TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

Is it true that the Iditarod race commemorates an historic
medical run?

Is it true that dog sled drivers start their dogs off by
yelling, "Mush!"?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Can octopuses walk around out of the water?

Yes. Some species of octopus can crawl up out of the water
briefly to go hunting or exploring. Octopuses have even been
known to crawl out of fish tanks.

How long is Alaska's famous Iditarod race?

Called the "Last Great Race on Earth," Alaska's Iditarod
race runs from Anchorage (in south central Alaska) to Nome
(on the western Bering Sea coast). Each contestant and his
dog sled team cover over 1,150 miles (many of them on rough,
treacherous terrain) in about 10-17 days. The race course
crosses two mountain ranges as well as the frozen pack ice
of Norton Sound.

Lawmaker Takes Aim At Internet Companies' China Policies

REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN CHRIS SMITH OF New Jersey introduced
legislation Thursday that would prohibit Google, Yahoo, MSN
and other companies from censoring search results or
disclosing users' identities without approval by the
Department of Justice. Earlier this week, the companies'
China policies met with a hostile reception in Congress. ''I
simply do not understand how your corporate executives sleep
at night," California Democrat Tom Lantos told the
companies. Microsoft recently removed a Chinese journalist's
blog on MSN Spaces, and last month, Google launched a China
search engine that censors Web sites seen as critical of the
government. Additionally, the Paris-based group Reporters
Without Borders charged that Yahoo revealed the identity of
e-mail user Shi Tao to the authorities; last year, the
Chinese journalist was sentenced to 10 years in prison for
revealing state secrets, based on using a personal Yahoo
e-mail account to forward an e-mail his newspaper had
received from the Chinese government to a U.S. human rights
group.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 7 of 31

How Dental Disease Does Its Damage Various forms of
dental disease result in infection, which will always
affect overall systemic health—to one degree or
another. Specific infections directly related to dental
disease can contribute to problems such as periapical
abscesses (infections of the dental nerve and surround
bone) and cavitations of the jaws (infections left when
a tooth was extracted).

However, the most serious damage done by dental
disease is caused by the more advanced form of gum
disease. Every health practitioner understands that the
body is negatively affected by infection of any kind.
The more serious the infection, and the longer it is
present, the greater its potential for damaging overall
health. Any infection stresses the immune system. The
extent of its effect on that system is directly related
to the extent, type, and duration, and location of the
infection.

It is also important to understand that periodontal
disease does not just involve the soft tissue of the
mouth. If left unchecked, gum disease will progress
until the underlying bone structure of the jaws is
infected. As the periodontal pocket continues to deepen
it becomes a haven for many types of harmful bacteria.
Over time, the bacterial infection continues to expand,
exposing the circulatory system to ever increasing
numbers of virulent bacteria and their toxins.
Remember, this is the same blood that travels
throughout the entire body and as such, it can carry
the bacteria and its toxins to other parts of the body,
including the heart, lungs, kidneys and liver.

Looking at it from another perspective will help you to
better understand the extent and seriousness of this
oral infection. It has been estimated that in a mild
form of gum disease, if laid out flat, the total
infected area would be about the size of a postcard. In
the case of moderate-to-severe gum disease, the total
infected area could cover an area the size of a
standard sheet of paper. Now, imagine if this infected
area was then transferred from the mouth to the neck
(or any other part of your body). If any competent
health professional saw this amount of infection in any
part of the body he or she would consider this to be a
very serious infection and suggest immediate treatment.
Yet, this type of infection is present, and left
untreated, in hundreds of millions of people in the USA
and worldwide.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

your favorite bookstore. ISBN # 1-4137-4723-X

All went well with the coffee scene. The kids loved the
milkshakes and the adults loved just sitting and talking.
Then the calls came in.

Three separate calls came for Mazunta, Tim and Ben.

They had never been together before when this kind of
thing happened. Usually all were asked to come help at a
large incident. This time it just happened to be each was
needed at a single and separate incident.

Maz excused himself and was off. Tim and Ben did
likewise.

Maz set down on a farm in the midwest U.S. The place was
an old homestead and some visitors had come for the day. One
of the visitors youngsters was snooping around outside and
had fallen into an old well. It had been quite some time he
had been down there. The water was not so deep he was going
to drown but it was so cold down there the youngster was by
now suffering from hypothermia.

