thePEBBLE - 12/29/05 - Try To Target!

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

A typical, obviously American, community. Two young people
given an opportunity for an a adventure with an attainable
financial reward. Their adventure into the inkonwn, not
restrained by dogmatic rules or community restraints, leads
them to resources that change no only the two adventurers'
attitudes, but attitudes of others.

The reader will either come away with a a feeling of
wonderment or question the writer's declared source, his
Maker, for the content.

I was not envious of the characters' adventures but enjoyed
the book as it refreshed the wonderment I had as a youth and
now as a practical adult, to "think outside the box" about
powers that are within us.

Jerry Harlton

Jerry Harlton was an executive assistant to the Right
Honourable Joe Clark, the former Prime Minister of Canada

It took me back to my youth and now inspires me to "think
outside the box".

TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

Is the current British Queen, Elizabeth II, related to King
George III?

What place receives the longest period of daylight on June
21?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Was King George III really insane?

Well, he definitely had a problem that caused him to behave
bizarrely. King George III (1738-1820) became violently mad
in 1788 and had to be placed in a straitjacket. (He actually
ripped off his wig and ran around naked and feverish at one
point). Things got so bad that by 1811, his son, the future
King George IV, served as regent. Some historians actually
blame the American Revolution on the king's illness,
apparently feeling that maybe the colonists wouldn't have
revolted if King George III had been more reasonable.
Scholars today think King George III might have had
porphyria, a disease that affects the nervous system.

Isn't porphyria the "vampire's disease"?

Biochemist David Dolphin indeed suggested in 1985 that
vampire legends might be based on actual people suffering
from porphyria. He noted that people with porphyria are
extremely sensitive to sunlight (to the point of being
disfigured by it), sensitive to garlic, and may appear to
have fangs thanks to taut skin around the mouth. He also
suggested that porphyria victims in the past may have sought
to treat themselves by drinking blood. Dolphin based this
speculation on the fact that blood products are used to
treat the disease today. However, it is unlikely that
persons accused of being vampires were sufferers of
porphyria. Those with the disease do not crave blood and
can't treat themselves by drinking it (they need
injections), and no one has ever proved that garlic is a
problem for sufferers. Porphyria is extremely rare and
actually comprises several disorders, only a few of which
actually cause disfigurement.

ANNOUNCEMENT! ANNOUNCEMENT! ANNOUNCEMENT!

thePEBBLE will no longer be publishing on weekends.

For those of you who are steady readers I thank you for your
support and loyalty. I also ask you to understand there is
considerable commitment required to get thePEBBLE out
on a daily basis. New and different things are happening
in my life that make that close to impossible some days.
Giving me a break on weekends will go a very long way to
relieving that pressure because it will give me some "spare" time
in which to organize.

I thank you for your continued loyalty and support.

By the way, for those of you who have not purchased the book
The Saga of Pinehill, I ask you to do that today. The publisher and I
are coming to terms concerning the next book in the series and I
think we'll see The Saga of Pinehill II on the market next year.

Try To Target!

A group of golfers were telling tall stories. At last came a
veteran's turn. "Well, he said, "I once drove a ball,
accidentally off course, through a cottage window. The ball
knocked over an oil lamp and the place caught on fire."

"What did you do?", asked his friends.

"Oh, " said the veteran, "I immediately teed another ball,
took careful aim, and hit the fire alarm on Main Street.
That brought out the fire engine before any major damage was
done."

Sounds like a tall tale doesn't it? Yet it points out the
need for us to target our ads to a market that is
interested. The whole idea is to generate profits.

The internet is a vast place. The likelihood of any one of
us reaching everyone is mathematically impractical. However,
blasting an ad to any and everyone you can seems to be the
philosophy. The theory is that the more people see it the
more people will buy.

While that may be true, in theory, it is rarely the result.
The reason is that when everyone practices that philosophy
then too much email gets into a persons email box and the
result usually is it gets deleted.

So there is wisdom in attempting to gather the attention of
those who have displayed an interest in your product or
service, usually by purchasing something similar along the
way.

Fact: Only those who are interested in your product will
look at it.

