TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

Who was the first woman to be commemorated on a US postage
stamp?

How closely related are cows and humans?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What exactly does the Equal Rights Amendment say?

There is a lot of controversy about this one. Many people
assume the ERA promises women special rights. In fact, the
amendment, as penned in 1923 by Alice Paul, founder of the
National Woman's Party, is simple. It states, in language
modeled on the Nineteenth Amendment: "Men and women shall
have equal rights throughout the United States and every
place subject to its jurisdiction. Congress shall have the
power to enforce this article through appropriate
legislation." The amendment changed only slightly before it
was introduced in its final form before Congress in December
1923.

Has the Equal Rights Amendment ever been passed?

Passed, yes. Ratified, no. After intensive lobbying by
women's rights advocates in 1972, both the Senate and the
House of Representatives finally passed the amendment. The
vote in the House was 354 to 23, and in the Senate 84 to 8.
However, the legislation as passed included a limitation on
the amount of time that congress would permit for the
requisite number of states to ratify the amendment. In the
first year after the vote, 28 of the 38 states necessary had
ratified the ERA. But then opponents of the amendment, led
by conservative Phyllis Schlafly, began an opposition
campaign that focused on such things as the draft (women
would be drafted just like men, Schlafly claimed, and would
have to leave their families behind) and the supposed
destruction of the family. With only three states to go, the
ratification time limit ended and the ERA was never fully
ratified.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------

My, How We Assume Things!

An overweight blonde consulted her doctor for advice.
The doctor advised that she run 10 miles a day for
30 days. This, he promised, would help her lose as
much as twenty pounds.

The blonde follows the doctor's advice, and, after
thirty days, she was pleased to find that she'd indeed
lost twenty pounds.

She phoned the doctor and thanked him for the
wonderful advice which produced such effective
results. At the end of the conversation, however, she
asked one last question:

"How do I get home, since I am now 300 miles away?"

I'm sure the doctor in the joke above assumed his patient
had sense enough to run five miles out and five miles back.
Who in their right mind would do otherwise, right?

Yet this little joke points out a human condition that often
gets us into trouble. It shows how we, like the doctor,
make assumptions that may not be correct.

So often we get to where we want something so bad we
picture that in our minds and, before we know it we
assume it will happen. That might ultimately be the
condition we want, but we want to KNOW, not assume.

It is good to look into things to find why things work. Once
having done that your assumptions will either be based
on knowledge or you will avoid making the assumption.
It's worth thinking about.

How many times have your assumptions left you hanging
high and dry? How many times have your assumptions
failed you.

It is particularly important in your communications.
Whether the spoken word or in writing, you can ill afford
to assume the listener or the reader thinks like you do.
You must not make assumptions here. You must be clear.

Having taught graphics courses at several technical
schools and universities I learned early that those who
were in class came from assorted backgrounds and with
different levels of knowledge. It was always a good idea
to begin the lessons with the basics. That way everyone
in the class started on the same plateau and progressed
well.

If the communication was above their heads, but, of
course, well understood by you, then the only result
will be that you lose your listener. You don't make
sales that way.

Keep your assumptions out of the picture. Always
communicate at the lowest common denominator level.
Only step up your communication when you are
abundantly certain your listening or reading audience
will understand. Otherwise, keep it simple.

Never lose sight of your objective. What is the reason
for your communicating in the first place? Always pursue
your communication to this end. Never make assumptions
that you will get what you are after until it actually
materializes. Making assumptions will usually get the
mission lost, no results, or results you would have
avoided had you based your assumption on knowledge.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity

This dental article by Dr. McGuire was published in
thePebble last year. I think it is very appropriate to run
it again and the sooner the better. I work with many, many
people who do not look beyond a prescription drug for any
symptoms of discomfort. And, more alarmingly, they are put
on preventative medications.."just in case". I often ask why
they don't question any of this "remedy" if they don't even
have ANY symptoms. Their answer is that no one tells them
that anything can be done: a drug is their best option. I
beg to differ..and have been preaching a different
"possibility" for five years to people with Meniere's
symptoms. In case you have not heard of this condition,
these symptoms include dizziness, vertigo, hearing
fluctuations and tinnitus. As you can imagine, they are not
pleasant to live with. So any help is always appreciated.
But there is little that is offered in "traditional"
medicine that really helps. The most common phrase I hear is
that people are told to live with it. Wonderful! That is
definitely not helpful or encouraging.

Chances are you do not have Meniere's symptoms. I hope
not. BUT by reading this information from Dr. McGuire, at
least now you have substantial scientific evidence that
there could be underlying causes for you for whatever
condition you may have right now. Knowing that there could
be a reasonable case, would it not make sense to check this
out before resorting to drugs? What ever happened to diet,
lifestyle changes, and exercise? One other point you might
want to consider is that the American Medical Association
published some recommendations in July 2002 that should also
give you hope. Essentially, they said some degenerative
conditions can be reversed. And that has certainly been my
experience.

So once again, I want to thank Dr. Tom McGuire for
generously sharing his expertise on dental wellness with the
readers of thePebble. As you will find out, many unhealthy
conditions can be directly related to poor dental health.
Dr. McGuire shows us how to connect the evidence and what to
do about our discoveries. You will be very surprised at what
you will learn over the next few issues. In order for you to
keep this amazing reference or resource readily available, I
urge you to create a subfolder for your Pebble newsletter
and “filter” it directly into this folder. Then as you need
to refer back to what you learned, its retrieval will be
quick and painless.

