TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

Why didn't trepanning kill the patients?

How do black and white stripes camouflage zebras?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

How long does it take to bore a hole in the skull?

Trepanning was NOT for the timid. The boring was
done WITHOUT anesthesia, while the person was
awake, and could take up to an hour or more to finish.

How long was trepanning practiced?

Trepanning was especially popular during the
Middle Ages and the procedure continued in popularity
until well into the 18th century. The strangest fact
of all: trepanning STILL has its adherents. Modern supporters
of trepanning believe that it opens you up to a higher
consciousness and returns to you the imagination of
childhood. Trepanning is still practiced by the legitimate
medical profession as well. It's now used to treat blood
leaking in the brain, causing pressure.

Don't Do This!
by Ken Darby

A fellow walks into a bar, and it's empty except for the
bartender at the other end of the bar washing some glasses.
The bartender says, "Have a seat anywhere and I'll be with
you in a few minutes. There's a bowl of peanuts on the
counter, have some while you wait."

So the fellow sits down and grabs a handful of peanuts,
but he hears someone say, "Hey, that's a sharp suit you've
got on." Well, the bar is empty, so the guy wonders where
in the world that voice is coming from.

He takes another handful of peanuts, and again, a voice
says, "And that's a nice tie that goes really well with
that suit." By now the fellow is really baffled. The
bartender comes over and says, "Ok, what'll you have,
mister?"

The fellow says, "Listen, before I order, I want to ask
you a question. Where are those voices coming from?"

The bartender replies, "Oh, I forgot to tell you, the
peanuts are complimentary.

Wow! It took me a while to figure this one out. Maybe
I am half asleep today, but this joke didn't really
register with me until I thought about it for a while.

Don't do this. In all your writing make things as clear
as you possibly can. If your prospect, your reader,
your audience has to take time out to think about
what you have said, only to understand it, there is
little likelihood they will react the way you want.

If your audience has to do any thinking at all, about
what you say, it should be thinking about acting
or not acting, NOT thinking about "What was it
you said?"

A long time ago, and many times, I was advised to
keep any writing I do at the grade six level. That
meant to use words, phrases and terms those in
grade six would understand.

I remember thinking, at the time, I considered that
nearly an insult to my readers. After all I was dealing
with folks much more educated and sophisticated
than that. Over the years, however, I came to
understand what that instruction meant.

It did not mean to write or speak from an attitude
"above" your reader or listener. It meant that nearly
all folks can easily understand when material is
written at that level. The object of the exercise, after
all, is to promote action, not to confuse or have a
reader take extra time just figuring out what you said.

Besides, it is a joy to write and even a joy to read when
things are clear enough to require little effort to
comprehend. Readers like that because there is
far too much to read, and to do, in living one's life
these days.

Writing at the grade six level is a compliment to the
reader. It invites your reader's attention because
he knows you are not going to make him/her work.

So, please remember, you can make it
confusing, but - - -

Your Skin: A Really Close
Friend Under Scrutiny
by Karin Henderson
PART 5 of 13

Another function of healthy skin is that of elimination. Normally
you loose salts, water, and heat in regulated amounts.
However, the more active you are, the more you loose of
these elements. Then you have to replenish more to keep
the body's internal fluid requirements in balance. Visible
evidence of this function is a bit difficult to find, but if you run
hard for a while (i.e. a marathon), you will build up salts, and
other waste products on the surface. This is the excretion of
body fluids by the sweat glands through pores in the skin.
Let's look more closely at a forehead of ...sweat! It's quite
fascinating if the person will let you examine the fluid running
down his face. But picture a FLAT surface of skin...just flat.
Then add a bead of water. Now look at the surface area
available. That new surface area is being heated or most
likely cooled by the air in the environment. In comparison,
the flat surface is tiny. So if you have many beads of water,
i.e. sweat, imagine how cool you can get by running. This
is temperature control in a simplistic form. This is also the
reason you get cold after a shower if you don't dry yourself,
including your hair, completely. Now this might be very
comfortable and refreshing to a runner, but it can be harmful
to an older or younger person. Knowing this connection
will help you keep older and younger relatives happier and
healthier. I see this principle at work in homes and care
facilities all the time. The caregiver is hot because of the
work involved, and rationalizes that the patient is equally
hot, thus giving only a thin blanket. And the patient or
resident has adapted and learned not to ask for extra things.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.

Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.

The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.

The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"Mom, money is Eric's thing. He is a lot like Dad. That is his
world and you and I left him to it. I imagine we will find that
out today when we get there. It does not bother me at all. Let
him live his life by the choices he makes." said David.

"I hope you don't mean that in a cynical way." observed Mae.

"Mom. You know I love all mankind. You also know I, nor
anyone for that matter, can afford to think ill of anyone. I
merely said in a matter of fact way, without any emotion,
that Eric, like the rest of us must accept the results of his
thinking. I am more than happy here and regardless of
anything Eric might appear to have, it has no effect on me.
I cannot wish for more than I have. I can manifest anything
I want. You know that." responded David.

"I know, David. I just wanted to make sure there were no
animosities hiding in any closets." said Mae.

"Well, Mom, Pam, I'm all set." said David.

"You two go along and have a good time. I'll not expect
your return until you appear. If you see anyone I know,
say hi." said Pam.

David held out his hand. When Mae took it they were
immediately in a upper class neighborhood in
Philadelphia.

"I brought you here first, Mom. That is Eric's house
there." said David, pointing to a lavish estate type of
yard and house. The yard had to be over an acre in
size, and had a six foot stone wall surrounding it.

Realizing they had not yet changed their clothes,
David immediately saw his Mother in a neat, trim, dark
blue skirt, white bouse, dark blue matching jacket, and
a light spring coat, new shoes and pantyhose.

He dressed himself in a suit to match the color of Mae's
business suit ensemble.

"Gee, I haven't been dressed like this in years." said Mae.

"You like?" asked David.

"I'm not sure I want to dress like this any more, but it
is appropriate for here and now. Thank you." replied
Mae.

"Mom, Eric is not here. He is working. He has an office
downtown, and he deals with upper crust type of clientele.
We'll go there now. I just wanted to have you see his
place first. It appears as if Eric is doing very well." said
David, although he was picking up vibes of trouble
under the surface.

"Come. Let's go see Eric at his office." said David,
holding out his hand.

Mae took it, and they were now standing outside a large
high rise office tower in downtown Philadelphia.

"Eric's office is in here. He is in his office now, and his
schedule for the day is pretty light. He might see us
today." said David.

"What do you mean "might"?" said Mae, "Don't you think
that after not seeing his Mother for so many years he
will be happy to see us?" asked Mae.

"Mother, he has been living his life without you and I.
Suddenly appearing in his office could be an imposition
to his thinking. He has no need of us. We must remember
Eric thinks mainly of money. He is somewhat like Dad,
in that he is cold when it comes to people relationships
and has a tendency to be "warm" only when there is
money in it." said David.

"Oh David! That's an awful thing to say. Eric is your
brother." said Mae.

"Well, I'll tell you what, Mom. I can make both of us
invisible for a while, if you like, so we can look in on
things without being seen. That will tell you who Eric is.
Would you like to do that?" asked David.

"No, David. That would be too much like spying. We can
take our chances straight on, even though I may not
like it." answered Mae.

They walked into the building and went to look up Eric
on the building directory. He was on the thirty seventh
floor. Up they went.

When they arrived at the door to Eric's office they read
the impressive number of qualifications Eric showed,
by letters behind his name. He apparently taken internal
medicine and had achieved his Masters Degree.

"You are the possessor of a great and wonderful power.
This power, when properly applied, will bring confidence

heartache. What is your greatest power? The power to choose."
---- J. Martin Kohe

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

There was once a hillbilly who was extremely sad with life
because people always made fun of him. He decided to do
something about it. He sat back and thought about it.

Suddenly he thought - "I have never seen anyone making fun of
Italians. So, if I start talking and behaving like them, no one
will be able to make out that I am a hillbilly and make fun of
me."

He went into isolation for three months and after a lot of
practice, he walked confidently into a shop and said, "I am a
very hungry. Give me some pepperoni and zucchini."

Immediately, the man behind the counter said "Are you a
hillbilly?" This guy was taken aback and he repeated his
request. The man behind the counter said, "Are you a hillbilly
or not?"

This man was finally very ashamed and amazed at the shop
owner's discerning ability and so he admitted to the fact after
which he asked, "But how did you know?"

The shopkeeper replied, "This is a hardware store!"
