TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

Has NASA ever scrubbed a mission over stench?
Is it true that astronauts wear diapers under their
spacesuits when they venture outside the shuttle?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Are guinea pigs the animals most experimented on in medical
laboratories?
You would think so, since "guinea pig" has become a term
synonymous with something or someone that is the object of
an experiment. However, mice and rats are the most popular
lab animals, followed by rabbits and chickens. Guinea pigs
come in fifth.
Is it true that NASA hires a guy to sniff items that are to
go into space?
Yes. Apparently, objects kept inside the heated confines of
a spacecraft exude incredible odors (think of a piece of
food left inside a car in summer and then multiply that by A
LOT). Worse, astronauts can't roll down the windows! So
there's an employee, odor expert George Aldrich, whose job
it is to sniff every item going into orbit to ensure it
won't really, really stink.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW™ ... with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler

You Teach People How to Treat You
So often we hear people ask the question, "Why does
he/she/they treat me/us so badly?". The honest answer, in
most cases, is "Because you let him, her or they!"
If that seems too simple an answer, think of it this way.
You make a date for lunch with someone new. They arrive
twenty minutes late, citing traffic, office hold ups, the
weather, their car or their kids. Of course, things do
happen to detain even the best intentioned person. You
accept the apology and have a lovely lunch. The next time
you have lunch with this person, they are thirty minutes
late. Aha, there may be a pattern developing. What do you
do?
Unless you do not mind this behavior, you then have the
opportunity to teach that person how to treat you. Good
communication skills come into play. You can say something
like, "One of the things I've found works for me is to be
honest with people. I really enjoy your company and would
like to continue meeting for lunch. I know things come up
at the last minute and sometimes traffic can be horrendous.
I'd like us to agree that either of us can leave if the
other is more than fifteen minutes late? Would that be all
right with you?" This clearly communicates what you need
and want without ascribing blame. It builds relationship
when you make clear agreements with people. Would it be all
right with you if an employee came to work consistenly
one-half hour late? No, there is an agreement about the
starting time, isn't there? The same is true of our own
time.
One of my favorite quotes comes from John Powell. In his
book, The Secret of Staying in Love, he wrote that "the
genius of good communication is to be totally kind and
totally honest at the same time." I repeat this quote often
to remind myself how to approach teaching people how to
treat me. If I do not tell the truth about what works for
me, I cannot expect another person to honor and respect it.
Learning to teach people how to treat us takes practice.
You may still have folks who have been in your life for a
long time who take advantage of you, treat you poorly, or
are angry, abusive or violent. A habit has been established
and they may like it a lot! Consider telling them the truth
about how their behavior affects you and what changes would
make the relationship feel more respectful and caring for
you. Be both honest and kind. Be prepared to have to
repeat this information consistently over time. It is
sometimes "inconvenient" for these folks to remember that
you have now stated your preferences. They may not want to
change. Holding these boundaries also requires attention on
your part. Once you have asked for the change, you must
insist on it or consider giving up the relationship. Both
of these tasks take positive self-esteem and
self-confidence.
Relationships worth having are mutually respectful and
responsive. Think about how you might like to apply these
thoughts in your daily life.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - by Karin Henderson
Cold Feet and a Warm But Tired Out Heart
Trying to live a quality lifestyle when things
are falling down around you.
PART 2 of 2
So my obvious questions were about what he had for breakfast
(it was after 11:00 AM) and how did he sleep last night.and
wasn't he cold with just that thin shirt and open sports jacket (it was
mid November). Even in the midst of crowds, you can have very
meaningful conversations!
He shared with me that he hadn't had breakfast yet and wasn't
sure what he would have. He couldn't bother to shop. It was too
confusing and he never got the right stuff! So I took him over to
the food section and introduced him to power bars.
And why didn't he sleep well at night? It turned out he was
always cold and his feet were icy and kept him awake. Did he
have a pair of woolly sox, I asked? He smiled and said he
had a drawer full from Christmas presents, which he never used.
So now we had him munching on a power bar, promising to wear
warm, woolly sox to bed.next was the shirt and jacket. It was
obvious he wasn't destitute. And even I found out he owned wool
shirts and had several crewneck sweaters!
Things were really looking up! I discovered he had a microwave
oven and could operate it, ditto with a kettle! So we discussed TV
dinners and seniors' meal prepared by certain community groups
and "Meals on Wheels". He was given a quick lesson in heating \
his favorite soups as drinks instead of the convenient colas he
drank when he was thirsty. And lastly, I planted the idea of him
being the driver for a group of women in his apartment block
who no longer wanted to drive in the evenings. In exchange, he
could offer to arrange for a group meal on a regular basis so
everyone could eat and socialize.
By now I had gathered quite a group of interested bystanders.
This gentleman didn't need money. He needed someone to help
him get past the next few weeks with ideas and understanding.
So the ideas flowed freely. Everyone joined in! He left with more
than just a rather long list of things to eat, to shop for, and to
wear to bed! He left with hugs, a much more hopeful heart, and
a huge smile. And we were left with warmth and a feeling of
having made a difference in the life of a fellow "earthly" traveller.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Cut The Time In Half - Then In Half Again!
It seems everywhere one turns there is some evidence of
global climate change. I always marveled at how you can have
glaciers atop mountains in equatorial regions.
The reason, of course, is that they are high enough they are
not affected by the heat at ground level some 12,000 or
15,000 feet below.
Well now those glaciers are melting and the ramifications of
that for people and animals in the immediate and surrounding
area are somewhat large.
For example, such glaciers form the source of water for the
Nile river. What will happen to food production in Egypt
when the Nile dries up?
What ensures we will have rain for the flooding season when
there is no moisture in the land mass that can evaporate so
it can rain?
Our food production will again decrease and famine shall
prevail. Countries with food will do all they can to help
but soon it will be evident we cannot spare that food. It
will be seen we do not have enough to feed our own citizens.
What kind of a social structure do you think that will
encourage? Can you see riots? Can you see lawlessness? Can
you see man reverting to tribal conditions?
Science thinks we will have considerable trouble with this
within this century. They conservatively say most of it will
not happen exept progressively within the next hundred
years.
That is not what the evidence is saying. I ask you to think
serious about the next ten years. Get your homes paid off
and think hard on these matters.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
In at the Death: What is the origin of the term "in at the
death"?
In fox hunting it's considered very desirable to keep up
with the dogs - or at least to have arrived by the time the
treed fox is killed. Every fox hunter tries to be "in at the
death".
