TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

Who developed khaki?
When did camouflage become standard military practice?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Why do we get the flu most often in winter?
Influenza, like the common cold, is caused by a virus. It is
not caused by being cold or by being out in the cold.
However, in the US and other countries with a temperate
climate, there is a sharp rise in the incidence of influenza
cases in the winter. Scientists do not know exactly why,
though they can point to one significant factor: influenza
is spread largely by droplet infection. People who have the
virus cough and sneeze and the virus becomes airborne and is
inhaled by the next sufferer. Cold and wet weather
encourages people to spend more time in enclosed areas,
crowded together, where they can more easily pass the virus.
In equatorial countries, where it doesn't get very cold,
influenza occurs year-round but most cases occur during the
monsoon or rainy season.
Where do we get the word "khaki"?
The light-yellowish brown cloth, used generally for military
uniforms , gets its name from the Persian word "khak,"
meaning "dust" or "ashes." The word "khaki" can be used to
refer to the color, the cloth, or the garment made from the
cloth.

All Relationships Are Critical
Red Skelton's Successful Marriage Tips:
-Two times a week, we go to a nice restaurant, have a
little beverage, good food and companionship. She
goes on Tuesdays, I go on Fridays.
-We also sleep in separate beds. Hers is in Ontario
and mine is in Tucson.
-I take my wife everywhere, but she keeps finding
her way back. I asked my wife where she wanted
to go for our anniversary. "Somewhere I haven't
been in a long time!" she said. So I suggested
the kitchen.
-We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops.
-She has an electric blender, electric toaster and
electric bread maker. She said "There are too many
gadgets and no place to sit down!"
So I bought her an electric chair.
-My wife told me the car wasn't running well because
there was water in the carburetor. I asked where the
car was; she told me "In the lake."
-She got a mud pack and looked great for two days.
Then the mud fell off.
-She ran after the garbage truck, yelling "Am I too
late for the garbage?" The driver said "No, jump in!"
-Remember: Marriage is the number one cause
of divorce.
-I married Miss Right. I just didn't know her first
name was Always.
-I haven't spoken to my wife in 18 months. I don't
like to interrupt
her.
-The last fight was my fault. My wife asked
"What's on the TV?" I said "Dust!"
Red Skelton became one of the world's most popular
comedians. He did so because not only was his
material clean, but it spoke of conditions most folks
are aware of, like the joke above. There he is
speaking of one of our most important relationships,
marriage, or the relationship with our significant other.
Very nearly all of us will have a look at this joke and
have a laugh. Only he, on stage, could get away
with saying these things. Maybe that's what makes
it funny. If we tried it we'd get into trouble.
Yet he points out another situation, very subtle, most
of us overlook. All relationships are critical. That's
right! It is important to treat all relationships with all
people, including our enemies, with love. It is wise
to treat all other living things as if they were the most
important thing in our lives at that moment you are
in front of them.
Why, you might ask? Because it reveals your
innermost thoughts, that's why. The more you practice
being in love with everyone and everything you meet,
the more bounty, plenty and happiness comes your
way. Fail to practice this one thing and life is just
like most folks, a struggle.
One of the most successful people I know, is humble
enough to stop what he is doing, right in the middle
of a task, and will give you a hand, even without you
asking. I have always admired that man. Apparently
so does everyone around him for all boast about him,
customers keep coming back to him, staff would do
anything for him and his business just keeps
getting better.
All of this happens because this man looks at all
relationships as if they are the most important thing
to him at that and any moment.
The more you practice the more bountiful your life
will become. The more you practice the more genuine
those feelings become on the inside. The more you
practice the easier it becomes. The more you practice
the more others take note of you. The more you
practice the more nice things you notice about
others. The more you practice the more others
notice the nice things about you. The more you
practice the more people want to be around you.
The more you practice the more bounty and
happiness comes your way.
Try it!

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 13 of 31
Diabetes It has long been known that diabetes affects
periodontal disease. New studies show that the reverse
is also true: periodontal disease can affect diabetes.
In an important work by B.L. Mealy, the author cites
numerous studies that indicate that the presence and
severity of gum disease can increase the risk of poor
glycemic control. One study clearly illustrates the
relationship between gum disease and diabetes. When
compared to diabetic patients with minimal gum disease,
those with severe gum disease have a significantly
greater prevalence of protein in the urine
(proteinuria) and a greater number of cardiovascular
complications. These include stroke and transient
ischemic attack (TIA)a stroke-like event lasting
minutes, or hours, that occurs when the brain is
deprived of oxygen-rich blood but in which the effects
wear off completely after resumption of blood-flow. The
study concludes that the association between disease
related to diabetes and severe periodontitis in
diabetic individuals requires attention and close
cooperation between the physician and dentist.
Several other studies reported by Mealy state that
treating periodontal complications implicated in
diabetes may actually improve metabolic control of the
underlying diabetic disease state.
These studies are important for at least two reasons.
First, periodontal disease has been shown to affect the
control of diabetes. Second, the American Heart
Association now includes diabetes as a major risk
factor for heart disease, ranking it with high blood
pressure and smoking. Thus, we witness an unfortunate
connection: diabetes is on the rise; it is a risk
factor for heart disease; and periodontal disease is a
risk factor in both.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure

