Yes, Genghis was Kublai's grandfather.
Why is Chicago called the "Windy City"?
I always assumed it had to do with weather. But apparently,
Chicago's nickname is not associated with actual windy
conditions. Rather, it was given to the city by New York Sun
editor Charles Dana in 1893. Dana was sick of hearing
long-winded politicians boasting about the wonders of the
World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago that year. The
first Ferris wheel, by the way, made its debut at that
event.

Tiny Apple has oversized influence
The company continues to set bold new standards for the PC
and consumer electronics industries.
Fortune Magazine
By Peter Lewis, FORTUNE senior editor
January 11, 2006: 2:14 PM EST
SAN FRANCISCO (FORTUNE) - What is it about Apple that makes
customers so passionate? Perhaps they sense Apple's similar
devotion to them. "We're all consumers [at Apple] and we
know what consumers like," CEO Steve Jobs explained in an
interview after his keynote. In other words, Jobs explained,
Apple's engineers and programmers love technology and build
products that they themselves want to use.
It's an approach that garners the company not just
customers, but lots of influence.
The media, for instance, always flocks to any Steve Jobs
appearance, on the mere hint that a new Apple (Research)
product will be announced. If Dell (Research) or HP
(Research) or Sony (Research) sent out cryptic invitations
to an event in San Jose, as Apple did last fall, would
dozens of the tech industry's top journalists drop
everything to be there? Probably not.
So much fuss -- yet Apple's share of the computer market is
less than 5 percent. Walk into a major corporation anywhere
in the world and you'll have a hard time finding an Apple
Macintosh computer, except maybe in the graphics department.
Sony introduces as many new products in a week as Apple does
in a year, but Apple's market capitalization (the value of
all the shares sold to investors) is bigger than Sony's,
clear evidence that investors, as well as customers, are
enamored of the Cupertino company that was founded on April
Fool's Day 30 years ago.
Tiny market share, big influence
So what explains Apple's oversized influence on the tech
industry? "Apple is a product-driven company," explained
Philip W. Schiller, Apple's head of worldwide product
marketing. Most companies would say they are
customer-focused. Others would concede that they're
profit-driven. At Apple, Schiller explained, the focus is
always to build the world's best product, whatever it is. If
it builds the best computer, the best portable music player,
the best online music store, Schiller said, customers will
be happy and profits will follow.
At the Macworld keynote Jobs did unveil what may in fact be
the world's best desktop and laptop computers, and, to go
with them, the world's best personal creativity and
productivity software.
Some companies build products that are beautiful, but hard
to use. Others build products that are easy to use, but
technically ugly. Apple, Jobs said, demands that all new
products and each and every component of those new
products -- be powerful, beautiful and simple to use,
whether it's a computer operating system, a click-wheel on
an iPod, a video downloading service or the highly-machined
screws on a laptop computer.
And there's always a desire to make every new product it
even better than the last. One example: the power cord that
plugs into the side of the PowerBook laptop sometimes gets
snagged when someone walks by and catches it with a foot. In
worst cases, the laptop gets dragged off the desk onto the
floor, or the power port gets damaged. Solution: the new
MacBook portables use a magnetic power adaptor called
MagSafe, which attaches securely and but detaches easily.
Another example: Sharing digital photos with Grandma was
still too hard, so Apple created "photocasting," allowing
Grandma to receive new photos automatically on her computer
when her kids drag the shots into a special folder on their
computers.
Apple sets the standards
At last week's Consumer Electronics Show, a dozen PC makers
announced support for the Intel Corporation's new dual-core
Intel microprocessor, saying they would deliver Core Duo
computers to consumers in the spring. Apple, which didn't
start working with Intel until last spring, will beat them
all to market with Core Duo-based iMac computers, which
started shipping to stores as Jobs was speaking yesterday.
The transition to Intel chips from the Motorola (Research)
and IBM (Research) chips Apple has used for the past decade
was a daunting challenge, not just in terms hardware but
also because it required Apple to rewrite all of its
software to run on the new chips. But Apple and Intel
engineers got the job done six months ahead of schedule.
And, in keeping with Apple's product-centered philosophy,
the Intel-based iMac and MacBook computers unveiled at
Macworld yesterday appear to be more powerful, easier to use
and, yes, more beautiful than any of the rival machines
promised by competitors last week at the CES show.
We won't know for sure until we've had a chance to test
them, but once again Apple appears to be setting the
standards for the rest of the PC and consumer electronics
industries.
"Each year I see us come up with products we couldn't even
make two years ago," Schiller said. "It's self-perpetuating,
and the gap between Apple and its competitors is widening."

