ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What country would Sinbad the Sailor be from if the story
were written today?
Sinbad would be an Iraqi. He originally set sail from Basra,
now Iraq. (The story of his seven remarkable voyages is told
in The Thousand and One Nights.)
What is the structure of The Thousand and One Nights?
The Thousand and One Nights (also known as the Book of the
Thousand and One Nights and Arabian Nights Entertainment)
begins with King Shahriya, who has become so disgusted with
what he sees as the unfaithfulness of women that he vows to
have a new wife each night and to execute her the following
morning. Shahrazad (also spelled Sheherazade and numerous
other ways) is clever when it comes to her turn. She tells
her sister Dunyzad to come into the room on the wedding
night and request a story. The King is so entranced with her
tale, which she cleverly doesn't finish, that he lets her
live another night to hear the conclusion. She goes on in
this way for 1,001 nights, telling 1,001 stories, beginning
a new story each time she ends another, but never concluding
a story when the night is done. Eventually, of course, the
King changes his views on women and Shahrazad remains his
wife.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW!
with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler

Matters Of The Heart
Happy Valentines Day! Are you thinking of love? Whether you
are filled with joy at the love you share with a significant
other, or, you are feeling empty and alone, you are still
thinking of love. As the greeting card industry makes this
into a day for lovers, lets us make this day to celebrate
love of all kinds
and lets begin with love for ourselves!
Today is the day to take yourself out for your favorite
food, wear you favorite clothes, buy the flowers you admire
and call everyone you care about and tell them so. Love is
in the giving, and you have lots of love to give. You renew
that resource yourself!
I want to be clear that I am not suggesting that you do what
some foolish myths says Give til it hurts! Thats the
most absurd thing when you really think about it. Giving
feels good. When it stops feeling good, it is time to
re-evaluate the relationship with yourself and with the
other person.
Some folks have been taught to believe that if you just dig
deeper, go further and push through resentment youll
somehow be a better person. That leads to deep-seated anger
which wont stay hidden forever. We give love because we
want to. Simple as that. Sure, sometimes, we have to do a
few mental gymnastics to remind ourselves of the principles
we choose to live from in this moment. It doesnt always
come completely naturally. We may have to undo a few gifts
from the past to embrace our possible now.
Open your heart today. A heart fully alive understands that
only through openness can love be fully experienced.
Everything is understood by its opposite. Never be afraid of
pain. Embrace love now.

