<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
A typical, obviously American, community. Two young people
given an opportunity for an a adventure with an attainable
financial reward. Their adventure into the inkonwn, not
restrained by dogmatic rules or community restraints, leads
them to resources that change no only the two adventurers'
attitudes, but attitudes of others.
The reader will either come away with a a feeling of
wonderment or question the writer's declared source, his
Maker, for the content.
I was not envious of the characters' adventures but enjoyed
the book as it refreshed the wonderment I had as a youth and
now as a practical adult, to "think outside the box" about
powers that are within us.

Does anything live that far down in the ocean?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Where does saffron come from?
Saffron, according to Harold McGee, (author of books on
cooking and chemistry) consists of the stigmas (3 long parts
found on the inside of the flower) of a crocus (crocus
sativus) native to the Mediterranean. Some quick facts from
McGee: It's the most expensive spice - (at several hundred
dollars per pound in 1984 - probably more expensive now),
and harvested by hand. One ounce of saffron is made from
13,000 stigmas - and each plant has only 3 stigmas. Saffron
has been used as a spice, a dye, a perfume, and medicine.
The English word is based on the Arabic word for "yellow."
In the 15th century in Germany, people were burned and
buried alive as punishment for adulterating saffron. It's
the traditional flavoring in the French bouillabaisse and
the Spanish Paella.
How deep is the deepest part of the ocean?
Pretty darn deep - so deep that if you took Mount Everest
and dropped it in the water, you wouldn't see it anymore.
The deepest part of the ocean is the Marianas Trench
(located in the Pacific Ocean, just east of the
Philippines), which is about 11,000 meters (almost seven
miles!) below sea level.

Study: Ad Clutter Mounts On Cell Phones,
But Reception Is Better
by Wendy Davis,
WHEN IT COMES TO ADVERTISING, familiarity apparently breeds
acceptance. A new study by Ball State University found that
more college students are receiving cell phone ads now than
at the beginning of the year. And, as the frequency of ads
has increased, the students' irritation with the intrusion
has ebbed. For the report, Ball State University advertising
instructor Michael Hanley surveyed 669 college students last
month. Nearly one in three of the respondents reported
receiving ads on their mobile phones, up from one in four in
February.
The recent study also found that about one-third of those
who received mobile ads found them annoying, but that
proportion was down from February, when 92 percent of
recipients found the ads aggravating.
Most students--51 percent--said they don't want ads on their
cell phones, but others indicated that they could be
persuaded to accept marketing messages. Twenty-nine percent
said they would consider agreeing to ads in exchange for
something free--like ringtones, extra minutes, upgrades, or
access to the Web.
In a sign that coupons or other discounts might be a good
use of mobile marketing efforts, two-thirds of respondents
said that cash might make them more favorably disposed
toward the ads. Twenty-eight percent of that group said 25
cents would suffice, while 60 percent said they would
require at least $1 per ad.
Twenty percent of respondents said they had received a
mobile ad from a person or company they didn't know, which
seems to indicate that some companies are violating a
Federal Communications Commission rule that bans marketers
from sending ads to mobile devices without owners' opt-in
consent.
The study also found that about 96 percent of students own a
cell phone, and almost 70 percent have Internet access on
their mobile phones.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson
Meniere's Syndrome
"Meniere's" is a condition affecting the
nerves of one or both inner ears.
PART 2 of 5
Why do some people get this? This is seen as a degenerative
condition. This is not part of the normal aging process
(otherwise we would all be getting this). That means something
has worn down or been damaged. Most people get some or all of
these symptoms in different degrees or intervals at some point
in their lives and think nothing of it. With Meniere's
sufferers, these "normal" activities seem to be hindered,
impaired, or completely incorrect. So messages are either not
going to be received correctly or will it be misinterpreted and
returned with a false command, because the nerves that should be
receiving the "information" are not healthy (for whatever
reason). Your may not think very much about these symptoms until
you have someone close to you do something very strange. But I
would like to be just a bit clearer, so if you ever have an
occasion to see this in real life, your reactions will be
sympathetic, helpful, and resourceful. For instance, being able
to hear someone speak (acoustic) to you one minute and not being
able to hear them at all the next second, is rather unnerving
and distressing. But standing upright one minute and finding
yourself on the floor, cut over an eye, is entirely another
shocker! This is not a conscious or chosen activity. The person
simply has no control over the episode. Something at that point
has disturbed the inner ear's balance nerve, in a very direct
and severe way.
Causes? There are many theories, and none are definite. Some of
the medical community feels this is the body working against
itself (auto-immune), others feel it's a virus, and many just
feel it's there because something has damaged the inner ear
nerves or tissue. It's virtually impossible to take a direct
look at the inner ear's working.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

