The sketch that Jack drew of Rose wearing the famous

Know When To Hold, Know When To Fold
Success in your career usually means having the abilities of a
gymnast--flexibility, strength, focus and skill, heightened by
resilience, perseverance, determination and practice. The
ability to accommodate change often requires all these things
as well.
John Sculley, formerly of Apple computer, said: "The new
corporate contract is that we'll offer you an opportunity to
express yourself and grow, if you promise to leash yourself to
our dream, at least for a while." For those of you who work
in the corporate world, mission statements and strategic
planning involve all pulling together to realize a corporate
vision, don't they? What we are learning now, is that,
important as this is to creating economic viability, it is
also important to honor the individual in the company by
aligning his or her personal goals and vision, with that of
the company, "at least for a while".
As companies are comprised of people--they would not exist
without them, would they?--enlightened companies are caring
companies and they demonstrate their valuing of their
employees by giving them skills, input, and, the opportunity
to realize their goals within the company. Unfortunately,
there are still the unenlightened companies who fit the mould
described by David Whyte in The Heart Aroused: "The hard news
is that the corporate world wants us around while we are
useful, but it offers no security based on how likable or
impassioned we are...individuals...are continually forced to
reassess their abilities to live with unknown and open-ended
situations, to actively create their own life independent of
the organization and to like themselves while they are doing
it. " Very good advice, no matter how enlightened your
company is!!
So, with that in mind, how is your gymnastic ability? How is
the balance you create between your personal goals and your
career goals? What is your plan for maintaining that balance?
Do you actively create your own life independent of the
organization? Do you like yourself at work? How far are you
willing to stretch before it becomes uncomfortable? Where are
your boundaries and limits? Do you know what you value and
how important it is to you? How comfortable are you with
risk? Do you know your limits of tolerance for change,
stress, rigidity, ambiguity, and uncertainty? Do you
understand the depth of your desire for a life that matches
your values? Are you willing to do whatever it takes to
achieve this?
Taking the time to reflect on these things has much value. It
prepares you to assess situations as they arise and create
solutions that honor what is valuable to you. You also will
be prepared to respond with more assurance and immediacy to
those situations. I've heard it said that luck is when
preparation meets opportunity. When you know yourself well,
you are prepared to know when to hold and to know when to
fold, to keep your life well-balanced and in alignment with
what you value. Then you will recognize opportunity when it
presents itself, too.

Your Immune System: Delicate Yet Critical
How It Serves You And Why You Need To Keep It Healthy
Why a carrot is good and a chocolate bar is not...
PART 4 of 9
Let's see how they could be put to practical use in your body
and in your life through examples. As you have just read, the
Immune System is a series of protective mechanisms or systems
found naturally in your body. This protection is both internal
and external. It provides protection to the entire body, with
many "subsections". These protect you regionally (limb) and
locally (finger). Immune System keeps internal
(pathogens/disease-causing) and external (foreign bodies)
invaders from affecting your everyday life. (For ease of our
discussion, these invaders are called "free radicals".)
We will use the term Immune System "generally" to describe all
the protective systems of the body. This system is made up of a
variety of defense mechanisms including antibodies, which have
very specific functions. We also don't often think in terms of
the skin and digestive tract (mucous membranes, saliva, stomach
juices) spleen, etc.,) being connected to this, but they also
play very important roles. An example of the defense mechanism
with "local parts" is the inflammatory system or response. This
is one of the MOST important defenses you can have. Guard it
carefully. Here is a very simplistic explanation of the
"inflammatory process". You step on a nail. Immediately the body
recognizes this as an abnormal "invasion" and sends out the
inflammatory process to get rid of the invader(s). In this case,
it would be an increase of fluid, including large amounts of
white blood cells. This fluid will remain there until the
healing is complete or until some other process (antibiotics)
takes over. Then it stays to counteract the antibiotics
(drugs/chemicals). The volume of this fluid causes its own
problems as the pressure causes pain and distortion of the
area's anatomy. And when this process is also active in places
like the ear, brain, or eye, because of limited space, it will
cause additional problems. Its purpose is to wash the toxins out
of the area.
There is the body-wide response in the form of the lymphatic
system. As well, the immune system has many organs that will
either protect or not accept free radicals or intruders. Your
sinuses will protect you by filtering out certain chemicals.
Your stomach will "return" unwanted items. Your eyelids will
block out unwanted light. Your nose will make you aware of
undesirable smells and you can cover your nose or turn away.
Knowing we have such powerful protection available to us, it
scares me when someone calls and tells me that certain very
invasive procedures are to be done. On further questioning, it's
obvious that the symptoms are very uncomfortable or
debilitating. And that's fine, but WHY are those symptoms there?
What is your body trying to protect you FROM? From what you have
already read, wouldn't you now be asking a different question?