Those who seek peace or quiet think that separation from others

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 4 of 31
Before I enter into the substantive area of this
booklet, I feel it will be useful to provide some
background information about dental disease and offer
some insights into why its role in overall health is
often been overlooked.
Dental Disease What is commonly referred to as dental
disease is actually two separate diseases: tooth decay
and gum disease. You can have one without the other or
both simultaneously. The terms gum disease and
periodontal disease are often used interchangeably,
even though periodontal disease is much more
destructive form of the disease. Technically, gum
disease is broken down into two categories: gingivitis,
the initial and milder form of gum disease, and
periodontitis, the more advanced and serious form that
has infected both the soft tissue and the surrounding
bone.
While the basic cause of tooth decay and gum disease is
poor oral hygiene (due to a lack of patient education
and/or motivation) other factors are involved. Diet,
smoking, vitamin deficiency, and toxic substances such
as mercury can also contribute to dental disease. Of
the two diseases, gum disease, especially in its most
advanced form, is the most harmful to general health.
Certainly, tooth decay can affect ones health. It can
prevent proper chewing and thereby affect digestion. It
can also cause tooth loss, again affecting digestion.
Clearly, it can contribute to systemic health problems,
but its effects on overall health are considerably less
than the effects of gum disease.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"You know, everybody. Sometime ago David created and
erected a statue of a chap who used to live around here. He
was a happy sort of fellow, a loner. He never married and
never had a real job. He used to be our town crier. He'd
sweep sidewalks in the summer and shovel them in the winter.
He was quite a character. When he died the city fathers
thought it a good idea to erect a statue in his memory. They
asked David if he would carve it.
They put it up right at the end of Main Street,
downtown. You should see it. It is very lifelike and it has
had an enormous impact on the town. How many of you have
seen it?"
Sam knew the show of hands would be minimal. "Well,
that's why I brought it up. We should all go have a look at
it. David did a wonderful job. He imbued it with powers so
it would continue to serve the town just as Old Pete did.
Let's have a bite to eat and then let's go for a walk
downtown. You'll like what you see."
"Okay, Dad. I'd like to see it. What do you say Tlang?"
"That would be fine. I have not heard of it nor seen it.
I should for when I see Mr. David."
"That's a good idea, Dad. Let's do that." Eloise had not
seen the statue either, but had heard about it.
Lunch was not a long affair, yet it did take an hour.
There were a lot of people around this table, thirteen in
all.
Lunch over and all cleaned up the whole bunch of them
walked out the front door and began the walk downtown. It
was a gorgeous day. The sun was shining, only the gentlest
of breezes to keep the air changing. It was one of those
summer days that was hard to beat.
The walk was not fast and took maybe an hour. They just
sauntered, so to speak. The kids, Sammy and AliAnn, even
though they lived now by higher law, still liked to kick
stones down the road.
Sam Henry was not a hard man to recognize. As they
walked they would get the occasional honk from a passing
car, or a wave, as the people in the car recognized Sam.
Otherwise it was a quiet, peaceful, warm day, until the
incident.
A car drove past. Sam recognized some of the town
ruffians, youth who had no respect for authority and were
bent on causing a little trouble now and then.
Sure enough the car saw them and drove on. A short
distance and they were at a corner. Rather than turn the
corner they pulled a U-turn with tires screaming. Sam knew
they were headed for trouble. He immediately put up a shield
around the entire group.
As the car approached the windows were being rolled down
as they came closer. Once the car was abreast of them the
occupants began to throw rocks.
The rocks hit the shield and bounced back onto and into
the car. The rocks now had considerable speed and if one hit
you anywhere it would deliver quite a blow. There were
screams of pain from within the car.
The rocks didn't stop when they hit the car or a person.
They just kept moving back and force as they ricocheted
around inside the car almost like there were bees in the
car.
The driver lost control and as he was careening off the
side of the road. BANG! He had driven right into a large
tree.
The car ended up with a deep V in front and some pretty
shook up inhabitants.
The family rushed to the car and immediately began
working to render each occupant as perfect. They all had
banged heads, some had cuts and bruises, and one had a
broken leg. He was screaming the loudest. His pain was
almost unbearable for him. He had a bone sticking out of the
flesh of his leg and there was blood everywhere.
The man, while a ruffian, had never liked the sight of
blood, especially his own and especially in this quantity.
It took very little time to get everything organized and
none of the other occupants of the car were injured too bad.
The broken leg was the worst, although from the racket this
man set up you would think the whole town was in pain.
Sam went over to him and told him to, "Shut up. You want
to participate in the fun that allowed you to throw rocks at
us, but you don't like the results, is that it? You started
this. Now how tough do you think you look. You should know
better." With a wave of his hand the young lads leg was
better, his ripped clothing was renewed, the blood was
cleaned up.
Sam walked up to the front of the car. There was a deep
V where the front of the car tried to go around both sides
of the tree at once. With another wave the car was renewed.
Sam walked up to the drivers side. "Now scat. Get out of
here."
He hadn't finished the words before the wheels were
spinning and the car sped off.
"What was all that about, Dad?"
"Tinkerbell (Sam's nickname for Eloise), I don't know. I
don't think it was anything past the town ruffians thinking
they had an advantage over us. They expected us to run, in
fear."
"Guess they didn't know who they were dealing with,
huh?"
"Oh I think they knew who we were, but they clearly did
not realize what we were capable of doing."

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Handwriting on the wall: Where do we get the expression
"handwriting on the wall"?
It's an allusion to the Bible. According to Daniel 5
"handwriting" appeared on the wall of Belshazzar's palace
wall "Mene, Mene, Tekel Upharsin". This writing announced to
Belshazzar the loss of his kingdom.

HA! HA! HA!
Our young daughter had adopted a stray cat. To my distress,
he began to use the back of our new sofa as a scratching
post. "Don't worry," my husband reassured me. "I'll have him
trained in no time."
I watched for several days as my husband patiently "trained"
our new pet. Whenever the cat scratched, my husband
deposited him outdoors to teach him a lesson.
The cat learned quickly. For the next 16 years, whenever he
wanted to go outside, he scratched the back of the sofa.
