What fish goes "fishing" for other fish?
Several varieties of fish use their own versions of rods and
lures to attract OTHER fish to their jaws. The goosefish,
for example, which appears to be all head and no body, has a
long, moveable spine atop its snout. The spine is tipped
with a hanging tab of skin. When another fish moves close,
the goosefish will dangle its "bait" in front of its mouth
and twitch it back in forth so it resembles a worm or
crustacean. If the other fish goes for it, the goosefish
makes a meal of him. Anglerfish also have dorsal spines that
end in a lure shaped like a bulb. In some species, the spine
is so flexible it can be whipped around like a fly line.
Will a skunk spray another skunk?
You'd think that a fight between two skunks would be one
event you would NOT want to witness. Skunks can spray an
enemy from a distance of more than several dozen feet with
some very odoriferous chemicals. What happens when two of
them have "issues" to settle? Well, the good news is that
skunks will not generally spray their own kind. They reserve
their chemicals for large predators and use it only as a
last resort. The reason for this is that it's hard for them
to produce the stuff. But it's also true that skunks are
pretty tolerant of each other and rarely fight.

TIPS AND TIDBITS . . .
New York's food police ride to the rescue
By Steve Chapman
Sunday, December 10, 2006
New York City is a model of liberty, or perhaps anarchy,
when it comes to political opinion, religion, clothing, body
ornamentation, sexual proclivities and public etiquette. But
even Gotham has limits. The city government -- which
recently considered letting people officially designate
themselves a sex different from the one indicated by their
anatomy -- has decided it cannot stand by as citizens
exercise their own choices about eating trans fat.
Why not? Judging from the allegations, because it's the
worst food additive since E. coli. "It's basically a slow
form of poison," charged David Katz, director of the
Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center. City health
commissioner Thomas Frieden was not talking about
radioactive polonium when he declared, "New Yorkers are
consuming a hazardous, artificial substance without their
knowledge or consent."
So this month, New York decided to forbid restaurants from
using partially hydrogenated vegetable oils and shortening
in cooking. This measure makes it the first city in the
country to enact a ban -- edging out Chicago, which has been
considering one since last summer at the behest of Ald.
Edward Burke. He pronounced himself "disappointed" that his
city is not the first to vigorously police food options.
Trans fat has the regrettable effect of raising levels of
bad cholesterol in the blood and lowering levels of good
cholesterol. Awareness of those properties is what motivated
New York's City Council to legislate against them. But it
has also brought about changes that show why the prohibition
is unnecessary as well as unwise.
Most companies producing packaged foods began abandoning
trans fat in 2004, partly in response to public concern and
partly in response to pending federal rules requiring this
ingredient to be listed on nutritional labels. Trans fat is
most widely used in the fast-food industry, but even there,
the shift has already begun. Wendy's has chucked it
overboard, and KFC plans to end its use in frying next year.
Trans fat used to account for 3 to 4 percent of the calories
Americans ingest, but now, according to the American Council
on Science and Health, it's down to 1 or 2 percent.
What all this proves is that scientific evidence shapes
public understanding, and public understanding affects both
corporate and consumer decisions. As the evidence against
trans fat accumulates, companies that sell food have a
powerful incentive (namely, sales and profits) to cut back
on it, and customers have an equally powerful incentive
(their health and longevity) to eat foods without it.
So today, you have ample choices. If you don't want your
fries cooked in partially hydrogenated oil, you are free to
patronize Wendy's. If you prefer the taste conferred by
trans fat, and have no desire to attain your maximum
possible lifespan, McDonald's will accommodate you.
In neither case do you need the City Council of New York, or
any other government body, to ride up and yank the decision
out of your hands. This is not some nasty contaminant that
no one would conceivably want in their food. It's an
ingredient with advantages and disadvantages, which
different individuals will weigh differently.
If the problem is that people are consuming the stuff
"without their knowledge or consent," as Frieden claims,
then the reasonable step is to make restaurants provide the
needed information. Instead, he refuses to let people eat
trans fat even with all the knowledge and consent in the
world.
The health benefits of the switch are probably exaggerated.
As former Cato Institute policy analyst Radley Balko notes,
the rise in consumption of trans fat over the past 20 years
has coincided with a decline in the incidence of heart
disease. As for obesity, the change is irrelevant, since
trans fat has the same number of calories as any other type
of fat. Switching from partially hydrogenated vegetable oil
to canola or olive oil won't help you shed pounds.
Replacing trans fat with saturated fat, an option New York
did not think to prohibit, would be even worse. Most experts
agree that saturated fat is the biggest culprit in clogging
American arteries. The Department of Health and Human
Services has said, "Population-based studies of American
diets show that intake of saturated fat is more excessive
than intake of trans fat or cholesterol. Therefore it is
most important for Americans to decrease their intake of
saturated fat." (my emphasis)
But here's the good news: Even in New York, eating or not
eating saturated fat is still up to you. Enjoy that freedom
while you can.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - with Karin Henderson
Your Immune System: Delicate Yet Critical
How It Serves You And Why You Need To Keep It Healthy
Why a carrot is good and a chocolate bar is not...
PART 4 of 9
Let's see how they could be put to practical use in your body
and in your life through examples. As you have just read, the
Immune System is a series of protective mechanisms or systems
found naturally in your body. This protection is both internal
and external. It provides protection to the entire body, with
many "subsections". These protect you regionally (limb) and
locally (finger). Immune System keeps internal
(pathogens/disease-causing) and external (foreign bodies)
invaders from affecting your everyday life. (For ease of our
discussion, these invaders are called "free radicals".)
We will use the term Immune System "generally" to describe all
the protective systems of the body. This system is made up of a
variety of defense mechanisms including antibodies, which have
very specific functions. We also don't often think in terms of
the skin and digestive tract (mucous membranes, saliva, stomach
juices) spleen, etc.,) being connected to this, but they also
play very important roles. An example of the defense mechanism
with "local parts" is the inflammatory system or response. This
is one of the MOST important defenses you can have. Guard it
carefully. Here is a very simplistic explanation of the
"inflammatory process". You step on a nail. Immediately the body
recognizes this as an abnormal "invasion" and sends out the
inflammatory process to get rid of the invader(s). In this case,
it would be an increase of fluid, including large amounts of
white blood cells. This fluid will remain there until the
healing is complete or until some other process (antibiotics)
takes over. Then it stays to counteract the antibiotics
(drugs/chemicals). The volume of this fluid causes its own
problems as the pressure causes pain and distortion of the
area's anatomy. And when this process is also active in places
like the ear, brain, or eye, because of limited space, it will
cause additional problems. Its purpose is to wash the toxins out
of the area.
There is the body-wide response in the form of the lymphatic
system. As well, the immune system has many organs that will
either protect or not accept free radicals or intruders. Your
sinuses will protect you by filtering out certain chemicals.
Your stomach will "return" unwanted items. Your eyelids will
block out unwanted light. Your nose will make you aware of
undesirable smells and you can cover your nose or turn away.
Knowing we have such powerful protection available to us, it
scares me when someone calls and tells me that certain very
invasive procedures are to be done. On further questioning, it's
obvious that the symptoms are very uncomfortable or
debilitating. And that's fine, but WHY are those symptoms there?
What is your body trying to protect you FROM? From what you have
already read, wouldn't you now be asking a different question?

