Has NASA ever scrubbed a mission over stench?

No, but there have been some odor incidents that made it
difficult for astronauts to complete their missions. Once,
the American side of the International Space Station had to
close down for more than 13 hours due to a stench. And the
first historic rendezvous of US and Soviet spacecraft in
1975 was nearly a disaster thanks to a very strong odor that
made it difficult for astronauts to breathe.

Is it true that astronauts wear diapers under their
spacesuits when they venture outside the shuttle?

Yes, but that's all we'll say about that.

Unto All An Iced Tea!

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had
some items in front of him. When the class began,
wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty
mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They
agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and
poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The
pebbles rolled into the open areas between golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full.
They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured
it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He asked once more if the jar was full. The students
responded with a unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two jars of Lipton Ice Tea
from under the table and poured the entire contents into
the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the
sand. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I
want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.
The golf balls are the important things--your family, your
children, your health, your friends, your favorite passions--
things that if everything else was lost and only they
remained, your life would still be full.

"The pebbles are the other things that matter like your
job, your house, your car.

The sand is everything else--the small stuff.

"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued,
"there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The
same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy
on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things
that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that
are critical to your happiness. Play with your children.
Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner
out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time
to clean the house, and fix the disposal.

"Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really
matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired
what the Ice Tea represented.

The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes
to show you that no matter how full your life may seem,
there's always room for an Iced Tea and relaxation."

Your Immune System: Delicate Yet Critical
How It Serves You And Why You Need To Keep It Healthy
Why a carrot is good and a chocolate bar is not...
PART 7 of 9

I want to share a little about a very disruptive and
debilitating condition. I wrote about it a while ago, but not in
much detail. Through thousands of emails, I have learned a lot:
about health care and about people, and it's time to say a
little more.

Normal Ear Function
Each inner ear has two nerves running side by side: the balance
(vestibular) nerve and the hearing (acoustic) nerve. Normally
the balance nerve will send and receive messages twenty four
hours a day to keep your body in whatever position you choose to
be in.bending over, shifting your weight, turning your head,
etc. And the acoustic or hearing nerve is there to receive and
interpret sounds so they will have meaning for you. For
instance, if you are exposed to loud noise, you will be able to
do some correction because it feels so uncomfortable. And
normally sound-wise, you have a lot of silence interspersed with
ordinary noises or unusual tones. You can handle all this
nicely. If you are exposed to some balance problem, chances are
you won't know about it, but the brain senses this imbalance and
sends a message asking the inner ear's "vestibular" or balance
nerve to correct it. Unless you are "hearing -impaired" you will
have these nerves working properly, but you most likely take
their activities for granted. And it's important to know that
each ear and its parts functions fairly independently. Just as
one hand can manage lots of activities, so can the ears.
Although it can be troublesome and often terrifying, Meniere's
is not something that's contagious. Meniere's symptoms usually
occur in only one ear. It affects both ears in only about 30% of
people.

Signs & symptoms that cause most of the difficulty are
characterized by abnormal sensation of movement (vertigo), loss
of hearing, and noises or ringing (tinnitus) in one or both
ears, and pressure or fullness in the ear. Vertigo is most
easily explained as the sensation of a room spinning out of
control, but there are different degrees of this spinning. For
some people it's a very fast spin.for others, it gets to the
point of dropping to the ground without any prior warning! And
still for others, it's a gentle movement, still unpleasant, but
the person can "live with it". For some, it's a dizziness that
comes and goes.usually without warning. Tinnitus is noise: again
different degrees of loudness or shrillness. Hearing fluctuation
is the changes of the sounds: high or low pitches. And pressure
or fullness in the ear is the sensation that there is
"something" in the ear.a very frustrating and uncomfortable
feeling. Our nerves automatically carry through with these
messages or commands. It is our body's intention to be "in
balance" at all times, so it adjusts for any differences.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

-----------------------END DISCLAIMER

Criticism Is Not The Answer

When you write a column such as my perspective you take the
chance of everyone thinking you are criticizing all the
time.

Please think not that way of me. I have too deep an
understanding of human nature to criticize what governments
will or will not do about global warming.

What I do want you to realize concerning that subject is
that while the oil companies want us to continue to use
their products, and we will, we will be accelerating the
effects of climate warming.

In terms of blame or criticizing what value is there in
doing that - the blaming or the criticizing? Mankind will go
on as he has always gone on. He will give no real thought
about tomorrow and respond to circumstances when they jump
up and slap him in the face.

So what, then, is the point of my articles? Merely this. One
day in a future that is much closer than you think you will
find the price of food going right up through the roof. That
is because we no longer produce enough for our needs.

While all that is happening we will see vast unemployment
and rising prices in nearly every quadrant of society. We
will see the money grabbers doing their grabbing. Let them.
Money will serve no value or purpose in a future that will
soon present itself to our reaction.

For those of you who see these things as being possible I
recommend you do what you can to get yourself debt free.
That way you will not subject yourself to your home being
taken away by banks who will conduct business as usual
regardless of universal financial disaster. They will want
it all and more.

If you are debt free then your time and planning can be on
finding and having the food you will need to survive. If
that is your only concern you will be lucky. If you are not
debt free, banks and other creditors will make your life
miserable, possibly even repossess your home and give you
much more to think about than just mere survival.

So think not my writings a criticizm. Think instead they are
a realistic way of looking at a future that most certainly
appears to be on the way.

By the way. This has nothing whatever to do with religious
prophecy. Simply take a look at what is happening. We
presently do not produce enough to feed the number of people
in the world. We are loosing arable land by hundreds of
thousands of acres every year. The population is increasing
dramatically - every day (8 million more people on earth
since Nov 16/06 some 33 days). And the warming climate is
accelerating all these conditions exponentially.

All I ask you to do is to put all this together and figure
out what you will do. Think on that.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Jalopy: How did the "jalopy" get that name?

An old and dilapidated automobile rides more like a horse
than a smooth-running modern car; the motion is "gallop-y"
and from this we get, by softening of the sound of the g,
"jalopy".

Kids' Thoughts!

Often, when I am reading a good book, I stop and thank my
teacher. That is, I used to, until she got an unlisted
number. --Age 15

It would be terrible if the Red Cross Bloodmobile got into
an accident. No, wait. That would be good because if anyone
needed it, the blood would be right there. --Age 5

Think of the biggest number you can. Now add five. Then,
imagine if you had that many Twinkies. Wow, that's five more
than the biggest number you could come up with! --Age 6

The only stupid question is the one that is never asked,
except maybe "Don't you think it is about time you audited
my return?" or "Isn't it morally wrong to give me a warning
when, in fact, I was speeding?" --Age 15

Once, I wept for I had no shoes. Then I came upon a man who
had no feet. So I took his shoes. I mean, it's not like he
really needed them, right? --Age 15

If we could just get everyone to close their eyes and
visualize world peace for an hour, imagine how serene and
quiet it would be until the looting started. --Age 15
