Who was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for
literature?
Edith Wharton was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1921 for
"The Age of Innocence."
Did Grandma Moses really start painting when she was 77?
Yes. Prior to becoming an acclaimed artist, Grandma Moses
was a farm wife and mother of ten (five of whom lived past
infancy). So she was pretty busy. She actually took up
painting because her arthritis made needlework difficult. By
the time of her death at age 101, she'd produced nearly
1,500 paintings and had some of them exhibited at the Museum
of Modern Art in New York. So if you're pretty sure you have
an artist in you, there's still time to find her!

Gates: 'People tend to get overfocused on one of our
competitors'
Thursday, January 05, 2006 - 09:20 AM EST
"Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates took the wraps off its
next-generation operating system known as Windows Vista on
Wednesday, displaying features aimed at positioning the
software giant as the entertainment hub for a future of
digitally connected homes," Daisuke Wakabayashi reports for
Reuters. "The much anticipated upgrade to Microsoft's
flagship operating system displayed a new interface with 3-D
scrolling between different windows, which can appear
translucent to allow users to see the information beneath."
"Some of the elements of Vista featured in Gates' speech
took aim at Microsoft's various competitors, such as Google
Inc. and Apple Computer Inc.," Wakabayashi reports.
"Microsoft unveiled a search function within Vista that cuts
across the content within the PC and its network, aimed at
not conceding search on the desktop or the Internet to
Google. 'People tend to get overfocused on one of our
competitors. We've always seen that,' said Gates. 'The
biggest company in the computer industry by far is IBM. They
have the four times the employees that I have, way more
revenues than I have. IBM has always been our biggest
competitor. The press just doesn't like to write about
IBM.'"
"Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft also unveiled MTV
Network's Urge Music Service, which will be built into
Vista's new Windows Media Center and offer users instant
access to 2 million songs and videos in MTV's library,"
Wakabayashi reports. "In a show of pizzazz usually reserved
for Apple, Gates was joined on stage by pop idol Justin
Timberlake to introduce the new service. The enormous
popularity of Apple's iPod portable music player has made
the accompanying iTunes music and video service the defining
entertainment media delivery service."
-----
MacDailyNews Take:
If Gates was referring to Apple with his
"people tend to get overfocused on one of our competitors"
comment, the reason is because most people are interested in
the future, not in seeing things called "innovations" that
Mac users have had for half a decade or more. Photo
organization app with red eye removal? Translucent windows?
Some rudimentary Exposé feature? Justin Effing Timberlake?!
Puleeze, will the rest of the world actually fall for Gates'
and Microsoft's B.S. again? What would the world's PC users
have to be excited about exactly, that they can finally do
it, if they buy a new computer to run Vista? What'll stop
them from buying a Mac instead (especially if Intel-based
Macs can run their Windows software at acceptable speed)?
Their iPods will thank them for it, that's for sure; so will
their sanity. This isn't 1995, many people can see Microsoft
for what they are: a mediocre application coder that has
grown bloated beyond recognition and is already in decline,
past its prime; desperate to leverage its monopoly to hold
onto its position. Rolling out a fake, badly-executed copy
of Mac OS X, 6+ years after Apple's original debut, is just
plain sad - almost as sad as the 11 years it took them to do
it the first time (1984 vs. 1995).
Don't misunderstand, millions upon millions will lap up
Bill's pabulum and excitedly and ignorantly line up at
midnight for another box full of Windows dreck. After all,
half of the people in the world are below average. Still,
many will be forced to upgrade to a new computer to run
Vista and, if Apple would finally advertise correctly,
regularly, and heavily, the Mac platform could see
significant and rapid growth in 2006 and beyond.
And don't believe a word that the great samaritan/monopoly
abuser says about which competitors he's most worried. He
has to be worried about Apple. If he's not, Microsoft's in
for even more trouble than anyone can imagine. People like
to say that the "OS Wars" are over. They're not.

Anatomy And Physiology (A&P)
The Make Up Of Your Body And
How It Functions
PART 6 of 9
Let's review the definition of anatomy and physiology
and then use the heart as an example.
ANATOMY is the study, classification, and description of
structures and organs of the body. I think that's pretty well
explained.cell to tissue to organ to system to body.
PHYSIOLOGY is the study and process of the function
of the human. It is the study of the physical and
chemical processes involved in the functioning of the
living organisms and their component parts.
We know that the heart is a huge muscle, as is your
biceps muscle in your upper arm. Same tissue, but
their FUNCTIONS are VERY different! Let's suppose
you are to cut out 3/4 of your biceps muscle because
it was diseased and becoming necrotic (dying tissue).
You would have a big hollow in your arm, but life
would continue. Do the same 3/4 "reduction" in your
heart (organ) and life COULD not continue! So
function of any cell and its larger part, is vitally
important. And of course each organ has its own
specific, specialized and non-duplicable function.
Obviously with ten different systems working
simultaneously in your body, there is a lot of activity.
And most of it done without any knowledge or help
on your part. Your heart beats. Your lungs expand
and contract automatically. They exchange blood
with oxygen for blood without oxygen. Your kidneys
are constantly filtering. Your digestive tract is
handling input and output of nutrients. Your skin is
protecting you and holding you together. Your bones
are holding you upright and your brain is
computing millions of messages. You are a living
miracle! And this list isn't anywhere near complete!
Nothing so far has been said about maintaining
this perfect "machine". It does require maintenance.
Nothing runs forever. Systems break down by lack
of one or more deficits. The basic cell can be
impaired by a number of factors. In a very
simplistic way, any food that the cell can't use or
is harmful hinders its health maintenance. All
systems are required to work in harmony and
efficiency. It is called dis-ease. Your body has
supplied the cells, and the systems and the
functions. It's up to you to supply the
maintenance factors.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