Maz, invisible to all but the boy went down into the
well with the youngster. That is the situation Maz found.
The boy could no longer stand, even speak. He was numb and
much longer his heart would have stopped. Maz looked at the
boy and commanded the boy look at him. Holding his hands
toward the boy, Maz sent love and warmth into the lad.

The lad began to moan and move. Maz warmed up the
environment and the boy was warming up.

The boy yelled up to his would be rescuers that he was
all right. This was the first they had heard from him in
minutes. They were relieved.

"Stand" Maz's voice was one of authority. Once the boy
stood, his clothes were instantly dry and he was warming up,
at least so his teeth were no longer chattering.

"Son, I'm going to lift you up so you can reach the
hands of your rescuers. Are you ready to travel?"

"Y . . . yes!"

"Good. Here we go. Step onto my hands."

As the boy took this step he found himself rising within
the well. The circle of light surrounded with faces was
getting closer. He could see his Mother and his Father. He
could see the host and hostess and a couple kids. Then he
was there. They were all reaching for his hands. The boy
could feel the solid footing beneath him and it made him
feel secure.

Then, when his Dad had a good secure hold on his arms,
the boy felt the support leave his feet. His Dad pulled and
the boy was out of the well and standing on the ground.

Everyone was asking how he was. They were poking,
nodding, all talking at once. His Mother grabbed him and
hugged him. She felt warm.

"How did you get to the top of the well?"

"A man was down there with me Mom. He pushed me up until
I could reach Dad."

"Now you know that isn't true. How did you get up to the
top?"

"That's how, Mom, honest."

"Where is this man that I might thank him?"

The boy looked around. Mazunta, once knowing the boy was
safe, had left to return to the restaurant.

The boy, in his mind, said "Thank you."

To his surprise he heard "You are welcome. We will talk
tonight."

Tim had been called to the mid west U.S. as well. He had
been asked to look out for an older boy who was rounding up
cattle on a ranch. The boy was alone and a storm was closing
in on him. Just as Tim arrived the winds, thunder and
lightning had spooked the boys mount and they were off on a
race the boy couldn't get stopped.

Sure enough the animal tripped and fell. The boy went
head over heels onto the slippery ground and hit his head on
a rock. He was lying there motionless.

Tim spoke out, loud. The boy did not move. Thunder,
lightning and rain were all about. The boy's horse had
managed to escape injury and was now back looking for the
boy.

Tim put his hand on the boy's forehead. He sent love and
warmth into the lad. The lad stirred. Tim continued to hold
the boy's forehead. Slowly, ever so slowly, the boy began to
move.

Tim now stood at the boy's feet and commanded the boy
look directly at him.

"Rise up and walk."

The boy tried to get up on his feet. It took him several
tries.

"You will be all right, son. You just had a nasty fall."

"Who are you?"

"Just call me Tim. Your horse is unhurt and is now
calmed down. That storm came up fast. I don't think the
horse was ready for it. Are you okay?"

"Y . . . yes." The lad was feeling all over his body
just to ensure the answer he gave was right.

"Here's your hat." The lad took it and, brushing his wet
hair back, donned the hat. That kept the rain out of his
face.

"Thank you . . .Tim. I'll be fine now."

With that Tim disappeared as if he had not ever been
there.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

naugurate: What is the reason we say we "Inaugurate" a man
when he is installed in office?

The term is from the Latin inaugurare which means "to take
omens from the flight of birds". No Roman official was
installed without the approval of the birds.

HA! HA! HA!

Jane had a system for labeling homemade freezer meals.

She would carefully note in large clear letters, "Meatloaf"
or "Pot Roast" or "Steak and Vegetables" or "Chicken and
Dumplings" or "Beef Pot Pie."

Everyday when she asked her husband what he wanted for
dinner, he never asked for any of those meals. She decided
to stock the freezer with his various requests. What he
really likes.

In Jane's freezer now you'll see a whole new set of labels.
You'll find dinners with neat little tags that say:
"Whatever," "Anything," "I Don't Know," "I Don't Care,"
"Something Good," or "Food."

No more frustration for Jane because no matter what her
husband replies when she asks him what he wants for dinner,
it's there waiting.
