What other kinds of creatures have been sent into orbit?

Quite a lot of Earth creatures have ventured into space.
Besides humans, the space-faring species have included dogs,
monkeys, mice, rats, guinea pigs, cats, rabbits, quail,
pigs, bullfrogs, tortoises, snails, fruit flies, crickets,
hornets, wasps, worms, jellyfish, goldfish, minnows, newts,
and even amoebas!

Have plants been sent into space?

Yes. NASA has sent plants into orbit to see if they grow
differently in space and to understand the effects of zero
gravity on plant growth and development.

Canada’s oil industry under threat of al Qaeda attacks

Ottawa, Feb 15: Canada is "monitoring" new threats to its
oil patch after the Saudi branch of al-Qaeda called
yesterday for attacks on installations that supply oil to
the United States, a Canadian official said.

"We're aware of the threat and we're monitoring the
situation," Melissa Leclerc, spokeswoman for Public Safety
Minister Stockwell Day, told reporters.

The threat hinted that Canada, Mexico and Venezuela were
targets.

"In the long term, the United States will not need the
Middle East (for oil) or it will reduce its dependency on
it, and will be satisfied with oil from Canada, Mexico and
Venezuela," the al-Qaeda organisation in the Arabian
peninsula said.

"Oil interests in all regions (of the world) from which the
United States benefits should be hit, not only in the Middle
East," the group said in an article in its online monthly
magazine, Sawt al-Jihad (the Voice of Jihad).

Greg Stringham, vice president of the Canadian Association
of Petroleum Producers in Calgary, Canada's energy
headquarters, said oil companies were taking the threat
"very seriously" but alert levels in Canada remained low.

"It does not look like it's something new, although we're
paying good attention to it and we have heightened the
awareness among the folks that may be directly affected," he
told reporters.

"This is not one that has caused extra (security) mechanisms
to kick in ... But we want people to be aware of it so that
they can pay extra attention to what's going on around their
specific facilities," he said.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - with Karin Henderson

Understanding Medical Terminology
A Little Bit More
PART 2 of 7

I'm speaking of those long medical terms and you, of course, may
not have any idea what they mean. You know the ones...lots of
syllables and no common sense? It's all Greek or Latin to you?
In fact it's both, but it's fairly easy to figure out if you
know how to do it. I thought it would be wise to get a real
explanation of word development from a dictionary. This comes
directly from MERRIAM-WEBSTER http://www.merriam-webster.com/

"Main Entry: et·y·mol·o·gy
Etymology: Middle English ethimologie, from Latin etymologia,
from Greek, from etymon + -logia -logy ***1 : the history of a
linguistic form (as a word) shown by tracing its development
since its earliest recorded occurrence in the language where it
is found, by tracing its transmission from one language to
another, by analyzing it into its component parts, by
identifying its cognates in other languages, or by tracing it
and its cognates to a common ancestral form in an ancestral
language 2 : a branch of linguistics concerned with etymologies"
What this really means is that there is a reason for each "word"
and phrase to exist.

There are basically three parts to a term...sometimes four. Each
term can have a part called a prefix (used at the beginning of
the word), a suffix (used at the end of the word), and a root
word. A "root" word means it's the "foundation": the root...of
the entire meaning. A combining form is one or two letters to
help it to be pronounced or to flow better. A "combining form"
means it connects parts and is somewhere in the middle. Not
every medical term has all of these, but many do. Here is a
"garden" comparison. A sugar turnip has a root...the bulky thing
stuck in the ground or its seed. From the root, leaves shoot
upwards and little shoots go downwards. Each part has a purpose
to act out: same with a medical term. Water or soil would be a
combining form.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Wars And Rumors Of Wars

Terrorism by media has always been a terrorist’s weapon.
They know only too well the media will sensationalize any
and all things like that, so Al-Queda strum them like a fine
guitar.

The real problem is it works. That kind of thing sets up
worries in the minds and hearts of the readers. It likely
mobilizes certain forces to action and all in all it
occupies our minds far more than it should.

They may be planning nothing but if they say they are then
they keep us busy, consume our funds and generally disrupt
our daily life. All these things they want and it is
working.

We know that if we do nothing and they actually do what they
say they will do, then we are at fault. On the other hand
the chances of them doing anything is pretty remote when
they can get so much mileage from the press.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Halcyon Days: How did "halcyon days" come to mean a peaceful
and pleasurable period of time?

The original "halcyon days" were fifteen days in the Spring
- the seven days preceding the Vernal Equinox in March, the
day itself and the seven days following it. This is the
brooding time of the "halcyon" or kingfisher and since its
nest was supposed to float on the sea, the superstition
arose that calm weather always prevailed at this time of the
year.

HA! HA! HA!

Worried that they hadn't heard anything for days from the
widow in the apartment next door, the mother said to her
son, "Tony, would you go next door and see how Old Mrs.
Pierpoint is?"

A few minutes later, Tony returned.

"Well, is she all right?" asked the mother.

"She's fine, but she's rather annoyed with you," remarked
Tony.

"At me?" the mother exclaimed. "Whatever for?"

Tony replied, "Mrs. Pierpoint said it's none of your
business how old she is."
