The Greatest Motivator Isn't What You Think
or, What I Learned From Drew Barrymore
and Adam Sandler on Valentine's Day

It's Valentine's Day as I write this. Nerissa and I
just returned from watching the new movie, "50 First
Dates," starting the beautiful Drew Barrymore and the
funny Adam Sandler. Besides being a hilarious movie in
a beautiful setting with a heartfelt message of true
love, it also caused me to have an "a-ha" right in the
middle of it.
Somewhere around half way through the movie, as
Adam is again reminding short-term memory loss victim
Drew that he loves her, I suddenly realized the power
of the greatest motivator of all time.
But let me first set the stage.
Most psychologists, direct marketers, and anyone
who persuades for a living will tell you there are only
two basic motivators: Pain or Pleasure. You either go
toward what you want or away from what you don't want.
The standard argument is that pain is more
powerful. I've tended to agree, but also stated I would
not focus on pain for idealistic reasons. I simply
don't want to spread pain in the world. Focusing on it
causes you to feel it. I don't want to contribute to
the misery many feel. So my stance has been to focus on
pleasure as a motivator in my sales letters and
websites.
Most marketing experts agree that pain is the
best trigger to focus on in any ad or sales campaign.
They love to find a prospect's basic problem, and then
rub their noses in it. They figure the pain would make
the person buy or change.
The most common example they give is the insurance
salesman who tries to sell you home coverage. If he
focuses on pleasure, you will put off buying. If he
tells you your house is on fire, you will buy. Pain
causes immediate action.
So, like everyone else, I "knew" pain was the
greater motivator. I simply focused on pleasure because
it is a more noble route.
But then I saw Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler in
their new movie and suddenly I felt awakened,
energized, and validated.
Here's the film's plot in a nutshell:
Adam is in love with a woman who can't remember
anything from the day before, due to a head injury in
an auto accident the year before. Every day is a new
day. And every day Adam has to win her over again.
Every date is new. Hence the title, "50 First Dates."
At one point in it, as Adam was again wooing Drew,
I suddenly realized what I was really seeing.
I saw pleasure was the greatest motivator of all.
Adam was pursuing Drew every day, despite the pain
and the odds, because of his growing love for her. He
was going after pleasure. The pleasure goal was so
powerful it erased every pain he might experience.
In short, all the marketing experts who say pain is
the greatest motivator have forgotten the power of our
driving force in life: Love.
People will scale mountains with luggage on their
backs, swim upstream in a hurricane, and battle armies
and all odds in order to fulfill that hard-wired
emotion in us to love and be loved. Love rules.
All the examples we were given were unfair. Someone
trying to sell insurance and resorting to pain hasn't
figured out the real pleasure button to make someone
buy. They've been too lazy to search for the pleasure
trigger. Focusing on pain was simply an easy cop-out,
a handy approach.
It's the same with all the massive ad campaigns
that fail. Trying to get someone to quit smoking or
stop drugs because of the pain they depict in the ad is
the wrong approach. If we suddenly focused on the
pleasure someone would have when they stopped
smoking or taking drugs, we'd be moving in the right
direction.
This is so obvious to me after watching the movie.
Our goal as marketing and business people isn't to tell
people what's wrong with them or to remind them of
their pain, but to help them imagine and then
experience the pleasure they long to have.
It's noble, yes, *and* it works.
Love moves everyone.
Love is the great motivator.
Love is the great pleasure trigger.
According to my friend Kevin Hogan, author of "The
Psychology of Persuasion," love isn't an emotion but a
mindset. And as a mindset, it is actually stronger than
any emotion.
In short, you're dealing with the most powerful
motivator of all time.
Reveal what there is to love about your product or
service and you'll give people authentic reasons to do
business with you. Call it Love-Based Marketing. You
won't sell everyone with it. You'll sell only those who
are a match for your offer. That, in the end, is all
you want. Then you're happy and so are your customers.
Just like Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler, you'll
find a match to write home about.
And you might make a little money along the way,
to boot.

The Make Up Of Your Body And
How It Functions
PART 6 of 9
Let's review the definition of anatomy and physiology
and then use the heart as an example.
ANATOMY is the study, classification, and description of
structures and organs of the body. I think that's pretty well
explained.cell to tissue to organ to system to body.
PHYSIOLOGY is the study and process of the function
of the human. It is the study of the physical and
chemical processes involved in the functioning of the
living organisms and their component parts.
We know that the heart is a huge muscle, as is your
biceps muscle in your upper arm. Same tissue, but
their FUNCTIONS are VERY different! Let's suppose
you are to cut out 3/4 of your biceps muscle because
it was diseased and becoming necrotic (dying tissue).
You would have a big hollow in your arm, but life
would continue. Do the same 3/4 "reduction" in your
heart (organ) and life COULD not continue! So
function of any cell and its larger part, is vitally
important. And of course each organ has its own
specific, specialized and non-duplicable function.
Obviously with ten different systems working
simultaneously in your body, there is a lot of activity.
And most of it done without any knowledge or help
on your part. Your heart beats. Your lungs expand
and contract automatically. They exchange blood
with oxygen for blood without oxygen. Your kidneys
are constantly filtering. Your digestive tract is
handling input and output of nutrients. Your skin is
protecting you and holding you together. Your bones
are holding you upright and your brain is
computing millions of messages. You are a living
miracle! And
this list isn't anywhere near complete!
Nothing so far has been said about maintaining
this perfect "machine". It does require maintenance.
Nothing runs forever. Systems break down by lack
of one or more deficits. The basic cell can be
impaired by a number of factors. In a very
simplistic way, any food that the cell can't use or
is harmful hinders its health maintenance. All
systems are required to work in harmony and
efficiency. It is called dis-ease. Your body has
supplied the cells, and the systems and the
functions. It's up to you to supply the
maintenance factors.