"Oh, yeah?" Sam ran after her. AliAnn took off laughing.
She knew he was going to chase her and she, too, loved it.
She knew just what buttons to push in her Grandpa to get him
going. The pair of them had a wonderful relationship.
AliAnn ran out into the common area, heading for the
beach. She was fast, really fast. That is the way with kids
who are raised in nature. They take on some of nature's
toughness.
Sam was puffing from the exertion, but he caught her.
She was giggling and laughing so much it took away her
speed.
"Now I've got you, young lady. Now I'm going to give it
to you. I'll bet its been a long while since you had a
spanking isn't it?"
AliAnn knew her Grandad's spankings were only love taps
but like she always did she squirmed and giggled and tried
to get away.
By now half the village was out looking to see what all
the ruckus was about. All were laughing at this charade.
They had seen it before. They knew Sam and AliAnn or Sam and
Sammy often played this way.
Finally she squirmed enough to get away and the chase
was on again.
It was a good time for Sam. He loved to play with his
grandchildren. His only problem was that they were now
getting too fast for him. He even suspected they slowed down
some so he would catch them.
It was fun. The kids loved it too. Finally the chase was
over. Sam was puffing like a steam engine. AliAnn was out of
breath, too.
The village all returned to normal as the pair of them
walked back to AliAnn's hut. Her Mother and Grandmother
where there, waiting.
"So, did he catch you?"
"He always catches me, Mom, but this time I got away
again. I'm getting smarter."
"Boy! I'll say she's getting smarter. It's more of a
chore for me to catch her now." Sam was still puffing.
"Well, maybe you shouldn't try. Have you ever thought of
that?" Alewka was talking to Sam about the obvious.
She knew it was falling on deaf ears. Sam loved to chase
the kids. They loved it, too. It was a game they played that
allowed them to show each other they loved one another.
Alewka knew that as the years went by they would find other
ways. But the truth was, even she enjoyed watching the game.
"You ready, honey? Let's go see Mae."
"Sam Henry, I was ready when we arrived."
"Okay. I got sidetracked. Want to come Tinkerbell? We're
just going over to see Mae. We haven't seen her for months."
"I'll be over in a bit, Daddy. I have some chores to
finish here first."
"Okay. See you shortly."
With that Sam and Alewka began walking over to see Mae.
All along the way they stopped to say hi to friends who
wanted to talk. Eventually they got to Mae's and when they
did Eloise was already there.
"Gosh! I guess we took quite a while getting here. You
beat us to it." Sam was addressing Eloise.
"Hi, Mae. How are you? My, look at you all tanned up and
a smile on your face that doesn't quite. Mae, if I were 20
years younger I'd take up courting you."
Mae blushed. "Oh, Sam Henry, you say that to all the
girls." They laughed.
"Well, what I was saying, Mae, is that you look
wonderful. Living like this must be good for you. It works
for Susan, too. The pair of you look great."
"Thanks, Sam. I'll take that as a compliment."
"He's right, Mae. You look wonderful. You most certainly
are not the woman I knew back in Pinehill. You remember? The
one who was wondering whether she should even come down here
or not?"
"Oh, my gosh. That was so long ago and so much water has
gone under the bridge since then. It's fantastic how life
changes, isn't it Alewka? It is so wonderful. Yes, Sam,
Alewka, I feel great. I love life and want more of it.
Living by higher law does that for you."
"Yes, Mae. It sure does. That's why we come down here to
be with the young. It seems we enjoy the energy level. So
tell us about your trip. You've been gone for quite a
while."
"I guess I have been away for a while, Sam. You know how
it's like. One gets involved with people and there are
things to do."
"Yes, Mae, I know."
"Susan and I just traveled along, walking. Everywhere we
went we met folks who became friends. They sure are
wonderful people over there in China, Sam. I think you'd
like them."
"I already know I do. I love all mankind, Mae. They are
a wonderful people. How are Riata, Amenti, Reno and the kids
at the orphanage?"
"They're fine, Sam. Since they all learned to live by
higher law they are now dispersing throughout the country.
It seems each is called when the timing is right, and they
leave. At the same time there appears to be a bunch of new
kids coming in. I don't know how they find the place but
they come. With the older kids living by higher law they are
now a big help to Riata. I think she will soon be leaving
the orphanage. There are enough there now to get the work
done."

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Lame Duck: Why is a member of Congress who has failed to be
reelected called a "lame duck"?
Wild ducks in flight fly together, their heads outstretched
in front, their legs outstretched behind. A "lame duck"
can't keep up with the flock. So too, a member of the
British Stock Exchange who couldn't meet his liabilities on
settling day couldn't keep up with the flock and was struck
off the list. From this we get our use of the term in
reference to members of Congress who fail to be reelected
and can't continue in office.

HA! HA! HA!
A minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going
to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they
were expecting for repairs to the church building.
Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist
was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last
minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play. "Here's
a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But you'll
have to think of something to play after I make the
announcement about the finances."
During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers
and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs
cost twice as much as we expected, and we need $4,000 more.
Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up."
At that moment, the substitute organist played, "The Star
Spangled Banner."
