Have you ever felt left out? It does not feel good.
Have you ever experienced loneliness during the holidays?
Many people find this to be the loneliest time of the year.
Everyone seems to be going somewhere, meeting
someone, doing something exciting and there we sit.
Doing nothing, nowhere, with no one.
NEWS FLASH! That's your choice! Oooh, does that sound
a little harsh? It is not. It's the reality of the situation. Sure,
you may wish that one group had invited you to join in
and that saddens you. There's a big question, though.
Think about this story. I love it. It was told about Leo
Buscaglia, the well-known therapist and author and it
has always stuck in my mind.
Some people in his class rushed to him one evening and
told him that a young man had committed suicide. They
were so moved because the young man had left a note
saying, "I am so lonely. I am going to walk across the
Golden Gate Bridge and, if no one smiles at me, I am
going to commit suicide."
"Isn't that sad?" they moaned to Leo.
Leo thought for a few minutes and responded,
"Yes, that is sad. However, I have a question. How many
people did the young man smile at?"
Sometimes, we leave ourselves out. We think others are
responsible for our happiness, for our self-esteem, for our
self-confidence, for our sense of belonging. No. Lovely
though it might be to have someone to blame, it is our
responsibility to build the life we most want.
I looked up the word 'include' in the dictionary and found
that it actually means "to take in or comprise as part of
the whole".
Do you see yourself as part of the whole or apart from the
whole? If the group does not invite you in, invite a group to
you. I know that makes it sound so easy and that it is not
always easy to think that way. Your feelings may be hurt.
OK, you know what I'm going to say, don't you? When your
feelings are hurt, take action. Tell the 'hurter'! How can
anyone know what hurts you unless you tell them? Do you
live in a colony of mind readers? Of course, not. Do you
think and act as though you do?
No one knows how you feel unless you tell them. And, sure,
even when you tell them, there are a lot of folks who just
don't listen! That might happen, but, do take responsibility
for telling folks how you feel and what you want. After that,
it's up to them. How they respond tells you whether they are
actually the kind of people with whom you would want to
be included!
Take responsibility: you have to do your homework, your
'own' work first! Examine yourself. Have you treated the
person well? Have you demonstrated willingness to be
included? Have you expressed a desire to be included?
More importantly, have you included them?
You are responsible for teaching people how to treat you.
Take that responsibility seriously.
Do not get caught up in 'victim' thinking! You know that
old song:
"Nobody likes me. Everybody hates me.
I think I'll go out and eat worms."
Whoever wrote that song needed a mental makeover. Yes,
it could have been just a fleeting thought in the songwriter's
mind--and I sincerely hope it was--however; some folks
make it a lifestyle! If you ever feel like a victim and then take
no action to remedy the situation, you've just become a
volunteer!
So, begin now. Have the best holidays ever. Take action
now. Be inclusive to be included.

In A Terminal Illness, Everyone

The rest of the grandchildren are also now actively
participating. After all this is real life and what better
way to show love and respect than to respond when
the need is greatest. One of my very special nursing
memories happened over a period of a year in a
long-term facility. I'll call her Nancy and she had
Huntingdon's Disease . . . a very debilitating and
unpleasant condition. As she progressed in her
unstoppable deterioration, she became more and
more violent, yet had moments of absolute love for
her caregivers. Some were afraid of her, but there
was always someone to feed her as she slowly
regressed. Then came the last days and as was
usual, the administrator called the family. They
came quickly to be with her, yet previously, wouldn't
visit her for months. "She couldn't carry on a
conversation so why should we try to talk to her".
The staff quickly created a routine for Nancy's care.
You could tell she knew they were there with love
and respect. No one needed to be asked or
reminded. There were many caregivers, yet the
family totally banished everyone! They wanted
her to be left in peace . . . without being moved.
They chose to ignore good nursing care and that
really upset the staff! The family also chose to
ignore the very painful needs of the staff! They
were "family" too. Very quickly, the director of
care stepped in and made a duty roster that
blended everyone's wishes. So it's not only the
patient who has needs to be met or feelings to
be acknowledged. . . and fears to be dealt with.
Caregivers in any form must be acknowledged, too.

Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"Why do they take blood?" asked Miguele.
"We were told that ever since last year they have been taking
blood tests before issuing a marriage license. They are looking
to keep down the incidence of venereal disease and
Aids." replied Oomano.
"I guess that will help some." observed Miguele.
The family rose from the table, cleared it and prepared to
clean up. The men were asked to arrange for three more
kids sleeping here tonight.
Going into the kids rooms, the men calculated who would
sleep where and rearranged the beds, adding two new ones,
thanks to higher law.
When bedtime came Romano's brothers and sister surprised
him once more. They fit in, again, as if they had been there
or years. It was then that Romano knew the future would be
fine, although they had to talk in the morning.
A good night was had by all.
As happened every morning in this house there was always
one of the kids that rose early. Not being content to look at
the world and enjoy it alone he woke up some of the others
and within fifteen minutes they had the whole household up.
A youngsters drive to enjoy the day is incredible. Where
adults want to sleep, become lethargic, a youngster will be
up and at it without any thought of being tired. Life is too
precious to miss, and they don't want their brothers, sisters
or friends to miss it either.
The breakfast over the kids went out to play as was the usual
start to their day.
Miguele was still rubbing his eyes when the kids left. "I don't
know where they get that energy." he said.
"Daddy, if I had five cents for every time that was said in
North and South America, I would get rich fast." said Oomano.
"It's a good thing you live by higher law then isn't it kiddo? You
have no need of money so you can let the rest of us poor folk
have it." Miguele laughed as he retorted Oomano's comment.
"I wonder where it is, and when, and even why it is that we
too soon lose our zest for life. Look at those kids. Listen. They
never tire of playing." said Riata.
"Well, I have a job to do. I'll be back in a while." said Romano.
He knew he had to be true to his word and speak with his
brothers and sister about staying here or moving on.
He walked out into the yard and called them. He had to call
twice, they were so involved in the game they were playing.
They retreated to a quiet place in the yard and all sat down
on the ground.
"Remember yesterday I said we would talk about where we
would live?" asked Romano.
The three of them nodded. They knew this was serious.
"Well, I don't think I'm ready to make a decision on that yet.
I was thinking that maybe we should postpone deciding that
until maybe a week or so. Would that be alright with you guys.
I'll come to you and ask you when I think it's time, but right
now I think it is too early. What do you think?" asked Romano.
"That's great. Is that all you wanted?" asked the boys, as
they stood to go play again.
"That's all. Are you comfortable with that?" Romano asked.
"Sure, bro." said Pietro with a tough assuredness. He was
clearly interested in doing other things. The boys were off.
"Will we stay here until you are ready to decide Romano? a
small little voice, from Marrietta, brought Romano back to
the here and now.
He looked at her, right in the eye and broadcast love,
purposely. "Yes, my sweet little sister, if that is okay with
you!" he said.
"Oh yes! That would be okay. I'm having fun with the kids
here. They are nice. And I like Oomano. She's nice. The
girls here are friendly and I'm having fun. That would be
okay." she said and was also up and away.
Romano rose, thinking it was really something, these kids.
They were one day away from losing both parents and, on
the surface, it did not seem to disturb them. "I wonder if it
would be like that in all families?" he said to himself, knowing
the answer before he finished the question.

A reportedly true story heard on Q107 yesterday:
A man was driving from his home up to Thunder Bay, Ontario to
visit friends. While there, he was involved in a collision with another
car, but the other driver left the scene of the accident. He reported it to
the police, who looked into it, and told him the next day that the car that
hit him was a stolen vehicle. The man was able to drive his pickup
truck home, only to find when he got home that, lo and behold, his car
was stolen! Sure enough, the car that hit him several hundred miles
from home was his own.
I'd just like to see if his insurance agent breaks down laughing or
crying.
