Is it true that NASA hires a guy to sniff items that are to

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Are Jordan almonds found only in Jordan?
They're not found in Jordan at all. Jordan almonds
originated in Spain. Their name comes from the French word
for garden, "jardin."
Are guinea pigs from Guinea?
Nope. Guinea pigs are not from Guinea and they're not really
pigs either. The furry, fat little rodents are native to
South America (Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and Peru) and
were originally domesticated by Peruvian Indians in
pre-Incan times. They weren't pets, then. They were food.

Here's To Think On! ... with Ken Darby
------------------------------------
Is It Any Wonder? Do You Speak English?
My family has a tradition of naming the cruise control on
our cars. We were used to hearing my father proclaim, "Take
it, Max," as he flipped on the cruise control during long
trips in our station wagon.
Recently, I was traveling with my parents in their new car
when we hit a wide-open expanse of highway. My dad leaned
back and said, "I think I'll let Tom drive for a while."
"Tom who?" I asked.
My mother translated for me: "Tom Cruise, of course."
Now do you see the reason for the title to this article? Is
it any wonder the language changes every twenty five to a
hundred miles? No wonder northerners think southerners talk
funny. No wonder they think Canadians have accents. No
wonder there are words in every region that are different
than in any other.
And then when you add the language of teens into the
admixture you really have a condition not even their parents
understand.
You know what I mean. "Awesome" can mean anything from great
or terrific to the exact opposite. Gruesome can mean great,
too. Then there is "cool" and "neat" and "far out".
So, when an English speaking foreigner comes over to North
America and wants to fit in, they have to learn the language
all over again. And if you start using the words that come
out of Australia we all have a problem.
Now put together a web site that tries to have all English
speaking peoples understand it. There is a challenge.
I'm sure they are speaking words in New York City I haven't
even heard. On top of that new words are being invented
every day. Then there is the new language sponsored by rapid
technological growth that is sweeping this country.
I am surprised we are able to communicate at all. They say
God confused the tongues at the building of the Tower of
Babel. I think he should pay another visit just to
straighten us out. We can cause enough confusion by
ourselves.
Then, on the other hand, maybe I'll put my wife to the task.
The other day she was painting parts of our new picnic
table, outside, before we assembled it. It began to rain.
She looked up and hollered "NO". It quit raining. I figure
if she talks to God and God listens she can get God to
square away our language issue. In any case you can imagine
I pay attention to my wife after that incident.
Is It Any Wonder?

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - by Karin Henderson
Cold Feet and a Warm But Tired Out Heart
Trying to live a quality lifestyle when things
are falling down around you.
PART 1 of 2
Who would ever think a pair of sox and a crew neck
sweater could make a difference in someone's life.
Add a power bar, a hug, a "to do" list, and a smile, and
I witnessed an amazing transformation!
Recently I held a wellness clinic, which offered free glucose
measurements to the public. We do these routinely and it's a
great way to find people who may be on the way to having
diabetes. It's also really good opportunity to do some basic
health teaching on any topic. We do lots of blood pressure
measurements, answer questions, and teach people many things,
including stress, exercise, hypertension, and nutrition. It's a
chance to make contact with the general public who really doesn'
t go to visit a doctor very often.
These clinics are held in department stores and their pharmacies.
We are all registered nurses with an interest in helping
people stay well and out of our very limited health resources.
No clinic ever has just one focus. People see my blood pressure
cuff and they want to compare readings or ask a health-related
question or just chat. If I am ever without someone to talk to,
I fold my blood pressure cuff and adjust my stethoscope and
I'm busy again. (I hide my BP equipment till I'm ready!)
This recent clinic was the same.busy with all sorts of questions,
but I had been placed a bit out of the regular path for prescription
filling and cashier's desk. And that was good because I "found"
people who wouldn't be going to a pharmacist, but were
"just shopping". I was well into doing the testing when a very
tired looking gentleman came along. He stopped like most
people do and watched. But out of the corner of my eye, I
could see him leaning against the somewhat fragile shelves.
There he would shiver every once in a while. He didn't appear
much different than any of the others, but somehow I sensed he
needed my attention more than they did. I always have the right
to choose who is next. It's like triaging.you assess the situation
and make a professional judgement. I chose to check him next.
He had just returned from his doctors' office and didn't need a blood
pressure check.and he wasn't diabetic. (His uncle had died of it
and he sure didn't want that added to his problems!) And he
didn't want a glucose measurement test. So what did I feel he
needed? My gut feeling was that he just needed someone to talk
to and just give him a few minutes of caring.
I learned his mother had died the past week. And one of his
best friends and also a cousin had passed away the same week.
His wife was in the hospital and wouldn't be coming back home
because he couldn't care for her adequately. His family was far
away, but, yes, he had friends.although he didn't want to bother
them.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Changing the Subject Doesn't Solve The Problem
Man is up to his usual tricks - still. I see the big guns
have called out the scientists that denied any link between
smoking and cancer to deny any effects of global warming.
Funny thing is these “scientists” are not scientists in the
field or have not done any active work in the field for a
very long time.
They are now out to deny man has anything to do with global
warming. Absurd as that might seem they are having a far
more sinister effect in what is happening. Mark my words,
these people are very well paid - and ignorant.
The greatest harm they are doing is changing the subject.
They are out there saying the scientists are wrong, that man
is not contributing to global warming.
I say “That is BS” Who cares if man is contributing or not?
The fact is global warming is in process and it will have a
dynamic and dramatic negative impact on the world as we know
it. Sure, maybe the world has seen temperatures this warm
before - so what? The world has not seen temperatures this
warm before while it was carrying the population it is now
carrying.
Global warming will have a HUGE IMPACT on our ability to
grow enough food to feed ourselves. What are our elected
officials doing to resolve that issue?
For years now we have not produced enough food to feed the
population. We have been literally eating up our “buffer”
supplies. Where once we had enough food reserves to feed the
world for 116 days that has now dwindled to less than 56
days. Our population is growing, our arable land is
dwindling, our food production is down and reducing. You do
the math.
It does not take a rocket scientist to see there is a
problem looming - a BIG ONE. It does not matter if man is
the cause or not. He should do all he can to reduce his
participation in the problem and do all he can to become a
part of the solution.
Don’t follow those who would have you stick your head in the
sand.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Halcyon Days: How did "halcyon days" come to mean a peaceful
and pleasurable period of time?
The original "halcyon days" were fifteen days in the Spring
- the seven days preceding the Vernal Equinox in March, the
day itself and the seven days following it. This is the
brooding time of the "halcyon" or kingfisher and since its
nest was supposed to float on the sea, the superstition
arose that calm weather always prevailed at this time of the
year.

big hard rock. That's what happens to cheese when you leave

My young brother asked me what happens after we die. I told
him we get buried under a bunch of dirt and worms eat our
bodies. I guess I should have told him the truth--that most
of us go to hell and burn eternally --but I didn't want to
upset him. --Age 10
I gaze at the brilliant full moon. The same one, I think to
myself, at which Socrates, Aristotle, and Plato gazed.
Suddenly, I imagine they appear beside me. I tell Socrates
about the national debate over one's right to die and wonder
at the constancy of the human condition. I tell Plato that I
live in the country that has come the closest to Utopia, and
I show him a copy of the Constitution. I tell Aristotle that
we have found many more than four basic elements and I show
him a periodic table. I get a box of kitchen matches and
strike one. They gasp with wonder. We spend the rest of the
night lighting farts. --Age 15