in front of you, and "know" it to be there you cause an
underpinning to be there to which is drawn the matter you
see. And you have your cup of coffee. It is nothing more
and nothing less than this. However, if you do not know this
you then believe it is all garbage and you don't pursue it.
Therefore it does not work for you. That is why you must be
careful what thoughts you permit yourself to believe. That
is also why you must never think anything but love toward
your fellow man in all circumstances, without fail. For, now,
all things that you think in your mind will come to pass
immediately." said Sam.
"You mean I could have been doing this since
childhood?" asked Ben.
"Certainly, Ben. All men can do this. This is true dominion
over all things. The use of guns, the findings of science
only give the illusion that man is master of his universe.
All it will take, Ben, is one little 'superbug' to attack man
in epidemic proportions and man will learn how much he
has dominion over all things. It is only man's arrogance
and ignorance that keeps him for seeing truth. That is
what happened to you, to me, to all people." answered
Sam.
"My God! You mean we run around like foolish little ants,
thinking that what we do is important? It is as if we are all
living a dream from which only death releases us. And
absolutely nothing in any of our lives is significant." said Ben.
"That's not exactly true, Ben. We all lived with our Maker,
in the Garden of Eden. Because we began to think greedy
thoughts, that is what the apple represents, greed, then we
were cast from the Garden to experience the world we
appeared to want. Today we have come not very far along
the path back to the Garden, yet there have been men and
women who have shown us the way to the next step. As we
become more 'giving' in our hearts we become closer to
the Garden. Those who learn to go inside and seek their
Maker are the ones who are the closest. Those who act
upon the knowledge and wisdom they find there, are
Masters. The have found the Garden, and their work is to
aid others involved in the same pursuit. These have
overcome death, these Masters. That is what you are now
learning. Each life is on a mission, whether men recognize
it or not, and that mission is to learn, at the deep spiritual
level, what it takes to get back to the Garden. Some learn
quickly. Others will take many lifetimes." said Sam.
"So what you are saying is what we know as the Parable
of the Sower? That there is knowledge, wisdom and signs
all over. That only the 'seeds' that fall on fertile ground are
the ones that grow. If any man hear this and act upon it, he
will find the kingdom of his Maker. If men hear it and think it
a good idea until something else comes along, they will not
find it and will need another lifetime. And those that dismiss
it with a scoff are the ones who will endure much pain until
they see and learn. Is that what you are telling me,
Sam?" asked Ben.
"Yes, Ben. That's it. You are one of the few who has
chosen to dedicate your life to learning higher law. You
have actually accomplished. I witnessed it last night. It
remains only for you to grasp the full significance of what
higher law is, and you will be a Master." said Sam.
"All that I learned from walking on water?" asked Ben.
"That was only a catalyst, Ben, a starter. What you really
learned was not to walk on water, but that through the
correct use of your mind you can not only walk on water
but you can do all your Maker wants for you to do. Walking
on water is merely symbolic to you now. What is important
is that you have learned to use your mind the way your
Maker wants. All we need do now is to show you how to do
other things and you will be done. We won't do much along
those lines today, but what I want to talk about is the law,
'As ye sow, so shall ye reap.'" said Sam.
"You said that last night. I clearly do not fully understand
the depth of meaning you want me to know." said Ben.
"I will repeat myself Ben. We both know what happens in the
outside world when you touch a hot stove. We both know
what happens in relationships when we become angry. We
can both see, easily, how the law affects our external
environment. What I want you to know is that from now on
you must not attach emotions to what you see or do. Look
at things in a detached way to see what they really are. Do
not experience fear, because of old training. Just look at it,
and at the circumstances that created it, and calmly, love all
around you. Fear promotes unthinking action which can
come back to hurt you in a very large way. Most all the
human emotions have that tendency, Ben. Greed, avarice
and deceit will now cause you immediate harm. Your
thoughts must always be pure toward all things. It is time to
start that habit, and practice it always, that soon you will not
have to think about it. Then your use of higher law will thrive
and prosper." said Sam.
