ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What is the difference between a pig and a hog?
It's either a matter of pounds or age. Readers will need to help
with this one, because I've come across two equally compelling
explanations for this. According to one -- in the US, swine
weighing under 180 pounds are considered pigs. Over 180
pounds, they're hogs. The other explanation: Under three months
of age -- it's a pig. Over three months -- a hog. One thing's agreed
on: in Canada and Great Britain, there is no difference. No matter
the age OR weight, it's a pig.
Why do pigs like to wallow in mud?
It's not because they're dirty animals or like being dirty. Pigs
don't perspire and wallowing in mud helps to cool them off.

Turn Your Speech Into A Leadership Talk
by Brent Filson
My experience working with thousands of leaders world
wide for the past two decades teaches me that most
leaders are screwing up their careers.
On a daily basis, these leaders are getting the wrong
results or the right results in the wrong ways.
Interestingly, they themselves are choosing to fail.
They're actively sabotaging their own careers.
Leaders commit this sabotage for a simple reason: They
make the fatal mistake of choosing to communicate with
presentations and speeches -- not leadership talks.
In terms of boosting one's career, the difference
between the two methods of leadership communication is
the difference between lightning and the lightning bug.
Speeches/presentations primarily communicate
information. Leadership talks, on the other hand, not
only communicate information, they do more: They
establish a deep, human emotional connection with the
audience.
Why is the latter connection necessary in leadership?
Look at it this way: Leaders do nothing more important
than get results. There are generally two ways that
leaders get results: They can order people to go from
point A to point B; or they can have people WANT TO go
from A to B.
Clearly, leaders who can instill "want to" in people,
who motivate those people, are much more effective than
leaders who can't or won't.
And the best way to instill "want to" is not simply to
relate to people as if they are information receptacles
but to relate to them on a deep, human, emotional way.
And you do it with leadership talks.
Here are a few examples of leadership talks.
When Churchill said, "We will fight on the beaches ...
" That was a leadership talk.
When Kennedy said, "Ask not what your country can do
for you ... " that was a leadership talk.
When Reagan said, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
That was a leadership talk.
You can come up with a lot of examples too. Go back to
those moments when the words of a leader inspired
people to take ardent action, and you've probably put
your finger on an authentic leadership talk.
Mind you, I'm not just talking about great leaders of
history. I'm also talking about the leaders in your
organizations. After all, leaders speak 15 to 20 times
a day: everything from formal speeches to informal
chats. When those interactions are leadership talks,
not just speeches or presentations, the effectiveness
of those leaders is dramatically increased.
How do we put together leadership talks? It's not easy.
Mastering leadership talks takes a rigorous application
of many specific processes. As Clement Atlee said of
that great master of leadership talks, Winston
Churchill, "Winston spent the best years of his life
preparing his impromptu talks."
Churchill, Kennedy, Reagan and others who were masters
at giving leadership talks didn't actually call their
communications "leadership talks", but they must have
been conscious to some degree of the processes one must
employ in putting a leadership talk together.
Here's how to start. If you plan to give a leadership
talk, there are three questions you should ask. If you
answer "no" to any one of those questions, you can't
give one. You may be able to give a speech or
presentation, but certainly not a leadership talk.
(1) DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE AUDIENCE NEEDS?
Winston Churchill said, "We must face the facts or
they'll stab us in the back."
When you are trying to motivate people, the real facts
are THEIR facts, their reality.
Their reality is composed of their needs. In many
cases, their needs have nothing to do with your needs.
Most leaders don't get this. They think that their own
needs, their organization's needs, are reality. That's
okay if you're into ordering. As an order leader, you
only need work with your reality. You simply have to
tell people to get the job done. You don't have to
know where they're coming from. But if you want to
motivate them, you must work within their reality, not
yours.
I call it "playing the game in the people's home park".
There is no other way to motivate them consistently.
If you insist on playing the game in your park, you'll
be disappointed in the motivational outcome.
(2) CAN YOU BRING DEEP BELIEF TO WHAT YOU'RE SAYING?
Nobody wants to follow a leader who doesn't believe the
job can get done. If you can't feel it, they won't do
it.
But though you yourself must "want to" when it comes to
the challenge you face, your motivation isn't the
point. It's simply a given. If you're not motivated,
you shouldn't be leading.
Here's the point: Can you TRANSFER your motivation to
the people so they become as motivated as you are?
I call it THE MOTIVATIONAL TRANSFER, and it is one of
the least understood and most important leadership
determinants of all.
There are three ways you can make the transfer happen.
* CONVEY INFORMATION. Often, this is enough to get
people motivated. For instance, many people have quit
smoking because of information on the harmful effects
of the habit
* MAKE SENSE. To be motivated, people must understand
the rationality behind your challenge. Re: smoking:
People have been motivated to quit because the
information makes sense.
* TRANSMIT EXPERIENCE. This entails having the
leader's experience become the people's experience.
This can be the most effective method of all, for when
the speaker's experience becomes the audience's
experience, a deep sharing of emotions and ideas, a
communing, can take place.
(The conclusion will be in Thursdays PEBBLE)

