ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

Who started the custom in the Western Hemisphere of wearing
white wedding dresses?
Most Western brides today marry in white, but it wasn't
always so. Before the white dress, brides simply wore their
best dress, whatever color it was. Blue was a favorite. In
the 16th century, the wealthy began favoring white, but the
practice didn't really take off until the reign of Queen
Victoria of England. She chose to marry in white instead of
the silver traditionally worn by royals. The following
little rhyme advised brides as to dress color:
Married in White, you have chosen right, Married in Blue,
your love will always be true, Married in Pearl, you will
live in a whirl, Married in Brown, you will live in town,
Married in Red, you will wish yourself dead, Married in
Yellow, ashamed of your fellow, Married in Green, ashamed to
be seen, Married in Pink, your spirit will sink, Married in
Gray, you will go far away, Married in Black, you will wish
yourself back.
Green dresses were believed to be unlucky unless you were
Irish. The old expression that a woman has a "green gown"
was meant to imply that she was promiscuous. The idea was
that the dress was stained green from rolling in grassy
fields. Different cultures, of course, have different ideas
about color. A red dress in China is the best dress for a
wedding as it denotes happiness.
Is it true that yeast is a living organism?
Yes. The Baker's yeast you keep in your cabinet is actually
tiny one-celled living plants--fungi, to be precise. It's
still living when you buy it at the grocery store and (if
left unopened) can be stored in your pantry for up to a
year. Yeasts are found in an incredible variety of habitats.
The fungus is common on plant leaves and flowers and is also
found on the skin surfaces and intestinal tracts of
warm-blooded animals. Yeasts are also found in soil and in
salt water, where they help to decompose plants and algae.
One gram of yeast, by the way, contains about ten BILLION
cells. Yeasts multiply extremely rapidly. Under ideal
conditions, a yeast manufacturer can grow a single gram of
yeast into more than a dozen TONS of yeast in less than five
days. (If you're a woman, you probably already knew this.)

How To Get The Right Golf Score!
My 5-year-old nephew wanted to caddy for my brother's
golf game. "You have to count my strokes," my brother
told him. "How much is six plus nine plus eight?"
"Five." answered the nephew.
"Okay," my brother said, "let's go."
I love this joke. I golf maybe once every 20 years, so
you can imagine what my scores look like. I need a
nephew like this one and that way I will at least be
accepted at the 19th hole.
I lucked out the other day. I went golfing for the first
time in at least 20 years and guess what? I got a hole in
one. That was certainly the topic of conversation for the
rest of the day. There were many a golfer who wondered
how an amateur could get one when they are out there
every day and haven't even come close.
Yet the joke tells us something else too. It speaks of
integrity. While it is a simple joke, it reveals there are
some people in the world who will do anything to win,
regardless whether it's right or not. To some the end
clearly justifies the means.
These people need a reality check. It does not matter to
me what they do to win. It should not matter to you either.
Let them go their way. However the law of laws will
unmistakably make life miserable for them somewhere
along the line. As ye give so shall it be given unto you,
is the law that will ensure each is properly rewarded for
their thoughts, actions, deeds. So the win at all costs
attitude may not be right for those who practice it. Maybe
the win at all costs save those that are dishonorable
would be a better attitude.
The world will always have those who will take, steal,
cheat, and otherwise get what they have by means
considered unacceptable by most of society. Your choice
is what kind of a "winner" will you be?
How To Get The Right Golf Score!"

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - by Karin Henderson
Meniere's Syndrome
"Meniere's" is a condition affecting the
nerves of one or both inner ears.
PART 4 of 5
Why does it affect people differently? Why is it more severe in
some and not in everyone?
As mentioned previously, the symptoms can vary in intensity and
severity. You have to realize that the human body is different
for each person, so their reactions are completely "their own"
No one CHOOSES to have these symptoms, and they cannot predict
or prevent them.
How did it gets this unusual name?
"Meniere" was a French physician who recognized the group of
common symptoms and gave them his name. It is sometimes easier
for the medical community to give things a name and then
everyone can recognize the required treatment and follow through
quickly without further testing.
Prognosis: what's in store for the Meniere's sufferer?
Most doctors, after exhausting their "traditional" medical
treatments, will tell the person they "have to just live with
it".an immensely difficult and depressing "treatment"! Often
this is seen or discussed as "all being in your head" or having
an over-active imagination! How wrong that is! These symptoms
are as real as having appendicitis: yet it's not recognized the
same way.
This condition has a negative affect on the entire family. Not
only does the person have the attack and knows the very real
loss of control and dignity, but they are also afraid to move in
case any movement will set off even a more severe episode.
Frequently they are speaking to a person that can't hear them
very well, in either one or both ears. That's very frustrating
and tiring. They feel physically exhausted and mentally
terrified. Each episode's onset is so completely out of their
control and can come quickly without any warning. People who are
not familiar with this condition tend to avoid Meniere's
sufferers, thinking they are drunk or dangerous. How sad and
incorrect a perception!

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Many Things From Around The World
As usual things are happening all over the world today.
Iran has passed a bill requiring a change in the way they
deal with the international community on nuclear weapons and
the bill requires they proceed “rapidly” with development of
their own nuclear weapons. They do this “wise” move in a
barbaric reaction to the UN sanctions against them on this
point.
It is as if they really want to tear the world apart. None
are seeking peace, that much is for sure.
Gerald Ford passed away at age 93. It makes me think back on
those times and although they were steeped in their own set
of troubles, Nixon, Watergate and the Viet Nam war, it seems
somehow peaceful by comparison to today.
Egypt has had another outbreak of the bird flu with 10
deaths in the last couple weeks. Let’s hope it doesn’t get
out of Egypt.
Some of the drugs the medical world has been imposing on us
we now find are causing our bones to break easier. Drugs
used to mitigate heartburn have been found to weaken bones.
That’s the kind of thing that happens when doctors, without
question believe drug companies and we, without question,
believe doctors.
I see Nicole Kidman and Kieth Urban are getting back
together again. Seems to me they haven’t been married long
enough to be apart more than to go to the grocery store.
And finally, Microsoft is living up to its history, again.
Windows Vista is not so trouble free after all. In spite of
all the hype coming out of Redmond Washington, the companies
head office, about all the high tech security in Windows
Vista that is apparently a falsehood. Vista appears to be as
full of holes as all its predecessors.
Have you noticed how much of the things we are told,
especially those things that have a lot of people talking,
are all related to money for someone? Microsoft spends a
great deal of money trying to convince us their new product
is the best thing since sliced bread - all so you will go
out to buy it and they can make money. In the end we find
the product is no better than the ones before.
Oh well. When the effects of global warming hit we won’t be
worrying too much over Microsoft.
I have a question for you. Would any of you like me to
unfurl what I see as the progressive steps of how climate
change will affect us? Let me know.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
McCoy: What is the reason we use the phrase "the real McCoy"
to mean "genuine"?
This term became popular because of a story that attained
wide circulation. A prize fighter by the name of McCoy was
being annoyed by a drunk. The pest wanted McCoy to fight
but, being a professional boxer and realizing the man's
condition, McCoy refused. Friends tried to calm down the
drunk by telling him that the man he was annoying was the
famous prize fighter. mcCoy; the drunk didn't believe them
and finally became so annoying that McCoy punched him and
knocked him out. When he came to, the drunk said, "You're
right, he's the real McCoy!"
