. This Pope guy is forgiving everybody, the Graham
fellow is saving everybody, and Oral Roberts has raised
enough money to buy air conditioning!"
While just a joke this little treatise above shows what
havoc can arise when you aren't prepared for what you want.
In other articles I have written on this subject. I continue
to be amazed when I see someone working away so hard, in the
belief they will be very successful, yet they haven't got
their book work ready, or their delivery systems, or they
have no plan for the money they believe they will receive.
If there is one universal law we should all understand it is
this.
"Opportunity presents itself to those who are ready for it."
In fact, opportunity will present itself to you, ready or
not. But if you are not ready you will clearly blow it.
For example, history shows that the one thing that destroys
most businesses, is not the lack of money, but the abundance
of it. That's right. When success comes on it comes on fast
and if you are not ready for that, the abundance of money
throws you off course.
If you have not forethought your systems, procedures,
policies, it is too late when success begins to happen. Your
job now, is to plan for all the eventualities you can see in
your future. If you don't they will not come about, or you
will not avoid problems that could have been avoided.
All success is ninety eight percent preparation and two
percent inspiration.
There are those who say I can set things up when I need to.
Wrong. With that attitude, you'll never need to. With that
attitude you are clearly not ready for the success you say
you want.
In truth, if you want success, you must show the universe
you are serious. You must show the universe you are ready.
For it is then you get what you've been planning on. No
plan, no fruit.
If you want the success you claim then . . . . .
Always Be Ready!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson
The Brain And Spinal Cord
Parts Of Your Body's Nervous System
Part 4 of 6
The brain is the control center of your body. It gives all the
other parts of your body voluntary and involuntary commands to
keep you going. It keeps your heart beating, your lungs
expanding and contracting. It keeps you upright, sitting or
lying down in whatever position you choose. It keeps you running
for the bus or driving your car. It helps your kidney filtering
out waste products. It keeps your spleen filtering your blood.
And keeps your liver from re-circulating toxins back into your
body. It makes you tap your toes in rhythm to your favourite
music. It makes your mouth water when you THINK of lemonade and
made you weep when you watched Princess Diana's funeral. Your
brain controls you and you control it only to the degree that
you want to stay healthy.
And how does this now very important part of you stay attached
to your body? By very strong, soft (connective) tissue connected
to your backbone. This part is also known as your spinal column
or your vertebrae. Have you ever wondered when you see a skull
in a movie or show, why it doesn't have a chin? It's because
that part is "held on" by a support system that gets decomposed
very quickly and so it falls away. It takes much longer to
decompose bone than softer tissue.
We then have this perception that the jaw (mandible) is not part
of the body's skeleton, but it is. And it's an important part
because it "houses" the eating mechanisms. Foods are turned into
usable nutrients, which in turn support your body in many ways.
And your spine or spinal column or vertebra is attached in much
the same way. It has to be connected with something that will
allow movement...articulation. There are many medical terms what
describe the specific locations, but we won't go into that
detail here. For our purpose, it's important to know that the
neck has to be able to move in different directions at will. It
is linked to the skull by connective tissue.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure

Mombudo had heard Sonora scream "BILLY" then suddenly
disappear around the corner of the hut. Then he didn't see
her for quite a while, so he went to see if there was
anything wrong. There was.
Mombudo saw his daughter laying in the grass with Billy
Hendricks. He saw them kissing, hugging and whispering to
themselves. In that instant he knew his daughter was in
love, that she would leave home and marry. The only good
thing about it was that eventually she would bring home
grandchildren.
Yet, Mombudo was not an ogre. He was deep down happy for
his daughter. He loved to see young love and it particularly
pleased him it found his girl.
He knew Billy lived by higher law and he had heard good
things about Billy. Then he knew Billy had come into the law
by way of Sam and Alewka Henry and the boys. That was all he
needed to know. He knew his daughter had chosen well and
that she would be looked after in all circumstances.
That was when he told the kids to come to the fire. He
has turned around and was heading back to the fire. He was
seating himself and about to explain what happened to his
wife, Kenyata, but by then Billy and Sonora came around the
corner of the hut and in one look Kenyata knew what was up.
She put her hand over her mouth and let out a small
whimper. Tears welled up in her eyes. She was happy to the
core of her being. That Sonora found someone and it was
someone whom all the family liked and who lived by higher
law was a miracle in itself. Kenyata sobbed, then rose to
welcome Billy. She hugged him and then she hugged Sonora,
all without saying a word.
Neither Billy, nor Sonora spoke. They knew there needed
to be a few moments so everyone could gather their wits.
They sat down, side by side.
One look and Hemno, too, knew what was up. He saw Sonora
leaving also. He was seeing himself as taking over her role
in the family. He well knew his turn would come, but for now
he was happy for Sonora. He walked up to Billy and shook his
hand and then he turned to Sonora and hugged her. He didn't
do this kind of thing often, so to Sonora it meant he was
really happy for her. She gave him a kiss on the cheek.
Kenyata had regained her composure and was now offering
everyone a beverage. She wanted to everyone to have one
because she wanted to propose a toast.
When all had a beverage she raised her glass saying "To
the young lovers!" Everyone repeated the sentence and put
their glasses together before sipping from them.
Sonora was a little embarrassed. She did not consider
herself a young lover. The concept had not yet entered her
mind, but she knew that is what she was. She blushed.
"We saw you two making eyes at one another at that
function for Riata. We knew it was a matter of time. It must
have hit you hard for it sure didn't take much time."
Mombudo laughed as if he had discovered a joke before
everyone else.
They all laughed with him. He was laughing so that his
tummy was jiggling right in front of everyone. They got a
charge out of that.
"Sir, may I court your daughter?"
When he quite laughing Mombudo responded. "Most
certainly, young man. We would be pleased. We are proud she
has picked someone we know and whose reputation is a good
one. Welcome."
Now it was Billy's turn to blush.
They sat around the fire and chatted of upcoming events.
They discovered nothing where Sonora would be needed,
neither Billy.
"Why don't you two go for a walk down on the plains. Get
to know each other. I'm sure there are a hundred things for
you to talk about. We'll be having supper in three hours. Be
home for that."
"Thank you, Mom. Do you need a hand for supper?"
"Get out of here. No I don't need a hand for supper.
What do you want, silverware and white linens?" Kenyata
laughed and scooted Billy and Sonora away from the fire with
the broom that suddenly appeared in her hand.
Laughing and joyful the kids took off running around the
corner of the hut and down the hill. They were soon out of
breath and tried to stop. The hill made it difficult. They
stumbled and rolled. Finally Billy "saw" them as stopped and
they came to a halt, disheveled and dirty, but laughing.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine Billy, I'm fine. She moved closer to him and
the pair of them sat on the hill overlooking the great
herds.
They talked and chatted, kissed and hugged and talked
some more. They talked about everything young lovers talk
about. They wanted to know if each other had other
boyfriends or girlfriends. They wanted to know what each
thought of marriage, of children, of where they might live
when together.
In between the words there were kisses. Soon they were
up and walking down the hill, hand in hand. They swung their
hands as if there were a pixie sitting on them wanting a
swing.
Soon they were on the plain, laughing, talking hugging,
kissing. The love they broadcast from themselves was so
strong that all the animals stopped grazing to have a look.
Young love was appreciated by all living things. Even
those that might attack them stopped and watched.
Stopping to kiss her he fell head over heels in love
with her again. He loved her smell. He loved her hair. He
loved her close to him. Billy was transported to another
world by this woman he loved, this woman he called Sonora.

TOMORROW - - - The budding romance
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Take A Gander: Why do we use the phrase "take a gander" to
mean "take a look"?
The month after a wife's confinement was once called "gander
month" or "gander moon" - in allusion to the aimless
wandering of a gander while the goose sits on the eggs.
During this period the husband was called a "gander mooner"
- and pleaded a certain amount of indulgence in matters
pertaining to sex. So, originally, to "take a gander" was to
"take a walk and give the gills the eye" as a "gander
mooner" would do. The phrase as we use it today retains some
of this meaning.

HA! HA! HA!
To help a friend lose weight, I told her that she should
switch to lower-fat foods, including skim milk. When she
said her family would drink only whole milk, I suggested
that she keep their regular container and refill it with
skim milk. This worked for quite a while, until her daughter
asked one morning whether the milk was okay.
"Sure, it's fine," my friend answered, fearing she had been
found out. "Why do you ask?"
The daughter explained, "Well, according to the expiration
date, this milk expired two years ago!"
