TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

Has the Mona Lisa ever been stolen?

Why do some animals have eyes that glow in the dark?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Why doesn't the Mona Lisa have any eyebrows?

It seems strange to us now, but shaving off one's
eyebrows was the fashion in Renaissance Florence.
Mona Lisa would have been part of the "in" group.

Why is the Mona Lisa smiling?

Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa between 1503
and 1506. Ever since, viewers and art critics have
speculated about the source of the Mona Lisa's enigmatic
smile. One Italian doctor, Filippo Surano, speculates that
the woman who sat for the portrait may have suffered from
bruxism, an unconscious habit of grinding the teeth during
sleep or periods of stress (such as the stress of posing for
a terribly long time). Dr. Lillian Schwartz of Bell Labs has
another, more radical, theory. She notes that Da Vinci
recorded in his notebooks the records of model sittings,
but never recorded ANY record of the Mona Lisa model
sitting. Dr. Schwartz suggests that the Mona Lisa is actually
a self-portrait of Da Vinci as a woman. She came to this
conclusion after analyzing the facial features of Leonardo's
face and that of the Mona Lisa. Dr. Schwartz digitized both
a self-portrait of the artist and the Mona Lisa, then flipped
the self portrait and merged the two images together using
a computer. She noticed the features of the face aligned
perfectly. Want to see for yourself? Go to:Library.Thinkquest.org

Saving Money with Software Suites
by Cavyl Stewart

As the New Year gets started, many of us begin to
think of ways we can start cutting costs in the future
so that our businesses continue to become more
profitable. While you may be able to trim a few dollars
off the budget by streamlining your staff or using
your marketing budget more efficiently, you can
also save money when you go to purchase
software for your company.

Let's face it; if you are like most companies of any
size today, you rely on your software to keep your
business moving whether that software is simply
your accounting program, your graphic design
package, or a word processing program. You may
also realize the need to update your software or
to add new programs in order to stay ahead of your
competition and to continue to efficiently meet the
needs of your clients. All of that may make you
believe that you need to pay top dollar for the software
your business uses, but you can actually save money
if you buy software suites.

Software suites are collections of programs put out
by a single company. Probably the most well-known
software suite is Microsoft Office, which includes
Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, and
Publisher all in one handy collection. Purchased
alone, those six programs would cost a user over
$1200. Purchased as a suite, the software would
cost only $499. That's a significant savings. Plus,
by having all of the programs together, they are more
easily integrated so you can import Excel spreadsheets
into Publisher reports or Word outlines into PowerPoint
presentations.

With the popularity of Microsoft Office, other companies
started packaging their products into suites as well. Corel,
for example, has suites dedicated to their lines of
office-related and graphics programs while Norton's
SystemWorks is a combination of popular utilities including
antivirus software and more. Again, the appeal of all
these collections is primarily that they provide users
like you with all of the software you need at a more
affordable price while also making it easier for the
software to work together seamlessly.

One of the newest suites on the market, which may be
of interest to business owners, are two collections
created by Adobe. Both the Creative Suite's premium
and standard editions come with fully integrated versions
of some of Adobe's most acclaimed products and, as
we've seen with the previous examples, with a more
affordable price tag. The standard edition includes
PhotoShop, Illustrator, and InDesign for $999 while for
$230 more you can get the premium edition that also
comes with GoLive and Acrobat Professional. While
these prices may seem steep, they actually do reflect a
significant savings to users. Purchased separately, the
components of the standard edition would cost more
than $1800! In fact, just to purchase Adobe Acrobat
Professional would set you back $450! Another benefit
is that if you do already own last year's version of one of
Adobe's programs that are included in the suite, you
can upgrade to the entire suite at a reduced price:
$549 for standard and $749 for premium.

Software suites like Adobe's aren't for everyone. If
you only need Acrobat, for instance, there's no reason
to spend the extra money to buy the full collection.
However, if you do plan on purchasing or using two
or more of the programs in most suites, you'll find that
they will save you money in the long run while also
providing you with some valuable added features that
may come in handy down the road. After all, you never
know when you may need to create a PowerPoint
presentation or a web site using GoLive. The bottom
line is that if you want the best software and you want
to save money, then purchasing a suite may be the
best solution for your business.

Questions and Responses

I have been taking iron capsules for approx.
1 year. I began taking calcium tablets approx. 2 months
ago and just now read that I should not take these at the
same time because they will bind together and not absorb.
How far apart should I take these two, my iron is prescribed
for twice a day. I have been taking 1 iron and 1 calcium
with breakfast and repeating at bedtime. Thank you in
advance for your answer.

My Response

CALCIUM CITRATE If it contains calcium citrate, it can
be taken at any time. Suggested daily Calcium intake:
(1500 mgms. of elemental calcium) Foods highest in
calcium content: milk, including buttermilk and chocolate.

