ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
If you're caught in a thunderstorm, will your car tires
protect you from being struck by lightning?
No. Lightning is powerful enough to travel through or around
rubber. However, your car is still a good place to be during
a storm. If lightning strikes, it will probably travel
around the metal shell of the car and you'll be unhurt. Just
don't touch the metal!
Are cell phones in a car dangerous?
The makers of cell phones like to convince you that cell
phones will make you safe by giving you a way to get help
when you break down or have an accident. That may be so, but
using a cell phone while driving makes you more likely to
HAVE an accident in the first place. According to research
published in the New England Journal of Medicine, you are
four times more likely to get into an accident when using a
cell phone, even if it's the kind that is hands-free, than
if you are not using one. The problem is not holding the
phone, but the distraction of talking. Is talking to a
passenger just as dangerous? No. Passengers are able to stop
talking when they can see the driver is having problems and
they also can look out for danger and give the driver
warnings.

The Importance Of Uninterrupted Time
Have you ever been right in the middle of writing the
perfect sentence when a co-worker or spouse appeared at the
door with a need? Ever been working on a proposal and just
as it really begins to come together your phone rings? Not
only are these events annoying, irritating and downright
infuriating, they are extremely inefficient uses of your
time.
Research has shown that, when in the middle of a creative
project, it takes up to twenty minutes to return to the same
high-level of productivity following an interruption. That
one fact alone could transform workplaces, couldn't it?
How do you create uninterrupted time? First, the work
culture has to address the issue. Where there are cubicles,
interruption can be constant. Your own level of
concentration, then, becomes critical. Can you block out
unwanted stimuli easily? Can you see people coming up to
you from your work station? One of the truly disruptive
things both physically and emotionally is the jolt you get
when a person speaks to or touches you unexpectedly. It's a
good idea to create a rear-view mirror for yourself if you
cannot see folks approaching your cubicle. When you have to
overcome both the mental interruption and the shock to the
body, that's even more disturbing!
If you have an office door, you're lucky. Consult your
schedule and block out times when that door will be shut.
You may have to educate other staff members to the meaning
of your closed door. At one business, I saw a sign on a
closed door that read, "If you are thinking of knocking or
opening this door, you really don't understand why it is
closed!!! Think again." That may or may not work for you,
however, it did make the intruder stop and think.
Does that telephone really need to be answered every single
time it rings? Probably not. Does email have to be
answered within thirty seconds of its arrival? Probably
not. If not, what would it take for you to unhook yourself
from the demands of those two instant communication systems.
Develop the habits you need to be the most effective and
efficient.
Constant interruption kills any hope of effective time
management. One solution is to create regular meetings with
the folks with whom you interact most at work. Use that
time to address non-pressing issues and to foresee upcoming
needs. Be pro-active. Head crises off at the path. This
will cut down on your interruptions.
So, what if you are the lowest person on your work totem
pole? That's tough from the perspective of minimizing
interruptions. You may, in fact, be seen as the most
available person in the office. You can still assess your
workload and make suggestions as to when is the best time to
bring you tasks or ask for information. If you are very
wise, you will make those suggestions sound like clear
benefit statements to the staff, e.g., "In order for me to
give you the very best service, I would like to have all
your requests before 2 PM. That way, it is likely I can
respond to them today."
At home, the same thing applies. Everyone needs quiet,
uninterrupted time. Recently I was working with a coaching
client who has a demanding job, a new baby and a husband who
travels extensively for his work. Carving out at least one
half-hour of uninterrupted time for herself is taking some
persistence. Everything seems to be more demanding than her
promises to herself. She's changing that quickly. Some
folks seem to take much longer. How about you? Are you at
the top of your totem pole for some time every day?
Give yourself the gift of uninterrupted time. The returns
are amazing.

The Brain And Spinal Cord
Parts Of Your Body's Nervous System
Part 5 of 6
The body has a system where two immovable objects are linked by
something that is flexible. And of course it has to be strong
enough to stay connected. And the entire body needs this same
flexibility throughout your knees, your back, your toes, etc.
It's the same concept as an articulating bus, going around a
sharp corner. And your spinal cord, as the extension of your
brain, needs this protection all the way down. The brain has the
solid bone cover of the skull. The vertebrae are similar chunks
of bone, with a hole in the middle for the spinal cord to run
through. But as each vertebra also needs to "articulate" or move
freely or flex, there is protection for the fragile spinal cord
in the form of cartilage and special cushion material to absorb
jolts and stress. Again you have to be able to walk, flex your
back, lift things, and be in a variety of positions. So not only
does the back have to flexible, it needs to be strong. And the
bones are "made" to reflect that need.
Just as the brain is divided into sections for ease of
identification, so is the spinal cord. Its function is to carry
messages to and from the brain and relay them throughout the
body. It also has a special function called reflex. This is best
shown by the action of you putting your hand on a hot stove and
withdrawing it immediately.
The spinal cord has five "sections and 31 sets or pairs of
nerves. These are identified by their (anatomical) locations:
cervical (at the neck) with 8 pairs of nerves. Thoracic at the
chest with 12 pairs. Lumbar by the back area with 5 pairs.
Sacral around the lower back with 5 pairs of nerves, and lastly,
the coccyx, with 1 pair of nerves, at the tailbone. As you can
see they obviously "service" their respective areas.
