What is trepanning?
Trepanning is the oldest surgery known to man, dating
back to at least 10,000 B.C. It's basically boring or cutting
open holes in the head. Why on earth would anyone
willingly have a hole bored into their skull? Well, in days
of yore, it was believed that boring holes in the skull was
a great way to release any evil spirits that might be lurking
in there. It was also thought to be a nifty way to treat
headaches and brain disorders and cure insanity.

Viral Snark-eting: Worm Takes SCO Off The Hook

Last week, the Norvag or MyDoom virus became the
largest and most destructive computer virus in history.
An untold number of computers and personal email
systems have been infected by the email worm, which
has now launched two separate denial of service
attacks on IT firm SCO Feb. 1, and the Microsoft
Corp. Feb. 3.
MyDoom.a, the email worm's initial strand, attacked
software firm SCO on Sunday, culminating in one of
the largest denial of service attacks ever on a single
Web site. Orders contained within MyDoom's coding
forced its militia of infected computer zombies to attack
the SCO site 64 times a second.
Despite efforts by SCO's IT staff to keep the Web site
operational, it went down Sunday morning, and should
remain inaccessible until Feb. 12, when the denial of
service ends, according to McAfee analyst Jimmy Kuo.
Lindon, Utah-based SCO Monday announced it had
moved its Web site to www.thescogroup.com, after
removing its previous URL from the Internet's global
directory at 1 a.m. EST Sunday. The IT firm is reportedly
at the center of a dispute involving the Linux operating
system. SCO sells Unix, an older version of Linux; it
has claimed copyright ownership of the open-source
software and is seeking licensing fees from thousands
of Linux users. The virus is said to have originated in
Russia. SCO is offering a $250,000 reward for the
worm's creators.

Between this virus, this week, and the Janet Jackson
fiasco the parrots have sure been jabbering.
I have personally noticed the mail not functioning as
normal, for the week. Some I don't get, that I know is
coming, and the whole system has been slowed down.
Oh well! I guess that's life in the Windows internet lane.
I thank my lucky stars I use a Mac. While the rest of
the world is down, I just keep rolling along.
The Janet Jackson thing has me considerably amused.
I don't find it shocking in any way. I am, however,
amused and, frankly, disappointed at how easily the
media is manipulated. She got more press and publicity
by doing that than anything she could have done. Even
serious news media gave her the time of day. If life in
North America has come to a point where someone like
that can plan and execute the move she did and get the
attention she is getting, I simply have to shake my head.
That it was an accident is ludicrous. That it was
unplanned, is ridiculous. That she is getting all this press,
is making the press a money grabbing group worse
than she is.
Oh well! It doesn't take much these days to turn the minds
of those who want the center of attention more than the
perpetrator. Years ago you could get such attention if
you showed so much as an ankle. My how we are
growing up.
That's it for today folks. I am sure there will be more
"baring" in our future. If this young woman can get
attention like this, you can bet it will become standard.

By default, Excel opens with three worksheets in each
workbook. To add a new worksheet, choose Insert and
then Worksheet. Excel will add the worksheet and name
it Sheet4. Sheet4 will appear before Sheet1. To move it
to its place after Sheet3, drag the Sheet4 tab to the end
of the tab list and release the mouse button.

Your Skin: A Really Close
Friend Under Scrutiny

The next function of your skin is to regulate the body's
temperature and to react to "sensory perceptions". You will
understand this term in a minute. How can you "see" this
function using your magnifying glass? It shows up very
quickly in our next experiment. If you put a few drops of
cold water or an ice cube on your arm, what happens?
You get "goosebumps" and you shiver and some parts
of your body react more quickly than others. For instance,
if you put an ice cube on your leg, it doesn't create quite
the same uncomfortable reaction as it does on your
forearm. Under scrutiny, this skin are becomes pale,
maybe even whitish. The blood vessels under the surface
constrict to conserve heat and energy. The reverse will
be true if you do this with heat. (That's what burns are all
about.) The blood vessels will expand, allowing more fluid
to bring energy and warmth /heat. (Hyperemia: increased
blood supply) You will see pinkish skin. The body adjusts
to moderate changes all day long and you probably
wouldn't be aware of it. You will become aware of any
extreme temperature changes. The sensors (sensory
nerves) in your skin will also let you know right away of
any need to change your position. Those sensors aren't
visible under a magnifying glass in healthy uninjured skin.