Fact: Only as you show them the benefits they will have,
will they consider purchasing.

Fact: Only when you show them the benefits in a way that
allows them to think they cannot live without your product
or service, will they purchase.

What we are speaking of then is the value, to you, of going
for that market that would be interested in your product or
service. For example, those over forty are likely to be more
interested in food supplements than the teen market. Those
in their twenties are more interested in the value of
exercise than those in their forties.

So find your market and begin to write ads that target the
market you are addressing.

Every once in a while you will make a mistake and put the
golf ball ( ad) right through the window. But also once in a
while you will be right on target and hit the fire alarm.

Try To Target!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Drug Interactions Or Side Effects:
Not To Be Taken Lightly Or
Ignored Altogether
PART 3 of 3

I wrote an article a while back about the "rebound" effect of certain
medications. It simply means that in some drug products, if you
take more than the prescribed daily dose, the drug works against
you! All these drugs, taken independently, look pretty innocent.
You can probably tolerate the side effects without too much
trouble. But taken in groups, they pose a potentially-serious
problem.

I honestly don't know who to send you or my friend to,
except the Medline link. You must do some very detailed research
for yourself. It is the same caution I give for surgical
consents. Read ALL the possible side effects and complications.
If you can live with them, go ahead. But if they are too
debilitating, you MUST ask for more information and a second
opinion.

By law, this information has to be included. Someone
has to have ended up with these negative results. For instance I
spoke with someone tonight who had a surgical procedure for
which the surgeon gave her a 90% success rate. So 10% of the
people who had this surgery had a failure. If this is you, can
you live with being one of that 10%?

It's the same with drugs. Someone has to have these side effects.
Or interactions. In my friends' case, all her drugs had similar
warnings, yet she was prescribed all of them. Then I realised
why the last drug, the newest one, was prescribed. Why she
wasn't taken off any, I don't know. I used to send people to their
pharmacist for a "profile", but I don't think they are doing those
any longer.

One of my students printed off 9 PAGES of fine print for her
medical condition. Needless to say, she didn't understand most
of it despite having a medical terminology background.

The other sad thing I notice, no one offers any non-drug
treatment suggestions. My friend has sinus congestion. It would
be very easy to show her how to clean them quickly and without
drugs. Here is a copy of this article if you want to try it.

mailto:sinusclear@rr-email.com

So in the end you are the one person who has your own interest
at heart and health. Please read everything you can about your
condition(s). Ask detailed questions. Write out all the drugs
you are on and side effects, including any you may be having.

Make it as easy as possible for your medical practitioner to
give you the best service possible. It may seem a bit
"redundant" if you have a great specialist, but hopefully they
won't mind. And really appreciate those doctors who know your
pharmaceutical history. But do start to take full responsibility
for your own health and that of your family. Drugs have a very
important role to play in our lives, but they should not be
fooled with or taken for granted.

What did I finally do with my friend? I sent a lot of information
of my "discoveries" to her family and suggested they study
this with her. Then, if they could, to please go with her to her
next doctor's visit. Hear what is being suggested. If another
drug is to be part of the discussion, ask for interactions and
possible side effects, and how this would fit into her present
medical profile.

Most people don't believe there is "power" in taking someone
to your appointments. There is. Use it.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Not believing what had happened to the car, Hank pulled
over and stopped. He got out, stood back and looked at the
car. He couldn't see any rust. The car was bright and shiny
as if it had just been polished.

He walked around it. The car was beautiful. There wasn't
a dent anywhere, even the tires looked new, with new tread
on them. He raised the hood. The engine compartment was
clean and looked for all the world as if it were new.

Hank couldn't believe what was happening. He had always
loved this vehicle, and looked after it, but now, this was a
beauty.

"You will never have to put fuel in it again, or change
or check fluids. You will never be in an accident and the
car will never get wet, snowy or dirty, or need repairs."

The voice again. Hank couldn't understand what was
happening. How could a car never get dirty, or never need
fuel? Hank didn't understand.

He got back into the car and just sat there, being
thankful for all that had happened. Somehow he felt loved,
protected. He was grateful and kept repeating "Thank you"
over and over, although he had no idea to whom he was
speaking.

