ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
How accurate is the groundhog?
Not so good - less than chance, in fact. Approximately 90
percent of the time, Phil sees his shadow. (Hopefully, he'll
get therapy soon for that obvious depression he's
suffering.) Records indicate he's right just 39 percent of
the time. Phil and his ancestors have been doing this since
1887 in Punxsutawney.
How did Groundhog Day get started?
The tradition is associated with Candlemas Day, an old
Christian holiday commemorating the presentation of Jesus in
the Temple. On Candlemas Day, clergy in Europe would bless
candles and distribute them to the people in the dark of
winter. Candlemas Day was based on an even earlier pagan
celebration called Imbolc, which marked a milestone in the
winter (midway between winter solstice and spring equinox).
There were numerous rhymes to indicate that the weather on
that particular day was important.
For example:
If Candlemas Day is bright and clear, There'll be two
winters in the year.
The Teutons (Germans) decided that if the sun was out on
Candlemas Day, an animal would cast a shadow, predicting six
more weeks of bad weather (the "second winter"). The animal
used then was either a badger or hedgehog. But when German
settlers took the tradition with them to Pennsylvania, they
used the groundhog (a type of woodchuck), which was abundant
in the area.

France 'dims' for climate protest
The lights of Paris dimmed for five minutes on Thursday in a
nationwide "lights out" campaign, aimed at raising public
awareness over global warming.
The Eiffel Tower, lit by 20,000 bulbs, also went dark at
1955 (1855 GMT).
During the switch-off, the power grid operator RTE observed
a fall of 800 megawatts, representing just over 1% of
France's total consumption.
It comes a day before the release in Paris of a major report
warning of humanity's role in climate change.
The report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
is expected to say that climatic changes seen around the
world are "very likely" to have a human cause.
'A real issue'
Environmental campaigner Anne Briangault told the BBC that
people would like to be involved in tackling climate change
but needed advice on what they could do.
"... we are explaining they can do things, they can switch
off some lights but it's not enough. Politicians have to
make actions too," she said from the base of the Eiffel
Tower.
Some experts warned the switch-off could backfire, arguing
that more energy could be consumed because of a power spike
when lights were turned back on. However, no problems were
immediately reported.
Several other European cities also staged symbolic
blackouts. In Rome, the lights of two of its celebrated
monuments, the Colosseum and the Capitol, were turned off.
In Spain, Madrid's Puerta de Alcala arch was plunged into
darkness.
In the Greek capital, Athens, lights illuminating several
public buildings - including the parliament, city hall, and
the foreign ministry - went dark.

Health Question About
Fibromyalgia & Arthritis
PART 3 of 5
HEALTH QUESTION: Hi there, I have a question. I had an x-ray
confirming I have "degenerative lippings" in my neck. Is this
Osteoarthritis? I am 32, what can I expect to happen in the
future as I age?
(1) Will this cripple me?
(2) I also have fibromyalgia.... which is painful, but at least it isn't
degenerative!
(3) Any help you can offer in answering my questions is greatly
appreciated... as I have searched a bunch of different websites,
but none actually specify what "degenerative" lippings are.
(4) Since I have had the Fibromyalgia in my upper back, I have the
degenerative lippings, I have had constant "bloatedness"
(5) I now have a sluggish bowel, occasional swelling of my
leg calves, eyes sore & swollen, jaw aches, inflamation in
my shoulders, neck & upper back. I never sleep well, wake
sore and unrefreshed. I feel like I am 90
(6)! Thanks so much for you're time.
Now let's look at Fibromyalgia. Is this normal aging or another
degenerative condition? Medline defines Fibromyalgia is a
"common condition characterized by widespread pain in joints,
muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues. Some other problems
commonly linked with fibromyalgia include fatigue, morning
stiffness, sleep problems, headaches, numbness in hands and
feet, depression, and anxiety. Fibromyalgia can develop on its
own, or secondary to other musculo-skeletal conditions, such as
rheumatoid arthritis, or systemic lupus. Does this sound like
our reader's situation? " (So if our "hockey player has
arthritis, he would have very achy joints, but would have some
energy to play. If (s)he had Fibromyalgia, they would have
tremendous difficulty just getting out of bed or even being
motivated to play anything!)
Here we have a condition mainly to do with soft tissues, but
also involving the joints. And arthritis has been mentioned in
relation to Fibromyalgia. That would be mainly the bone tissue
connection.
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000427.htm#Definition
I quote the reader "I also have fibromyalgia.... which is
painful, but at least it isn't degenerative!" (3) Does this
sound like an abnormal condition like degeneration or a normal
"aging" process? Does everyone get this as they get older? No.
So it is a degenerative condition.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Yep! Man Did It!
I have read everything I can get my hands on regarding this
“report” world scientists are supposed to be turning out
today, Friday, Feb 2/07.
From what I can glean the report is supposed to be hyper
conservative and still forecasts bad things for this
century. It makes the claim that man is “very likely” the
cause of such accelerated global warming.
They apparently thought long and hard over the use of that
term, “very likely”. It was a committee decision and had to
have approval of all members of the group. The end meaning
is that we are the cause of global warming, yes the climate
changes are here and going to get worse and yes, our
governments have to do something about it.
It will be interesting to watch. I notice today, also, there
are billions being invested in biofuel plants in spite of
the fact they inject enormous amounts of carbon dioxide into
the atmosphere, give less fuel mileage and doesn’t take into
account it is cutting into our food production.
We have for over a year now been unable to produce enough
food to feed every human on the planet. Yet the population
is increasing at near 8 million per month ( that’s 1 billion
new souls every 12 years). Food prices will increase to the
point where we are purchasing nothing else and businesses
and economies will collapse like a house of cards.
Still, I see businesses and governments carrying on as if
there was nothing happening. You can bet that attitude will
come back to bite us.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Table d'Hote: Why do we call a fixed price meal a "table
d'hote"?
The term is French and literally means a "table of the
host." during the Middle Ages almost all public eating
places were operated on what is now called the American
plan. guests sat at the "table of the host", took whatever
was offered and had to pay for the entire meal no matter
what they ate. And so, "table d;hote" came to signigy "a
complete meal at a fixed price."

Rev. Dr. Jordan was anxious about his son's college examination
and requested him to telegraph the results.
The boy sent the following telegram, "Hymn 342, fifth verse,
last two lines."
Looking it up in the church hymnal, the father found these
words, "Sorrow vanquished, labor ended, Jordan passed."