the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures

Mae, too, as a Mother, was very pleased with life here and
with her son David. Lately, however, she had yearnings to
go back home to meet with her first born son, Eric. He had
graduated med school and was now a doctor in Philadelphia.
David has assured her Eric was fine, for he knew, but that
did not sate the pull found within a Mother's heart.
The villagers had woven a wreath of flowers and presented
it to Sien. He loved them, the flowers, because they smelled
so pretty. But, they were without water and subject to being
jostled. They would not last long. Nonetheless, it was an
expression of love and he appreciated it.
The fire drew to a close late in the night. Many of the kids
had been long asleep on their parents laps. The group
broke up and went to their separate huts. Sien said his
good byes and left for points unknown. Mazunta and Eloise
made their way home to their hut.
"Gee it was nice to see Sien again. I have not seen nor
heard about him for over a year." said Eloise.
"Bueno, he is a nice man. I am glad it was he who worked
to guide you through your early days. He apparently had
influence over David and Pam, as well as Boolanga. His
works are good." said Mazunta.
Eloise put the baby down and the pair got into bed and
held each other for a long time before drifting off.
The morning broke clear and sunny. The village was not
busy until well into the morning. Most everyone was up but
folks liked to sit by the morning fire with a beverage and
spend time with the family before everyone went their way.
In North America it is often the supper table where families
touch base. Here it was always in the morning, and often
at supper, too.
Mae spoke with David this morning. Their habit, too, was
the morning family thing. "David, I didn't realize it until last
night. I have been missing Eric. I would like to go see him.
I am not even sure he really knows where you and I are."
"Okay, Mom, we'll go today if you like. Would that be alright
with you Pam?" he asked.
"Absolutely, Hon. Eric is your brother and must surely want
to see his Mother and brother as much as you want to see
him. You may end up staying a couple days. That would
be alright too." answered Pam.
"Okay, Mom. We'll leave after I speak with the men at work.
How's that?" asked David.
"That would be fine, David. I have no clothes anymore."
answered Mae.
"Don't worry about that Mom. We'll have you dressed real
nice when we get there. Do you want to stop and see the
Henrys, too?" asked David.
"If we have time that would be fine." she said.
"What about seeing Dad?" he asked.
"No thank you." she said curtly.
Mae found she no longer had any desire to see Frank Wiley.
That was a chapter in her life she had long passed. It was over.
David went to speak with the work crew, while Mae and
Pam tidied up after the morning breakfast.
David returned. "Ready Mom?"
"I'm a little nervous, David." she said.
"Sure you are Mom. Remember I'll be right with you.
Remember, too, you have no responsibilities. You left
nearly all the family money to Eric. You set him up pretty
good. You, being here is as it should be. No need to feel
guilty, if that is what you are thinking." said David.
"David, I've been meaning to ask if you ever felt left out,
with me leaving the family money to Eric?
"No, Mom. I had all that money left as a result of getting
home from the first trip. Then I proceeded to discover money
was not what I thought it was. I still have a bank account full
of it. And I don't need it or want it. No, Mom. I am more than
happy right where I am and doing what I am doing, right
Pam?" he asked.
"If you say so. I know I want for nothing, so I don't know what
having money would do for us. I can't think of any better
place in the world to raise kids." she answered.
"I'm glad to hear you two say that. I have often wondered if I
did the right thing." said Mae.

Oh! I have some news. I learned last night that I am going to
be a great-grandpa. Kids these days. It makes me reminisce
a little. The young lady is twenty two years old. By the time
my wife and I were that old we had two children and a third
on the way. But, I am pleased. She is a very nice young lady
and her husband is a winner. They are much in love and this
is simply another aspect of that love.