Slowly Hank came out of his reverie enough to resume his
journey. He drove home carefully, remembering the experience
from the night before. The roads were now fairly clean. It
had stopped snowing during the night and the weather was now
warm enough the snow on the roads was melting.

Cars passed him and were throwing spray, yet none got on
his windshield. As he get closer to his place the traffic
increased, still his car stayed clean. Finally he drove into
his driveway and pushed the button for the garage door
opener. He drove in and closed the door.

Hank opened the door into the house and called Kathy. He
wanted her to come have a look at the car.

Kathy came to the door and gasped, holding her hand over
her mouth. There, in front of her was the family car good as
new. It was bright and shiny and showed no sign of an
accident, much less an accident that had if fall all the way
down into that canyon.

"Hank, this is incredible. I thought you said it would
be smashed beyond recognition, but look. What happened?"

"Honey, I was transported somehow to that bridge at the
bottom of the canyon, you know, on the Old Mill Road? I
stood on the bridge and the voice was with me. The car was
about a 100 feet from the bridge down in the stream bed.

The voice spoke and right before my eyes the car began
to take on it's old shape. Then, suddenly it was on the road
in front of me. I was told to get into it and drive home. I
found all this hard to believe but I got in and it was like
the car was new. It steers better, rides better and looks
better than it ever did. I was so amazed I pulled over to
the side of the road, got out and had a look all around.
Look, no rust, anywhere.

Then the voice spoke again. It told me I would never
again have to buy gas or change or check fluids, that the
car would never get wet, snowy or dirty and never get into
an accident or need repairs. This is a miracle, honey.
That's the only way I can look at this. I don't know what is
happening. Look, no water dripping from under the car, yet I
just drove through all that snow and wet."

"Oh! Honey, this is wonderful. It looks beautiful."

The kids came in and had a look. "Wow! Dad, what did you
do? It's snazzy!"

The rest of the day Hank and Kathy just stayed home and
took it easy. It was a Sunday and neither had to work. They
drank coffee and talked about all that had happened.

"As I was driving home cars were passing me and spraying
all over, yet look at the car. There isn't a speck of dirt
on it anywhere. This is crazy, Kathy."

"I know, but somehow, honey I can't help but feel things
are going to be okay."

"Me, too."

The day slowly passed. Both Hank and Kathy were becoming
somewhat anxious. They knew not what to expect as the day
was proceeding. They were fearful and curious all at the
same time. They put the kids to bed around nine and the
house was quiet and peaceful. They turned on the television
set until about 9:45 pm. Then they turned it off and waited.

The air was so thick you could cut it. The apprehension
was so great they were nearly ready to bolt and run.

Then, suddenly, there was a light in the center of the
living room. From it emerged a man and a woman. They were
dressed similar to Hank and Kathy and they were about the
same age.

"Hank, Kathy, hello. Finally you are able to see me. Up
to now I have kept myself invisible. I knew the news people
would be after you and had I been visible to you before now
you would have attempted to explain. This way you just
didn't know what was happening and that would show in your
speech and attitude. The news reporter believed you and
decided it might have been a result of all you had been
through.

My name is Tim and this is Sharon. We saw the trouble
you were in and were asked to come help you out. It is our
good pleasure to do that. You are doing a wonderful job with
your kids and we want to see you continue. Additionally, you
have worked hard under impossible circumstances and you have
done well.

It is time for you to be made aware of some new things.
They may make life easier for you. That is why we have come
tonight, just to talk. May we sit?"

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Darby and Joan: What is the reason we refer to a loving old
couple as "Darby and Joan"?

The name comes down to us from a ballad by David Woodfall in
which Darby and Joan were pictured as growing old together
happily. Darby and Joan were real people: Woodfall actually
served his apprenticeship with John Darby.

HA! HA! HA!

A Catholic priest I once knew went to the hospital to visit
patients. Stopping at the nurse's station, he carefully
looked over the patient roster and jotted down the room
number of everyone who had "Cath" written boldly next to his
name.

That, he told me, was a big mistake. When I asked why, he
replied, "It was only after I had made the rounds that I
learned they were all patients with catheters."
