TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

Why do we get the flu most often in winter?
Where do we get the word "khaki"?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What is the difference between influenza and a cold?
Influenza, like the common cold, is a viral respiratory
infection, and many of the symptoms - like runny nose,
cough, and sore throat - are similar. However, influenza is
much more severe, characterized by the sudden onset of
fever, chills, muscle aches, headache, loss of appetite, and
extreme fatigue. Flu can lead to serious complications,
especially in the very young and the very old, including
bronchitis, viral or bacterial pneumonia, and even death.
Most people who get influenza recover in one to two weeks.
What is "stomach flu"?
Although nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can sometimes
accompany influenza infection, particularly in kids, these
symptoms are rarely the primary ones. The term "stomach flu"
is a misnomer that is sometimes used to describe
gastrointestinal illnesses caused by organisms other than
the influenza virus.

Google Unveils Page Creator
GOOGLE THURSDAY RELEASED GOOGLE PAGE Creator, a Web-based,
what-you-see-is-what-you-get HTML editing tool, which allows
users to create their own Web pages, complete with a free
hosting service and 100 megabytes of storage. Sign-ups to
the service, according a Google spokeswoman, were halted
midday Thursday due to "extraordinary demand," which led the
site to reach its pre-determined number of users earlier
than expected. The service is hosted on Google Labs, a sort
of pre-beta area for nascent Google services--and, according
to the spokeswoman, signups will resume shortly. -- Shankar

San Francisco Mulls Two-Tiered WiFi
by Wendy Davis
GOOGLE THIS WEEK FLESHED OUT its offer to provide free
wireless broadband in San Francisco. The company has
partnered with EarthLink to jointly propose a layered system
that offers lower-speed WiFi, of up to 300 kilobits per
second, for free--and a faster service, one megabit per
second, for around $20 a month.
The dual-tier model for broadband, with fees based on
connection speed, appears to be gaining ground. Jupiter
Research analyst Ina Sebastian, who helped author a report
about WiFi last year, said it's not unusual for
municipalities to arrange for dual-tier WiFi--especially in
rural areas, where the same provider might serve homes and
businesses.
So far, however, few consumers have paid for WiFi access. A
Jupiter Research report last year found that 20 percent of
online users had connected via WiFi hotspots, but that just
9 percent of online users had paid for the service.
Last summer, DSL providers began a big push to roll out
tiered service for consumers. SBC Communications and Verizon
said they would begin offering broadband service with Yahoo
for around $15 a month, but at relatively slow speeds of
around 750 kilobits per second.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson
The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 12 of 31
In addition to the well-known association between
abnormal levels of lipid (fat) in the blood and the
narrowing and hardening of the arteries
(atherosclerosis), researchers also found an
association between elevated total dental index (TDI)
and atherosclerosis, independent of dietary habits.
This suggests that factors associated with gum disease
may contribute to the cause of atherosclerosis and
chronic infections could affect the development of
hardening of the arteries by toxic mechanisms.
In a more recent study, researchers examined the
relationship between stroke and chronic and recurrent
infection. They found that chronic bronchial infection
and poor dental health (primarily from chronic gum
infection) may be associated with an increased risk for
stroke (cerebrovascular ischemia). The results of this
study suggest that, independent from established
vascular risk factors, symptoms of recurrent or chronic
bronchitis and poor dental health may be associated
with stroke.
Gum disease and root canal infections appear as main
contributors in the role of chronic dental disease.
Interestingly, infections in the jaw bone resulting
from an infected root canal (caused by decay) are also
a factor in stroke risk. This is another example of how
decay can play a role, however indirectly, in heart
disease.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

