Why do trees lose their leaves?
When the days get cooler and shorter, water freezes in
the ground and gets harder to come by. Trees have to drop
their leaves to conserve water and make the little that gets
to their roots go the longest way. The fewer leaves, the less
water the tree needs. During autumn, trees produce a
chemical that causes a corky ring to form at the base of the
leaf's stem. The ring thickens as the days go by and eventually
chokes off the flow of water to the leaf. It dries up and flutters
to the ground.
Whatever happened to the state of Franklin?
Never heard of the state of Franklin? That's because it no
longer exists. Franklin is the United State's "lost state." It
split away from North Carolina in 1784, but soon became
history. Here's Franklin's story: After the Revolutionary War,
the citizens in a region of North Carolina now known as
Upper East Tennessee began to resent their state
government and refused to pay taxes. (It didn't help that
North Carolina had offered the area to the federal
government because it didn't want the responsibility of
protecting it.) Things were so bad the settlers decided to
separate from North Carolina. They did. They named the
new state "Franklin" after Benjamin Franklin, one of
America's founding fathers, and even wrote Ben Franklin
to ask him to move there (he declined, though he was
quite happy to have the state named after him). They
appointed a governor, John Sevier, and settled back to
enjoy their independence from North Carolina. Problems
soon erupted, however. The leaders in Franklin weren't
interested in joining the other former British colonies in
forming a union. They thought they might form an
independent nation instead and even discussed the
prospect of getting financial aid from Spain. Things were
tense during this period and the situation was not helped
by the fact that North Carolina had repealed the act ceding
the lands. For awhile, the region operated under TWO
governments - the State of Franklin and the State of
North Carolina. The end of Franklin is a little murky,
since few records remain. The state was unable to
secure congressional recognition and was further
harassed by North Carolina in its attempt to reestablish
jurisdiction. Sevier's government passed out of existence
when the terms of its officers expired. The region reverted
temporarily to North Carolina. Eventually, what once was
Franklin became the state of Tennessee and Franklin
governor John Sevier became the first governor of
Tennessee.
What unusual provision almost made it into Franklin's
constitution?
When the convention met in 1784 to form the new state
of Franklin, the proposed constitution provided that lawyers,
doctors, and preachers could never be members of the
legislature. The people rejected it and instead adopted
the constitution of North Carolina (with a few changes).

How to Stay Sane Working at Home

It's great working at home, being your
own boss, but for some people it?s not
what they expected.
I've heard several people say they get
lonely and miss being around work
associates; others find it hard to stay
disciplined, or they just find working
at home boring. I personally don?t find
it to be any of those things myself and
love working at home, but everybody?s
different.
Some people are almost forced to work at
home, such as disabled people, single moms
that can't afford daycare, or don't want
to put their children in daycare. For
these people that didn't necessarily choose
a home career it can be quite depressing.
For those that chose to work at home, and
don't want to change that part of it, often
times another problem arises. It can be
called, ?wearing all the hats syndrome?.
Not only do you run a business and play
manager, employee, billing clerk, sales
person, inventory manager, etc., with a home
business, you might find yourself cleaning the
house, taking care of the kids, cooking meals,
folding clothes, running errands, and paying
bills, all during working hours. This problem
tends to arise when there is no set work
routine. It leaves one feeling overwhelmed
on a daily basis.
To really enjoy a home business and keep
yourself sane, it?s necessary to establish
business hours and a routine.
It's best to get dressed every day at a
reasonable hour, otherwise you find the
whole day is gone and you're still in your
night clothes. It?s great to be able to
do that, it's just not good to do it.
You can bet the doorbell will ring on the
days you slack off on this one!
Give yourself a lunch break and try to
eat healthy. It?s so easy working from
home to walk by the fridge every thirty
minutes and get a snack. Soon your body
expects to be fed every couple of hours,
just like a newborn. Not a good thing,
especially when you start packing on the
pounds.
Try to get some fresh air every single day.
It?s not good to get out of the house only
once or twice a week. When you feel mentally
happy and healthy, you will be able to stay
sane with a home business.
Remember, working at home can be harder than
working outside the home. It's all up to you
how your business turns out; it?s a lot of
responsibility. So, try not to stress yourself
unnecessarily.
Use phone time wisely. Enough said?
As far as housework goes, and all that other
stuff that messes up your work day, I found
something that works and may work for you.
I get up and get showered and dressed and
then I spend about an hour cleaning the house.
I'm usually ready to sit down and start work
around nine, but if it's ten o?clock that's fine
too. Routine, routine, routine, is the key to
being successful and staying sane in a home
business.

The Make Up Of Your Body And
How It Functions
PART 4 of 9
Your body's very basic unit is the cell and every cell has a
purpose or a function. The definition of a cell is "the
fundamental unit of all living tissue". For our purpose of
general explanation, each cell has a nucleus (the leader)
cytoplasm, in which the nucleus lives and a cell wall. There are
many other types of cells, but this one definition works for us.
So every part of your body is a cell. Nothing that is in you is
NOT a cell of some type. And these cells perform different
activities. Similar cells arrange themselves in groups and are
then called tissue. And tissue is described as a collection of
similar cells acting together to perform a particular function.
Nerve cells carry messages to the brain. Connective tissue holds
different parts together. Muscle tissue creates all sorts of
padding, and epithelial tissue holds your body in a nice shape
via your skin. Of course, there are many more combinations.
One kidney cell is pretty ineffective, but millions of them can
keep you alive. Same for brain cells. All this similar tissue
together is now called an organ (a very important member of
society is an organ donor. The generosity of such a gift will
change the course of another's life.) And in grouping these
organs together, you now have systems. In essence, you are one
tiny cell many times multiplied into ten systems.
We won't get too technical but just know that each of us has
these cells and that's the anatomy of the body.the make up of
the structures. An analogy is that we are all people of
different colours and races, but underneath we are all the same.
Same structures. Same organs. Same tissue. Same systems. Same
brain cells. But we seek out relationships that make us
comfortable: where we feel accepted. The same happens with the
organs and their tissue. All organs that deal with feeding or
elimination of waste production are grouped into the
Gastrointestinal or Digestive system. Anything to do with the
blood or the heart is combined and called the Cardiovascular
system. The eight other systems are Urinary, Respiratory,
Muscular, Skeletal, (often linked together as Musculoskeletal)
Endocrine, Integumentary, Nervous, and Reproductive. So from a
single cell, we have now established a living person.
