Why do we "bless" somebody after they sneeze?
Sneezing has long been regarded as a dangerous thing.
The ancient Greeks feared that a sneeze could
accidentally dispel the soul. People tried hard to hold
back their sneezes and one that happened anyway
was greeted with chants to bestow good fortune. The
Romans held an almost opposite view. They felt a
sneeze was the body's attempt to dispel sinister spirits
that could cause illness. Holding BACK a sneeze made
you vulnerable to sickness. Still, benedictions were in
order. A person who sneezed was congratulated and
one about to sneeze was urged on with "Good luck to
you!" The Christian expression "God bless you," was
begun by papal fiat in the sixth century. Pope Gregory
the Great issued the fiat in response to a deadly plague
sweeping through Italy. Sneezing was one of the
symptoms of the plague. Pope Gregory urged healthy
people to pray for the sick and he told them to say "God
bless you" whenever someone sneezed. If a person
sneezed and had no one around to bless him, he was
instructed to call directly on God by saying "God help me!"

WHAT DO YOU MEAN 'I'M ANGRY'?

When you reach your boiling point, what do you do with
the steam? This makes all the difference in your
relationships at home, at work, and, with yourself.
Do you know when you are angry? Many folks don't.
Not only are they not aware they are angry, they are not
aware how they come across to others when they are
angry. This is a big problem… for everyone else. You
would be surprised how few folks actually understand
how they behave or how other folks see them.
Unfortunately, they are not sensitive to their own
attitudes, feelings emotions, and communication style.
Do you have high self-awareness? Do you have an
accurate picture of your behavior, tone of voice, facial
expressions? If you are unsure, sit down with the person
you most trust and ask them to paint an honest picture
for you. Yes, that may be difficult to ask, and to hear.
It must be done, though, if you want to improve your
relationships.
I recently heard a story about a manager whose
employee brought her a requested proposal for a new
office system. After reading the proposal briefly, the
manager went up one side of the employee and down
the other. Using language such as "This is absurd."
"What were you thinking?" "How long have you been
with us?" "You're making me wonder why I ever hired
you." All this was delivered from a standing position
in a loud voice with harsh eye contact. The employee,
completely taken aback and intimidated, went back to
her cubicle furious. Her colleague asked her about the
meeting and she described the reception. Soon, the
story made the rounds of the department.
The next week, the manager met a colleague who said
to her, "Wow! You were really hard on Michelle.
Are you planning on letting her go?"
The manager was stunned. "Why would you ever think
that? She's important to our operation." As they
discussed the incident, the manager realized that she
had no perception of the way she had delivered her
blows to Michelle. She thought she had been simply
responding to the ideas brought to her. No idea of the
effect of her behavior on the employee. This manager
needs to increase her self-awareness.
DO YOUR OWN WORK FIRST
Before you go telling others what they need to improve
within themselves, look in the mirror. What are you
doing? How are you delivering your messages? Is
your communication 'clean'?
Begin with yourself. How do you express your anger?
Do you express your anger or does your steam escape
in inappropriate ways at the wrong people having been
bottled up for too long?
IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS
You likely have heard the old story about the husband
who has been chewed out at work who comes home
and yells at his wife who screams at the kids who kick
the dog. If the husband had good communication and
conflict management skills, he would have handled the
issue at work in the first place, right?
If you feel intimidated, or you avoid conflict at all costs,
you need skills. Take a community college course and
read some books. Seek out good ideas to increase our
self-awareness and your skill set.
Conflict is not a four-letter word. It simply means to have
divergent ideas, needs, drives, wishes or demands.
That's OK but it is how we express those differences
that takes the toll. Learn to express them in ways others
can hear. It will build your self-confidence.
BEGIN SIMPLY
Pay attention to how you think, feel and respond in
different situations. Make a mental picture and rehearse
how you would like to respond. Use your new skill set.
Then, step out into the world.
Listen well when there is conflict. Look beneath the
words to the pain. For example, when someone is angry
with you because a piece of paper is missing, by listening
carefully you may realize what is underneath the anger.
You might then say, "I understand that not finding this
piece of paper right now might make you late for your
meeting and you may look inefficient." That's the pain.
By giving it a name, both you and the other person
deepen the understanding of the situation. When you
get really good at this, you will also deepen your
relationships.
Taking the time to build your self-awareness and your
skill set is well worth the effort. Everyone in your life
will benefit. You will benefit most of all.

COMPUTER TIPS - - -

Windows Me
In Windows Me, to restore your system to a previous
checkpoint you created in System Restore click the 'Start'
button then go to Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and
System Restore.
Now, select the 'Restore My Computer to an earlier time'
and select the name of the checkpoint you created. Your
computer should put itself back to the way it was before.
One word of caution, do not use System Restore unless you
have a true emergency. I recommend using less intrusive
methods to attempt to restore data or the registry before
using System Restore. Use it as a last resort.
System Restore, takes up a tremendous amount of time,
space and computing power in order to maintain the
System Restore functionality. If you are certain that this
is a function that you will not need, you can disable
System Restore by going to the Control Panel, then
Selecting 'System' and choosing the 'Performance' tab
then going to the 'File System'. Now, click on the
'Troubleshooting' tab and checkmark the
'Disable System Restore'.

