ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

Why do dolphins whistle?

Bottle-nosed dolphins may talk to each other in the wild
through a form of whistling, much like their captive kin,
but a scientist writing in the journal Science says they
still don't know what the dolphins are saying, or why.
Vincent Janik -- a researcher at the Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, Mass. -- spent seven
days on Scotland's coast recording the whistles of wild
bottle-nosed dolphins swimming in the Kessock Channel of the
Moray Firth, using a series of underwater hydrophones. He
found that the free-swimming, wild bottle-nosed dolphins
practice whistle matching -- which he classified as any
vocal interaction in which one dolphin whistled and another
repeated the same whistle within three seconds. Scientists
know that captive bottle-nosed dolphins develop signature
whistles and can mimic or match each other's signature
whistles. In captive dolphins, whistle matching is thought
to be a way of locating familiar individuals who are out of
sight.

How do dolphins sleep?

According to Scientific American's "Ask the Experts" column,
bottle-nosed dolphins and whales can sleep either by resting
quietly in the water, vertically or horizontally, or by
swimming slowly next to another animal. When they do either
of these two things, they are really only napping and half
of the mammal's brain (and one eye!) stays awake at a low
level of alertness. After a few hours, the dolphin will
switch sides and use the other half of the brain and the
other eye. However, dolphins and other marine mammals can
also enter a deeper form of sleep called "logging." It's
called logging because the sleeping mammal resembles a log
floating in the water. Dolphins spend only short periods in
this deeper sleep.

Don't Make Excuses: Make Things Happen!

You know that your excuses are seldom truthful, often handy
and rarely productive. So, why make them?

It's no surprise that 'Honesty is the best policy!' is so
often quoted. It's the truth. So, why do we not seem to
believe that it applies to the conversations we have with
ourselves?

Would you feel as comfortable offering your excuses to your
employer as you are offering them to yourself? Probably
not. Why? Because your employer is unlikely to buy them and
is very likely to see through them. We don't want our
excuses exposed so we're careful where we proffer them.
Somehow, they are quite acceptable to give to ourselves. We
think they are safety hidden.

Now, does this make sense? Sure. We like to feel we can
get away with things, don't we? Let ourselves off the hook.
Relieve the pressure. Have some downtime. So, what's wrong
with this picture?

PROMISE TO STRETCH NOT OVER-EXTEND

Folks make 'pie-in-the-sky' goals. In a burst of
enthusiasm, commitment to unrealistic goals seems possible.
Take off the rose-colored glasses.

Make goals that cause you to stretch but not goals that
cause you to over-extend. There is a huge difference
between these two. Stretch feels good, you know that you can
do it and you know it is good for you. Over-extension causes
stress, fear and exhaustion.

Stretch increases your capacity slowly. You can sustain
your gains. Over-extension can cause frustration, resentment
and...excuses.

PROMISE WHAT YOU ARE WILLING TO DELIVER

Ever made a promise that you knew as you spoke you were
going to have a problem delivering? Sure you have. Why did
you do it? There are good reasons for doing so: You want to
help someone in need. You want to work towards a promotion.
You want someone to like you more, approve of you, accept
you. Good reasons.

What happens when you cannot or do not deliver? All those
good reasons are not only negated but you may have lost the
confidence of the folks you wished to serve, please or help.
Not very wise.

What about the promises you make to yourself? You count.
In fact, you count the most. Why? Because you have to live
with you every second. Personally, I believe that the
greatest contributor to lack of self-confidence lies in our
failure to keep our promises to ourselves.

Goal achievement is rooted in keeping your promises to
yourself. Don't let yourself down. You'll soon find that you
are able to keep your careful promises to others easily.

PROMISE NOT TO CUDDLE UP WITH YOUR APOLOGIES

It's also easy to be on friendly terms with our excuses. We
condition ourselves to play it safe. We limit our
adventures, discoveries, interests and risks. When we were
children, this was usually not an issue. We simply 'went
for it'.

No, I'm not suggesting throwing caution to the wind. Simply
look at what holds you back. Is it that you are unwilling
to experience even the slightest bit of discomfort or pain?
Now, there's a conundrum. Is it possible to experience
change without a little discomfort? That only happens when
you change from dress shoes to bedroom slippers, or, some
kind person provides you with clean Huggies!

Some folks think that the safe way is to do nothing. Great!
Do you want the results that choosing to do nothing
produces? If so, you are choosing wisely. If not, choose
again. Even a decision to not take action is still taking
an action. Be sure it makes sense for you.

Do you think that cuddling up with your apologies protects
your ego? Nothing ventured, nothing risked = safety? Not so.
It's never too late to try something new. Think you're too
old? Think of Grandma Moses. Think folks will laugh? Who
cares? Think of the value of laughter to them and proceed.
Think you would fall on your face? So what? It's good
exercise to pick yourself up and get going again.

Resist the urge to make excuses that keep you from your
dreams. Don't make excuses. Make things happen!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Anatomy And Physiology (A&P)
The Make Up Of Your Body And
How It Functions
PART 4 of 9

Your body's very basic unit is the cell and every cell has a
purpose or a function. The definition of a cell is "the
fundamental unit of all living tissue". For our purpose of
general explanation, each cell has a nucleus (the leader)
cytoplasm, in which the nucleus lives and a cell wall. There are
many other types of cells, but this one definition works for us.
So every part of your body is a cell. Nothing that is in you is
NOT a cell of some type. And these cells perform different
activities. Similar cells arrange themselves in groups and are
then called tissue. And tissue is described as a collection of
similar cells acting together to perform a particular function.
Nerve cells carry messages to the brain. Connective tissue holds
different parts together. Muscle tissue creates all sorts of
padding, and epithelial tissue holds your body in a nice shape
via your skin. Of course, there are many more combinations.

