TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
How does a mother porcupine or hedgehog give birth to a baby
with quills?
Is it true that scientists have cloned a human?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Can porcupines really throw their quills at attackers?
Nope, that's a myth. Porcupine quills may become dislodged
onto an attacker, but the animal cannot actually "throw" the
quills. He has to be touched, or swing his tail at the
attacker and touch HIM. The quills dislodge only after
entering the flesh of the attacker. Hedgehog quills don't
come out at all. To protect itself, the hedgehog usually
tightens its muscles and curls into a ball.
Can porcupine quills kill an attacker?
It doesn't happen very often, but porcupine quills CAN cause
great damage and CAN be fatal to the attacking animal. The
quills have a hooked barb, making them difficult to pull
out. They also carry bacteria.

China to measure the Great Wall
The structure is a series of walls first linked up over
2,000 years ago
Researchers are to carry out the first detailed survey of
the Great Wall of China to establish just how long the
ancient barricade is, Xinhua reports.
Along with checking its dimensions the four-year study,
which starts in May, will map the wall's exact route.
And it will check the condition of the fortification, built
to protect the northern border of the Chinese Empire.
The wall, the world's largest man-made structure, is
estimated at over 5,000 kilometres (3,100 miles) in length.
The study will be conducted by the State Administration of
Cultural Heritage and the State Bureau of Surveying and
Mapping in 13 provinces, regions and municipalities, the
Xinhua official news agency said.
Archaeologists had lobbied for the survey to be done to
provide scholars with an accurate understanding of the
construction.
Known to the Chinese as the "long Wall of 10,000 Li", the
Great Wall is in fact a series of walls and earthen works
begun in the 5th Century BC and first linked up under Qin
Shi Huang in about 220BC.
It was listed as a Unesco world heritage site in 1987.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - with Karin Henderson
Health Question About Tinnitus
PART 4 of 4
I want to offer one last idea and it will sound waaaay out! But
it's real and I have people very frequently tell me they have
this. And it's a pain or weird sensation when they use either
their microwave oven or talk on their cell phones. That's
originally how we learned to ask about things like that. If you
do have this annoyance, it will most likely be because you have
a weakness in that ear. A healthy normal ear would be able to
manage that irritation. So Step No.1 is to seek ways of
identifying the intruder. Step No.2 is to eliminate to the best
of your ability, the reason for using the irritant. Step No.3 is
to heal the nerve so it doesn't react to such irritants. In
other words, you are going to drain the field of water and
restore peace and harmony to the nerve. Your body will really
appreciate your hard work.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

So Close Yet So Far?
I see the Chinese are now going to survey the Great Wall.
I find this somewhat funny. We do it here all the time. We
live so close to some things while having other far more
important things to concern us that we really don’t see the
value of what is in our own backyard.
I’m glad they are doing this survey. It will be good
information for the Chinese and for the rest of the world.
The only thing wrong with it is that the Chinese, like we so
often do here, don’t really know what they have. We, on the
other hand, overlook what we have and think the Great Wall
is magnificent.
Life is like that. In India they know not the real Taj
Mahal. Tibet has lost site of the real value of their
monastery at Lhasa and the U.S., the Grand Canyon. All over
the world it is like that. Oh well!
I’m away for a ten day holiday folks. While I have caused
thePEBBLE to be issued, it will for next Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday be without this column, my perspective. I
actually left yesterday and will return a week today or a
week tomorrow, so look for my column again on the 26th.
See you then.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Calendar. How did the calendar" get its name?
From the Latin word for an interest book kept by
money-lenders - the calendarium. Interest fell due on the
calends or first day of the month. Calends itself came from
calare - the Latin verb meaning "to call" - because the
Romans used to publicly "call out" the first day of the
month.

HA! HA! HA!
Driving to the theatre a juggler was stopped by the police.
‘What are those machetes doing in your car?’ he asked.
‘They’re part of my act’, the juggler replied.
‘Really,’ said the policeman, raising an eyebrow. ‘Then let
me see you do it.’
Obligingly, the juggler got out of his car and started
throwing and catching the knives.
A man driving by slowed down to watch. ‘I’m glad I stopped
drinking,’ he muttered to himself. ‘Look at the test they
make you do now!’'
