TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

How fast can sled dogs run?

If I never cut my hair, how long would it grow?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Is it true that the Iditarod race commemorates an historic
medical run?

The race really commemorates the whole history of the
Iditarod Trail, but the 1925 Serum Run to Nome is a big part
of that history. In 1925 a case of diphtheria was discovered
in Nome, Alaska, and it was decided that the residents of
Nome needed to be inoculated with antitoxin serum to avoid
an epidemic. Unfortunately, the only available serum was far
away, in Anchorage, and the nasty weather made it dangerous
to send the serum by plane. It was decided that the serum
would be sent via train to the town of Nenana and then
transported via a series of dog sled teams to Nome, almost
seven hundred miles away. The precious serum was relayed
from team to team and transported across the frozen ice of
the Bering Sea in just over five days! Drivers endured
blizzards, freezing cold temperatures, and dangerous
passages to get the serum to Nome.

Is it true that dog sled drivers start their dogs off by
yelling, "Mush!"?

Only in the movies. "Mush" is a corruption of the French
word "marchon," which means to move. While it's true that
dog sled drivers are called mushers, they don't yell "Mush."
The basic commands for the lead dogs are "gee" (turn right),
"haw" (turn left), "on by" (pass or go straight), and
"whoa." To start the team, mushers generally say "hike,
okay, or let's go!"

Here's To Think On ...

Think Before You Act!

A golfer is playing a round of golf with his buddies.
On the sixth hole, a hole over water, he proceeds to
flub nine balls into the water. Frustrated over his poor
golfing ability, and about ready to hit somebody, he
heaves his golf clubs into the water, and begins to
walk off the course.

Then all of a sudden he turns around and jumps
back in the lake, his buddies apparently thinking he
is going to retrieve his clubs. When he comes out
of the water he doesn't have his clubs and begins
to walk off the course.

Then one of his buddies asks, 'Why did you jump
into the lake?'

And he said, "I left my car keys in the bag."

Anger can have you making mistakes a clear head
would avoid.

How many times do we act out of anger only to find
we say and do things we cannot undo, and likely
hurt someone we love?

Worse yet, how many times do we act hastily, out
of anger or not, just hastily, without thinking things
through, only to find we had not properly considered
all the facts and now have ourselves in a bit of trouble?

Or how many times have you done things as a bit
of a lark, only to find consequences to be other than
what you had expected?

Sometimes doing things like this is a part of youth,
or growing up. Yet when it happens the first couple
times it should teach us to think a little more deeply
into what we are doing.

I know a woman whose life is entirely impulsive. She
always goes with the first thought she has and never,
not even for a second, gives thought to the what if's,
or the consequences of her actions. The result is she
is always broke. She hurts many of those close to her,
and her reputation is that of being somewhat of a dunce.

It is too bad she has to live her life this way, when
with ease she could simply ask herself the second
question "If I do this what do I have to give up, and
who besides me does this affect?" If she did nothing
more than that the answers to her question would
undoubtedly cause her to rethink her decisions at
least half the time. Life would be much better for her.

So, too, with you, particularly in your business. You
sometimes have to be a visionary to see past the
present hurdle, in order to make the correct decision
that will come out right for you.

Practice being a visionary. Try looking down the
road a few days or weeks to see the actual results
of your planning. Here you must be brutally honest.
You are not looking for the things you would "like"
to see. You are looking for the things you know will
most likely happen. Practice that, to your
good fortune.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 8 of 31

The extent, location and severity of an infection is,
of course, important, but so is its duration. In the
aforementioned example, such a gum infection would be
considered to be both acute and chronic. Meaning it was
serious and would be active 24 hours a day, 365 days
per year; for as long as the gum disease was present.
Unfortunately, for tens of millions of people, this
infection could be present for many, many
years—progressively getting worse. It should no longer
be difficult to imagine the stress this infection
places on the immune system.

Another important fact to consider is that dental
infection may not always be obvious or easily
identified. Often, there is no pain or overt symptoms.
It is an insidious disease and, if left untreated, will
continue to destroy both gum tissue and the underlying
bone. But whether you are consciously aware of it or
not, this infection poses a serious threat to your
overall health.

Dental Disease and Its Relationship to Other Diseases
An increasing number of studies demonstrate the
relationship between dental disease and other diseases
of the body. I’ve provided a brief description of the
etiology (underlying cause) of dental disease and its
damaging effects. The following section will provide
documentation that conclusively links dental disease to
other serious and life-threatening diseases.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

Ben had been called to work on mud flows that were
burying whole towns in southeast Asia.