Greed And Avarice At Home And Abroad
If you read our cover story today you will see a reporter
arguing against the new ruling by New York City Council as
to the use of trans fats.
His arguement deals with freedom of choice and not the real
health issues. He claims that businesses won’t use trans
fats if they wish to maintain profits and the people won’t
use trans fats if they wish to preserve their health.
The reporter is wrong on both counts. He has no fundamental
understanding of human nature.
If his premise was correct none would smoke and none would
drink. None would use drugs, buy guns or do anything to harm
or maim others.
He fails to realize the role greed plays in the market.
Greed is the son of ego and you can bet there will be those
who eat trans fats solely because of ego and nothing else.
Clear thinking is not the characteristic trademark of the
individual man. Following the masses is. Men are afraid to
do their own thinking for fear they will be ostrecized from
a group. They would far rather do things to harm themselves
and others than be thought of as a clear headed thinker. The
very truth is that any clear headed thinker will
“self-ostrecize” and do things that will keep him healthy and
well.
On other fronts I see the Taliban are gaining ground in
Afghanistan. Too bad. They want to again ( maybe I should
say continue to ) kill and maim any who do not do as they
say. Even using their religion as a basis for this thinking
they change the rules everyday according to their whims and
fancies. They call it a rule of law, Islamic law, but the
rules keep changing so no one has any idea what is right or
wrong from one minute to the next. And they have no trials,
no fair representation before the courts. If you offend what
they think is the law you are shot.
Just another example of greed and avarice justified by ones
religion.
By the way, as global warming begins to create food
shortages and water shortages you watch how our North
American “Christian” religions work. You will find they are
not much different when really put to the test. It will be
every man for himself and all acts will be easily justified
by some religion.
Have a good day folks!

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Calamity Jane. what is the origin of the name "Calamity
Jane"?
The original Calamity Jane, Mrs. Martha Burke, was a famous
western character who said she got her name because she
carried two guns and any man who trifled with her invited
calamity.

HA! HA! HA!
One day, a diver was enjoying the aquatic world 20 feet
below sea level. He noticed a guy at the same depth he was,
with no scuba gear on whatsoever.
The diver went below another 10 feet, but the guy joined him
a minute later. The diver went below 15 more feet, and a
minute later, the same guy joined him.
This confused the diver, so he took out a waterproof pad and
pencil, and wrote, "Amazing! How are you able to stay this
deep down without equipment?"
The guy took the pencil and pad, erased what the diver had
written, and wrote, "I'm drowning, you moron!"
