Where on Earth is the best place to find meteorites?

When was the New Year's Eve ball first dropped in Times

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

How did life arise on Earth?

Okay, I can't REALLY answer that one. But I can report on
research, published in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Science, that provides an astounding suggestion
about the origin of life. In a nutshell: scientists showed
that when simple, common chemicals (water, wood alcohol,
carbon monoxide, ammonia) are exposed to the harsh
conditions of deep space, the molecules spontaneously
arrange themselves into hollow structures that resemble the
cell membranes found in all living things. Scientists chose
these chemicals because they are the same ingredients known
to make up the ice particles in the dense clouds between
stars.

Does this mean the scientists created life from the
chemicals?

No. The structures themselves are not living, as they lack
the genetic information needed to evolve. But the research
does show that early chemical steps considered important for
the origin of life can form in space. It also supports a
theory that life on Earth might have begun when organic
compounds, born in interstellar clouds, traveled to earth
aboard meteorites and comets. Basically, the research
suggests that the molecules needed to make a cell's
membrane, and thus for the origin of life, are all over
space and could be "seeding" newly formed planets
everywhere.

How did scientists recreate the harsh conditions of deep
space?

They first created an environment similar to that found in
"empty" space by taking temperatures down to almost absolute
zero (minus 441 degrees Fahrenheit) in an extreme vacuum.
They then froze the mixture of common chemicals and zapped
them with high-energy ultraviolet radiation, similar to what
a nearby star in space would emit.

Look'em In The Eye!

A customer wanted to ask his attractive waitress for a date,
but couldn't get her attention. When he was able to catch
her eye, she quickly looked away. Finally he followed her
into the kitchen and blurted out his invitation. To his
amazement, she readily consented.

He said, "Why have you been avoiding me all this time?
You wouldn't even make eye contact."

"Oh," said the waitress, "I thought you wanted more coffee."

Wow! How's that for an employee? She won't look you
in the eye because she thought you might want another
cup of coffee? I wonder if her boss has noticed that
behavior.

Yet the joke brings up another point. It speaks of the very
first sign of confidence and sincerity. Think about it. If
someone is speaking to you and fails to look you in the
eye, how comfortable are you about what they are saying?

The truth is that when eyes meet souls communicate.
Those who don't look you in the eye often have much
to hide.

Do not think I am saying that if one looks you in the eye
they can be trusted. That is not what this is about. In fact
con artists are well schooled at holding a steady eye.
You will have to determine their honesty.

What I am speaking of though, is the confidence level of
the one you are speaking with. Indeed I might be speaking
of your own confidence level.

From this day forward make a point of looking people
in the eye when you speak with them and you will find
your listener more attentive and more likely to believe
you. Eye contact is critical to conveying your message
and to getting the message from those who speak
with you.

In fact it is so critical that a lot of Arab businessmen
will wear sunglasses when negotiating a business deal.
They well know the eyes can give away their intent to
a practiced observer. Hiding their eyes allows them
more freedom, and usually better results.

Your eyes react to your emotions. The eyes react quickly
to your thoughts and convey messages you don't even
know you are giving out. Why do you think two lovers
spend so much time looking into each other's eyes?

Maintaining eye contact is a practiced skill. Practice,
practice, practice. The more you maintain eye contact
the more confident you appear to your customer's,
clients, friends and family. It helps establish authority.

Look'em In The Eye!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - by Karin Henderson

Body Parts: Hands and Feet
PART 7 of 7

(Lubrication)
I mentioned earlier that all these joints or hinges of so many
bones must be flexible. A joint naturally secretes a fluid to
lubricate it. But it must be mobile to do that. If not, the
joint will get dry and any movement is difficult and painful.
Such is the case with osteoarthritis. This is degeneration.

Another group of degenerative conditions are "collagen"
diseases. Collagen is a protein found in the connective tissues
of joints.tendons, ligaments, and other strong fibre-like
tissues. The collagen becomes involved in an Inflammatory
Process. And because the problems happen in different parts of
the body, different areas will become stiff and painful to move.
Scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, and myositis are just a few
of these conditions. (I want to remind you that the American
Medical Association wrote a report about the use of nutritional
supplementation and degenerative conditions. It is not necessary
any longer to accept this condition blindly.)

A contracture is an abnormal position caused by the limb not
being used regularly. It "freezes" the position and it's very
painful to move later on. In bedridden people, (young and old)
it's imperative for their limbs to be exercised even "passively"
by someone else. Elbows and knees are common places for
contractures, but fingers and toes suffer too. And the whole
body needs to be moved regularly. That is why you can see some
people on what we call alternating pressure mattresses.or "egg
crates". It's all to do with shifting the weight around the
body. It helps the circulatory system by allowing the fluid to
be redirected. Those red spots on hopes and knees and elbows are
all to do with poor circulation: this lack of movement. You want
and need smoothly moving joints.

