Why do fawns have spots?
Fawns are wobbly-legged and vulnerable to predators.
Their spots help them out a bit by making them less
visible. Because they often hunt in dim light, predators
have eyes that are sensitive to motion, but poor at
distinguishing colors, details, and shapes. A spotted
fawn sitting quietly in the leaves is nearly invisible to
the eyes of potential attackers. (Fortunately, fawns
know instinctively to stay still when danger lurks
nearby.) Fawns are further protected by their almost
complete lack of odor. For the first two weeks of their
lives, they're scentless. When fawns grow up, they no
longer need their spots. As adults, they rely on their
speed and acute senses to avoid attack.
What is mimicry?
Mimicry is another technique some creatures use to
protect themselves. It's different from camouflage, but
serves the same purpose. Basically, mimicry involves
making yourself look like something else. Some
completely harmless insects, for instance, bear the
same coloration as poisonous or bad-tasting bugs to
make predators think they'd better not come close.
Other insects and animals make themselves look like
objects. The "walking stick" insect hangs motionless
during the day and appears to be a twig! The giant
swallowtail butterfly produces caterpillars that look
like bird droppings! Unfortunately, it's not just the prey
that employ mimicry. Predators do it too, to fool prey
into letting down their guard.

Patent Depending: Today's Hearing Could Seal Fate
Of Streaming Media

A case set to be heard today could determine who
controls streaming media. Acacia Technologies Group,
a company that claims to hold patents to Digital Media
Transmission (DMT) technology, will duke it out against
13 adult entertainment companies before a judge in a
U.S. District Court in Irvine, Calif. The outcome could
set a precedent regarding the validity of Acacia's claim
that its patents covering audio and video distribution
give it the right to charge licensing fees to stream
virtually anything via the Web, from sexy shower
scenes to re-purposed TV spots.
"It's a crucial day for the industry," declares Dan Rayburn,
executive-VP of StreamingMedia.com, an online
resource for the streaming media industry, where he
has been evangelizing the case against Acacia.
Rayburn is concerned that "people just see it as an
adult issue" and don't realize the impact a ruling in
favor of Acacia could make.

Ad Volume Rises

Click-through rates were down for the fourth
quarter 2003 -- for rich media in particular -- but
conversion remains strong, according to DoubleClick's
fourth-quarter Ad Serving Trend Report.
DoubleClick attributes the decline in click-through
rates to the increased volume of ads served online,
but maintains that conversion rates have stayed strong.
DoubleClick defines conversion as a user taking come
kind of action according to the goals of the advertiser,
whether it's a sale, increased traffic, or member
registration.
"DoubleClick's latest Ad Serving Trend Report reflects
what we've been seeing for the past few quarters,
particularly that online advertising is driving conversion
for marketers. We know, for example, that the holiday
season was particularly strong for online retailers, and
many of them successfully used online advertising as a
vehicle," said Doug Knopper, Senior Vice President
and General Manager, Advertiser & Publisher
Solutions, DoubleClick.

I post these excerpts as I find them. They come from
assorted media research groups. I do this because
many marketers are not into doing their own research
and much of the information I find actually has a
bearing on the lives of internet marketers.
I also find it interesting because it reflects how you, I
and all of us react to things on the net.
As time goes on and the net "settles down" we will be
able to notice predictable patterns in the way folks use
the net. The only thing then that will keep us awake
will be new products, services, methods, and that
seems to be changing daily.
Remember, this is the year the internet will disappear.
That is to say, the majority of the world will be using the
internet so much they will no longer think of it as unique,
or different, but simply an ordinary part of daily life.
Soon, too, we will see the net and television, combined,
become a regular part of our day. I like this stuff. It makes
everyday like Christmas.

But care and feeding of the body has to include the
entire body. So keeping it clean, well fed, rested,
exercised, and respected will pay dividends in a
healthy, long life. While you still have the handy
magnifying glass out, I thought you might also want
to examine a few abnormal conditions. And what
they could look like.
In the very beginning I said one of the functions was
the protection against injury or infection. You would
recognize "injury" compared to a normal skin fairly
quickly because of its pain. but an "infection" might
be a bit more difficult to recognize. The body doesn't
like abnormal things in it. In order to get rid of any, it
sets up a defense mechanism or reaction. This delivery
system brings extra fluid and many white blood cells
to wash away the damaged cells or toxins.

