ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

Where did the tales in The Thousand and One Nights come
from?
According to John Crocker -- whose excellent website on the
tales contains information on adaptations
of The Thousand and One Nights in music, literature, and
film -- the early history of the stories is "shrouded in the
mists of time." Crocker notes that the tales originated from
Indian, Persian, and Chinese merchants who traveled the
Chinese silk route, which extended from northern China to
the Middle East and Egypt. The first identifiable written
version appears to have been a book of Persian tales called
Hazar Afsanah (A Thousand Legends), translated into Arabic
circa A.D. 850. The stories were kept alive mainly by
storytellers in Egypt, Persian and Arabia. The framework
story of Shahrazad and the Sultan Shahiyar is thought to be
Indian in origin, but the genesis of the individual tales
remains controversial.
What's the difference between a squid and an octopus?
Basically, it's a matter of arms. An octopus has eight arms,
while a squid has ten. Squid have eight of the same length
arm and two extra long ones (called tentacles) used to latch
onto prey. Both squids and octopuses have suckers on their
arms to help them capture prey. Both squids and octopuses
belong to the "cephalopod" family.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------
Time Changes Your Point Of View
This guy is stranded on a desert island, all alone
for ten years.
One day, he sees a speck in the horizon. He
thinks to himself, "It's not a ship." The speck gets
a little closer and he thinks, "It's not a boat." The
speck gets even closer and he thinks, "It's not a raft."
Then, out of the surf comes this gorgeous blonde
woman, wearing a wet suit and scuba gear. She
comes up to the guy and says, "How long has it
been since you've had a cigarette?" "Ten
years!", he says.
She reaches over and unzips a waterproof pocket
on her left sleeve and pulls out a pack of fresh
cigarettes.
He takes one, lights it, takes a long drag, and says,
"Man, oh man! Is that good!" Then she asked, "How
long has it been since you've had a drink of
whiskey?" He replies, "Ten years!" She reaches
over, unzips her waterproof pocket on her right
sleeve, pulls out a flask and gives it to him.
He takes a long swig and says, "Wow, that's
fantastic !" Then she starts unzipping this long
zipper that runs down the front of her wet suit and
she says to him, "And how long has it been
since you've had some REAL fun?"
And the man replies, "My God ! Don't tell me that
you've got golf clubs in there!"
I'm pretty sure most folks reading the joke above would
be thinking different than the stranded man on the island.
Yet it should be a reminder to us that as we proceed
through life our point of view changes, our desires
change, our sense of value changes.
When we start out as young folks right out of school
we, nearly all, are going to change the world. We are
full of energy, ideals, ideas, and desires.
As life goes on we change. Either life knocks a lot of
those things out of us or we become educated with a
touch of reality. We begin to see life isn't fair, that the
ideals as to how life should be just don't exist, and we
fight that for a while. Then we succumb to the knowledge
the ideal will not be.
From there we go into a bit of a shell and begin to think
of the things we want, regardless of the ideals we began
with. We now begin to think in terms of material goods,
jobs, security, spouse, home, kids. As time goes on we
become firmly ensconced in a habit pattern that renders
us no longer lively, energetic, idealistic.
Soon we have the car, the house, the boat, the kids with
braces on their teeth, go to church every Sunday, and
a vacation once a year. We try to keep up with all the
things we can do with our money like all the new techie
things that come along every year.
Then we notice, strangely, that the flashy car is no
longer as important to us as it was when we were
young.
You thought you could water ski forever, and now you
have lost interest. You thought would play hockey,
football, soccer or lacrosse forever. Now you've lost
interest.
Your sense of values has changed. On the front end
when you don't have these material goods, that is all
you can think about, and you work hard to get them.
Once you have these things it soon sets in that they
somehow have lost their appeal. Oh! Yes! They are
nice to have, but somehow they are not as important
as they once were.
So what is happening?
Life is happening, that's what is happening. It is the
normal evolutionary circumstances of every life in earth.
The young who are wise will harken and think about
these things. They can prevent a lot of heartache along
the way if they were to heed the end of life at the
beginning of life.
It is very much like the adage that says you cannot
know how to live until you are ready to die.
If you would do well today, consider what your values
will be when you are seventy. If you would succeed
today, see yourself as a person seventy five years old
and watch the things you will be doing then. Success
AND Happiness is the journey - - NOT the destination.
Think on that.

Anxiety, fear, stress are all symptoms of one who is not in
communication with their Maker inside. Some fear punishment from
a fictitious person sitting on some fictitious throne who is
looking down upon you just waiting for you to do wrong. Your
Maker lives within your own breast and the sooner you have a
communication with your Maker the sooner peace, rest, prosperity
become the symptoms you display.

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 5 of 31
Both forms of dental disease are so prevalent that it
is an epidemic by any standard. Ninety percent of the
population has, or has had, some form of these
diseases. It is estimated that between 30 and 50% of
the population has periodontitis, the most destructive
form of dental disease (it is difficult to effectively
gauge the percentage, as approximately 50% of the
population do not see a dentist on a regular basis).
Dental disease can cause:
Gum disease;
Bleeding;
Abscesses;
Tooth decay;
Tooth loss;
Bad breath; and
Unsightly teeth.
Dental disease can also generate a great deal of
stress. It can create fear and anxiety, pain, and
discomfort. It can also be very expensive, especially
when the cost of treatment is added up over a lifetime.
As destructive and costly as dental disease is, most
people, including dentists and physicians, have somehow
managed to convince themselves that its damaging
effects are limited to the teeth and gums. I believe
this is because most people tend to think that the
mouth is not actually a part of the body . . . or it is
some how outside of the body.
I also feel that there is a communication gap between
the medical and dental professions. This gap, in
effect, means that vital information on the overall
health of the patient is not normally shared between
the two professions. But whatever the reason, the
result is that most people, including health
professionals, do not understand the seriousness of
dental disease and its impact on overall health. Yet,
it should be obvious to any health professional that
infection (especially a serious and
long-lastingchronicinfection) in any part of the body
will always negatively affect the entire body.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