Conclusion
This has been a very brief overview of hands and feet. Because
they are so crucial to our well being, and quality of life, you
are encouraged to use good hygiene and practical, preventative
safety measures. Frequent hand washing and drying hands
completely, gets rid of bacteria or other germs. It also
prevents chapping and subsequent infections. Do not use
antibacterial soaps unless you absolutely have to. They could
well be a factor in less than effective antibiotic coverage at
some future time. You don't need it. (Soap and water are fine.)
Use hand lotion to prevent redness and open sores, which could
well lead to infections.both internal and external ones. If you
are working, wear gloves to protect your hands. Your ego might
not need them: your hands do. Wear safety shoes and good shoes
for footwork. Use common sense. Use your toes and fingers for
way they are meant to do. Feet are not meant to kick heavy boxes
through a warehouse. Fingers are meant to enjoy eating and
caring for things. With loving care both sets of extremities
will serve you for years and years. Can you imagine your body
without hands and feet? What would your life be like? It would
be difficult to feed and clothe yourself.to "run" errands.to
wash...to do an huge number of things. If you had the choice, I
know you will choose to be "complete" with hands and feet. Look
after them. Treat them and your entire body with the respect all
parts deserve.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Use water efficiently

Everyone can save water through simple actions. Municipal
water systems require a lot of energy to purify and
distribute water to households, and saving water, especially
hot water, can lower greenhouse gas emissions. Do not let
the water run while shaving or brushing teeth. Do not use
your toilet as a waste basket for toiletry items - water is
wasted with each flush. And did you know a leaky toilet
can waste 200 gallons of water per day? Repair all toilet
and faucet leaks right away. See EPA's WaterSense site3
for more water saving tips.

Besides the above tip for conserving water we have a couple
things of interest.

AUBURNDALE, Florida (AP) -- Rosalie Bradford, who held
records for being the world's heaviest woman and for losing
the most weight, has died. She was 63.

Bradford weighed 1,050 pounds in January 1987, according to
the 1994 Guinness Book of Records. She lost 736 pounds to
weigh 314 pounds in September 1992, according to the record
book.

L.A. Archdiocese to Pay $60 Million to Settle 45 Sex Abuse
Cases

By John Pomfret
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, December 2, 2006; Page A02

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1 -- Almost five years after a sex scandal
erupted within the Roman Catholic Church, the nation's
largest archdiocese announced Friday that it will pay $60
million to settle 45 lawsuits alleging sex abuse by priests.

The deal, which involves incidents alleged to have occurred
before 1955 and after 1986, constitutes the largest
settlement made by the archdiocese and follows years of
legal battles waged under the leadership of Cardinal Roger
Mahony. The archdiocese still faces more than 500 lawsuits
by other individuals alleging sexual abuse.

How do you like that folks? Priests can molest kids at will,
knowing they will never be turned in and when you sue them
they use your money to pay out your lawsuit. Boy! The church
sure knows its way around the people of North America
doesn’t it?

Does this anger me? Yes it does. You know why? Because if
you or I were to be caught molesting children they would
throw us in jail and throw the key away. Why not the
priests? Or worse they would publish our names and wherever
we went we would be ostracized. Why not the priests?

Have a good one folks!

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Yankee: What is the origin of the term "Yankee"

The word comes from a nickname for the dutch, Jan Kaas,
meaning "John Cheese." Holland has long been famous for its
cheeses and so the nickname Jan Kaas or "John Cheese," is
appropriate to them. In pirate days, English sailors adopted
the term as a derisive name for the Dutch freebooters. In
this sense it became familiar in New York. Then the dutch
settlers there - noting its unpleasant significance - began
to apply it to the English settlers of Connecticut because
they believed the Connecticut English to be far more
enterprising than ethical. The term spread to the other
colonies - though at first it was almost always used to
refer with dislike to the citizens of a colony farther
North. It still is in certain sections - often with a "damn"
placed before it.

HA! HA! HA!

On a special teacher's day, a kindergarten teacher was
receiving gifts from her pupils. The florist's son handed
her a gift. She shooked it, held it over her head, and said,
"I bet I know what it is - flowers!"

"That's right!" said the boy, "but how did you know?"

"Just a wild guess," she said.

The next pupil was the candy store owner's daughter. The
teacher held her gift overhead, shooked it, and said, "I bet
I can guess what it is - a box of candy!"

"That's right! But how did you know?" asked the girl.

"Just a lucky guess," said the teacher.

The next gift was from the liquor store owner's son. The
teacher held the bag over her head and noticed that it was
leaking. She touched a drop of the leakage with her finger
and tasted it. "Is it wine?" she asked.

"No," the boy replied.

The teacher repeated the process, touching another drop of
the leakage to her tongue. "Is it champagne?" she asked.

"No," the boy replied.

The teacher then said, "I give up, what is it?"

The boy replied, "A puppy!"
