Why would a Christian holiday be named after a
pagan goddess?
In the Christian faith, Easter celebrates the resurrection of
Christ and is the most sacred of all holy days. So why does
it carry the name of an ancient Saxon festival honoring the
goddess Eastre? You can attribute it to the work of second
century Christian missionaries eager to convert the Teutonic
tribes north of Rome to Christianity. The missionaries were
smart enough to realize that interfering too much with the
pagan tribes' established customs would make it impossible
to convert them. Instead, they quietly transformed existing
pagan practices into ceremonies that harmonized with
Christian doctrine. There was another good reason for this.
Christian converts celebrating Christian rites would be the
target among non-Christians for persecution. But if the Christian
could celebrate his rites on the same day as a major non-Christian
festival, he'd be less noticeable and less offensive to those who
didn't share his beliefs. Since the Eastre festival to celebrate
spring coincided with the time of the Christian observance
of the resurrection of Christ, it made sense to alter the Eastre
festival and make it a Christian one as converts were slowly
won over. The early name, Eastre, was eventually changed
to its modern spelling, Easter. A final indication of the antiquity
of the Easter holiday is its date. It is determined by the ancient
lunar calendar system, which places it on the first Sunday after
the first full moon on or following the Vernal Spring Equinox.
How did the Easter bunny get his start?
Back to the Saxons for the Easter Bunny. They worshipped
the goddess Eastre by the earthly symbol of a rabbit or hare.
Eventually, 18th- and 19th-century German immigrants brought
the custom of the Easter bunny to America. It was widely ignored
by other Christians until after the Civil War. (In fact, the holiday
of Easter was not widely celebrated in the US until after that time.)

See It Right!

A woman came home to find her husband in the kitchen,
shaking frantically with what looked like a wire running
from his waist towards the electric kettle. Intending to jolt
him away from the deadly current she whacked him with
a handy plank of wood by the back door, breaking his
arm in two places. Until that moment he had been happily
listening to his Walkman.
Wow! Now we need a warning label on walkmans.
"Wife might attack. Wear with caution."
The joke is humorous, and oh, so likely to happen under
the right circumstances.
It points out the need for us to analyze what we see. Too
often we react to what we see only to find our interpretation
was wrong.
It is a common practice for mankind to respond to what
he thinks he sees, without taking the time to correctly
analyze the situation.
It is especially true with regards to our objectives. When
working hard to reach a financial objective we too often
get confused by what we think we see. A promotion we
thought should be ours goes to someone else and we
are disappointed. Little did we know the boss knew a
more senior position was opening in three months and
he had you picked for it. Yet, if you got mad, or sulky, and
started to react to what you think you saw you may
completely forfeit the better future that awaits you.
I have no idea how many times I have incorrectly reacted.
Many times in my past I have taken a stance when someone
has said or done something only to find I was wrong. I
don't much like eating humble pie. Fortunately I learned
early to watch and wait. It has proven to be a much more
fruitful way to progress.
It will for you, too. Be calm, watch, look, listen. Watch the
reaction of others. In the calm you will be surprised at
some truths that reveal themselves.
Stop and consider what I have found to be true in my life.
I have never been pleased when life took a turn I did not
want or like, however, when I really looked I
always - - - ALWAYS - - - found greater benefits
awaited me.

Excel
Applying a number format to a cell doesn't change the value --
only how the value appears in the worksheet. For example, if a
cell contains .874543 you might format it to appear as 87%. If
that cell is used in a formula, the formula uses the full value
(.874543), not the displayed value (.87).
In some situations, formatting may cause Excel to display
calculation results that appear incorrect, such as when totaling
numbers with decimal places. For example, if values are formatted
to display two decimal places, you may not see the actual numbers
that are used in calculations. But because Excel uses the full
precision of the values in its formula, the sum of two values may
appear to be incorrect.
You can format the cells to display more decimal places. You can
use the ROUND function on individual numbers and specify the
number of decimal places Excel should round to. Or you can
instruct Excel to change the worksheet values to match their
displayed format. To do this, choose Tools, Options, select the
Calculation tab, and then check the Precision as displayed check
box.

