TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
What is the fastest time someone has climbed the
102 flights of stairs?
Does ANYTHING live in the Dead Sea?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Has anyone attempted to climb the Empire State
Building from the outside or parachute off the top?
Yes, indeedy. French daredevil Alain Robert (known
as "Spiderman") scaled the Empire State Building
several years ago and was arrested upon reaching the
top. In 1986 two amateur parachutists successfully
jumped from the 86th floor observatory and were
arrested upon landing. A few years before THAT, two
people with backpacks (hiding parachutes) jumped off
the 86th floor observatory, landed in the street, jumped
into cabs and disappeared! Visitors to the Empire
State Building with backpacks are now searched
before entering.
What would happen if a penny was tossed from the
top of the Empire State Building?
It won't hit the ground! Due to the shape of the Empire
State Building and the wind current updraft created by
the shape, coins tossed from upper floors are blown
against the building's facade and land on the setback
roof areas on the 81, 72, 30, 25, 21 or 6 floors. Hypothetically
speaking, however, if the penny COULD reach the
ground, it has been speculated that it would reach
175 mph (falling sideways so it has little wind resistance).
That speed should make the penny powerful enough to
drive it straight through the roof of a car! Studies have
shown, however, that coins tend to tumble as they fall
and experience quite a bit of wind resistance. In THAT
case, the penny would probably be harmless.

CAN WE TALK?
by Rhoberta Shaler, PhD
Do those words, 'Can we talk?', encourage you to
communicate, or strike terror into your heart? For many
folks, the latter is true. They have learned that the person's
next words may bedifficult to hear. It is common to expect
confrontation to follow, and it can be intimidating.
It is so much easier to communicate than to engage in
communication. What's the difference? To communicate
indicates information going out. Send out a press release.
Leave voice-mail. Post a bulletin. Write a memo. Engage
in communication requires information going in both
directions. No problem with the first. Often, big problems
with the second.
What has communication taught you in the past? Have
you had positive, warm, loving discussions where
difficulties could be spoken and heard? Ones in which
feelings were understood and accepted? Terrific! Then,
'Can we talk?' sounds like a marvelous opportunity to
deepen and strengthen your relationship. If that has
not been your experience, there are some guidelines
that may be useful to you.
As George Bernard Shaw says, "The problem with
communication is the illusion that it has occurred." You
want to be heard and the other person wants to be heard
also. So the first important thing is your willingness to
listen as well as speak. What's scary about listening?
The other probably wants you to change a behavior. That
can cause you to feel insecure and defensive. If
you behave from either of those two places, you know
where that will lead. Either you'll cower and feel bad,
or, you'll get angry and feel bad, or you'll leave and
feel bad. Not much of a choice!
So, first be willing to enter the conversation will equal
willingness to speak and listen. Then, take the next
step. Be willing to respond to what you hear, rather than
to react. Big difference. A great place to begin is to take
a slow breath in through your nose and out slowly
through your mouth and ask yourself, "What do I want
as the result of this exchange?" This increases your
consciousness and helps you remain centered.
Then, simply ask for more information. "Please tell
me more." Why would you do something as risky as
asking for more? So that you are fully informed before
you respond. Makes sense, doesn't it?
Now you have done another very good thing. You
have demonstrated interest in the speaker. You have
also followed the good advice of Steven Covey when
he said: "Seek first to understand, then be understood."
It buys you time and information. Very wise.
When you do speak, speak about yourself and your
perceptions, feelings and desires. Make a conscious
effort to remove the word 'you' from your conversation
at this point. Tell the other what you see, feel, and hear.
You can use a sentence like this, "When __________
happens, I feel __________. What would make that
easier/better/more productive would be if
___________ could happen. " Notice, no mention
of the other person. Only speak of events.
OK, OK, you want to say something like "When you
speak to me in that tone of voice, my skin crawls and
I want to smack you." Take a deep breath. Ask yourself
what you want from this exchange. If the answer is to
never see this person again in my life. Say it any way
you like. It won't matter. If, perchance, you will see this
person again and you truly want to improve the
communication, one way to express your feelings
would be: "When I hear a voice that sounds
condescending (or like the one my father used when
he was mad), I get very upset. I cannot hear what is
being said because I am so affected by the tone of
voice. In fact, it irritates me to the point of just wanting
to lash out. I want this relationship to work (or improve)
and I want to be able to listen."
Now, if this is a totally new way for you to express
yourself, that other person may be in shock for a
moment or two. In fact, it may take them a while to
believe your new approach is honest. Just keep doing
it. It will become second nature to you and others will
begin to respond very positively. Sure, in the beginning,
it may feel very awkward and, even, silly. You may
feel that you should just be able to be accepted the
way you are with no need to change. You're right, of
course, if you want to risk the other person avoiding
you or going away altogether.
These guidelines are only for those who value their
relationships and want to give them the best chance
to be both respectful and improving.

