What does "orangutan" mean?

Is it true that static electricity can cause fires at the

ANSWERS TO LAST TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Have any other animals been shown to transmit culture?

Chimpanzees also have been shown to teach unique behaviors
to other chimps in their groups. So far, though, scientists
believe chimpanzees, humans, and (now) orangutans are the
only animals to do this.

Do orangutans actually sleep in trees?

Yes. Even though an adult male orangutan can weigh as much
as 220 pounds, the apes spend most of their time in the
trees. They bend branches down to form comfortable
"mattresses" of twigs and leaves. How they make their beds
is determined by culture. Some groups build two-story nests,
or "bunk beds" and sleep in the lower portion to protect
themselves from rain. Other groups build one story beds, but
add a thatched roof.

STRANGE BITS AND PIECES!

Iceberg lettuce, which is also called "head lettuce" was
called "crisphead" until the 1920's. The name was changed
to iceberg lettuce because when the lettuce was being
shipped by California growers they would put lots of ice
underneath the lettuce to keep it crisp.

'Doomsday' vault design unveiled
By Mark Kinver
Science and nature reporter, BBC News

The final design for a "doomsday" vault that will house
seeds from all known varieties of food crops has been
unveiled by the Norwegian government.

The Svalbard International Seed Vault will be built into a
mountainside on a remote island near the North Pole.

The vault aims to safeguard the world's agriculture from
future catastrophes, such as nuclear war, asteroid strikes
and climate change.

Construction begins in March, and the seed bank is scheduled
to open in 2008.

The Norwegian government is paying the $5m (£2.5m)
construction costs of the vault, which will have enough
space to house three million seed samples.

The collection and maintenance of the collection is being
organised by the Global Crop Diversity Trust, which has
responsibility of ensuring the "conservation of crop
diversity in perpetuity".

"We want a safety net because we do not want to take too
many chances with crop biodiversity," said Cary Fowler, the
Trust's executive director.

"Can you imagine an effective, efficient, sustainable
response to climate change, water shortages, food security
issues without what is going to go in the vault - it is the
raw material of agriculture.

Future proof

The seed vault will be built 120m (364ft) inside a mountain
on Spitsbergen, one of four islands that make up Svalbard.

Dr Fowler said Svalbard, 1,000km (621 miles) north of
mainland Norway, was chosen as the location for the vault
because it was very remote and it also offered the level of
stability required for the long-term project.

"We looked very far into the future. We looked at radiation
levels inside the mountain, and we looked at the area's
geological structure," he told BBC News.

"We also modelled climate change in a drastic form 200 years
into future, which included the melting of ice sheets at the
North and South Poles, and Greenland, to make sure that this
site was above the resulting water level."

By building the vault deep inside the mountain, the
surrounding permafrost would continue to provide natural
refrigeration if the mechanical system failed, explained Dr
Fowler.

'Living Fort Knox'

The Arctic vault will act as a back-up store for a global
network of seed banks financially supported by the trust.

Dr Fowler said that a proportion of the seeds housed at
these banks would be deposited at Svalbard, which will act
as a "living Fort Knox".

Although the vault was designed to protect the specimens
from catastrophic events, he added that it could also be
used to replenish national seed banks.

"One example happened in September when a typhoon ripped
through the Philippines and destroyed its seed bank," Dr
Fowler recalled.

"The storm brought two feet of water and mud into the bank,
and that is the last thing you want in a seed bank."

Low maintenance

Once inside the vault, the samples will be stored at -18C
(0F). The length of time that seeds kept in a frozen state
maintain their ability to germinate depends on the species.

Some crops, such as peas, may only survive for 20-30 years.
Others, such as sunflowers and grain crops, are understood
to last for many decades or even hundreds of years.

Once the collection has been established at Svalbard, Dr
Fowler said the facility would operate with very little
human intervention.

"Somebody will go up there once every year to physically
check inside to see that everything is OK, but there will be
no full-time staff," he explained.

"If you design a facility to be used in worst-case
scenarios, then you cannot actually have too much dependency
on human beings."

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - with Karin Henderson

Health Question On Positioning
PART 4 of 4

Qualified doctors and nurses staff ICUs. All have adequate
credentials to manage special situations. As well, there are
policies and procedures that must be adhered to. But also
remember this patient is in ICU with medical staff in
attendance. So there might be additional orders from a doctor.

The staff will follow reasonable nursing measures and can
explain their actions. If the patient is potentially harmful to
themselves or someone else, the staff must exercise professional
judgement. They are expected to do what a reasonable, prudent
nurse would do.

I was asked what possible injuries could develop to wrists and
ankles. In a normal hospital bed, I can't think of any injuries
that might arise if the person is sleeping. And if they
restrained with special "tools" or equipment, these are padded
to prevent such injuries. If this is the case, there is also
additional documentation and observation required. Again, there
are policies in place and a doctor has ordered what they feel is
appropriate to keep the patient safe. This will all depend on
what obvious signs and symptoms are presented by the patient.

You might also be wondering just what happens in an operating
room or recovery room where a person is definitely unconscious.
Again the same measures apply. All limbs or pressure points are
protected and all skin surfaces are examined for any problems
pro-op and again checked post op. Any discrepancies are noted on
the patient record.

Nurses and doctors pride themselves as being "patient
advocates". They take their role of protecting their patients
very seriously.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Do They Know Things They Aren't Telling?

I find this kind of thing not unexpected. Our governments
are sure there is nothing wrong with global warming, that we
will all be alright - but just in case we are going to build
a seed vault.

Talk about contradictions, WOW! You will begin to see more
and more of this kind of thing in our near future. You can
bet, for example, that there are plans underway for food and
water deep in some facility for our government leaders.

Something else you will notice along the way will be that
federal facilities will begin to show signs of beefed up
security, including bars on windows, new steel fences, armed
guards etc. You will also begin to see that for
state/provincial facilities and municipal buildings.

The message will be that we expect things will be alright,
“BUT” just in case.

All these things will be done slowly and progressively so
you will hardly notice it. In the end all these places will
be like forts.

Expect to get fewer answers from government and to see them
placing increased security on everything.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Zany: Where did a fool get the name "zany"?

In the plays performed by the Italian commedia dell' arte -
in which the servants acted as clowns and bore the name
zani. The word "zany" was first used in English to designate
a comic performer attending on a a clown - a "stooge".

HA! HA! HA!

The general was confined to the military hospital for
treatment of a minor malady.

For almost a week he made a complete nuisance of himself,
irritating both staff and the other patients, demanding
attention and expecting his every order to be followed
immediately.

He was in a six-man ward rather than a private room, his
meals were too cold or not served to suit his taste, the
light needed to be adjusted to his demands, the nighttime
activities interfered with his rest... and on, and on.

One afternoon an orderly entered the room. "Time to take
your temperature, General."

After growling at the orderly, the general opened his mouth
to accept the thermometer.

"Sorry, General, but for this test we need your temperature
from the other end."

A whole new barrage of verbal abuse followed, but the
orderly was insistent that a rectal temperature was what the
test called for.

The general at last rolled over, bared his rear, and allowed
the orderly to proceed. The orderly then told the general,
"Stay exactly like that and don't move. I'll be back in five
minutes to check up on you" and withdrew.

An hour later, the head nurse entered the room, saw the
general with his bare rear in the air and gasped, "What's
going on here?"

"Haven't you ever seen someone having their temperature
taken?" the general barked.

"Yes I have, General, but with a daffodil?