Why would these structures have to have all this protection?
It's already been mentioned that the brain is the control center
of the ENTIRE body, and the spinal cord is an EXTENSION of it. A
non-functioning brain ends up in a non-functioning body.
Interpret the term "accident" as an interruption of service. And
the damage all depends on the location and severity of the
affected (brain /spinal cord) part. If you have a stroke (CVA)
or a degenerative condition, the accident or degenerative
condition happens in the brain as a leak or broken blood vessel,
or mis-function. The results show up in the body in most cases.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------
Yet, young love was hard on the lovers. They wished to
hold off on sexual activity until they were wed. Because of
higher law, they knew the rewards for abstaining until it
was recognized as acceptable. Oh, the easiest thing in the
world is to get involved in premarital sex. That isn't tough
at all. The hard thing to do is to refrain from such
activity, and, like most things that are hard to do, it
comes with a compensatory reward. The attitude of
confidence, of trust, of joy, of being friends who have
overcome, all these are rewards for abstaining until the
time is right. It goes a very long way toward dealing with
people in an upright fashion. It means that one has not
cheated on himself or herself. That one point alone is a
huge factor in self discipline and and even larger factor in
living by higher law.
If one cannot deal with temptation, how can one control
the mind? One is faced with temptation at every corner. The
temptation to smoke, drink liquor, do drugs, gamble,
premarital or extramarital sex, to eat, to be lazy, there is
no end of temptations that reach out to us everyday.
Yielding is the easiest thing in the world. That takes no
effort or brains. Abstaining, refraining from participating,
that takes a person of courage and control. Guess which one
your Maker would want on side?
So the test was on. Billy and Sonora, like Tom and Tlang
and Amenti and Reno, were facing this challenge. That each
would face up to it and conquer their own feelings in the
matter was not in question. Each wanted the rewards that
came with overcoming temptation. Each wanted to control
their own minds such that they would further enjoy the
fruits of higher law.
As man progresses to that end he encounters many
temptations. Some he knows and recognizes but many traps
there are that can be set by his own mind, assumptions made
and clever disguises put on detours that detain one from
reaching the sought after goal. Man must think long and hard
on the fact there is only one goal and only one way.
Every church will tell you their way is the only way.
Yet it is not so. In every religion there is written the
way. In every religion it is the same way, the only way.
Look where you want, the way is the same and it has nothing
to do with religion.
Even when one looks around at what is commonly thought
of as self improvement literature, all those writings are
based on the essential truth and the underlying principles
therein are the same, but disguised as showing you a way to
greater riches.
One of the worst temptations is that of thinking that
developing abilities are amazing, wonderful, super. Sure
they are yet they are not the end of the road, they are not
the goal. They only trip you up when you begin to think you
can "foresee" or "forecast" or "experience psychic
phenomenon". Always remember that straight is the gate and
narrow is the way and few there are who find it. The only
answer is to continue, go past the exciting things until you
reach home. When that happens there shall be no doubt in
your mind.
The same with sexual matters. They will take you miles,
days, months, years away from your objective if you let
them. The choice is yours, always yours. And they were
Billy's and Sonora's, too.
Walking along on the Serengeti they saw things in a
whole new light. This light was fostered of love, the human,
emotional love. They saw a new beauty. They saw beauty where
they had not seen it before. They saw birth, death, living
all as part of the wonderful system. They saw the natural
order of things, the harmony, the balance. These things, for
some reason were making a mark on their minds. They saw that
there had to be order, harmony and balance. They saw that if
any one of those ingredients was missing then things didn't
work out. They saw all those things in nature and all parts
thereof, both in the microcosm and macrocosm. Experiencing
the emotion of human love was opening their eyes, hearts and
minds to their Maker's world in ways they had not seen
before.
They both looked at each other. There was amazement on
their faces, an incredulity that can only come from wonder.
Why had they not seen this before? Why had the pieces to the
puzzle eluded them? They were granted the opportunity to
look at themselves, their sexual desires and they saw how
all that fit into the scheme of things. That desire was only
the life force wanting to once more to be expressed. It was
a natural, evolutionary part of the whole scheme and it was
wonderful. Billy and Sonora saw that they were about to play
a role in the play of life. They were quite willing to do
that, and thankful.
So hand in hand they walked amongst the animals on the
Plains of the Serengeti. This whole area was teeming with
life. It was almost as if this was the birthplace of all
life.
The call came in that supper was near ready. They turned
around and headed home. They had walked for near five miles.
Amazing how time and distance can fly past when your mind is
on other things. They decided to walk until Kenyata called
in earnest. Then they would travel by higher law. That call
didn't come for another fifteen minutes.
They walked and kissed and hugged. Billy couldn't
believe Sonora. She came at him always as if she were a wild
thing. She was definite in her approach and not the least
bashful or reserved. It was not as if she were an easy
woman, far from it. But she had chosen and Billy was the one
to whom she would give her all. He loved it but wasn't
prepared. He had to slow down a little or he would lose
control.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Take A Tip: How die "take a tip" come to mean "take a
hint"?
This tip is from "tip off", which in turn comes from the
expression "tip the wink" - that is, tilt the eyelid a bit
to give a hint.