One kidney cell is pretty ineffective, but millions of them can
keep you alive. Same for brain cells. All this similar tissue
together is now called an organ (a very important member of
society is an organ donor. The generosity of such a gift will
change the course of another's life.) And in grouping these
organs together, you now have systems. In essence, you are one
tiny cell many times multiplied into ten systems.

We won't get too technical but just know that each of us has
these cells and that's the anatomy of the body.the make up of
the structures. An analogy is that we are all people of
different colours and races, but underneath we are all the same.
Same structures. Same organs. Same tissue. Same systems. Same
brain cells. But we seek out relationships that make us
comfortable: where we feel accepted. The same happens with the
organs and their tissue. All organs that deal with feeding or
elimination of waste production are grouped into the
Gastrointestinal or Digestive system. Anything to do with the
blood or the heart is combined and called the Cardiovascular
system. The eight other systems are Urinary, Respiratory,
Muscular, Skeletal, (often linked together as Musculoskeletal)
Endocrine, Integumentary, Nervous, and Reproductive. So from a
single cell, we have now established a living person.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

your favorite bookstore. ISBN # 1-4137-4723-X

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"Honey, they are only the messengers. I have not heard
anyone in church teach this. I know I was dead, Kathy. I
know I was transported up the hill. I know I was kept warm
when it was freezing. I saw the car become whole with my own
eyes. These things don't just happen. They happen for a
reason. I think it's time you and I did some thinking."

"But Hank! Listen to them. The law seems quite
unforgiving. If I do things wrong I end up getting the
reward for that."

"Well, Kathy, what happens when you touch a hot stove.
You're a grown girl now and I'm a grown man. I think it is
about time we accept responsibility for who and what we are.
We can excuse ourselves all the way to our death beds if you
want, but what good will that do?"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean its about time we accepted responsibility for
who we are. We can go on doing things because everybody else
is doing them or we can ask ourselves if what we are doing
is right. We can look at the results we want and conduct
ourselves in ways that will bring out those results. If that
means a change in our thinking, so be it. I think that's a
great deal better than me having a heart attack or you
getting breast cancer. And what is the cost? A little bit of
effort? C'mon! Is that what's bothering you?"

"No, I just don't like the unyielding position Tim and
Susan, here, are taking. The make it seem hard. What if we
fail? What if something goes wrong? What will our friends
think?"

"Is it that last thing that bothers you? Are you really
concerned what Janet thinks about you, or me? Does it bother
you that Harriett might think you are crazy?"

"That could happen, you know."

"Sure it can and likely will, but tell me, how much does
Janet or Harriett contribute to this family? Where would
they be if I were dead? Oh, they might help out a little,
but the real truth is you would have to go it alone -
period. Are those the people you want to live your life for
or do you want to live your life for the yourself, the kids
and I?"

"Listen to yourself. You're sounding just like them."

"I know. I just can't find any fault with Tim's
thinking, Sharon's too. I can tell you I was mighty glad Tim
helped me out of the car. I'm mighty glad he got me to the
top of the hill and I'm mighty glad he fixed our car and it
is safely in the garage even as we speak. Do you know anyone
else who has helped us out that much?"

"Well, no, but . . ."

"Kathy, listen to you. You are arguing in favor of
staying where you are. This is a new knowledge given us on
the ways our Maker wants us to live. I presume that if we
follow what Jesus told us to do, then the rest of the
promises will come to pass. Certainly it seems Tim and
Sharon can do things we cannot and they are trying to tell
us it is because they do the things Jesus told them to do.
Are you arguing against them? Of against Jesus? Or against
putting in the effort and commitment?"

"Sharon? I thought it was Susan. What is it?

"It's Sharon, Kathy, and neither Tim nor I are trying to
be hard nosed. The laws of our Maker are and it behooves us
to learn them and learn to meet with our Maker, inside. The
sooner we do as we are instructed, the sooner we enjoy
perfect health, prosperity and peace. Until then we suffer
in the material world of bondage and man. It is the
individual choice of each person, Kathy. Don't be too
concerned that your reaction appears to be against what
Jesus told you. Hundreds of thousands are like that. They
are afraid to think they alone are responsible for what
happens to them. They would rather go to church and confess
and leave, thinking that somehow Jesus is going to wipe the
slate clean. That's a church idea, Kathy, not Jesus'."

"But why aren't we taught the right way?"

"If you were in the church would you teach the right
way?"'

"What do you mean?"

"If you were a nun, or someone in the church responsible
for the guidance or teaching of people, would you teach what
Jesus taught? Or would you teach what the church tells you
to teach?"

"Well . . . I presume that if I didn't teach what the
church told me to, then they wouldn't have me teaching,
would they?"

"Are you beginning to see my point, Kathy?"

"Y . . . yes, I am" Kathy answered Tim quietly and bowed
her head. She knew then what the church was doing. She
didn't want to see it, but there it was.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Electricity: Who invented the word "electricity"?

Dr. William Gilbert - who became physician to Queen
Elizabeth in 1601. Dr. Gilbert gave the name "electric" to
static electricity produced by rubbing a piece of amber with
a cloth. He derived the name from elektron, the Greek word
for "amber".

A man and his friend were enjoying Deer Hunting Season in
rural Virginia near a blacktop highway. A huge buck walked
by and the hunter carefully drew his bow and took careful
aim.

Before he could release his arrow, his friend pointed at a
funeral procession passing on the road below their stand.

The hunter slowly let off the pressure on his bow, took off
his hat, bowed his head and closed his eyes in prayer.

His friend was amazed. "Wow, that is the most thoughtful and
touching thing I have ever seen.

You are the kindest man I have ever known."

The hunter shrugged. "Yeah, well, we were married for 35
years!
