ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

Are barracudas dangerous to humans?
Yes, but not because of their teeth. Barracudas are fierce
looking fish, but the real danger lies in eating them.
That's because they're the primary cause of ciguatera, a
foodborne disease produced by poisons called ciguatoxins
that accumulate in the barracuda's flesh as it eats smaller
fish. Eating a barracuda can cause you to suffer from
nausea, gastric distress, intense itching, diarrhea,
numbness and tingling, joint and muscle pain, and a reversal
of hot and cold sensations (hot things feel cold and cold
things feel hot). The illness is incurable and can last for
days, months, or even years. No amount of cooking or
cleaning the fish will remove the toxin.
Is it true that penguins topple over when aircraft fly
overhead?
It has been widely reported that penguins topple over like
dominoes when helicopters or other aircraft fly above them.
They fall over backward, the stories suggest, in order to
look at the flying machines. Turns out that's a lot of
hooey. A scientist who recently studied a penguin colony on
a remote sub-Antarctic island found that the birds do the
practical thing when aircraft fly over: they get quiet and
try to move away from the noise. "Not one king penguin fell
over when the helicopters came over Antarctic Bay," said
Richard Stone of the British Antarctic Survey. Rather, he
reports, they stopped calling to each other and adolescent
birds (who have no eggs or nests) tried to walk away from
the noise. Breeding adults stayed by their nests, Stone
says, and no eggs or chicks were lost. When the aircraft
flies out of range, Stone adds, the birds resume their
normal behavior.

STRANGE BITS AND PIECES!
Air is passed through the nose at a speed of 100 miles per
hour when a person sneezes.

Here's To Think On! ... with Ken Darby
------------------------------------
So You Think You're Clever?
Boss: Johnson, we giving you a promotion but you have to
move to Montreal.
Johnson: Montreal! "Nothing comes from there except hookers
and hockey players!"
Boss: Listen pal, my wife comes from there!
Johnson, without missing a beat replies, "No kidding! What
position does she play?"
Sounds funny, on the surface, doesn't it? Yet it misses the
point entirely.
I have met people like this whose flippant attitude,
resulting in flippant speech, tend to have them think they
worked their way out of that problem. These people think
they are quick witted and clever, and go home patting
themselves on the back and bragging about their cleverness
to their friends.
I will never forget years ago I was in the middle of
purchasing a luxury vehicle, a big luxury vehicle. I asked
what kind of mileage I could expect out of this car and I
received the answer instantly "If you have to ask that
question you shouldn't be buying this car."
The salesman thought he was clever. I didn't get my answer,
and he will never know how close I came to telling him where
to go. He was not clever, he was rude. Moreover he was
insulting.
I shut up and made the purchase, then never went back or
spoke to the man again.
Today, being older, I would have given him a piece of my
mind and left without buying the car. I could have bought it
elsewhere.
So what is the point? The point is keep your conversation
honest. Keep your communication on a caring basis. Flippant
and clever will lose you sales, friends and much of what
constitutes a good life.
"Why?" you ask. Because most people dealing with you are
open, honest and trusting. Lose that and they will not be
back. AND they will tell their friends.
Another story for you. I know a man, in a teaching position,
who had his car repaired, after an accident, at a local body
shop. They messed up and would not fix the mistake they
made. He had to take his car elsewhere to have the mistake
fixed. It cost him a hundred dollars. He was so furious and
angry at the first body shop he went out of his way to tell
everyone with whom he came in contact. Considering he spoke
to and directly influenced well over a thousand people a
year, and his anger lasted well into six or seven years, I
would suggest the cheapest and best advertising the body
shop could have done would be to fix it.
As it happened this angry man has likely kept much business
from the body shop. They were flippant too. "Oh! No one will
ever see that!" were the comments. "That's nothing more than
you'll get in any parking lot when you drive out of here. I
wouldn't worry about that." Well, because they did not have
the customers best interests at heart, they lost many.
Today, they aren't in business. I wonder why?
So, the next time you have an inner urge to offer a flippant
remark to someone with whom you are dealing, think twice.
You will always lose when - - -

