TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

Was Frank Abagnale Jr. really hired by the government after
being caught?

What is he doing now?

ANSWERS TO LAST TRIVIA - - - -

What is the origin of "love" in tennis?

Why do we say "love" to indicate a score of zero in tennis?
There are several theories. One states that "love" comes
from the French "l'oeuf," meaning "egg." The idea is that
the round egg resembles a zero. Another possibility is that
the scoring term is adapted from the phrase "to play for
love of the game." That means to play for nothing, or to not
play seriously.

Did Frank Abagnale Jr. really impersonate a pilot, doctor,
and lawyer while still a teenager?

Yes, he did all that and more. During his brief criminal
career, the high-school drop-out successfully passed himself
off as a co-pilot for Pan Am, a pediatrician, a lawyer, a
sociology professor, and even an FBI agent. Abagnale didn't
just CLAIM to be these things. He actually was employed
doing them. As a lawyer, he worked for the state's attorney
general office (that's right. He worked FOR the
prosecution). As a doctor, he worked as the supervising
resident of a hospital, in charge of numerous interns and
nurses. He taught real college courses as a sociology
professor. But he didn't actually fly planes. He merely used
his co-pilot identity to fly free all over the world and to
appear credible while cashing fake Pan Am payroll checks -
among other schemes - to the tune of over $2.5 million. He
impersonated an FBI agent to quickly get back a fake check
he had passed that had his REAL name and address on it. He
did all these things before he was twenty-one and gained the
dubious honor of being the youngest person ever on the FBI's
Most Wanted list.

Another food product pulled from store shelves
Feb 23, 2007 09:41 PM Feb 23, 2007 09:41 PM

CORPUS CHRISTI - Another popular food item is now the focus
of the nationwide recall. Once again there's more empty
space tonight on the shelves at local H-E-B's. This time,
it's a well known brand of chicken breast strips, and it
follows three other recalls that have left some shoppers
confused and concerned.

The latest recall involves chicken breast strips made by
Oscar Mayer and Louis Rich. The concern is over listeriosis,
a food poisoning that can lead to flu-like symptoms. Traces
of the bacteria were found in a package made at a plant in
South Carolina.

Just like with Peter Pan Peanut Butter, H-E-B stores have
pulled the effected products off the shelves. The Peter Pan
recall has now lead to salmonella reports in 41 states
including Texas.

The jars included in the recall begin with "2111" on the
lid, and they've turned up in cabinets all over the Coastal
Bend.

There is also a recall of Earth's Best Organic Apple Barley
Baby Food because of concerns of botulism.

A recall of certain Dole cantaloupes because certain cartons
were found with salmonella also. But neither the bad baby
food nor the tainted cantaloupes are carried at local
stores, allowing shoppers to continue buying at least most
of the items they're used too buying.

Here what consumers need to know about the chicken breast
strip recall. It's for Oscar Mayer and Louis Rich products,
and now includes all sizes and flavors, previously it was
just certain varieties. You're asked to throw it out
immediately or return it to the store.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - with Karin Henderson

Understanding Medical Terminology
A Little Bit More
PART 3 of 7

Let's work through the word "tachycardia". This is where you
have a fast or rapid heart rate, measured when you "take your
pulse" or count the heartbeats by touching the outside of a
blood vessel at your wrist.
Now, in order to figure out the meaning, you go to the BACK of
the word and find the end (suffix) meaning which could be "ia",
meaning "condition of". Then go to the FRONT and get the
prefix..."tachy", meaning fast. The root word is card...meaning
heart. So this would "literally" be a condition of a fast heart,
but as a heart itself isn't fast, but rather the rate is, it's a
condition of a fast heart rate.
If this interests you, get a good dictionary and play with this.
Take some words and look at prefixes, suffixes, and the root
words, then check the meaning. You can create your own words. A
good dictionary will give you the meaning of the prefixes or
suffixes. Medline has good information.

Terminology. mailto:medterms@rr-email.com

Here is a link to get one page of common terms with their
explanations. I have included some of these terms so you can see
what you are faced with in a dictionary. It doesn't look very
organized, but it is. And the explanations are vital. Many times
you have the same word: different meanings. It's very confusing
until you really try to understand the entire process.

Please don't get too caught up in the absolute meaning here. It
takes professionals weeks to learn this. This is simply an
overview for interest.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Coming On Like A Locomotive?

Wow! What a Cover Story. What is wrong in our food
processing practices that we get this kind of thing?

First there were the bacteria scares from California
lettuce, and root crops. Now we are getting all these
recalls of food that is processed food.

I know you guys are going to think me perfectly crazy for
this idea. Yet, here it comes. I think we are going to see
much more of this kind of thing. You see, in a real
backhanded way this is the kind of thing that can happen
with this global warming thing.

Sounds nuts doesn’t it? Here is my logic. There is so much
about global warming in the media people are genuinely
becoming scared. With minds occupied this way we are finding
things going wrong at work. In the food processing industry
one of those things that can go wrong is cleanliness.

I suggest you be prepared for more of this kind of thing. As
if it isn’t bad enough that we can no longer produce enough
food to feed the world, we now have to get sloppy and turn
what food we have bad.

Please understand I am not blaming global warming. This is
not a direct result. But in it’s way it is associated
because of what the media frenzy is doing. You will see
other things, too, like this. Mistakes will happen in
transportation and we will see more accidents. Mistakes will
happen in medicine and all fields. It is a natural result of
having minds focused on things other than the task at hand.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

In at the Death: What is the origin of the term "in at the
death"?

In fox hunting it's considered very desirable to keep up
with the dogs - or at least to have arrived by the time the
treed fox is killed. Every fox hunter tries to be "in at the
death".

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

"It doesn't matter how much milk you spill as long as
you don't lose the cow." -- Harvey Mackay

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

A clergyman was walking down the street when he came upon a
group of a few boys about 10 years of age, surrounding a
dog. Concerned that the boys were hurting the animal, he
went over and asked them what they were doing.

One of the boys replied, "This dog is an old neighborhood
stray. We take him home with us sometimes, but only one of
us can take him home. So we're having a contest: whichever
one of us tells the biggest lie can take him home today."

Of course, the Reverend was shocked. "You boys shouldn't be
having a contest telling lies!" he exclaimed. He then
launched into a 10-minute sermon against lying, beginning,
"Don't you boys know it's a sin to lie?" and ending with,
"Why, when I was your age, I never told a lie."

There was complete silence for about a minute. As the
Reverend smiled with satisfaction that he'd gotten through
to them, the smallest boy gave a deep sigh. "All right," he
said, "give him the dog."