And with all of this comes heat. So what you would
you see if you stubbed your toe really seriously? It
wouldn't take very many hours to show a purplish
tinge from the ruptured blood vessels. And within
minutes you would feel pain as perceived by the sensors
and you would feel heat. You would also see a very
tight skin from the increased fluid, collecting under the
skin layer. And if you were very observant, you would
see the surrounding tissues filling up and getting larger
as the fluid overflows the immediate area. With not tear
in the skin, this is called "closed" trauma. Now pretend
you cut your toe while stubbing it severely. As soon as
you bring the "inside" of your body in contact with the
outside (contaminated) world, you introduce the chance
of infection, most likely an form of bacteria. This is "open"
trauma. You would be seeing the same as before, but
now because the injury needs more help in the form
of specific blood cells to fight this intruder, you will find
in a day or so, something resembling the Pillsbury
dough boy....tight and very hot skin.

made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.

Eric was struck dumbfounded. He just stood there not
knowing what to say or do. It was clear he had been
caught with his hand in the cookie jar, so to speak. He
had been caught red handed and he knew it. There
was no defense for his present situation.
Mae went on, "You're just like your Father and if you
don't look out you will end up in the same family-less
fiasco. You think you can get away with this stuff? You
think your wife doesn't know, or your kids? If so then
the brains it took for you to become a doctor have
certainly left you. There is nothing more stupid than
trying to sate your sexual desires in ways that hurt others.
What do you think started the trouble between your
Father and I? I am ashamed of you, hurt by you. What
allows you to think of your Mother and brother like that?
What have we done to hurt you? Did you not receive
all the family estate and David nothing?"
Mae was going on knowing the relationship between
all three of them was changed forever. There would be
no way Eric could again be restored to the same level
within his Mother's heart, that he first held. The
relationship with his brother, too, was permanently
changed.
"We came to visit you, Eric, because it has been so long
since we have seen you. We had no idea you had
turned on us so completely as your words and attitude
have shown. You have no idea how deeply you have
cut into your own Mother's heart." said David, "Each of
us reaps the rewards of our own thinking, Eric. I am glad
I am not in your shoes, for your rewards are going to
hurt. Your family is already suffering from your actions,
and you know it."
Dr. Eric Wiley, once the pride of his Mother's heart, stood
there with every word landing on his ears striking as if
being struck with a judge's gavel. He could think of
nothing to say or do that could or would correct the
situation.
Mae turned to leave.
"W -w - wait! Mo - Mother wait." he said.
Mae turned back.
"Please sit." Eric bid both Mae and David.
"You caught me on a bad day. You don't know the
pressures I'm under. You don't know my life, or, for
that matter anything about me. You don't know my wife.
You haven't met my kids, your grandchildren. You know
nothing about me. How dare you come into my office
and accuse me like that when it is you who deserted
me?" Eric was striking back.
"Eric, I am not here to have you accuse me, in an effort
to switch blame and the focus of this conversation. You
are a man, over the age twenty one. It has been a long
time since I held any sway over your decisions. I spoke
the way I did because those were your words I heard,
and your actions I saw. Your feeble attempt to sidestep
the issue and blame me for your troubles won't work,
Eric. Is that all you called me back for?" said Mae as
she began to rise.
"No. No Mother. Sit. No I have been wrong. I apologize.
Please sit and stay. I have little doing today. I am sorry
for what you heard. I have been wrong. I know it. Stay,
please stay." he said.
But the bonds had been broken. Any attempt, now, to
retie them would be futile. Mae and David knew it. Eric
was still trying to make things work, in a foolish and
childish effort to resume things as they once were.
No go.
They sat and talked for a while, chit chat about nothing
in particular. Eric enquired about where they had been,
where they lived, what they were doing.
Then it suddenly hit him. "What do you mean, David?
What do you mean it is already hurting my wife and family?
You don't even know my wife and family. You don't even
know where I live. You know nothing about me." said Eric,
temper returning.
David simply sat there, calm. "That time you had sex with
your neighbor's wife, at the New Years party. Your
wife knows about that, plus she knows of you affair with
the receptionist you just fired, a month ago. She is even
now speaking with an attorney about her options. You
have not treated her well, neither your children, Frank Jr.
and Mary. Your wife Sharon is deeply hurt. You think
because you make a lot of money that everything will be
alright. You step on people any way you want because
you have money. You will soon see where that gets
you." replied David.