Maz and Eloise, with the kids, just finished the morning
meal and were thinking on the start of the day. The kids
were not going down to their game on the beach today, for
some reason. They had broken pattern.
"So what's up with you two today? We don't often have
the pleasure of your company this time of day!"
"Not much, Mom. We just thought we would stick around
home today. It came to our attention that we take you and
Dad for granted so much maybe we should spend more time with
you."
"AliAnn, you surprise me. That's wonderful for you to
think that way but your Dad and I didn't mind you being
away, that's a kid's job. Parents job is to know that, let
it happen and guide you rather than push you. What is this?
Some higher law beginning to set in?"
"I think so Mom. Some things have become clearer to us
now, right Sammy?"
"That's right Mom, Dad. I don't know what it is but it
seems we want to become more of the adult world. New and
different things are of interest to us now."
"Well, I'm glad, son. What would you like to do or where
would you like to go?"
"Dad, we hear things, but you and Mom don't talk much
about the past. Take that story of Romano, for example, or
the story of Miguele. We had to find that out for ourselves.
You didn't tell us. I don't mind that, and maybe, before
now, we would not have listened. But now we are interested
and want to see and do things with you and Mom."
"I'm glad, son, but you didn't tell me if there was
something in particular you wanted to know or do now."
"I was working up to that Dad, Mom. We know, Mom, you
were raised in the United States and that when you were a
teen you were asked to take a trip. We know it was
dangerous, at least from the point of view you had no
experience in the environment you were about to be placed.
Both AliAnn and I think that was a very brave thing to do.
Would you and Dad take us to where you went and 'walk us
through it' so to speak?"
"You mean you want to visit where I first went when I
came to this country?"
"Yes, Mom."
Eloise looked at Maz with a gleam in her eye. They were
both pleased the kids wanted to know. They were catching up
a little on family history.
"I'll tell you what! Why don't we go to Pinehill and
start at the very beginning?"
"Gee, Mom, that would be neat."
Eloise winked at Maz. This was going to be a fun day.
The whole family was going to "re-live" Eloise's journey.
"Let's get this place cleaned up and then we'll be on
our way."
That took all of three seconds. Living by higher law
allowed you to cheat on the chores. All was cleaned up and
put away as fast as you could blink your eye.
"My, you kids do want to go don't you? Well, okay, let's
go. Follow your Dad and me."
Eloise saw herself in the restaurant of the motel in
Pinehill. She was standing in line waiting to be seated. Maz
and the kids were there with her. She asked the waitress if
she could have a certain booth. She got it.
The family all sat down and ordered beverages. Sammy
wanted a milkshake.
"Where did you learn about those?"
"I was here one day with Grandpa, Mom. He bought me one.
They're good. Try one Ali'. I know you'll like it."
"When were you here with Grandpa?"
"He and Mr. Striker were in here one day along with Mr.
Sparks. They were doing some talking about what they were
going to do about that idea of a statue of 'Old Pete'. They
didn't control the idea, they were just hashing around some
thoughts."
"Good for you. Go ahead and have your milkshake. You,
too, AliAnn. I agree with Sammy. They're good. When I was
your age I used to come here and have a milkshake everyday.
In fact I think I'll have one too."
When the family order was finally all in, it ended up
they all had milkshakes.
"Well, you guys, this is where my journey began. There
was a gentleman, a stranger, who had come into town and who
seemingly didn't do anything. He would sit in this booth
right here where we are sitting now, and have a coffee and
read a paper. We never saw him do anything, but I guess he
was watching all us kids. We used to come in after school
and sometimes a bunch of us would get together at night.
Mostly we sat in the middle at those two table there.
Anyway, one day this man came over to our table and asked if
I would kindly join him at this booth. My brothers were
protective of me then and they weren't going to let me go,
but I persuaded them it was all right. I was just your age
AliAnn, 18."
"What did he want, Mom?"
"Well, sweetheart, almost nothing at first. He asked me
my name and then he asked me who that boy was sitting over
there. It was David Wiley, you know, Mr. David, Pam's
husband? I told this Mr. Gladstone the boys name and he went
over to talk with him. Before I knew it David was sitting
beside me and we were listening to Mr. Gladstone talk.
He told us he had been watching us for some time now and
felt we were the people he wanted to work on a project he
had in mind. Then he told us what it was. He was going to
put a million dollars into each of our bank accounts. We
would have access to it only if we returned from a trip he
wanted us to take. We were to go somewhere in the world he
took us. We were to have only the clothes we could take in a
backpack. We were to have no money, no food and no weapons,
no identification, no credit cards, nothing. He was going to
take us someplace and our job was to find our way back,
alive. I thought the idea was neat, at first, but then when
I thought about it I got scared."

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Wash One's Hands: Why do we speak of "washing our hands" of
an affair we don't wish to be connected with?
Because that's what Pontius Pilate did when he yielded to
the people and condemned Jesus - although he found Him "not
guilty." But the custom is far older; baptism is a "washing
away of sins" and so are many more primitive customs.

HA! HA! HA!
THANKSGIVING POEM
When I was a young turkey, new to the coop, My big brother
Mike took me out on the stoop,
Then he sat me down, and he spoke real slow, And he told me
there was something that I had to know;
His look and his tone I will always remember, When he told
me of the horrors of..... Black November;
"Come about August, now listen to me, Each day you'll get
six meals instead of just three.
"And soon you'll be thick, where once you were thin, and
you'll grow a big rubbery thing under your chin;
"And then one morning, when you're warm in your bed, In'll
burst the farmer's wife, and hack off your head;
"Then she'll pluck out all your feathers so you're bald 'n
pink, And scoop out all your insides and leave ya lyin' in
the sink;
"And then comes the worst part" he said not bluffing,
"She'll spread your cheeks and pack your rear with
stuffing."
Well, the rest of his words were too grim to repeat, I sat
on the stoop like a winged piece of meat,
And decided on the spot that to avoid being cooked, I'd have
to lay low and remain overlooked;
I began a new diet of nuts and granola, High-roughage
salads, juice and diet cola;
And as they ate pastries, chocolates and crepes, I stayed in
my room doing Jane Fonda tapes;
I maintained my weight of two pounds and a half, And tried
not to notice when the bigger birds laughed;
But 'twas I who was laughing, under my breath, As they
chomped and they chewed, ever closer to death;
And sure enough when Black November rolled around, I was the
last turkey left in the entire compound;
So now I'm a pet in the farmer's wife's lap; I haven't a
worry, so I eat and I nap;
She held me today, while sewing and humming, And smiled at
me and said "Christmas is coming..."