"So I suppose one's only protection against a future
like that is to go inside and seek your Maker. Nothing is
more important than finding your Maker."
"Alewka, honey, it is far more serious than that. I mean
nothing is more important, nothing, Nothing, NOTHING --
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING is more important than going inside and
communicating with your Maker. Not one thing man does, not
one, is more important than this. Some think I'm crazy but
those who think that way are all wrapped up in their own
ego, thinking that what they do is more important. One day
they will see."
"Enough of that Sam. Let's find something more enjoyable
to talk about."
"I think you're right, Ben. This can be a downer
subject. I'll bet Helen wouldn't like it. Where is Helen
anyway?"
"She had a few chores to do before she came over. She'll
be here in a bit."
"Good. Alewka, honey, maybe we should celebrate rather
than cogitate. What can we celebrate today?"
"Sam Henry, we have lots to celebrate - life, for one
thing. We have a wonderful family, terrific friends, fine
grandchildren and another will be here shortly. Life is
pretty good."
"Yes, you're right. Ben, how would you like a little
Irish Cream in that coffee, or maybe some bourbon?"
"That would be nice, Sam."
"This is such a nice day. We don't often get days like
this that don't cloud up in the afternoon, or the wind comes
up or something changes. This is nice. You know, that is one
thing that's nice down at Eloise's. In that village all
surrounded by jungle, yet with that outlet to the beach and
the river, those folks picked a terrific spot. They never
get too windblown yet they can get out in the sun. They are
both protected from the elements and have wide open spaces
all at the same time. They chose well."
"They sure did, Alewka. That has to be heaven on earth.
It's a beautiful spot. Helen and I think of it often. We
always enjoy going down there, and the villagers are such
terrific people. Actually, maybe we should go down there
today? We have nothing doing today and we haven't been there
for quite a while." Ben Striker was doing some thinking out
loud.
"Well, honey, I think that would be a great idea."
Helen, Ben's wife had suddenly appeared on the deck and had
heard Ben's last sentence.
"Hi, Helen. How are you today?"
"I'm fine, Alewka. What about going down to see Eloise?
Hi, Sam."
"Well, we just saw her and the kids. They were just up
here a couple days ago."
"Oh, come now. You mean you're going to let a little
thing like that keep you from visiting the rest of the folks
at the village. How long has it been since you saw Mae
Wiley?"
"You know, Sam, Helen is right. Let's go down there. It
would be good to see Mae, David and Pam, Boolanga and the
family again. We haven't been to the village in a while."
Sam looked at his wife and saw her to be serious. "Okay,
Let's go." He stood up and vanished, just like that.
Alewka, Ben and Helen were left there looking at one
another.
"That big galoot. Now I have to chase him. You guys
ready?" Alewka had a big smile on her face. This was not the
first time Same responded instantaneously. He was always
full of tricks. He made her life interesting every day. She
loved him for it.
In a fraction of a second they were standing on the
beach by the Amazon river, at Eloise's village.
"Hi Grandma. How are you?"
"I'm fine Sammy. I'm looking for your Granddad."
"Yeah. He said you would be coming and looking for him.
I'm not supposed to tell you where he is."
"Oh? Your Grandpa is playing games with me is he? Well
I'll just have to teach him a thing or two. Thanks Sammy."
Sammy had a sparkle in his eye. He loved it when Grandma
and Grandpa played with each other. It was always fun and
always filled with love. He laughed. They were at it again.
Alewka actually knew where Sam was. At that instant she
vanished and reappeared behind Sam who was trying to hide,
crouched down behind Eloise's and Maz's hut.
"You waiting for me?"
"Oh! Honey. You scared me. I didn't think you would find
me so fast." Sam stood, laughing. He put his arms around her
and gave her a big hug. He loved this woman deeply and he
liked teasing and playing games with her.
"Sam Henry, you're just a big tease."
"Ahh, yes, honey, but you love every minute of it don't
you?"
Alewka smiled. He was right. She did love it when he was
playing with her. "Come. Let's go find our guests."
"Guests? Ben and Helen are no longer guests. They're one
of us. They know their way around. Let's go see Mae."
"Oh, okay."
The pair of them walked out front of the hut. Eloise was
there along with AliAnn.
"Hi, you two. We figured you were up to your games
again, didn't we honey?"
"Yes, Mom. Grandpa's just a big tease."

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Kibitzxer: Where did the "kibitzer" get that name?
The term comes, via Yiddish, from the German Kiebitz -
meaning a peewit or lapwing - and the allusion is to such a
bird's sitting on one's shoulder while one plays cards. "The
note of a peewit" says John Burroughs "Is a human sigh and
the bird's two-syllable call frequently conveys that idea.
Often the bird seems to be saying "Dear me" in a tone which
is plaintive and resigned rather than a petulant and
impatient.

HA! HA! HA!
The day after his wife disappeared in a kayaking accident,
an Anchorage man answered the door to find two grim-faced
Alaska State Troopers.
"We're sorry Mr. Wilkens, but we have some information about
your wife," said one trooper.
"Tell me! Did you find her?" Wilkens shouted. The troopers
looked at each other.
One said, "We have some bad news, some good news, and some
really great news. Which do you want to hear first?"
Fearing the worst, an ashen Mr. Wilkens said, "Give me the
bad news first."
The trooper said, "I'm sorry to tell you, sir, but this
morning we found your wife's body in Kachemak Bay."
"Oh my God!" exclaimed Wilkens. Swallowing hard, he asked,
"What's the good news?"
The trooper continued. "When we pulled her up she had two 25
pound king crabs and six good-size Dungeness crabs on her."
Stunned, Mr. Wilkens demanded, "If that's the good news,
what's the great news?"
The trooper said, "We're going to pull her up again
tomorrow."