Your Skin: A Really Close

PART 9 of 13
LACERATIONS
A laceration is a cut with torn and jagged edges. In order
for it to heal properly, the edges need to "cleaned up"
and fastened back together. There are several ways to
do this...tapes, clips, stitches. It all depends on the location
and the size of the cut. What you will see are very ragged
edges that appear shredded. Hence the need to clean
them up. You would never be able to match one edge
to another. You will also see the effects of the "inflammatory
system" at work as it brings in extra blood cells. You would
also FEEL the effects of this cut and its jagged edges as it
would impact on many nerve endings, resulting in a lot of pain.
ABRASIONS are the result of wearing down the skin surface.
Two good examples would be the friction "burns" you get
when you rub your elbow on a sheet for a long while, as in
care facilities. There it would probably be called "shearing".
One of my "favorites" is the damage done to your backside
in motorcycle accidents as you slide. Ouch! I have picked
a lot of gravel out of people in my OR (operating room)
days! You would be looking at raw flesh, with blood and
tissue intermingled: not a pretty sight. And if you can't stand
that kind of thing, forget about this experiment. But do a
good deed for someone in a nursing facility
get them a
BIG bottle of quality hand and body lotion. They will
appreciate it tremendously! (So will the staff!)

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------
Mae and David left.
What had started out as a good day for Dr. Eric Wiley, had
suddenly turned very sour. Inside himself he knew David
was right. But Eric had a stubborn streak of pride he learned
from his Father. That was his number one adversary. If he
listened to that he would be doomed to lose his wife and
family as well as his reputation and practice. He had his
challenges. Pride is like alcoholism. It will take you all the
way down into the very depths of the lowest human life this
planet can support, before you finally learn the truth. Some
are lucky and learn sooner, but it can take you deep.
Mae and David walked to the elevator and rode down stairs.
The walked out onto the sidewalk and down the street.
Finding a restaurant, they went in, sat down and ordered
coffees.
"Well, that was some experience." said Mae, "I had no idea
Eric had become so much like his Father. I guess that is one
of the problems with living in South America as we do. It
relaxes you to a point where you can see right through those
who are dishonest. You can see immediately those who are
not genuine, who are working an agenda of their own. They
are all like sheep. They follow the pattern without any real
depth of thought. I am so glad to be away from this phoniness,
David, you would not believe. I am glad you took me down
to South America. There I can count on my friends."
"He worked so hard to get through Med School, Mom, that
when he finally got to where he had some money it all went
straight to his head. It is like Father. He felt, maybe still does,
that money is the way to be powerful. It is so foolish a thought
I find myself embarrassed thinking of the time when I, too, felt
that way. It is such a wrong road to take, yet the entire world
pursues it, like lemmings to the slaughter." responded David,
"What would you like to do now, go to the Henry's?"
"I think that would be nice. I'd like to see some of Pinehill
again for a while. I'm in a bit of a state of shock yet, though,
so let's finish our coffee first."
They sat and slowly sipped on their coffees, listening to
the hustle and bustle of the days events in the coffee shop.
People were coming and going all the while, each on a
mission of their own.
Listening to the conversation was really an education. People
were speaking of nearly everything, yet all of it was shallow,
meaningless talk of things they were involved with. It was like
a banter going on that allowed them never to have a look
at themselves or the realities of life. Reality to them was
merely the result of having or not having money, nothing else.
They floated from day to day, from relationship to relationship
as if in a daze. Not one took thought.
David thought to himself "My goodness. These people are
weak. If threatened they will band together and strike out to
kill that which they do not understand. None is strong within
themselves. It is the plague of living in a city or in a crowd."
"Are you ready?" he asked his Mother.
"Yes, dear. I'm looking forward to seeing Sam and
Alewka." said Mae.
In an instant they were standing on the sidewalk out front
of Sam and Alewka Henry's in Pinehill.
They walked up to the door and rang the doorbell. The door
opened immediately, to the surprise of Mae. Sam had known
they were coming and had already been on his way to open
the door.
"Hello you two. How are you? Come on in. This is an
unexpected visit. It's good to see you Mae, David. Come on
in." said Sam with his usual enthusiastic hospitality.
"Hello Sam." said Mae.
"Hello Mr. Henry. How are you?" asked David.
"Oh we're all fine David. It is good to see you come, let's
grab a coffee." responded Sam.
"Actually, Sam, we just had one in Philadelphia." said Mae.
"Well come have another one, Mae. Since when are you a
one cup girl?" laughed Sam.
They all walked into the kitchen, sat down and Sam brought
coffee. "Alewka and the boys are out doing some errands.
They'll be back shortly." he said, "What are you two up
to anyway?"
And then, in that instant, Sam knew. The images and words
were impressed upon him as if he had been there. "Oh, I
know. Gee that has to be rough to see. You know better but
there is no way you can get that into his mind, is there? I'm
sorry Mae. Yet you never know, it might have a silver lining
somewhere."
