How can a snake swallow food bigger than its head?
Many snakes can swallow larger animals - larger than
their own mouths - thanks to the flexible construction
of their jaws. The bones of a snake's upper and lower
jaws aren't fixed rigidly to its skull, but are attached
only by an elastic cord. This enables them to spread
apart widely when the snake eats. A snake "crawls"
over its food to eat it. Its teeth hook into the prey and
then it slowly moves first one side of its jaws and then
the opposite side to pull the prey in.
How are "killer bees" different than ordinary bees?
So-called "killer bees" are very similar to common honey
bees and are not that big a threat to human life. "Killer
bees" were originally African honey bees brought to Brazil
for research. They escaped in Brazil and started spreading
throughout South America into North America (including
the US). Like the common honey bee, they lose their
stinger after stinging (preventing them from stinging more
than once). Their venom is not more potent than that of
the honey bee. They ARE, however, more aggressive and
defensive than the honey bee and will swarm on an intruder
to protect their hive. They will also do this over a greater
distance (so you can be farther away from the hive and still
get attacked). The biggest threat from Africanized honey
bees is to beekeepers. Africanized honey bees are more
difficult to manage than domestic honey bees and produce
less honey. The businesses of many Latin American
beekeepers have failed as a result of Africanization of
the native hives.

Boil Your Passion Down To A Single Word!

It is easier to do market research on the Internet if
you can compare topics. If you are passionate about two
subjects (example: breeding poodles and carving redwood
statues), it is useful to be able to compare how these two
markets might compare in terms of demand and
profitability. I often advocate boiling your passion down
to a single word in order to do the comparison using
statistics available on the Internet (such as keyword
suggestion tools and bids on various PPC search engines).
Everyone hates this, but it gets pretty easy after awhile.
With very few exceptions, any of your hobbies, interests
and passions can be boiled down to a single word. I know
it'll be too broad to describe your actual interest in many
cases, so humor me for a minute and just do it.
Here are some examples:
I like to hunt deer in Nevada. One word: hunting
I like to knit quilts with childhood scenes. One word:
quilting
I like watching NASCAR races. One word: NASCAR
I like to play in B level chess tournaments. One word: chess
I like to write short stories and articles. One word:
writing
I like to raise my children. One word: children
I'm single. I like dating. One word: dating
I like taking pictures of black bears in Montana. One word:
bears
I'm really into astronomy and all things in the night sky.
One word: astronomy
Get the idea? Can you only get down to two words? I'll
betcha one of those words is an adjective and the other a
noun. Just drop the adjective. The noun is your single word
for this exercise. If you already have a successful site,
boil it down to a single word too. It'll be useful for
comparison in a later step.
It's OK to list two or more separate words too. In that
first example, we said:
I like to hunt deer in Nevada.
The "one word" I identified was "hunting". Let's say that
you are also interested in "deer" in other ways. You also
like to take pictures of deer in the wild. Then go ahead
and list both "deer" and "hunting" in that case. If you
also have an interest in Nevada that is independent of
hunting deer there, list "Nevada" too.
Boiling it down it a single word is important because it is
the only way we can accurately put a comparative number on
the demand and profitability of a particular subject on the
Internet. If you are in doubt about which "one word" to use
for a particular passion, go ahead and list each one.
Now you can use your single word to go check for demand for
a particular macro topic (use WordTracker or Overture to
find out how many people search for that word) or the
profitability of that topic (use Overture or another PPC
search engine to check the top bids for that topic).
I always advocate starting Internet businesses based on
passions that you already hold. It is always more fun and
your passion for the topic shows to your prospective
customers. This is a useful way to choose between your
various hobbies, interests and other passions. Have fun!