I don't know if our health care attitude is advanced
and mature enough to allow us to discuss this kind
of caregiving BEFORE it's needed, but it would be
so helpful! It would allow for planning and discussion
of the different roles needed. But one thing that has
to be accepted is the fact we are all going to fide at
some point. Maybe it's the unknown date and the
mystery of "someday", but we are now planning for
our funerals. maybe we should be a little less
reluctant to look at care giving in our homes with the
same openness. It's pretty straightforward when the
patient (dad) is in a care facility. It's the staff's
responsibility to provide the personal care to the
patient first, and then to respect the wishes of the
family members second. And they do that very well.
I guess it makes a difference who owns the
territory: hence the power. Structure becomes
evident. At this stage of life, loved ones need to try
and put aside their personal feelings and needs
and create a totally supportive and emotionally
stable environment... "the united front".
The biggest and the most important challenge right
at this point is dealing with the mother's reasons for
suggesting the care facility.. They are:
1) she can't handle the long care-giving days and
interrupted sleep any longer.
2) she can't take him safely to the bathroom any longer,
without risking injury to him or herself.
3) she feels she can't give the required care he deserves
4)and she feels terribly guilty to even think of doing this!

David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

teaching. Mankind is so insanely jealous and greedy they
hung him. They will do likewise to anyone. Look what
happened to Riata. I know we all encouraged her to let it
happen, that it could have been prevented, but look who
instigated her murder, the church. It is the same today as
in the past. Men, all over the world, will do the same. Greed
and ignorance is universal. That is why we must work slow,
and in ways that do not antagonize man. We will not be hurt,
for we have overcome death, but man will be hurt. The more
he thinks his possessions are threatened, the more he will
fight to protect them. In his ignorance he shall cause his
death. We must not hasten that by foolishly making public
spectacles of ourselves. Suffice it to say those who are
willing to look, shall see." said Mazunta.
"Man has a saying that God works in mysterious ways. This
is clearly one of the most obvious yet mysterious of
all." responded Romano.
"Sure it is Romano. Anyone who goes looking at the
alchemy texts think they are looking how to change things
into gold. When they wake up they realize they are being
told the way to spiritual mastership. Yet it was their greed
for gold that took them there. Man has never understood
the statement that you must lose your life in order to gain
it. The real problem isn't so much that he doesn't understand
it. The real problem is that he won't understand it. He won't
give up what he thinks he has. That even applies to every
churchman you know. They pretend to tell you what these
things mean, as if they are authorities, yet they have no
clue. They refuse to look." said Mazunta.
"You mean the truth has been in front of man for centuries
and he has not seen?" asked Romano.
"Yes, and not only in the bible. It is presented in one way
or another in every religion in the world. It is presented in
the alchemy texts, and it is given in thousands of secular
texts. New discoveries are happening in archeology every
day and showing the truths. Again, though, man is stiff
necked he will not see so long as he has money. It will take
real disasters for man to see. These disasters will have to
show him he can live without money. They will show man
that his organized religion has been steering him away
from truth, not giving it to him. The price for all will be
dear." answered Mazunta.
"Can we stop that? Can we help man avoid that
price?" asked Romano.
"Certainly we can, but only by arbitrary means. Man will
not then learn and we would be interfering with the way
of things. As you know death is not to be feared. It is one
of the most wonderful experiences of man's life. So
preventing death is a folly. Only those who fear death cry
and whimper for they know not, neither will they look. The
idea of preventing mass death, is rather preposterous
when you really think about it. Man is to chose on his own.
None but he can say "Yes, this is the way I want to go."
Only those who are looking will find the way. Remember
the parable of the sower. All the words you utter will not
grow into good plants. Some words fall on rocky ground,
others on thin soil that will not long support the growth
you want, few fall into fertile soil and grow to maturity.
Each man must decide what type of soil he
represents." said Mazunta.
"It is like a maze. One stumbles along, bumping into this
wall and that wall until he learns to recognize where the
walls are, Next he finds the path and follows it into the
brilliant sunshine." said Romano.
"That's right Romano." said Mazunta, "And some learn
that lesson early in the maze and others simply sit back
and enjoy the picture they see in the mirror. Those are
the self-important ones. They stay there for many lifetimes,
yet, one day they will move."
"Speaking of moving," he went on, now is the time for
us to head for lunch.
Along the way they ran into David. "Good day, David!
How are you doing today?" asked Mazunta, "You
remember Romano, don't you?"
"Sure I do. Hello Romano, how are you doing?" asked
David.
When the courtesies were over Mazunta spoke. "David,
when I was last in the trading town there were many,
many folks who were enjoying the carvings you did on
our canoes. The thought occurred to me that if we begin
to carve life sized figures we would be able to sell them
for goods at the trading center. Would you be able to
show the men how to do that?"