Calcium fortified drinks...soy, rice, Skim milk powder,
Yoghurt. Try to get as much calcium from your diet and
then supplement the rest. That helps the body absorb it
more naturally. Are you getting your iron levels checked?
This is done by "serum ferritin testing". You might find
you don't need to supplement. Here are some foods that
are a good source of iron. The Recommended Dietary
Allowance (RDA) of iron is 10 mg a day for males and
15 mg a day for females. (The RDA increases to 30 mg
a day during pregnancy.) Best sources of iron include
red meats, poultry, and fish. Organ meats, such as liver,
are some of the richest sources of dietary iron. Other
food sources include green leafy vegetables, legumes,
whole or enriched grain products, nuts, and seeds.
Many commercially prepared foods such as breakfast
cereals are iron fortified. Consciously eating a
well-balanced diet should provide adequate amounts
of dietary iron for most people. Your goal should always
be to get the nutrients via your foods before taking
supplements. And then try to take a complete, balanced
one instead of doing one of this and one or something
else. You need professional research to provide the
proper balance.

Here is a report on more technical information....

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.

Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.

The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.

The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"I think you are harsh, Romano." said Maria.

"Think not that. Think, instead, as you know from past
experience, that when you run up against an idea that
really irks you right to the core, it is usually an idea you
are supposed to have a long hard look at." replied
Romano, "I certainly did not mean to offend. The truth
must be recognized by you and all, if they wish to
proceed. You have been coming here for a long time.
You have watched, waited, hoping one of the children
or someone else would visit a 'miracle' upon you and
you would suddenly see. That cannot happen Maria.
The responsibility is yours. There will be no miraculous
change, except as you make it so."

Romano had held his calm and broadcast love
throughout this conversation. Maria was not feeling
attacked. She was only thinking the words were harsh.
She was not sure she wanted to hear them.

"Reno, Maria, it is time I was leaving. I look forward to
seeing you again Maria." said Romano.

He left and once more met up with Miguele. They left by
the rear, as they had come.

"What was that all about?" asked Miguele.

"Maria is enthralled by the peace and love she finds at
the orphanage. She, herself has become an orphan.
She wants to learn higher law but remains afraid she
will lose something. This day she took one more step
closer, though she is not sure she likes it." smiled Romano.

Once they reached the street, they were again in the
midst of the crowds. They worked their way slowly
toward Miguele's truck. The crowds were building, as
they did every evening.

Finding the truck, they got it and Miguele drove home
for supper.

As Romano got out of the truck his brothers and sister
came running up to him.

"Romano can we stay here? Oomano and Riata have
been teaching us. They are nice. We want to stay. We
never had a school like this. Our teachers never cared
about us like this and we never learned this stuff at our
old school."

Romano was surprised. His brothers, especially, were
not expressive toward him. He knew Oomano and Riata
would weave a net of love, kindness, caring and
acceptance around them but he did not expect this
reaction this soon.

"Yes you can stay as long as you like, but that is based
on you behaving as the others behave. Only in this way
will you be allowed to remain. Is that okay?" asked
Romano.

They, all three, gave him a hug and ran back to play with
the kids in the yard.

"Well you certainly won over the hearts and minds of my
brothers and sister, didn't you?" said Romano as he gave
Oomano a hug.

"We did no more than what we always do. They were
starving for acceptance, for love. They merely responded
to what they were receiving." answered Oomano, "Did you
have a good day with Papa?"

"I sure did. We both enjoyed our day. We stopped over
to the orphanage for a while. I had a long talk with
Maria Sanchez. She is close to making a decision. I hope
she sees and commits. She would be able to help so
many." said Romano.

They went inside. Supper would soon be on the table.
Abetta and Riata were hard at work getting it ready.

"Riata, your Dad and I stopped at the orphanage today.
I met Maria Sanchez. The next time you are there and
she, too, materialize and give her a big hug. The last time
she saw you she interpreted that as if you were a spirit,
a shadow, as a mist or smoke. She is not sure you live
and breath in the flesh." said Romano.

"Her and Reno. I must work with them both. I will. Reno,
too, is ready. I will stay close and see to it." Riata answered.

"The orphanage seems to be doing well, Riata. The kids
are wonderful and they make us most welcome. There
has been no trouble around there lately. Their reputation
must have gotten out. No one wants to mess with
them." Miguele laughed.

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

"It's kind of fun to do the impossible."
---- Walt Disney

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

Once upon a time, long, long ago there was a season
when neither the Browns nor the Steelers made the post
season playoffs. It seemed so unusual that the management
of both teams got together and decided that there should
be some sort of competition between the two teams,
because of their great rivalry. So, they decided on a
week long ice fishing competition. The team that catches
the most fish at the end of the week wins.

So on a cold freezing day on Lake Erie they began
their contest.

The first day after 8 hours of fishing the Browns had
caught 0 fish and the Steelers had 100. At the end of the
2nd day the Browns had caught 0 fish and the
Steelers 200.

That evening the Browns coach got his team together
and said, "I suspect some kind of cheating is taking place."
So the next morning he dressed one of his players in black
and yellow and sent him over to the Steelers camp to act
as a spy. At the end of the day he came back to report to
the coach. The coach asked, "Well, how about it, are they
cheating?"

"They sure are!" the player reported, "They're cutting
holes in the ice."
