What is the Human Genome Project?
The Human Genome Project is an international 13-year effort,
formally begun in 1990, to identify all the approximately
100,000 genes in human DNA and determine the sequences of
the three billion chemical bases that make up human DNA. To
help achieve these goals, researchers are also studying the
genetic makeup of several nonhuman organisms, including the
fruit fly, the mouse, and the common human gut bacterium
Escherichia coli. Knowing more about the effects of DNA
variations among individuals can lead to new ways to
diagnose, treat, and prevent disorders.
What exactly is a "genome"?
A genome is all the DNA in an organism, including its genes.
Genes, of course, carry information for making the proteins
required by all organisms. These proteins determine how the
organism looks, how well its body metabolizes food or fights
infection, and many other things.

Tips And Tidbits
Intel looks beyond the microchip Spencer Kelly
by Spencer Kelly
Intel's new CEO, Paul Otellini, outlines new directions for
a company best known for making computer chips.
Paul Otellini, Intel CEO Of all the companies in the
technology community, Intel has to have had the hardest job
of selling itself.
It makes one of the smallest devices in the computer, which
you never see, and which is probably one of the most
technically complicated devices available to the consumer.
Yet the vast majority of us know the manufacturer's name -
no mean feat.
When big computers roamed the earth there was only a small
number of people involved in buying them; they cost so much
and were so specialised that only the richest of companies
could have them.
So, like the mainframes that went before it, there was
little clue as to what was inside and actually drove the
first PC. This was a relatively new device and the
microprocessor was only 10 years old and almost unknown
outside the hi-tech world.
However, by the late 1980s Intel's name was on millions of
PC users' lips, and, as the number of PCs in the world
rumbled into the hundreds of millions, it was soon to be on
the lips of more.
Intel logo During the 1990s Intel consolidated its position
as the number one microprocessor manufacturer. But 2006 sees
major changes: new processors, a new logo, and a new CEO,
Paul Otellini.
Despite the new logo, Mr Otellini says the company has not
fundamentally changed.
"We're still a technology company, we're still the world's
largest semi-conductor company.
"But the direction in which our products are going and the
markets that we serve are changing. We felt this was
important enough a change to be able to signal that to the
public at large.
"And today the whole marketing approach of the company, the
product definition approach has to do with: What do
consumers want to solve particular problems in their
businesses, homes, healthcare etc.
"To do that we thought that we needed a different and
fresher image."
Core product
Intel has tried to simplify the way we think of their chips,
although it is not clear if it will work.
All microprocessor chips have a core. The current Intel
core, the Pentium, is on its way out, to be replaced by a
new core, called "Core".
Consumers can select within a given family the best product
to meet their needs Paul Otellini, Intel CEO It all sounds a
bit like Intel's hijacking a technical term and trying to
turn it into a brand name.
These new Core chips come in two flavours. Solo Core is a
single core processor, and Duo Core is a dual core
processor.
I can tell the difference between a Celeron and a Pentium,
but if we have two Solos side by side how are we going to be
able to tell which is better than which?
Mr Otellini says: "We have that same consideration today
with our Pentium line or other manufacturers' lines.
"We provide - at least for the consumers who care - very
detailed references of the specifications. There will be a
numbering scheme that suggests what are the features, what's
the speed, what's the performance and so forth.
"So consumers can select within a given family the best
product to meet their needs."
Entertaining future
Perhaps the biggest announcement from Intel so far is the
Viiv standard.
Viiv is less technology and more a shopping list of
technologies. Aimed fair and square at the home
entertainment market, it defines the latest generation of
media centres that are capable of playing anything from MP3
songs to high-definition films.
One of the features of Viiv is a very fast boot-up and
switch on.
"We are not just a hardware company," says Mr Otellini. "We
ship over one million lines of software with every
microprocessor that goes out the door to be able to handle
all of the functions around the microprocessor: the audio,
the video, the graphics, and things like the power
management.
"You see that every day in your notebook. The notebook is
very efficient at managing power.
"All we've done with Viiv is take some of those same power
management techniques - instant on, instant resume - that
we've developed for mobile technology, and now we're taking
it in a different fashion to things for the living room.
In two to five years time, the typical home PC will, says Mr
Otellini, still do the same basic functionality of a
computer.
"It does all the things you do today with a consumer PC:
internet access, storing digital media, videos, home music.
None of that is going to be different.
"What will be different is how you see it and where you see
it.
"This technology allows us, instead of walking up to that
two-foot screen on your computer in your den or kitchen or
wherever you have it, to sit in the comfort of your living
room with a single remote.
"You can access not only all the content that was on your
machine in PC mode, but also you'll be able to go on to the
internet and bring down this premium content, mostly
high-definition, and enjoy that on the big screen in the
house, and move it around the house."

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 2 of 31
The terms oral health and general health
should not be interpreted as separate entities. Oral
health is integral to general health: oral health means
more than healthy teeth and you cannot be healthy
without oral health, Donna Shalala, Secretary of
Health and Human Services in Oral Health America: A
Report of the Surgeon General, 2000.
I couldnt think of a better way to begin this booklet
than to underscore the effect of oral health on overall
health. But just how does her statement about oral
health correlate to health and longevity? It does
because healthy people live longer and the quality of
their lives is far superior. There are a number of
commonly known factors related to the study of health
and longevity that almost everyone will recognize. Some
of the more common factors include:
1. Healthy diet;
2. Intelligent nutritional supplementation;
3. Healthy lifestyle;
4. Elimination of harmful substances, such as tobacco,
alcohol, and drugs;
5. Stress reduction;
6. Exercise; and
7. A healthy emotional and mental life.
Every proponent of optimal health understands the
relationship between these factors and health and
longevity; without a doubt, they are all important.
However, I suggest that there is another factor missing
from this list, one that also plays an overlooked but
significant role in overall health. This factor is
dental disease and its harmful effect on the health of
the body.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