Head Aches Or Headaches...Why?
PART 3 of 7
We think in terms of headaches, but in reality, we mean
something is hurting our brain. If you meant any other
parts of the head, you would mention it by its correct
name. An earache, a toothache, a sinus or nose problem,
dizziness, deafness. Here we are dealing the brain: the
major structure of the head, and how it can ache.
While anatomy describes the different parts of the
brain, physiology describes the functions and
interactions of those anatomical structures. You simply
cant talk about one without recognizing the total
interaction or interdependence of the other. It
function as all other parts of your body. It takes in
food, oxygen, water, and other components and has to
get rid of waste products. Please realize that this is
an extremely simplistic explanation, but it serves our
needs right here.
Each body part has special tissue to help it do what it
is supposed to do. (Liver, spleen, bones, heart, etc.)
But you dont have to do anything special in order for
that them to do their jobs. All you have to do is to
provide the required nutrients, oxygen, water, and a
way of getting rid of waste products. In terms of
nutrients, you need to provide macro-nutrients such as
carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. You also need
micronutrients such as vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and
other co-factors. The body also needs oxygen to
maintain a normal health cycle. The body cannot live
without water, but it will be discussed a little
further along.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

The winds were still blowing their best
outside the building and could easily be heard
within. Snow was becoming banked up against it as
the drifts blew and shifted like sand in the dunes
of a desert.
The owner of this place had come down a little
from his surprise and shock. He came over to the
table and grabbed a chair from a nearby table. He
turned it around so that he sat on it backwards,
leaning on the back of the chair with his
forearms. He began to speak to them, using as his
introduction a question about the meal.
Mae and Susan carried on conversation with
him for quite a while. They told him of where
their home was, about their journey. They spoke of
the storm outside and how glad they were to be
inside.
The man looked them over, thoroughly. He could
see no sign of clothing he would expect for anyone
to survive in a storm like the one raging now. The
question was in his eyes and mind. The girls knew
it.
Mae attempted to explain they lived by higher
law and were able to control the elements. It was
neither cold nor windy for them.
The owner did not believe them, not so much
because he thought they were lying but because he
had never heard of such a thing. Mae brought the
light up within the building. He stopped, looked
around and became a bit nervous as he queried
where the light had come from.
The two girls showed him they could make the
light come or go. This was even more unsettling.
Susan manifested two large containers of oil
right on the table, and asked if that was enough
payment for the meal. She well knew it was nearly
100 times what he would ordinarily get. The owner
just nodded.
He was perplexed. Where had that oil come
from? It had just appeared on the table, from
nowhere. He had not seen the two women reach
anywhere to get it. It was just suddenly there on
the table. He took the oil and bowed, fervently
thanking the ladies for their generosity. He took
the containers of oil to the back room.
Mae and Susan could hear shuffling coming from
the room. Soon the owner brought out his wife and
two children, one of which was the little boy who
had served them. The owner introduced the family.
He was Long Chu, his wife was Ming Lu, his oldest,
a girl of about eight was Ming Stze and the boy,
about six, was called Long Stze.
It was clear the family was nervous. Mae and
Susan broadcast love and concentrated it upon
them. Soon they relaxed a little and began to
talk.
Mae complimented them on the meal, which they
had not yet completed. They all bowed as a
courtesy. None of them had seen white women
before, and certainly thought it odd the women had
been traveling alone. Ming Lu thanked them for the
oil several times over. These folks worked hard to
eek out a living in this land. Anything extra was
treasured as a true gift.
"That oil will never run out. The more you use
the more will be replaced. You will never see the
bottom of the container. It will always be filled
with oil. It is a never ending supply." Mae had
been impressed with the family and had wanted to
help make life just a bit easier for them.
"What you mean?" Ming Lu asked, "That not
possible."
"Yes, Ming Lu, it is possible. You will not
see for a while but the next time you fill your
lamps you will notice the container of oil will
still be full. It will be that way forever."
Ming Lu, believing, dropped to her knees
immediately, kissing the feet of both Mae and
Susan.
Mae reached down. "Ming Lu, please, you don't
have to do that. You have served us a wonderful
meal. You have made us welcome. It is our pleasure
to see you have that oil." Upon Mae's touching
Ming Lu to lift her back up again, her old and
ragged clothes instantly became new and warm. The
kids, too, instantly had new clothes as did Long
Chu.
They all marveled. This was now getting scary.
"Long Chu, this building will always be a
comfortable temperature inside. When it is cold
out the building will be warm. When it is warm out
the building will be just cool enough to be
comfortable. If possible, we would like to stay
the night, or until the storm abates. Would that
be possible?"
"We have no rooms, no beds" replied Long Chu.
"We need none. We will be fine. If you don't
mind we will simply lay mats over there in the
corner after you close the shop for the evening.
Long Chu and Ming Lu consulted with one
another.
"That would be okay." Ming Lu spoke.