I also ask you to respect Dr. McGuire’s copyright. Please
don’t use this information for anything other than your own
education. I can’t thank him enough for allowing us to use
his expert knowledge to help us understand serious health
issues. Did it ever occur to you that gastrointestinal
problems, or osteoporosis, or asthma could be related to
dental disease? Again, it reinforces the point that our
bodies are not separate entities, unrelated to any other
part. Instead, he shows us that all parts are completed
interrelated and we need to live in balance and harmony.

Have you ever had the desire to gather a group of scientists
together and try to understand how their knowledge could
relate to your personal life? Here is a unique opportunity
to not only find those research projects, but also to have
them “interpreted” for you so they are easy to understand.
Here you learn how this collective expertise can be applied
to your own situation. Dr. McGuire’s contact information
will be available with each issue. However, I do suggest
that you also spend some time on his very educational
website. http://www.dentalwellness4u.com/  Dr. Tom is also
available for telephone consultations regarding mercury
amalgam fillings, mercury detoxification, and the effects of
dental disease on overall health.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

Already, with only the first two days of school, Billy
had created a dramatic effect. Not all the village wanted
this. Many were now speaking out against him.

Billy knew that things would settle down but the folks
were simply not used to anyone who could forgive their sins.
It troubled them that this man was taking on authority they
had relegated to another source. Even here, in remote Africa
people looked upon God as someone separated from them and
passing judgement upon them.

None of the villagers could yet fathom the concept that
their Maker lived within their own breast. Most were talking
about Billy saying and doing things that only God could do.
They were becoming somewhat disconcerted, except, of course,
for the woman who really felt it when her sins were
forgiven. She was a powerful advocate for Billy.

The elders were not fast to change their minds about
what was going on. They trusted Billy and wanted to give him
more time. The ones in the village who were raising
opposition against him were the usual troublemakers. They
would cause trouble over anything. They were like that. So
the elders continued to support Billy and did their best to
settle the situation. They reminded the villagers that it
was Billy who freed them from the effects of black magic and
they most certainly would not want to have that returned.

Yet, Billy was on a short rope, and he knew it. He could
not do anything else to upset them for a while. He did not
do this to upset them anyway. He did it to make them think,
and that was certainly happening. Plus, he had now created a
condition where the villagers were far more receptive than
they could ever be otherwise. He has removed from them the
condition of fear and guilt, both conditions that would
serve to keep the villagers in ignorance for all their
lives. Having done that Billy could not begin to slowly
teach his Maker's laws and they would be pondered, thought
about and even implemented. These new ideas would fall on
fresh soil and would more easily germinate into
understanding, possibly commitment.

The next school day Billy once more had an increase in
his class size. The same number of kids were there, but the
adult population continued to grow.

"Today, kids and folks, I want to show you something
different. Come. All come with me and we will take a walk."

Billy led and began to walk down the hill toward the
plain and the herds. He stopped every once in a while and
asked the people with him to pick up a blade of grass, or a
stone. "Is there any life in this grass?" he asked.

"Yes."

"Good. You're right. But what is life? What makes you
think this grass is alive?"

They all had to think on that one. "How do you explain
life, anyway? What is it?"

Still no answers were forthcoming.

"Let's start with this. Would you call it a 'motivating
force', something that is within us and within this grass
that keeps us going, doing things, fulfilling our destiny?"

They all looked at him. This was pretty deep for most of
them, yet there was a sparkle in each eye.

"Think of life like that. Think of it as a motivating
force within you that keeps you going. Now, I want you to
think about something else, too. You see the grass you are
holding in your hand? That has exactly the same life force
living within it. That is what gives it life, so, in a sense
you and the grass are alike, brothers or sisters. What about
that rock? Does it have any life in it?"

Most of the people said "No."

"Aaahh! But you are wrong. It is true the rock doesn't
move or go anywhere, but it is still alive. If it were not
it would not be visible to you. The life force is given to
all in the universe, animate or inanimate. It is in the air
you breath, in the sunshine that falls on your skin, the
water you drink, the earth you walk on. The life force is
everywhere and it demands to live."

By now they were down on the plain. They were watching
the herds.

"Look at the life in all those animals. That is the same
life force you have in you. Your Maker, living within your
own breast is your life force. You can learn to tap into
this energy field and become powerful."

Suddenly, from out of nowhere came a charging lioness.
She was after a gazelle and the villagers had gotten in the
way. The people screamed, cowered and ran. It detracted the
cat and it saw the easier prey. It came after a little girl
within ten feet of Billy.

Billy put up his hand and broadcast love unto the big
cat. You could see the white light go from Billy's hand to
the cat. The animal stopped in it's tracks about five feet
from the little girl who had been too stunned to move. Billy
went to her. "You see, the big cat didn't want to hurt you.
Would you like to pet it? Come, look."

Billy moved toward the big cat. She, by now was seated
on her rear haunches, breathing hard from her thwarted
attack. Her tongue was hanging out and she was watching
Billy intensely.

As Billy got closer, he put his hand out to the cat. She
smelled it and knew there was nothing to fear. Billy went
closer and petted her. "Come, little one. Pet this nice cat
and show her you are not afraid. I will protect you."

The little girl had been warned against this all her
short life. She was fearful. Billy had his hand on the
lioness and was still broadcasting love into her. He reached
out to the little girl with his other hand and was
broadcasting love unto her as well. It helped her overcome
her fear. She came to Billy and began to pet the cat.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Ham Actor: Why is a poor actor called a "ham"?

This theatrical slang term contemptuously applied to
low-grade actors is a shortening of the term "hamfatter".
"Hamfatter" comes from the old-tme blackface comedian's
practice of putting "ham fat" on his face-so that it would
be easy for him to remove the burnt cork after the show. All
"whiteface" actors once looked down on "blackface"
comedians; many still do.

I couldn't help laughing when I realized it was an envelope