----------------
"So Billy's going to go and get himself married?" Eloise
was sitting at the kitchen table in the Henry household.
She, the kids and Mazunta had come up to visit her folks for
a few days.
"Looks that way, Sis. I think it's great." Tim and
Sharon had come over to visit as well. There was a kind of
Henry family reunion going on, a spontaneous one,
unorganized, it just happened.
Tom and Tlang were there, too, from China. Tom was not
the only one taken with Tlang. She had a perfect body,
wonderful complexion, loving spirit and humble attitude. She
melted the heart of anyone near her.
Maz was clearly the male counterpart. He was a huge man,
humble in spirit, strong and powerful, thoughtful in nature
and magnetic in personality.
Yet, the family seemed to wait for pronouncements from
Eloise or from Sam. Both were, in their way, the leaders of
the family and respected as such.
Eloise gained that position from her bravery in taking
that perilous journey so many years ago, and having found
the way to live as one's Maker wants. She was the "pioneer
in the spirit" so to speak.
Sam Henry, on the other hand, was an humble man whom
people everywhere respected. He was a born leader and just
naturally seemed to have complete command of all
circumstances. Sam had been appointed to the Temple of the
White Brotherhood, an important role in doing the work. It
was not an organization as man knows organization. The work
done by the Temple of the White Brotherhood is global in
nature and they are continuously present to "ease" man's
trials in earth. Sam had shown himself to be particularly
courageous and steadfast, qualities which led to his
appointment.
When the Henry family got together the love they emitted
could be felt for blocks. It permeated everything. Now,
after all these years there were grandchildren who had also
crossed over the veil of simplicity. They, too, added to the
mix.
Tom and Tlang had announced they were going to wed. They
had wanted to do so at a time that conflicted with Billy's
plans. Billy wasn't aware of their thinking, being too busy
in Africa. Yet Tom and Tlang had tuned in to Billy and
discovered he was planning his marriage to Sonora during the
next animal migration on the Serengeti. That was right
around the time Tom and Tlang were thinking. So, without any
fanfare they simply elected to delay their plans until after
the wedding of Billy and Sonora.
Tlang was not sure she was going to make it that far.
She had long ago overcome the stigma of her introduction to
sexual affairs when she was a youngster of five or six, at
the hands of ruthless men who cared not for her or her
feelings. It took Tlang a few years to overcome that "mental
thing" that kept her wary and afraid of sexual contact.
However, when she learned and committed to higher law that
past was banished from her mind and today she was free to
love as she wished. And at the moment she wished to love
this handsome young man called Tom Henry.
For his part, the being together yet not participating
in the sexual act, was creating a problem for Tom, too. He
wasn't sure he could last the time they decided to wait,
either.
Things like this pass, as we all know, but for the
young, in the condition, each day seems like an eternity.
Sam and Alewka knew what was going on in the minds of
their son and his fiance, their future daughter in law. They
intended to speak with them on the subject sometime in the
next day or two, just to help the kids settle their minds.
"Billy must be busy. He hasn't been around any of us to
let us know of his wedding plans." Eloise made the
observation.
Tom spoke. "The last we saw of them was when Amenti and
Reno and us spent about a week with those two. We all had a
fantastic time together. We just stayed out on the plains
for all that time, with the herds. It was a wonderful time,
sharing with others suffering the same feelings we were. We
liked it. It was then that Billy finally got caught. You
know, a man chases a woman until she catches him!"
There was laughter from all. They well recognized the
truth of that last little bit of Tom's words.
Alewka had more coffee coming. The gathering, as usual,
was around the Henry kitchen table. For this gathering they
had to move the table out from the wall and bring in a few
extra chairs.
Tim and Sharon were expecting children. Sharon was
pregnant and the child was expected within the month. She
was one of those fortunate ladies who not only had no
difficulty with the pregnancy but she literally glowed with
the joy of an expectant mother. Tim and Sharon would be good
parents, just like Maz and Eloise.
That the Henry family was growing was something that
sent pangs of pride into the hearts of Sam and Alewka. They
had always been proud of their kids but seeing them begin
families of their own was something that was a deep, deep
joy.
The back door opened and who should appear but Susan
Miles.
"Susan! My its good to see you. We've missed you, what
with all your travels. How are you?"

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Handicap: Where does the word "handicap" come from?
The word comes from the usual procedure in drawing lots.
Slips of paper are placed in a hat or "cap" and each person
in turn draws one out by placing his"hand i' the cap". This
practice is still followed in drawing for position in a
horse race. Slips bearing the names of the horses are drawn
from a hat and the first horse drawn gets the position next
to the rail, the second horse gets the next position and so
on.

HA! HA! HA!
A woman goes to the local psychic in hopes of contacting her
dearly departed grandmother. The psychic's eyelids begin
fluttering, her voice begins warbling, her hands float up
above the table, and she begins moaning. Eventually, a
coherent voice emanates, saying, "Granddaughter? Are you
there?"
The customer, wide-eyed and on the edge of her seat,
responds, "Grandmother? Is that you?"
"Yes granddaughter, it's me."
"It's really, really you, grandmother?", the woman repeats.
"Yes, it's really me, granddaughter."
The woman looks puzzled, "You're sure it's you,
grandmother?"
"Yes, granddaughter, I'm sure it's me."
The woman pauses a moment, "Grandmother, I have just one
question for you."
"Anything, my child."
"Grandmother, when did you learn to speak English?"