Salt Intake: How Do You Compare?
The average person consumes about 6 to 18 grams of salt
daily. That's roughly one to three teaspoonfuls. Your
body actually needs only about 0.5 grams of salt (0.2
grams of sodium or approximately 2300 mgs of Na) each
day.
Reducing the amount of sodium you consume may help you
reduce or avoid high blood pressure. High blood
pressure, is more likely to lead to heart disease and
stroke. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of
death in the United States.
American Heart Association sodium recommendations
Healthy American adults should reduce their sodium
intake to no more than 2300 mgs per day. This is about
1-1/4 teaspoons of sodium chloride (salt). Many foods
in their natural state contain sodium, but most sodium
in our diet is added to food while it's being
commercially processed or prepared at home. That's why
you need to be aware of both natural and added sodium
content when you choose foods to lower your sodium
intake. When buying prepared and pre-packaged foods,
read the labels.
Watch for the words soda and sodium and the symbol Na
on labels - these words show that sodium compounds are
present.
Eating more meals away from home? Controlling your
sodium intake doesn't need to spoil the pleasure of a
restaurant meal: just order selectively. Don't use the
salt shaker. Use the peppershaker or mill. Be familiar
with low-sodium foods and look for them on restaurant
menus. When you order, be specific about what you want
and how you want your food prepared. Request that they
prepare your dish without salt. Add fresh lemon juice
to fish and vegetables instead of salt. Heart Smart
options are available in many restaurants.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL

Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The headman beckoned the young man to come forward. The
young man refused, holding up his hands in fear. The headman
nodded to his henchmen and they grabbed the youth by the
arms. They dragged him to the kettle. The youth was
screaming a high pitched scream, purportedly out of fear.
The headman took a cup and reached into the awful
mixture in the kettle. "Here, drink" was his command.
The youth refused. There was a gunshot. The youth fell,
and a pool of blood oozed out onto the ground from
underneath him.
The headman pointed to the next youth in line. Again,
with fear and shaking he was dragged forward and given the
cup. He drank, deep.
The headman and all his henchmen cheered. The young man
was given a rifle, ammunition and the much beloved, much
sought after scarf. He was now permitted the freedom to do
as he wished.
Billy and Sonora, still hidden and watching this scene
knew exactly what was happening. They knew the headman and
his men had gathered up the young men and brought them to
this place, like cattle in a truck on the way to the
slaughter house. Now, with this fear ridden ceremony the
young men were taking an oath and drinking the vile liquid
out of fear, yet when they came out the other side of the
ordeal they were thoroughly convinced they were invincible
and that they were warriors supreme.
The headman had chosen youngsters who had no education
in the way of life, were taught to be wary of black magic
and in their ignorance and fear, were now made to go through
this ceremony. They had no choice but to believe.
Billy and Sonora decided to make themselves invisible
and to walk out among the group. They knew, for example the
youngster who was shot, wasn't. He was just lying there as
an example. The group of teens did not notice his slow,
controlled breathing.
Just before the headman was about to call for his men to
take the body away, Billy kicked the young man in the ribs,
hard. The kid yelped and grabbed his ribs. Then there was
another kick, this time in the groin. The kid rolled into
the fetal position, screaming.
The headman immediately began to tell the group this was
a result of his power. That if any of them were ever hurt
they, too, would come to life as this young man. Then he
reached into the kettle to get another cup full of liquid
for the next young teen.
This time, however, he slopped it all over himself and
his shiny new clothing. Then the paint he had applied to
himself began to run down his body, from his forehead down
his face onto his chest and on down his body.
The next thing that happened was a surprise to everyone.
Sonora had somehow caused the group of teens to see
something funny and they began to laugh. The laughter
appeared to mock the headman. He bid his men stop it, and
they tried, but the harder they tried the harder the group
laughed.
The headman nodded to one of his men. The man pointed
his rifle at the crowd of young men. They laughed even more
and pointed to the man. He pulled the trigger and his weapon
backfired, burning his hands and face. He threw the weapon
down, screaming and running.
The laughter stopped. The group of teens suddenly knew
they had the power to get out of this ordeal. They looked at
the headman and he was truly a sight to cause laughter. He
was a mess, standing there once thinking he was a
magnificent looking leader and now appeared to be a bundle
of melted wax. Suddenly his skirt flew away and he was naked
before the world.
The group again laughed only this time they also
pointed. The headman's manhood was now dripping with the
accumulated make up that had dripped down his body. The
sight was pathetic.
The headman ordered his men to shoot into the crowd.
They, too, were laughing so hard it was difficult for them
to aim and fire. All four remaining men with guns fired. All
weapons had been constricted by Billy and they all
backfired. The screaming, the pain and the confusion that
followed was enormous.
The headman was shamed to the depths of his soul. He
tried to cover his nakedness, to no avail. The confusion,
the jostling and the noise was too much. He began to head
for one of the buildings. As he approached, it exploded. He,
in fear now, headed for another. It, too exploded as did the
last building. He now had nowhere to go and no supplies or
means to build his "army". The man was frightened beyond
what he could remember. "What was happening?"
As we have seen, handling men who are ignorant,
uneducated, can be an easy thing to do when one is so
superior as to command they follow. In this case the headman
was superior because his men had weapons. The ceremony was
to do three things. It was to have the men believe they were
now invincible, to have them be a loyal army to the headman
and to think so highly of the headman that they held him in
awe.
The circumstances were now changed. Something had
happened to the headman, his men, his supplies, his
buildings, his weapons.

Two Alaskan hunters get a pilot to fly them to out to hunt
moose. They bagged six. As they started loading the plane
for the return trip, the pilot said the plane could take
only four moose. The two Alaskans objected strongly, "Last
year we shot six and the pilot let us put them all on board
and he had the same plane as yours."
Reluctantly, the pilot gave in and all six were loaded.
However, even on full power, the little plane couldn't
handle the load and went down a few moments after take-off.
Climbing out of the wreck one Alaskan asked the other, "Any
idea where we are?"
"Yeah I think we're pretty close to where we crashed last
year."