Salt And Its Hidden Sources.
Like many others, you may find your doctor
suggesting that you "cut out" salt...or "don't
add" any salt...or "reduce" your salt intake. And
how are you supposed to know how much is too
much...How can you tell that you are "getting" too
much. Salt is naturally in many foods and used
indirectly in food preparations. It is also often
used as a preservative. If you don't read labels,
you might be very surprised as to what you will
find...in your ankles or in your chest. How can
you eat out without getting into trouble...These
are very real and normal challenges that you face.
Nobody wants willingly overeat anything,
especially salt.
"Normal" salt diet has a salt intake of 1100 -3300 mg/day
"High" salt diet has a salt intake of 4000 - 6000mg/day
"Low" salt diet has a salt intake of 400 - 1000mg/day
Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of death
in the United States. Reducing the amount of salt
(sodium) may help you reduce or avoid the risk of
high blood pressure. High blood pressure causes
increased pressure on the walls of the arteries,
and over a long period of time, it wears them out.
And people with high blood pressure are more
likely to develop heart disease and stroke. So if
you know how much you need for healthy living, you
can decide to adjust your food intake. This is
your responsibility: not your doctor's.

Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures

"You mean this David? You're David Wiley, aren't you?
The son of Frank Wiley?" asked Darryl.
"Yes sir." David answered calmly.
"How is it you came to be here, Mr. Wiley. How did
you learn this higher law stuff?" asked Darryl.
"I was taught by myself and others Mr. Sparks. At first I
did not believe. I argued and fought against it. I thought
money was the answer. That is what my Father taught
me anyway. When I came back from that long journey
Eloise Henry and I were on I had a lot of money. I soon
found it was not the answer. I got tired of living life in
this money driven competitive world, so I moved my
family down to South America. We live in peace and
comfort there, and it is there my friends helped me
learn." said David.
"Wow! Are you the one working on the statue for our
cenotaph?" asked Darryl.
"I hope so. I have not yet heard from your city fathers,
but Ben has been telling me they are close to a
decision." said David.
"This is news with a local flavor, David, welcome back
to our city. Then Mae is your Mother?" said Darryl,
looking at Mae.
"She is. We came up to visit my brother, a doctor in
Philadelphia." said David.
"Have you heard anything about your Father?"
asked Darryl.
"No, not a thing." responded David in a tone that
let Darryl know there would be no more discussion
on that topic.
"Sam. If you keep doing this there will always be the
sensationalism it evokes." said Darryl.
"No Darryl. The more it is done, the more folks get used to it
and think nothing of it. Do you watch every time they send
up a rocket into space to the moon? You did at one time, but
I bet you now think nothing of it." replied Sam.
"That's true. Maybe we should then do it more often, or at
least report on it more often and then it will lose it's appeal.
What about the people who come around looking for
miracles?" asked Darryl.
"That is sponsored in part, by the sensationalism you report
in the paper. If you keep your articles low key, as if they
were a natural and common occurrence that will not happen
near so much. Oh, we will always get the miracle seekers.
That can't be helped. But it need not be like the last time,
either here or at your paper, remember?" Sam pointed out.
"Yes, I remember. I don't think I ever thanked you, Sam, for
fixing that big plate glass window in our front office.
Thank you." said Darryl.
"You're welcome Darryl. I ask you to remember, in return,
that what you write up today and have in tomorrow's paper
will have a major affect on how the public reacts. Please
keep it low key, as if it were an everyday
occurrence." asked Sam.
"Darryl, that is a requirement. You were granted this
interview exclusively on the basis of trust. Violate that
and you will likely find a lot of things not going right for
you in this town." Ben Striker spoke with the authority
of Police Chief.
"Don't worry, all of you. I know how serious this is. I also
know I am privileged to get these interviews. It will be
treated with the respect it deserves, Chief. You know
that." said Darryl.
The open threat of Ben Striker, may or may not have had
an affect on Darryl Sparks. Ben had much influence in this
town and Darryl knew it. He was a very popular man. It
wouldn't take much of a word from Ben to close a lot of
doors to Darryl.
Darryl knew such threats were not right. He, inside, knew
he should argue and fight against such things. Yet he
was a practical man and knew that if he fought he would
set himself up for much trouble he neither wanted
or needed.
Then a strange and wonderful thing happened. Ben had
been influenced by David, who had sent him a few thoughts.
"Ben, let all men do what they will and let the law reward
them for their actions. That threat is not from a man who
wants to learn higher law."
