TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

What is a "Jolly Roger" and where did the name
come from?

What is the real name of the painting known as the
"Mona Lisa"?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What's the difference between a pirate and a privateer?

Many people use the above terms interchangeably,
but they're really not synonyms. "Pirate" is a more
general term used to describe "sea thieves" or outlaws
who illegally attack ships or maritime cities. A "privateer"
was a pirate who was commissioned by a government
and AUTHORIZED to seize or destroy merchant vessels
of an enemy nation. In a sense, a privateer was a legal
pirate, at least in the eyes of the nation that hired him.

Who were the Buccaneers?

Today, "buccaneer" is simply another word for pirate.
Buccaneers started out as hunters on the island now
known as Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Their
name came from the French word "boucan" (which
means barbecue), as they tended to barbecue their
meat on grills. The Buccaneers were driven out by the
Spanish in the sixteenth century and to get revenge
they bonded with other persecuted peoples, such as
escaped slaves and deserters, and began attacking
Spanish ships, particularly those bringing goods to the
Spanish American colonies. By the seventeenth century,
the word "buccaneer" was used to describe pirates and
privateers who had bases in the West Indies.

Watch! It can hurt!
by Ken Darby

A young boy called the pastor of a local "corner" church
to ask the pastor to come by to pray for his mother who
had been very ill with the flu. The pastor knew the family
and was aware they had been attending another church
down the road. So the pastor asked, "Shouldn't you be
asking Brother Simon down the road to come by to pray
with your mom?"

The young boy replied, "Yeah, but we didn't want to take
the chance that he might catch whatever it is that Mom
has."

We try to teach our children to tell the truth. We should
also try to teach them diplomacy.

A statement like the one above may well be the truth but,
ouch, it can hurt.

We all know it is innocent. Yet we must be careful in
our communications. The slightest little thing can be taken
deeply into the psyche of another and remain there to
cause hurt for a long time.

I know you know this, What concerns me though are the
little things that slip out when we think a person isn't
listening, the gossip that happens around the water
cooler or the coffee machine.

It is always much better to have a standing policy that if
you cannot say anything nice, then say nothing at all. That
way you won't get caught.

One thing very bad about gossip is that the motivation that
permits it also leads you further and deeper into the
quagmire. It is a disgusting disease that can do much harm.

Yet the one it really harms is the one delivering it. The law
says that "As ye sow, so shall ye reap." All you need do to
check up on yourself is ask the question "Would I like others
talking about me this way?"

We should recall there is always a possibility, too,
that what we say in speech also shows up in our writing.
As a consequence we might well be harming out own
business chances. Watch the nuances, the hidden
meanings. Make no assumptions that all is correct. Think
about it being correct. Question your words, written or
oral, from this point of view.

Doing this will usually help you find some things you
can clean up. It is always a worthy endeavor.

Watch! It can hurt!

COMPUTER TIPS - - -
-------------------------

Windows 2000

When using Internet Explorer, you don't have to type the
"http://" portion of the URL to connect. Just type the
rest of the address, such as www.worldat.com. If you're accessing
a non-Web address such as an FTP server, you will have to supply
the beginning portion of the address, such as
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com.

If you're typing an address in Internet Explorer's Address Bar,
leave out the http://www. and the .com parts of the address.
Next, hold down the Ctrl key as you press the Enter key. Doing so
will automatically add the http://www. part of the URL to the
beginning of the address and the .com part to the end of the
address.

Questions and Responses

Question: I had my ears pierced over two months ago
and I don't feel like they've healed... In fact, I feel as
thought they may be infected. Sometimes they swell
and are red and when I pour hydrogen-peroxide on it
fizzes like mad!! There is little to no stinging when I
clean the piercing with alcohol. Is my ear infected?
Could I go deaf if the infection gets worse?

My Response

I wonder if you are putting the studs in and could they be
a problem? Some people are "allergic" to the metal?
Have you also cleaned them to get rid of any "debris"
from previous wearing? They could be loaded with
bacteria. The other thing to think about is any sort of
hair other chemical products such as shampoo or sprays,
are getting onto the site. The ear has excellent blood
supply. Your description is showing extra fluid going to
the area, and taking away any toxins from the procedure.
This should heal the raw edges. Obviously it has... on the
other side. I have heard of this before and most of those
people have ongoing discharge. I would advise you to
see a general practitioner, (not the clinic at which this
was done) and ask to have a culture and sensitivity test
done. That will tell you the kind of bacteria, if any, is
present. It will also tell the doctor the type of antibiotic to
prescribe, if necessary. Continue to keep your hands
and the area clean. Chronic infections can lead to scar
tissue and that's not necessary here. I think you are
doing a good job, but you need just a little help.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.

Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.

The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.

The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"The old man had someone with him, one who lived by higher
law. This man began speaking with them. He was not mad,
did not issue warnings, just spoke with them. This impressed
Romano. The man said he would be back the next day if any
of them wanted to come back and talk. Of all the toughs
Romano was the only one who came back. The rest you
know. He eventually learned from this man and now lives
by higher law." said Reno.

"Who was this miracle man?" asked Maria.

"Maria, you continue to think this is something far outside
man's ability. This man is not a miracle man. He is a man
who lives by higher law, that's all. There is nothing miraculous
about him or it. The man is the husband of our beloved
Eloise. She is the one who trained the daughters of the
older man there. His name is Miguele." answered Reno.

Romano came over. "Hello Reno, Maria. How are you two
doing today?"

Maria was dumbfounded. How did this man know her name?

"Don't worry Maria. I know your name from reading yours
and Reno's thoughts as you were speaking. You were
asking about me and about Miguele. Is there anything I
can answer for you?" he asked.

With some hesitation, given this new condition, Maria
asked, "I was just wondering how you came to live by
higher law. These kids amaze me. I am also amazed
by the story of Riata. I would like to meet her again,
someday. I just don't see how you can do these
things." she stammered.

"I think, Maria, you are fighting within yourself. You are
afraid that if you commit to living your life by higher law
you might fail and be thought a fool. Presently that is
the choice you are making, to stay away from
commitment for fear of being ridiculed. If you were to
summon up the courage and go for it, you would learn
a lot." answered Romano.

"You cut right to the chase, don't you. You appear to
know exactly what my thinking is. I guess you're right. I
am afraid. I see these kids do their thing and I am amazed,
but I think, they are kids after all and have nothing to
lose." responded Maria.

"And, Maria, what have you to lose?" asked Romano,
looking deeply into her eyes.

Maria did not answer.

"May I answer that for you?" asked Romano

"You are single. You have no husband, no children. You
rent your house, and all you really think you own is some
furniture. Is that what you are afraid of losing? Oh! Yes!
You have your job as a reporter. Is that what you are
afraid of losing?" asked Romano.

He was not being mean. He was calm, humble and caring.
There was no sarcasm, no blaming, pointing fingers,
ridicule, just the facts. Romano kept his communications
absent of emotion or emphasis.

"I guess that's it. Maybe I'm afraid of losing me." answered
Maria.

"Don't you think you must be prepared to give up what you
are in order to make ready for who you are becoming? Isn't
that called growth and doesn't it apply to all the things you
have done in your life. Did you not make that choice when
you left school? You had to leave behind who you were in
order to grow into becoming a newspaper reporter. How
does this differ?" asked Romano.

"I never looked at it that way. I really don't know then what
is holding me back. I don't understand this fear. Am I afraid
you're right? Am I afraid you might just have the answer?
Am I afraid it will work?" she asked.

"All those questions must be answered by you Maria. I
can only raise questions for you to think about. It is you
who must choose." said Romano.

"Oh! Here, have you met Riata's Father, Miguele. This is
Maria, the newspaper reporter." said Romano as Miguele
walked up.

"Hello Maria. How are you?" asked Miguele.

"I am fine Mr. Pietro. I am glad to meet you. You have a
very brave daughter. I'll bet you miss her." said Maria.

"No, I do not miss her. She lives with me, now, today."
answered Miguele.

"But, but how can she? She was shot, right here in this
very place." exclaimed Maria.

It is a way of seeing some of the good things and not so good
things that happen to us along the way.

While it may not replicate your story, neither may it be replicated

HA! HA! HA!

A car was involved in an accident in a street. As expected, a
large crowd gathered.

A newspaper reporter anxious to get his story could not get
near the car. Being a clever sort, he started shouting loudly,
"Let me through! Let me through! I am the son of the victim."

The crowd made way for him. Lying in front of the car was a
donkey.