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - by Karin Henderson
Your Immune System: Delicate Yet Critical
How It Serves You And Why You Need To Keep It Healthy
Why a carrot is good and a chocolate bar is not...
PART 5 of 9
(If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, here lie some
answers. Our bodies are meant to function until you die of old
age. And the Immune System is there to help you achieve that
goal. Does it not make sense then to learn how to care for and
feed it wisely? Arthritis, Lupus, Cancer, Cataracts, Macular
Degeneration, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes, Alzheimer's, etc. are not
aging conditions. They are degenerative conditions. And can be
handled very differently and very hopefully.
Here are a couple of examples from other parts of "life" to help
you "connect" this new knowledge to your "real" life
experiences. You have a new lawn. You are excited and proud, and
spend a lot of "quality time" nurturing it. You water it, feed
it, cut it, check it for bugs, and treat those. And if you find
moss, (heaven forbid!) you stamp it out with its own "killer".
Then you add more chemicals in the fall to prevent other
problems. This is your work of art. You treat your car the very
same and proud way.
Or relate your body to a new house. You polish it and dust it.
You vacuum it very frequently. You are a very proud homeowner.
It is said that for most of us, our homes will be our most
prized possession (well apart from guys and their cars, right?)
The point is that you wouldn't forget to clean your home or
fertilize your lawn or wash and polish your car. As the proud
homeowner of your body, you should be giving the same high
degree of attention to it. All the time...till you are "old":
not degenerating. Your parents did it for you till you could
take over. Then other things got in the way and you began to
take it for granted. Your body is tremendously forgiving...up to
a point.
An aging condition is natural and happens because the body
delivers less of a product i.e. less lubricant, in a slower
manner, or meets a change of needs and adjusts accordingly. For
instance in an aging knee, the fluid produced would be less in
amount, and you would be moving it less, so the entire fluid
process wouldn't let you move as fast. In an arthritic knee, the
inner surfaces deteriorate from overuse (any number of reasons):
not from aging, causing the fluid to dry up much faster. (It's
the movement of the knee joint that produces the natural
lubricating fluid, Glucosamine.) In relation to sugars, a
healthy body is normally ready only to manufacture as much
insulin as needed. For instance, in Diabetes, the process of
balancing the insulin production and sugar intake is impaired.
This is not aging: it's degeneration.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Insidious Worthless Information
I see some are trying to make mankind feel better by saying
that man is 25 per cent less responsible for global warming
than they first thought he was. Gee, that’s great. Global
warming is going to cause unbelieveable catastrophes all
over the world killing literally millions of people - it’s
good to know we aren’t quite as responsible for it as we
thought we were.
Will someone please tell me where these people get off.
Certainly man has contributed to the whole mess, but whether
he has or not is not the issue. The issue is what are we
going to do about it. Global warming is coming. It is
unstoppable. And it will proceed at an ever increasing rate
such that it will surprise even the scientists. The real
issue is how are we preparing for it?
I can tell you that those in the know will now be socking
away as much money as they can lay their hands on in the
false belief that money will keep them safe. They will be
laying in stocks of food thinking that will keep them safe.
They won’t be telling anyone about it but that is what they
will be doing. They will have the attitude already that says
who cares about the poor, or their neighbors, I’m going to
look after ME.
Banks, papers and government will continue to keep things
looking like it is business as usual but underneath the
surface they are all preparing in their ways. Many of the
things they know about they are not telling us about - of
that you may be certain.
On another front I see Bird Flu is again raising its ugly
head. There have been three recent cases in South Korea. I
imagine we will see it again reported all over the world.
There have been millions of birds slaughtered yet it has had
no effect on where this virus goes. The medical community is
treating it as if it is the “superbug”.
I see there will actually be talks on the North Korean issue
but nobody expects them to be long or productive. They’ll be
just another sham, a waste of time and money that will come
to no productive end.
Oh well. That is life in the fast lane for mankind.
Have a good one folks!

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Calendar. How did the calendar" get its name?
From the Latin word for an interest book kept by
money-lenders - the calendarium. Interest fell due on the
calends or first day of the month. Calends itself came from
calare - the Latin verb meaning "to call" - because the
Romans used to publicly "call out" the first day of the
month.

The assistant bends down and has a look at the shoes. "Try