There were no further incidents and the family continued
to walk into the downtown core. This was a Saturday and
because of that the business area was busy. Folks were
shopping for all kinds of things.
As the family walked down the sidewalk they were
recognized by nearly everyone who passed them. Some folks
would say "Hi", others would nod while others would
sheepishly look away and whisper to the person they were
with about who they were just passing.
However well known Sam and/or members of his family
were, they were still outcasts in Pinehill. Oh, they were no
longer ostracized but folks just couldn't relate to them.
Their reputation was such the usual guy on the street felt
they were way out of his league, so folks were polite but
few wanted to stay and talk.
The family could see, for many blocks actually, the
statue that David created. It had been placed in such a way
as to be seen as if at the head of the street. It stuck out
from the row of buildings and was quite visible for a long
way off. The city had it well lit, although the statue gave
off its own light. It was easy to see, too, that it would
give off sufficient warmth that it would melt the winter
snows. There was a light emitting from it that gave the
whole statue a halo effect. There were people around it.
"I have never come past here without seeing folks
sitting around the statue. It is a warm, loving place to be.
The townsfolk all come here to sit and think. David created
quite a place here. There are even reports of people feeling
better after they visit the statue. They are treating it as
if it were a shrine. Oh, they don't worship here but they
sure come here to commune with their God." Sam was
explaining some of what went on around the statue.
"That's pretty good, Daddy. I think David did a
marvelous job. And he was the one who objected so much to
higher law."
"Yes he was Tinkerbell. Now look at him, for that matter
even his children. Like yours they all live by higher law,
as does Pam. Has Pam been up here to see her folks lately?"
"I don't think so Dad."
"People sure do react against higher law don't they.
They become so afraid of it. There are very few like Sharon
here, who wade in with both feet and are determined to find
the truth about it. That is why you are so valuable to the
cause, honey, (Sam was speaking to Sharon) because you know
the hard way and the value of commitment. I'm sure glad
you're my daughter-in-law." Sam put his arm around Sharon
and hugged her.
Sharon liked that. She had always had a deep regard and
respect for Sam Henry ever since she first met him. That he
thought highly of her meant a lot to her. Her baby kicked.
Apparently he liked it too. Oh, yes, it was a boy.
They finally reached the statue. They were filled with
awe. David had created a statue that was so life like one
almost expected Old Pete to step off the pedestal and start
announcing messages just like he did when he walked these
streets everyday. There was a warmth to the place and even
though there were birds around there was no evidence of
their droppings anywhere. It was as if the birds themselves
had a high regard for the place.
"Many folk come from miles around. There have been
television documentaries about this place, newspaper stories
and all sorts of gossip. It brings people in from all over.
There are real reports of people being healed when they come
here."
"What does the city think of all that Dad?"
"They love it Tinkerbell. It brings in a lot of tourists
and is entirely unique. Pinehill's reputation is spreading
far and wide and the city fathers like that. No television
program talks about the statue without including some of the
aldermen or the mayor. They love it, even though they don't
understand what's going on."
"How about Ben Striker or Darryl Sparks? Do they know
what's going on?
"Of course, honey. They all know the complete story."
"I think it's wonderful. I'm going to have to compliment
David upon my return. He has done well, hasn't he Maz."
"He has Bueno, (this was Mazunta's pet name for Eloise)
and I think it will serve the people of this area for
centuries to come."
"Wow! You're a big thinker."
Slowly they each had a good long look at the statue and
each went inside themselves to see what David had done. They
were pleased. Sam began to walk away only this time he
walked on the side of the street opposite to the one they
came down. He was giving them a real tour of the place for
none of his kids had been here for many years.
It had been ten years now since the town had blown up in
that explosion. The citizens had rebuilt and the buildings
had been there long enough to give the impression of age.
Dust and dirt had settled into cracks and on ledges.
Pigeons had created nests here and there. There was the
occasional cracked window here and there and all sorts of
signs the buildings were being used.
"Boy, I remember when this place was a disaster." Billy
was one of the family who had been a major help in saving
people.
"That was some mess wasn't it. Fortunately we haven't
had any more disasters like that one. Folks still talk about
that like it was a pivotal point in their lives."
"Well, Sam, it was. Even for us it was pretty
significant."
"Yes, Billy it was."

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Hang Fire: What is the reason a delayed action is said to
"Hang fire"?
It's because a flintlock gun does not always go off
immediately. Thought the spark has been set, the powder in
the pan may fizz for a while before exploding the charge
behind the shot.

HA! HA! HA!
Bob received a free ticket to the Super Bowl from his
company. Unfortunately, when Bob arrived at the stadium he
realized the seat was in the last row in the corner of the
stadium. He was closer to the Goodyear Blimp than the field!
About halfway through the first quarter, Bob noticed an
empty seat 10 rows off the field right on the 50-yard line.
He decided to take a chance and made his way through the
stadium and around the security guards to the empty seat. As
he sat down, he asked the gentleman sitting next to him,
"Excuse me, is anyone sitting here?" The man said "No." Very
excited to be in such a great seat for the game, Bob said to
the man next to him, "This is incredible! Who in their right
mind would have a seat like this at the Super Bowl and not
use it?!"
The man replied, "Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I
was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This
is the first Super Bowl we haven't attended together since
we got married in 1967." "That's really sad," said Bob, "But
still, couldn't you find someone to take the seat? A
relative or a close friend?" "No," the man replied, "They're
all at the funeral."
