TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

What famous shipwreck, which led the initial survivors to
cannibalize others to survive, was immortalized in a
painting by Theodore Gericault ?
Why did King George III decree that lightning rods must have
blunt ends?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Has cannibalism ever been practiced in America?
Scientists have found evidence of cannibalism in the
American Southwest in the 12th century. The researchers drew
their controversial conclusion from an analysis of bones,
feces and cooking pots unearthed on the southern piedmont of
Sleeping Ute Mountain in what's now southwestern Colorado.
They say the tell-tale clues came from a village that
appears to have been mysteriously -- and suddenly --
abandoned in 1150. Evidence points to the ghost town as a
site of a cannibal feast - possibly occurring during the
social chaos caused by a long period of drought. The report
was published in 2000 in the British journal Nature.
Scientists and historians have long suspected cannibalism
was occasionally practiced in the prehistoric Southwest.
What strange disease was found to be linked to cannibalism?
In the 1950s, Australian authorities discovered that a
strange disease, called by the natives "kuru" (meaning
"shivering" or trembling"), was endemic to a particular
tribe in the eastern mountain regions of New Guinea.
Researchers attempted for years to find the cause of this
Parkinson's-like illness, which caused trembling, impaired
muscular coordination, and eventually death, but were unable
to do so. An American investigator, D. C. Gajdusek,
eventually won a Nobel Prize in medicine (in 1976) for
isolating a slow-acting virus that infected the victim's
brain and caused the disease. The virus was spread by the
tribe's use of cannibalism in its burial rituals.
Researchers discovered that organs, including the brain
(where the virus resided), were cooked and eaten as part of
a funeral meal.

ANNOUNCEMENT! ANNOUNCEMENT! ANNOUNCEMENT!
thePEBBLE will no longer be publishing on weekends.
For those of you who are steady readers I thank you for your
support and loyalty. I also ask you to understand there is
considerable commitment required to get thePEBBLE out
on a daily basis. New and different things are happening
in my life that make that close to impossible some days.
Giving me a break on weekends will go a very long way to
relieving that pressure because it will give me some "spare" time
in which to organize.
I thank you for your continued loyalty and support.
By the way, for those of you who have not purchased the book
The Saga of Pinehill, I ask you to do that today. The publisher and I
are coming to terms concerning the next book in the series and I
think we'll see The Saga of Pinehill II on the market next year.

Don't Get Mad - Get Even!
Two brawny men came to my house to install some new floor
covering in the kitchen. Once they had moved the stove and
refrigerator out of the way, it was not long before the job
was done.
As they were getting ready to leave, I asked them to put the
heavy appliances back in place.
The two men demanded $45 for this service, stating it was
not in their contract.
I really had no choice but to pay them. As soon as they
left, however, the doorbell rang. It was the two men. They
asked me to move my car, which was blocking their van.
I told them my fee: $45.
How many times do we get worked into a corner by some
conniving individual or business who performs like these two
men did?
I once stopped at a service station for gas. The owner
encouraged me to have a coffee. I told him I didn't want a
coffee. He said to go ahead, it was free.
He twisted my arm. I took the coffee, but had not yet had a
sip, by the time it came to pay for the seventy dollars
worth of gas I purchased. I went to the counter to pay for
the gas and the bill came to seventy one fifty. Upon
querying I was informed the one fifty was for coffee.
Without arguing I merely gave him his coffee back and gave
him seventy dollars only. That gentleman and you may rest
well assured I will never darken his doorway again. I didn't
get mad. I merely did what I knew was right. Thereafter I
made sure several of my friends knew the treatment they
would get at the hands of that business.
I don't imagine businesses like this last very long. They
are greedy and care not who they hurt, in their pursuit of
the dollar. Yet you don't have to get mad. There are many
ways one can react to such people or businesses.
The lady in the joke was not only a quick thinker, but her
calm reaction to the greed of the men is an example to
praise.
Sometimes one stumbles onto situations like these completely
by accident, not being aware they are coming. That's okay,
even if you do get caught. Remember the law "As ye sow, so
shall ye reap". Those who perform this way shall have their
reward, and while, temporarily, on the surface, it appears
it might be your money or something else of value, don't be
afraid to let it go. The reward for these people shall be
great, and often it is life itself.
People who behave the way of the greedy are commonly
uptight, with guilty consciences. Sooner or later their
mental and emotional lives take a toll on their health and
prosperity.
Your job is to maintain your own "cool". If you can get
even, without a display of temper, good. If you can't get
even, then refrain from showing the temper anyway, it will
hurt you, not them.

Drug Interactions Or Side Effects:
Not To Be Taken Lightly Or
Ignored Altogether
PART 1 of 3
This past weekend I spent hours doing research on drug
interactions for a lovely young lady of 73! She was on two
medications for one of her conditions and three for another.
Then she was also on something to help her prevent bone density
loss. Our concern for her was the possible side effects and
interactions. Initially she went to her doctor to get some help
with her dizziness. Eventually she wasn't much better. In fact
she thought she was worse off than before.
I started my usual search in Medline http://medlineplus.gov/
I added the drug name and quickly moved to the next stage.
I always go to the "Medical Encyclopedia" section. It's the easiest
to understand. My first mistake was to do the search for the one
drug I wasn't familiar with. I thought I knew the others fairly well
and felt I could think the "connections" through without doing
much more searching. However what I found with the first search
really concerned me. Consequently, I did very careful searches
for all the others. Here's why I know it was a "mistake".
If I had checked the other drugs first, I would have concluded
this one would be fine. But having done the unknown one first,
and finding it to be labeled something along the lines of being
the corrective measure for such drug overdoses, I now really
read every word very carefully. I would have been lulled into a
false sense of security and totally missed the cautionary note.
Not good. Good lesson for me to learn.
I found some disturbing results. I am not a pharmacist and I
don't choose to be one. But I am having some difficulty knowing
who to send people to for this kind of professional support
or interpretation. The problem may lie in the fact that clinics
are often the main health providers. You frequently don't get
the same doctor or nurse clinician.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

