ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

What do women (and men) want for Valentine's Day?

I'm providing a real public service with today's facts. I've
got stats direct from the National Retail Federation, which
monitors things like this. According to the NRF, over a
third of survey respondents (37.3 percent) said an evening
out was the Valentine's Day gift that most says "he or she
cares." Flowers (20.1 percent) and jewelry (18.4 percent)
ranked second and third, while receiving a greeting card
(10.8 percent) or candy (5.8 percent) rounded out the
bottom.

Who was St. Valentine and how did he become associated with
a day for lovers?

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different
saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were
martyred. According to one story, Valentine was a priest who
served during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius II.
The emperor outlawed marriage because he decided that single
men made better soldiers than married men. Valentine defied
Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers
in secret. When his actions were discovered, Claudius
ordered that he be executed. Other stories suggest that
Valentine may have been killed for helping Christians escape
Roman prisons. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St.
Valentine's Day around 498 A.D. Later, during the Middle
Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that
February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season, which
enhanced the idea that the middle of February -- Valentine's
Day -- should be a day for romance.

You Are What You Think You Are

No more 'have-to' or 'should' gifts this year. A gift that
comes from your heart rather than your guilt or pocketbook
requires thought. The gifts that touch hearts say "I know
You are what you think you are. And, what you think you are
is what you will project to the world. Have you ever
noticed that some folks get the "Hey, you" treatment while
others get the "Yes, Ma'am" respect. Why is this? Some
folks simply project confidence, poise and assurance while
others do not. It is often the case that those who present
themselves well are also the most successful.

What is the explanation for this? One word makes the
difference: thinking. Thoughts are things and thinking does
make things so. You may remember Shakespeare's words"
"There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it
so." The same is true about how you think of yourself.

You will usually receive the kind of treatment that you
think you deserve. On the other hand, you are responsible
for teaching others how to treat you. If you think you are
not good enough, you will project this and allow others to
treat you in disrespectful ways. You may resent it. It may
make you angry, however, you allow it because you may think
you deserve it at some level.

Why not do this differently? Step out with your best self
in mind. Know that you are important. If you were not
here, there would be an empty space. Take your place. Take
up your space and know that you deserve love, respect,
attention and acceptance just because you breathe. Of
course, if you persist in doing things that teach others
that this is not so, you cannot be surprised if they have a
different perception of you, can you?

How you think determines how you act. How you act in turn
determines how others react to you. It is a simple formula.
Look where it starts, though. It starts with how you think.
To gain the respect of others, you must first think you
deserve respect. The more respect you have for yourself,
the more respect others will have for you.

Self-respect is demonstrated by everything you do. Dress
well. Your appearance broadcasts how you feel about
yourself. Lift your spirits by taking time to look good.
No matter how many casual Fridays the work world allows, be
sure that you dress in a way that keeps your mind and
attitude "thinking sharp". Why do you think the armed
services pay so much attention to the details of dressing?
Stay sharp.

Your appearance talks to you and it talks to others. You
know the line: You never get a second chance to make a
first impression. First impressions last far longer than it
takes to make one! Start your day with a good impression of
yourself. You are what you think you are. What are you
projecting?

Remember: what you pay attention to expands!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - by Karin Henderson

But This Works For Me
Dealing With Needless Stress
PART 3 of 3

It may take a bit of effort and time and determination to
establish "yourself", but it's worth every ounce of your effort
and energy. I guarantee it will give you peace and lots of
confidence. You won't do this lightly or jump to conclusions. It
will come slowly, with conviction and peace. How do you do this?
It takes action and it just doesn't fall into your lap from the
sky. You have to sit quietly and think. Figure who you really
are and what works for you and what doesn't. You are perfectly
free to change once you realise something doesn't work for you.
Afterall it's about aligning you to the reason you are here. And
again, the promise holds out that "order' will come from all
this confusion. I think the biggest benefit that comes along is
the confidence and peace and inner conviction you are you.not a
great husband, or wife, or teacher, or technician, or mother or
"you". We think everyone except ourselves has it all together.
Wrong! Most are just as confused as you are, but won't either
admit it or simply don't know. They may be whizzes at their
particular jobs or professions, but they still haven't come to
terms with their own identity.

How do you recognize someone who has come to term with their own
self? They are the ones who know what they want, but allow you
to find out who you are and what you want. They are quiet and
unassuming and focussed. . They lead stress-reduced lives, with
confidence and purpose. They are generous because they have
found everyone needs to work through this in order to grow and
develop. And having worked through this themselves, they now
want to help you find the same direction, but for your path: not
theirs. They know this process needs time and encouragement and
support.

Do you have a strong desire to do something you aren't doing
right now? Examine it and see how you possibly could do it or
something similar. Follow that direction. Do some research.
Study what its leaders are doing and how they got there. Just
doing a search with a group of words in Google.com in quotation
marks is a start. It's action. It could open up a whole new
world for you. Will it work for you? No one except you will be
able to tell, but if it does, protect and defend it with your
firm conviction that this is the real you. Happy planning and
peace and confidence!

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Fall Guy: Why do we call a dupe a "fall guy"?

The word "fall" not only means to "stumble" but also to be
"lured" or "entrapped". And so we call a person a "fall guy"
who is entrapped and left to suffer the punishment while the
one who did the actual mischief escapes.

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

"When one door closes another door opens; but we so
often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed
door, that we do not see the ones which open for us."

HA! HA! HA!

Three men are at a bar, and two of the men are talking about
the control they have over their wives, while the third
remains silent.

After a while, the first two men turn to the third and ask,
"What about you? What kind of control do you have over your
wife?"

The third man turns to the first two and says, "Well, I'll
tell you, just the other day I had her on her knees."

The first two men were dumbfounded.

"Wow! What happened next?" they asked.

The third man takes a healthy swig of his beer, sighs and
mutters, "Then she started screaming, 'Get out from under
the bed and fight like a man!'"