In A Terminal Illness, Everyone

I have spent many an early morning hour listening
to a distraught wife, wondering if she had any money
with which to pay the mortgage or food, or how would
she learn to handle this money, if indeed there is
some money left. One other very important thing that
spouses and the main caregivers NEVER do, is to
eat properly. So someone needs to become
responsible to make sure food is available at all
times. Nor do they get adequate rest. Until you have
been a caregiver, you will have no idea what it's like
to be woken up just as you drift off to sleep, and told
you are needed . . . and you know you won't get more
sleep for hours. (In fact remember that when you visit
your doctor next and he/she tells you they were up
most of the night in surgery.) NOTHING can take the
place of solid sleep! In my friend's case, this role of
caring for the caregiver has been delegated to one
of the grandchildren. It is now his responsibility to
look after the mom (his grandmother), for food and
rest needs. And he has chosen to pay for her needs
out of his own money! He has already made a list of
things he thinks she would like and has added a few
things he things she should try! He is a pretty proud
caregiver. This family will be ok, now that everyone
is openly talking about their concerns. They are
going to rent proper equipment. They have already
moved the mom into a guestroom surrounded by
her special things. The grandson is sharing
caregiving times with her. A niece working in a
pharmacy is going to help with nursing supplies.

Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

He walked slowly, not wanting to rush anything. He was
thinking rapidly. It would be unfair to impose more work
on Miguele's family, yet he had to look after his kin. He
would not permit them to get into the hands of others, at
least not unless that other person was Oomano.
They sauntered along and talked a little here and there
about what happened today. The kids were as much
curious as they were sad. Their interest was as much for
education as it was to have a closure type answer.
The boys had been beaten too many times to care much
about their Father. Because their Mother didn't spend
much time with them nor object to their beatings, the boys
didn't seem to mind losing their Mother too much either.
She, too, was a drinker and had often beaten the boys
for no reason other than they were there.
It was Marrietta's heart Romano was concerned about,
but he knew Oomano would soothe that.
His big concern about the boys was whether or not they
would fit in. They were just old enough to begin being
street toughs. He would have to work with them, one on
one. And he would have to be stern to begin with. He
did not want them stealing, fighting and generally getting
their way by intimidation. He would do that work.
Arriving at Oomano's was almost a thrill. By the time they
got there the children had been separated enough from
the events of the day that they responded very quickly
to the other children.
As well, and of course, Oomano, Riata, and Romano
broadcast love with their every step, their every word.
Romano's brothers and sister melted. They opened up
to the love and then began to fit in.
Much to Romano's surprise there was no fighting, stealing
or other behavior from his kin. They were entirely disarmed
by the love and companionship they received. When it
was suppertime they all came in to eat as if they had been
there for years.
Romano concluded his concerns were a function of his
former, before higher law, thinking. He had forgotten how
powerful love can be and how it can act as a great leveler,
and for that matter, leavener.
After the kids were fed they all took their plates to the kitchen
sink, and after excusing themselves, thanked Abetta for supper.
So did Romano's brothers and sister. He was once more
surprised. The kids once more returned outside to play.
"I was wondering," said Romano, tentatively, "if the kids could
stay here."
In unison, the whole familiy, Miguele, Abetta, Oomano and
Riata, all said "Certainly!" as if it was already a foregone
conclusion.
"I don't mean to burden you." stated Romano.
"Romano, we all live by higher law. There is nothing we
want for. Our job is to serve mankind. What ever made you
think we would do otherwise?" asked Riata.
"I didn't think that, Riata, but I did not want to
impose." replied Romano.
"The children have lost their parents. They need a home. We
have room and the means to look after them. It shall be
done." said Miguele, whose word in this house was
usually final.
"There, that is done." said Oomano, "I have some news
for you. Missy had a baby."
"Yeah!" said Miguele, "That's wonderful. What was it a boy
or a girl?"
"A baby girl. It looks just like her. Both she and Maz are doing
fine. Motherhood looks good on her." responded Oomano,
"They call her Alewka Andrianna Mae after the three most
important women in Missy's life."
"That's terrific. I would like to see the baby." said Abetta.
"You shall Mama. Missy asked me to bring you and Papa for
a visit. Will you come?" asked Oomano.
"Yes, Oomano, we certainly will. We haven't seen Missy for
a long time and we want to see her baby." responded Miguele.
Oomano sat back and smiled. She liked this, that her parents
would be wanting to visit Missy.
"How did you two make out at city hall yesterday?" asked Abetta.
"Oh, we did fine. There wasn't much to it really, except this
big tough guy here nearly fainted when they took his blood."
answered Oomano, laughing.