"Hank, what was that?"
"I don't know, honey. Don't you mean who was that?"
"Hank, I don't know. Strange things have been happening
tonight. I was on my way to phone Mom and Dad to have them
come over and look after the kids so I could get to the
accident. I was afraid if was you and I thought I might have
lost you. When I went to put my hand on the phone that same
voice told me you were all right and that I should watch the
television. The voice was clear, distinct and authoritative.
I was almost compelled to do as I was told.
Then you tell me about the fall down the chasm, the
voice you heard, the brilliant white light, all those
things. What's happening to us Hank. I don't understand
it."
"I know, honey. I don't either. All I know is that
things will be okay. Apparently we are going to go get the
car tomorrow. Don't ask me how. Its fallen so deep into the
canyon I don't think it will be any good any more, it's
smashed all to pieces. I don't even know how I was able to
live, or get out of it. But this voice kept calling and like
you said it was compelling. I almost had to do as I was
told. I sure wish I knew what was happening."
"I do too. It's like we are in a dream where things are
happening over which we have no control."
"You know what? I think we best just go with the flow,
so to speak. No harm has come to us, indeed, I am of the
opinion this person brought me back from the dead. I really
think I died out there Kathy. It was wonderful. If death is
like that I look forward to it.
And look at you. It told you true, consoled you and gave
you something you could hang onto until you finally saw me
on TV.
I feel calm, warm and at peace, and this is Christmas,
let's just love each other and see what happens over the
next little while."
"I guess I can live with that."
Even though exhausted from the events of the evening
Hank and Kathy found themselves somehow energized. They went
to bed and tried to sleep, but only tossed and turned for an
hour.
Hank got up first and was in the kitchen fixing himself
another hot chocolate when Kathy got up and decided to go to
the kitchen to fix herself a drink too.
"I can't sleep."
"I can't either. I don't know what's going on. We should
both be tired. I was laying there thinking. I'm pretty
thankful things have worked out the way they have. I could
have been dead, or bad hurt and in the hospital over
Christmas. It is good things have worked out."
"Honey, do you think it's right for us to rely so
heavily on 'the voice'. Huh! I don't even know if it is a
person, a thing, or what."
"Don't worry about that, Kathy, as I see it we don't
have much choice. I certainly don't want to go back and I'm
scared to really think of what the results would be if that
'force' was not with us."
"I guess you're right, Hank, but I'm confused. I guess
things will work out. The voice said we were to be home the
night after tomorrow, and alone, that he/she would visit at
10. I guess we'll have to wait until then."
"Maybe not, honey. When I was down in the canyon, before
I was lifted up into the bush at the side of the road, the
voice told me we would look after the car tomorrow. Let's
just wait and see."
The pair of them chatted for about an hour until somehow
it seemed right to go to bed. This time they slept like
children.
It was the kids who got them up the next morning. Mom
and Dad slept in. They could hear the kids getting their own
breakfast in the kitchen. It was around 10:30 am. Hank and
Kathy got up and joined the kids. During breakfast they told
the kids what had happened. They had been asleep during the
whole affair.
"Gee, Dad, that sounds neat. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine now but there was a time when I didn't think I
would make it."
The doorbell rang.
Kathy went to answer it. It was a newspaper man. He
wanted to talk with Hank.
"Hank. It's a newsman. He wants to talk with you."
Hank came into the hallway and to the front door.
"Mr. Brown, I'm a reporter. I was out to the scene of
your accident this morning. I wanted to look around in the
daylight. I have some questions for you. Do you mind if I
come in and interview you?"
"N - no. I guess that would be all right."
Hank led the newsman into the front room where they sat
and talked. Hank was still in his pajamas and housecoat.
"To tell you the truth, Mr. Brown, I was going to leave
you alone today. That must have been quite a shock to you,
going through all that. But when I got to the scene I found
some surprises."
"What do you mean surprises?"
"Well, there are lots of tracks showing how you got hit,
how your car went over the edge and down into the canyon.
There are lots of tracks where the rescue workers tried to
get down to reach you, and tracks showing they came back up.
Then I went over to where you came up, remember, when you
called the police? I walked back into the bush from which
you came and I couldn't find tracks at all.
How did you get out of that canyon, Mr. Brown?"

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Canopy: Why is a bed curtain called a "canopy"?
The word comes to us from the Greek and literally means a
"gnat curtain". The fishermen of the Nile used to sleep
under a rude sort of tent made out of their fish nets,
believing - perhaps without to much foundation- that a gnat
would not pass through the holes in the net.

Some time ago my husband, Joe, was invited to lecture at the
University of Cairo.
Because of an impending airline strike, reservations were
exceedingly difficult to obtain. Every day our travel agent
would phone to assure us that everything possible was being
done. Finally, two days before we were supposed to leave, we
received the okay. Laughingly, our travel agent read the
confirmation word for word.
We have often wondered since who the delightful airline
employee was who had wired:
"Flight into Egypt for Joseph and Mary confirmed."
