TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

What is a Welsh rabbit?

So why is melted cheese on toast called Welsh rabbit then?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What is a "scuttlebutt" in sailing terms?

A scuttlebutt is a cask on shipboard containing freshwater
for a day's use. ("Scuttle" meant to cut a hole in something
and a "butt" was a barrel, so the "scuttlebutt" was a water
barrel with a hole cut into it for dipping drinking cups.) A
scuttlebutt can also be a drinking fountain on a ship or
marine or naval installation. Since the scuttlebutt was
frequently the place where a ship's gossip was exchanged,
the word has come to mean rumor or gossip.

Are a rabbit and a hare the same thing?

Forget what you learned on Bugs Bunny. A rabbit and a hare
are actually two different animals. Rabbits are smaller than
hares; are born blind, naked (furless), and defenseless; and
are generally gregarious, burrowing creatures. Hares are
larger, have ears tipped with black, and are quite capable
of seeing and hopping around right after entering the world.
They are also more solitary than rabbits. To complicate
matters even more, not all rabbits and hares are named
correctly. The jackrabbit, for instance, is really a hare
and the Belgian hare is really a rabbit.

Giving Service!

An off-ramp of a freeway in Long Beach, California, has
been torn up for years. Recently, someone put up a
handmade sign reading,

"Scientists tell us that the sun will burn out in one and a
half billion years. It is sad that this contractor will have
to finish working in the dark."

Gee, I guess the contractor has a service problem. Other
things have affected this condition, I'm sure, and maybe
the contractor is not the one to blame. However, this little
quip points out something - service gets noticed.

Have you ever gone into a department store and had to
look around to find someone to help you, someone of
whom you could ask questions?

The next question is, how many times do you run into
that type of situation?

On the other hand I once worked in a service station
where the boss wanted us to wash the windows of every
vehicle on the lot, whenever one came in, plus, lift the
hood and check the oil of every vehicle at the pumps.

As a staff member, I can remember thinking, "Oh yeah!
Now he wants us to work like slaves. He has to pay us
more." Well, you know what? He did. That is to say he
had noticed that none of the other service stations in the
area gave service. So he saw "service" as a marketing
opportunity. Within two months our business was up
significantly and we all got a raise.

That is what I feel like when I find a store that offers
"Service". I want to go back. I want to deal there. I know
I can get straight answers concerning the reason I'm
there. I like getting service so I deal at the places that
give it to me.

I wonder how you are doing in that department? You
think service is something you should get only at a store?
How about offering it to friends when they visit? How
about giving service to everyone, all the time? Would
that make them feel special?

It all boils down to the law doesn't it? You know the law
I'm talking about, "As ye give, so shall it be given unto
you . . ." or is it this one, "As ye sew, so shall ye reap"?
Or maybe it's this one, "What goes around comes around",
or even this one, "The chickens you send out are the
chickens that come home to roost".

Platitudes come out of years of observation. You can
quickly dismiss them on the basis you have heard it all
before, but I ask you to think on this one because the
concept of service, everywhere in your life, will make
dramatic changes in the benefits you receive.

Giving Service!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - by Karin Henderson

Your Immune System: Delicate Yet Critical
How It Serves You And Why You Need To Keep It Healthy
Why a carrot is good and a chocolate bar is not...
PART 7 of 9

Your body also recognizes every drug you coming into it (no
matter by what method) and wants to get rid of it. Every drug,
no matter how innocent or helpful, is made up of chemicals. So
think of all you take in, and, yes, that includes the wines and
other "spirits", the tobacco, and even "recreation" drugs, as
well as the cleaning aids we have in our mops, bathrooms, and
laundry rooms.

These might be considered pretty obvious "triggers" for the
immune system to start working, but others could something as
unusual as the insulation in your house or nail polish. If you
don't have a healthy immune system (abundance of anti-oxidants),
you are at the mercy of any and every negative condition in your
environment: smoke, air pollution, water pollution, etc., even
stress. Your body is not only physical...it has the emotional
and spiritual part of it and these are vital to its healthy
balance. And stress is a huge factor, but don't get caught up in
blaming stress for all your woes. That's easy to do and often
it's not a correct assumption.

For a time, it was widely assumed that infectious diseases had
been brought under control, especially in our industrialized
world. We now know that this is not true. The appearance of
AIDS, the huge increase in Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
and the recent re-appearance of Tuberculosis (TB) are very real
and disturbing. As well, we also now have harmful microorganisms
that are resistant to at least two very powerful groups of
antibiotics. If you are exposed to these pathogens
(disease-causing microorganisms), your immune system might be
unable to protect you. This is the immune response
malfunctioning (overloaded) or not even existing any more.

We continue to use antibiotics to "cover" everything. We are now
discovering that this was just adding more problems. (This is
why you should not overdo the use of anti-bacterial soaps: most
people have no real need for them.) Every chemical going into
your body is seen as an enemy: a free radical.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Think On These Matters

Boy! Now we’re really in trouble. It seems that man’s
greenhouse gasses are not only causing a problem here on
earth but in space also. I guess our gasses are escaping
earth’s atmosphere and heading right into the area where our
satelites and space stations are positioned, causing changes
in behaviour. Oh well.

Here, yesterday they were trying to tell us we weren’t quite
as bad as we thought we were and today they’re telling us we
are.

Sounds like man doesn’t it? In my lifetime both butter and
eggs have been bad for you then good for you some five
different times. I’m sure we’ll hear more of that now man is
onto this trans fats thing.

I see Iran is trying to undermine Israel, still, only this
time using different weapons. They are holding a conference
in Iran to discredit the Holocaust. Jews all over the world
are upset. It’s worse when there are some Jews freely
participating.

In the meanwhile I just sit back and watch. I’m unable to do
anything about these things except bring them to your
attention.

Did you heed my suggestion yesterday about getting the two
books The Saga Of Pinehill Books I and II? You will be
thankful you did for they contain answers for you about your
future.

Have a good day folks!

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Easy as Duck Soup: What is the reason we say a task is "as
easy as duck soup"?

A pond of a puddle of water is, by humorous analogy, called
"duck soup". a puddle caused by rainfall will materialize
without human effort. thus "easy as duck soup" indicates a
project requiring no special effort.

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

"Success is the prize for those who stand true to their
ideas!" -- Josh S. Hinds

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

Joe had asked Bob to help him out with the deck
after work, so Bob just went straight over to
Joe's place.

When they got to the door, Joe went
straight to his wife, gave her a hug and told her
how beautiful she was and how much he had missed
her at work. When it was time for supper, he
complimented his wife on her cooking, kissed her
and told her how much he loved her.

Once they were working on the deck, Bob told Joe
that he was surprised that he fussed so much over
his wife. Joe said that he'd started this about 6
months ago, it had revived their marriage, and
things couldn't be better.

Bob thought he'd give it a go. When he got home,
he gave his wife a massive hug, kissed her and
told her that he loved her. His wife burst into
tears.

Bob was confused and asked why she was crying.
She said, "This is the worst day of my life.
First, little Billy fell off his bike and twisted
his ankle. Then, the washing machine broke and
flooded the basement. And now, you come home
drunk!"