----------------
The room was filled with such intense love it was
impossible to move. It was the kind of love that swept
through a body and cleansed it of illness and thoughts that
create harm.
From the light emerged three men. Tim and Sharon had
seen them before.
The first one spoke. He acknowledged Tim and Sharon then
directed his speech to Hank and Kathy.
"You have spent your life thinking I am long dead. You
have listened to your church and followed their dictates,
yet you do not follow mine. Long ago I gave you the way to
live your Maker's way. Think not that I shall save you. I
have already shown you the way. Follow it, live it and by
law you shall be saved. I did not have to go to the cross.
That was not destiny. Think you that I was then unable to
destroy those who sought me out? I went to the cross because
it was necessary that man see that death can be overcome. I
don't mean that you take up life somewhere else, in some
fictional place the church tells you of. I mean you can
overcome death. You think I am now a dream? Touch me, see
that I am real. Understand in your heart of hearts I live,
eat, sleep and breath in the flesh today as I did that long
time ago. No, I am not the only teacher. In this room are
four of my friends, Buddha, Mohammed, Tim and Sharon. We are
all charged with teaching the way.
Think not that I am responsible for your well being or
your future. You, alone, bear that responsibility. Learn the
laws and you shall prosper. Commune with your Maker that you
might learn the way."
Jesus stepped back a pace.
Kathy was sobbing so deeply her body was convulsing.
Hank was on his knees, looking at Jesus. While he had tears
in his eyes he was bent on absorbing all that was happening.
Buddha steeped forward. "You have been told to stay away
from Eastern religions so you have not seen my teachings. It
would be worth your while to go there. However, the message
is the same whether it come from your bible, Tim and Sharon
or from me. There is only one way and to enjoy the fruits
thereof you must take that way, unless, of course, you
prefer to live in the material and monetary squaller man has
established. One more thing. The religion you purport to
follow is an Eastern religion."
Mohammed stepped forth. "So, too, with your
understanding of my teachings. The world is full of people
who think only on the mental and physical plain. You must
learn to live a spiritual life if you would lead the life I
taught and which your Maker wants for you."
Jesus once more came forward. He leaned down to touch
Kathy's arm. Instantly there appeared thereon the telltale
heart. Then he touched Hank's arm and the same happening
occurred.
"These are to remind you that the teachings you have
received are true. What you do with them is a matter of your
choice but you can no longer deny them as you have preferred
to do."
Jesus stepped back into the light. As he did he was
"absorbed" by the light. As the other two men followed him
they, too, disappeared. Then the light slowly diminished.
The room was still and quiet. No one moved for quite
some time.
Tim and Sharon knew what was going on in the minds,
hearts and souls of Hank and Kathy. The pair of them sat
motionless for any movement now, any noise now, would
interrupt what was going on in the couples minds.
They sat there for 45 minutes until Kathy began to stir.
She slowly lifted herself from the floor. Hank, too, rose.
They said nothing, but looked into each other's eyes. They
knew what had just happened. Gradually they made their way
to their chairs again, and sat.
"Wa . . . was that? Y . . . ye . . . yes it was. Oh my."
Sharon reached over and pulled up Kathy's sleeve of her
blouse to reveal where Jesus had touched her.
Kathy again went into tears of joy and deep, deep love.
Hank looked at his arm and there was the heart. He
looked over at Tim and Sharon. They, too, had hearts on
their arms. "I did not see him touch you."
"We have seen Jesus many times. He touched us, like you,
the first time he revealed himself to us. You have not seen
them before now for they are not visible to those who know
not the love of their Maker. You will not learn that in
church. You must go inside, within you, to bask in the love
of your Maker. There you will find love you have not known
before."
Ever so slowly the conversation became more involved.
Kathy was no longer a doubter and Hank was certain of the
events of this night.
"I . . . I didn't know." Kathy was speaking as if she
were almost ashamed. It was as if she suddenly thought she
should have known better.
"Fear not, Kathy. We all must come to this time where we
see, for the first time. None are exempt and none are
without ignorance. It is all part of life's learning."
The lives of Kathy and Hank had been changed forever
this night. They had been living as if in a dream. The
knowledge and love they now had felt touchable, palatable.
Like all newcomers they would be given a period of grace, in
which they could examine who and what they are and make
decisions as to how they were going to conduct their lives
now. Neither made any commitment to Tim and Sharon, neither
to themselves. However, they would no longer think of the
story of Jesus as a story. They now knew better. One thing
was absolutely certain. They knew they had been with Jesus
in the flesh.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Eat One's Head Off: What is the reason we say a lazy person
"eats his head off"?
The expression was originally applied to horses whose food
cost more than they could earn. It refers to the humorous
notion that a horse eating oats will keep on nibbling its
lips after the oats are gone and, if not stopped will
finally succeed in eating its own head off.