When he arrived there were hundreds of workers. He
looked around to see where he could start. He couldn't see
anything that was not already being attended to, yet he had
a terrible gnawing within him he was needed.

He stopped where he was, closed his eyes, and
concentrated. He was impressed that there were people
trapped in a cave up on a hill. The rains had fallen now so
hard and for so long, there was no longer a trail for them
to exit the cave and return home. Worse, there was mud
falling down in front of the cave from above them. They had
no real way of knowing what would be next.

Officials were concerned the whole side of the mountain
was going to let loose and come down. If that happened then
this area where they were working would be overcome with
deep and powerful mud flows.

Ben went to the cave. Inside there were five people.
Three adults and two children. All were getting cold. Ben
noticed there were leaks in the cave and he instinctively
knew the cave was about to collapse.

He asked for everyone to hold hands and do not let go
until he said. He extracted that agreement from each
individual. When they all said yes, he had them join hands
and in that instant they were outside the cave.

Just as they evacuated the cave the whole mountain let
go. Where they had been was now washing down the hill.

They were suspended in space and looking down upon the
event as it happened. What a mess. Trees were being smashed
and uprooted. Boulders were being swept away as if they were
made of styrofoam. The earth that once was pretty, scenic
mountainside was sliding down the hill, churning, turning
over and had all the appearance of a boiling pot of stew. It
was down the mountain in mere seconds.

The force, and weight, of the mass of mud and water was
huge. It caused a backlog of build up and slowly it was
making it's way down the already prepared mud bed. The mud
had no trouble moving down into the valley toward the towns
that were downstream. It traveled at nearly 20 miles an hour
and it's force was unstoppable.

Ben took his charges to a town that was situated on
another part of the island. There were no slides there. The
slides were happening on the windward side of the island
where the clouds were releasing the rain.

Once Ben had everyone to safety he left them and
instantly moved over to the area worst hit with mud. There
were many who were already drowned. Many were sitting on
rooftops on houses that were beginning to move because of
the weight of mud. That condition would not last. As the
houses moved they would tip over and the mud would simply
crush them along the way.

Ben was thankful for all the workers there who lived by
higher law. Many came in to save those who were in immediate
danger. Now, of course, they were having to worry about
towns further downstream. The mud would arrive there rather
soon.

Ben and about fifty others moved downstream. The area
where Ben was was a beautiful area, pristine almost. Yet the
mud was coming and the residents had to leave.

The rain had been hard and strong now for long enough
the people were aware mud was on it's way. None had to be
persuaded. They ran into their houses to grab what little
they could, things like photographs of family members,
memorabilia of all kinds, pets, dresses, favorite things.

There were vehicles that had come in from around the
island. People were being packed up any way they could. Some
sat on roof tops of vehicles. Many were riding by clinging
stubbornly onto the sides of truck boxes already full of
people. The race was on.

Vehicle after vehicle left the towns, all trying to get
around the mountains to the other side of the island. Yet
there were mudslides all over the island. That they were
able to get through to get here to rescue people was no
guarantee they would be able to return home. Highways and
roadways could be blocked now. But there were no other
choices. They had to do what they could because for certain
there was mud on its way into these lowland villages.

Aircraft were operational as well. Helicopters too. They
couldn't take as many as the busses and trucks but they
helped.

Ben and several others who were helping decided to go
down the road some distance. They knew there was going to be
a slide. They had two people down on the road to stop
traffic and several of them caused the slide to start. Where
they were it took out half the mountain.

They caused the slide to move right over the highway and
further down to the ocean. They caused it to be complete,
that there would be no more mud, and they caused it to go
right over the road, so the road was free of mud. When all
that was done they signaled their people to let traffic
continue once more. The cars and trucks would now be safe.

The group decided to leave two people to monitor the
condition in case other mountains were going to let loose.

By now the mud had reached the lower levels. The towns
down at these levels were now being destroyed. Fortunately
most of the people got out safely. The destruction was
horrendous. Nothing was left of the towns the slides hit,
nothing.

Ben was amazed at the power of nature. When things like
this began nothing could stop it.

India Rubber: Where did "India rubber" get this name?

The same mistake that led Columbus to think he had reached
India when he discovered America let to people's calling
rubber "India rubber". Columbus reported that on his second
voyage he found the natives of Haiti playing a game with
"balls made from the gum of a tree".