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"Juanita! I think you are forgetting the law."
Romano spoke calmly and quietly. He and Oomano
were having trouble with Juanita. Ever since she
came to stay with them, after leaving the gang,
she was like a fish out of water.
She was living in an environment of love and
kindness. This was strange to her. She was used to
being treated roughly, being used sexually, and
generally mistreated. Here there was none of that.
She did not know how to react. It had been months
now since anyone paid any attention to her
sexually and she was nearly out of her mind. It
was not that she was behaving as if she were in
heat, it was just that no one paid that kind of
attention to her. It made her think she was no
longer wanted.
The cause that precipitated this particular
conversation was that she had come on to Romano.
Oomano had gone over to see her folks, leaving
little Marietta at home with Romano. Both she and
Romano knew that one day there was going to be
some kind of confrontation with Juanita. They were
preparing the way for that to happen. That is why
Oomano had gone over to Miguele's and Abetta's
alone.
Juanita loved Marietta. She played with the
little girl almost as if she were a little doll.
She was always dressing her up and playing house
with her. It was almost as if Juanita had reverted
to being a little child. Marietta, of course,
loved all the attention.
Yet there was an aching in Juanita's heart,
and a blood coursing temptation flowing in her
veins. She found it almost impossible to control.
This day she didn't.
She had dressed in a thin cotton dress, under
which she wore nothing. After Marietta had gone
for a nap she had gone out into the yard to see
Romano. He was kneeling down, fiddling with some
leaves and branches on a small bush. She came up
behind him and put her arms around him, giving him
a full body hug and ensuring he could feel not
only her breasts, but her groin too.
"My you seem loving today. Are you okay?"
"Oh I'm fine. Do you want to see?"
He knew immediately what she meant. "No, I
think that is not for you and I"
They both stood up and were on their way back
into the house. The instant they were inside she
ripped off her dress and stood before him naked.
Romano looked at her but kept on going to get
himself a beverage. "Juanita you and I can't do
this. You know that. You best put your dress back
on. Would you like a drink?"
In that second she was all over him. She made
him feel up her breasts. She ground her groin into
him, but she was getting no response. She could
not understand this. Any other man would have
taken her on the spot, or so she thought.
Romano pushed her away. "Juanita! I think you
are forgetting the law."
"Damned with the law. I love you. I want you.
And you want me, I can tell."
"Juanita, you are a very attractive woman and
yes I do want you. Most men would. However, I am
married to a wonderful woman and I will never do
anything to hurt her. You know, of course, it
would be impossible to hide such an act from her,
and I do not lie."
"But I want you so bad."
"Juanita, go put your dress on. I am not going
to touch you and you know it."
With that she became angry, right down to her
core. She stormed over to pick up her dress. On
the way she picked up a chair by the table and
threw it at him. Romano handled that all right.
Next she picked up a cookie jar on the kitchen
counter and threw it through the window taking the
curtains with it. She walked in the direction of
her room and picked up the andiron tools near the
fireplace. She threw each one separately at
Romano. He caught them, except for the last one
which she had clearly thrown at the cupboards. It
hit so hard it punctured the cupboard door.
She then walked into her room and slammed the
door so hard it broke the door jamb. Then there
was quiet. She was terribly angry deep inside. Not
only would he not have her but she humiliated
herself in front of him. She would never forget
this and she thought he would not either.
Juanita knew no other way to live. She was
having a difficult time trying to learn higher
law, or even how to live differently than being in
the gang. She knew no other way. Her frustration
was so deep seated it gnawed at her insides every
day. This was only the present culmination of a
long period of despair. She no longer knew what to
do. She was at her wits end. She saw no point to
living any longer.
She paced back and forth in her room,
brooding. She had still not put her dress on. She
was desperate. Finally she picked up a knife. It
was a sharp knife used by hunters and sportsmen
when they were in the bush. Placing the knife on
her left wrist she cut, deep and heavy. Quickly
she changed hands and with her left hand
did the same to the right wrist.
She just stood there watching the blood drip
onto the rug.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
HA! HA! HA!
I had given our daughter, who was 15 at the time, a
drivers manual. On the way to town one day, I was
coaching her as I drove. I told her to be studying her
book so as to be ready when it came time to get her
driver's permit.
"Oh, she said, "I already know everything in the book."
"You do?" I returned.
"Yep", she said, very smugly.
I thought, "OK, I'll give her a hard one." So I asked her,
"How many feet does it take to stop the car if you are
driving 60 miles an hour and have to slam on the
brakes real hard?"
"One," she replied.
"What?" I asked. "One?!"
She repeated her answer and then because of the
confused look on my face, she added, "One, Mom.
You always told me never to use my left foot on
the brakes, only use my right one."
