Why didn't trepanning kill the patients?
Often, it did. Scientists believe that only sixty to
seventy percent of patients survived the procedure.
Still, some patients had the procedure performed
repeatedly and continued to survive. Prince Philip
of Orange was allegedly trepanned seventeen times.
And at least one patient was trepanned more than
fifty times in a space of two months. Generally,
boring the hole in the skull was not what killed the
patient. It was the infection that often followed the
procedure that did it.
How do black and white stripes camouflage zebras?
It doesn't appear to make sense. There isn't any black
and white shrubbery in Africa for zebras to hide in.
How does being striped help them to avoid being
someone else's dinner? The answer is in something
scientists call "disruptive coloration." The alternating
stripes break up and obscure the outline of the zebra,
making it difficult for predators to focus on the animal,
particularly when many zebras are running together
all at once. Instead of a solid shape, the predator sees
a jumble of apparently unrelated forms. Some experts
think the stripes may serve another purpose: avoiding
the tsetse fly. These biting flies prefer to snack on large,
dark, moving animals. The zebra's stripes may make it
difficult for the biting bugs to find a single dark region
to alight on.

Do You Know What You're Doing?

Many years ago my wife was to knitting what Tiger Woods
is to golf. She designed exotic patterns with ease.
There was an occasion when we had lunch in a real
Chinese restaurant (only one person spoke partial English,
all menus were in Chinese).
When she saw the hand-written menu she was so
impressed with the calligraphy she tucked the menu in
her purse. Some months later I saw the result, a stunning
white sweater with the Chinese symbols hand-stitched
down the front.
She received compliments galore until one cocktail
party when we met a distinguished Chinese physician
who asked my wife where she got the symbols. He then
wanted to know if she knew what they meant.
"I'm afraid to ask," she said, "but tell me anyway."
Even she had to laugh when he told her they read,
"This is a cheap dish--but good."
Boy! Do you see a red face on this woman? I do.
Unfortunately I see something else, too.
I see the number of times I barged right in to something
without much forethought, only to find I was in the middle
of a situation I knew nothing about. Have you ever
done that?
If not, you aren't human. We've all done this or something
like it in our lives. Most of the time it ends up in
embarrassment, but it can end up costing relationships
or money, too.
That's why I like jokes so much. Everyone of them has
a "life's lesson" for us. All one need do is look.
The point of this conversation is, please, look, study and
think before you leap. I will usually get better results,
faster, and save the embarrassment.

When you want to modify the Word 2000 dictionaries,
choose Tools then go to Options. Click the
Spelling And Grammar tab. Now, click Dictionaries, click
Edit and make your changes.
NOTE that editing the dictionaries turns off
automatic spell checking for the current document. To
re-enable spell checking, choose Toolsgo to Options and click
the Spelling And Grammar tab. Select the "Check spelling as
you type" check box and click OK.

Your Skin: A Really Close

And speaking of hair, did you know that your body is
almost completely covered in hairs...tiny ones? The only
two parts of the skin that don't have any are the palms
of your hands and the soles of your feet. You probably
know that the hair on your head is kept lubricated by
oil glands and that the rest of your body had the as well?
Both the sweat (sebaceous) glands and the (lubricating)
oil glands can get clogged. So keep your skin clean
and dry, and most problems can be avoided. But
remember that the aging skin has also has the "less"
factor "built into" it. Take your magnifying glass and do
some more research. You can probably see pores.
They open onto the skin and look like pinholes. They
are all the more apparent as they get clogged. Finding
an oil gland is more difficult. They are usually under the
surface of your skin. Your face is the easiest place to
see one or two. By now you have probably seen a lot of
normal skin...more than you have ever seen. This gives
you a sense of direction in the next step ...the care and
handling of your skin. One function I haven't mentioned
yet is the "storage function" of the skin. It stores fat and
vitamins. And it needs both of these... Yes, it needs fat.
Your body needs lubrication for its moving parts just as
a car does. But you can care nicely for it if you give it
(eat) polyunsaturated fats or at best, unsaturated fats.
But stay away from saturated fats. Here's a quick way to
remember which is which. Saturated means full of...so
"unsaturated' means not full of, and polyunsaturated
means lots of non full of or "few". So you want the fats
that are the healthiest: the "polyunsaturates". (It's no
difficult to learn these terms once you start to
understand the parts of a word.)

on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures

They walked in and the office was empty. There were
signs of a secretary having been at the front desk but
she was not there now. Mae walked up to the reception
counter and rang a bell that was sitting there.
They heard some quick shuffling from somewhere down
a hallway. Soon a pretty, dark haired, receptionist came
around the corner from the direction of the sounds. She
was somewhat flushed, and was straightening her clothes
as she came to her desk.
"Yes. May I help you?" she said.
"We would like to see Dr. Wiley, please." said Mae.
"Are you a patient of his?" asked the young woman.
"No." answered Mae.
"I'm sorry. Dr. Wiley isn't taking on any new patients. His
calendar is full. May I help you find another doctor
perhaps?" she asked.
Mae looked at David. There was an immediate
understanding between them.
Mae said calmly, "Miss, you can tell him his Mother is
here to visit him."
"Oh! Yes Mrs. Wiley I'll tell him immediately." she said as
she disappeared around the corner from which she had
just come.
Mae and David overheard some talking.
"Your Mother is here and she is with another man. She
wants to visit, she said." said the woman.
"Can't be. I have no idea where my Mother is. She left
the country years ago and I haven't heard from her since.
Good thing likely. I would probably have to be looking
after her affairs for her. That brother of mine sure ended
up being a nobody." said the man.
"Maybe that is your brother with her." said the woman.
Mae and David looked at one another again. Mae
was hurt.
David spoke to her mind, "Don't be hurt over this Mom.
Eric thinks he is a bigshot. He no longer cares for
anyone unless there is money attached. He really doesn't
think it is possible for you to be here. Funny, isn't it, how
things change when one has money. He thinks he doesn't
need any person in the world." The thoughts were powerful
enough to reach Mae, who understood.
Mae just turned and looked at David, then nodded.
"Are you going to come out and see them?" asked
the woman.
"Oh, alright, then I'll get rid of them." said the male
voice.
The receptionist came around the corner again.
"Dr. Wily will see you now." she said somewhat aloofly
"He is in the office just around the corner. You can't
miss it." she continued, and then sat down at her desk
and pretended to work.
Mae and David walked around the corner and into the
hall. On the right side were several offices used for
medical examinations, and on the left was a huge office
in which was a couch, a couple easy chairs, a coffee
table, some comfortable office chairs in front of a huge
wood desk and Eric sitting in a large leather chair behind
the desk.
They entered the room and Eric was busying himself with
papers, looking up only when David cleared his throat.
There was complete surprise on Eric's face.
He jumped up and came around the desk with his arms
held out as if to hug his Mother.
Mae surprised everybody. "No need to hug me Eric, that
is unless you are prepared to look after my affairs because
your nobody brother can't do it."
Eric stopped dead in his tracks. He blushed, flustered,
stammered and tried to speak.
"I heard you trying to make out with that receptionist out
there. She, too, was flustered, red, and embarrassed when
she first came to see us. We overheard your speaking with
her, Eric. It has become quite clear you would rather not
see us today, or any day, for that matter. Is that the kind of
man you have now become Eric?" said Mae. She was really
pouring it on. She had been hurt and insulted by her own
son, and the wrath of a Mother is not something you
want to receive.
