Who writes "Dear Abby" now?
"Dear Abby" is now written by Jeanne Phillips, the daughter
of Pauline Phillips, or "Abigail Van Buren." Until recently,
the mother-daughter duo were writing the column together and
had been sharing the writing since 1987. Jeanne began taking
sole credit in 2002. The original "Abby" has been diagnosed
with Alzheimer's disease, the family revealed last year.
Is it true that a whole town was recently sold on eBay?
Yes. Bridgeville, California (zip code 95526), was bought on
the internet auction site for $1.78 million by an
unidentified southern California man. The remote 82-acre
town, with a current population of 25, was described by its
sellers as a "fixer-upper." The family that sold the town,
the Lapples, bought it for $150,000 in 1972.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW™ ... with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler

Mountain Climbing Over Molehills
Someone has said that the greatest cause of ulcers is
mountain-climbing over mole-hills! Is that the way you get
your exercise? Many folks allow themselves to be thrown
off course by minor or imaginary threats. Often they interpret
these as life-or-death, or do-or-die situations. They put so
much energy into their worries that there is none available
for progress. Some even believe that worrying demonstrates
caring. This is misguided, too.
The use you make of your energy is your choice. Simply use it
consciously and constructively. Worry is neither.
Bertrand Russell, philosopher and mathematician, tells of a
technique he used on himself to calm down his worries and
excessive negative excitement: "When some misfortune
threatens, consider seriously and deliberately what is the
very worst that could possibly happen. Having looked this
possible misfortune in the face, give yourself sound reasons
for thinking that after all it would be no such very terrible
disaster. Such reasons always exist, since at the worst,
nothing that happens to oneself has any cosmic importance.
When you have looked for some time steadily at the worst
possibility and have said to yourself with real conviction,
'Well, after all, that would not matter so very much,' you
will find that your worry diminishes to a quite extraordinary
extent. It may be necessary to repeat the process a few times,
but in the end, if you have shirked nothing in facing the
worse possible issue, you will find that your worry disappears
altogether and is replaced by a kind of exhilaration." Now
that seems worth having, doesn't it? Exhilaration brings
energy to push through difficulties and level mountains as
well as mole-hills.
This strategy for approaching your concerns can help you to
maintain an aggressive, goal-directed, self-determining
attitude even in the presence of very real and serious threats
and dangers. Denial is not advocated! Positive action is!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - by Karin Henderson
Health Question On Positioning
PART 1 of 4
I received a question about positioning from a reader quite a
while ago. I sensed it had to do with possible litigation, so I
won't include all the factors. But it was unique.
And I thought it would bring out some very different kind of
"thinking". In essence, the patient was depressed and in the
local hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for observation.
This is a fairly routine procedure. Most small and medium size
hospitals have ICUs, but some don't have any psychiatric units
where this could also be done. (And in my mind, more
appropriately.)
I was asked if anyone had a responsibility to make sure the
person was turned to prevent tissue damage. In my response, as I
always do in this column, I cautioned against using this
information for any other purpose than education. Please respect
my wish.
Here is some of my thinking. I knew the patient was depressed.
But they were "otherwise healthy". However, there was also a
concern about pressure on the body and injuries at the wrist and
ankles. This could mean that the person is restrained. That
would then be done at ankles and or wrists. But if the person
was that agitated, positioning would not probably be an issue,
unless other problems arose.)
Healthy people don't need to be turned unless they have some
kind of medical problem that prevents them from turning
naturally in bed. Most of us turn automatically during sleep.
Healthy patients don't get wedged between railings and
mattresses. They will wake up and move themselves.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

China More Willing To Be Open About Climate Change
The Chinese newspaper The China Daily is reporting that
behind the scenes China is, and has been, preparing a
comprehensive policy dealing with global warming.
China expects to be the world’s worst contributor by the
year 2010 if they don’t do something now to control
emissions.
They participated in the IPCC report and their ministries
and agencies are well versed in the matter.
Part of China’s problem, as it is really for the rest of the
world too, is that of finding a way to control emissions
while still promoting growth. All countries are looking for
a way to control emissions while still maintaining healthy
robust economies.
Part of the problem in doing that is that whatever they come
up with they will still be contributing to greenhouse gas
emissions.
While it is virtually impossible for governments to do
anything about the matter there appears to be a noticeable
absence of recognition over the point that any more - ANY
MORE - emissions, however small, contributes to the problem,
so any discussion about reducing is virtually pointless and
only a cosmetic policy to appease the masses.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Wac: How did the "Wacs" come to be called that?
From the initials of their full name - "Women's Army Corps."
Originally, when their official title was "Women's Auxiliary
army corps," they were known as "Waacs".

HA! HA! HA!
I'm much too young to die!
A prominent young attorney was on his way to court to begin
arguments on a complex lawsuit when he suddenly found
himself at the Gates of Heaven.
St. Peter started to escort him inside, when he began to
protest that his untimely death had to be some sort of
mistake. "I'm much too young to die! I'm only 35!"
St. Peter agreed that 35 did seem to be a bit young to be
entering the pearly gates, and agreed to check on his case.
After investigating, he told the attorney, "I'm afraid that
there is no mistake my son...
We verified your age on the basis of the number of hours
you've billed to your clients, and according to that, you're
at least 108 years old!"
