What are folklorists talking about when they say "The
Grateful Dead"?

"The Grateful Dead" is not just the name of a rock group. It
also refers to a particular type of folk story in which a
man risks his safety to help a corpse get proper burial and
then is rewarded in some way by the deceased. Often, the
grateful dead man helps the live man find a bride.

What is a "fifth column"?

A "fifth column" refers to a group of secret sympathizers or
supporters of an enemy that engage in espionage or sabotage
within defense lines or national borders. Basically, it
means any group of subversives attempting to undermine a
nation from within its borders. The term was originally
applied to rebel sympathizers in Madrid in 1936 (during the
Spanish Civil War) when four rebel columns were advancing on
the city. A Fascist general named Gonzalo Queipo de Llano y
Sierro is said to have described his supporters within the
city as a "fifth column."

Saddam judge 'resigns from trial

Judge Rizgar has submitted a letter of resignation
The chief judge in the trial of former Iraqi leader Saddam
Hussein has tendered his resignation, reports say.

A source involved in the tribunal told the BBC he is
disappointed by public reaction to his running of the trial.

Judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin has been accused by Iraqi and US
politicians of being too lenient on Saddam Hussein during
hearings at his murder trial.

The source said his resignation has not yet been accepted
and colleagues are trying to persuade him to reconsider.

Judge Rizgar is overseeing the trial of Saddam Hussein and
seven former members of his regime over the killing of 148
people in Dujail in 1982.

The defendants all deny the charges.

'Seeking fairness'

There are four other judges involved in the tribunal, but
Judge Rizgar has been very much the public face of the
court.

Amid security fears, highlighted by the killing of two
defence lawyers, only one other trial judge has appeared on
camera and many witnesses have kept their identities secret.

Saddam's trial is not a farce

Some members of the Iraqi government and US politicians have
complained that Judge Rizgar has been too soft on the former
president, allowing him to take over the court.

However, the source within the tribunal told the BBC's
Alistair Leithead in Baghdad that Judge Rizgar is not
resigning over pressure from the Iraqi government, but
because of his disappointment at the public's reaction.

The source said that the judge had simply been trying to
ensure that the trial is fair and that everyone involved
gets their say.

'Winning tactic'

The BBC's world affairs editor, John Simpson, who has
attended the trial in Baghdad, says that Judge Rizgar has
been remarkably lenient to Saddam Hussein and his
half-brother, Barzan al-Tikriti, and they have taken
advantage of this.

However, he says that this does not mean that the senior
judge has lost control of his court.

Judge Rizgar is a polite, highly intelligent man, who wants
the world to see that he dispenses a very different kind of
justice from Saddam's own courts, our correspondent says.

And it is a tactic that works, our correspondent says - at
the start of the trial, Saddam Hussein refused even to give
his name. Yet by force of sheer politeness, Judge Rizgar has
worn him down.

His resignation must be approved by both the prime
minister's counsel and the president and vice-presidents.
The trial is due to resume on 24 January.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

The Body's Healing Process

Whenever the body has something in it that it finds NOT
normal: i.e. the way the body is meant to be, your body's
circulatory system brings extra fluid to the area to flush
out the free radicals, toxins, etc. This process is called
the inflammatory process.

It will happen anywhere in our bodies, i.e. knees...when we
don't have enough natural lubricant, ears...when there is
some type of irritation (Meniere's). Fibromyalgia…Pain
centers, Diabetes, when our bodies can't produce enough
insulin to neutralize the extra sugar we eat.

When we are healthy, the body has lots of natural fighters
known as "anti-oxidants" which it gets from food and water
and a good environment, moderate exercise, rest, etc.

Once all these situations change.. and a few of the changes
are: food has no real nutritional value any longer
(transportation, chemicals added, plus..), too much
exercise, environmental pollution, drugs to correct the
problems, chemicals in foods or hormones in animals....
sometimes the body gets confused and "eats itself"
(auto-immune condition)

In most cases, you HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THIS.

So the natural thing for your body to do is to try and
remove these challenges.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

The group of teens, still grouped were almost mesmerized
at the scene in front of them. It was like watching a motion
picture. They all stood where they were and watched.

Now Sonora made herself visible. She manifested an aura
around her, of love. It shone on those she was near.

She stood between the teens and the rest of the men on
site. "All you men come here and line up." Her commands were
so authoritative it almost forced all the men to do as she
said. This was now a new thing that was happening. No one,
from the headman on down, knew who this woman was.

The headman knew he was about to lose his power. He
charged at her but before he could get close, something or
someone tripped him. He fell, at speed, flat on his face. He
slowly rose, all scratched and bleeding. What with all the
make up still a mess, this fall, the blood and scratches,
this man was now a pitiful mess.

Slowly Sonora had them all lined up. With a wave of her
hand they were all naked, standing there in front of her.
They were confused and did not know what to do. They tried
to cover themselves, but that was hard when some of them had
burnt hands, eyes closed from wounds to the face.

In all there were eight men, including the young man who
played Judas goat.

Sonora held up her hands and silenced all. She then
spoke.

"From this day you shall serve all men, women and
children. You will do their bidding and aid them in any way
you can. If you should fail or if you feel you should not do
any chore for any person then you will experience severe,
terrible pain in your manhood. Further, you shall not lay
with a woman unless she invites you. If you force your
attentions upon any you will experience this pain. It will
cause you to double up and hurt for a long time. The more
you serve your fellow man the less pain you shall have,
indeed you shall be made to feel great. Anytime you think of
harming others you shall have this pain. Anytime you think
of helping others you will have no pain and you will feel
good."

One of the men started for her. "No woman will tell me
wha . . ." The man doubled over in excruciating pain,
holding his groin and screaming for it to quite. It went on
for quite a while before it slowly subsided. The man was
sweat from head to toe when he could finally stand erect.

Sonora turned to the group of teens. They were all
standing there with their mouths open. "You have all been
forced to be here. You were forced and fooled with this
ceremony. No such ceremony held anywhere at anytime by any
man can make you invincible. Only by going inside to find
and commune with your Maker can you become invincible. You
are all free to go. This man will never again harm anyone.
He will serve you if you ever see him again. Wherever you
see the scarf identifying those this man initiated, tell
them the story. Spread it far and wide, telling them that if
they follow this man they will have the same pain he has,
but if they lay down their rifles, break them, put them in
the fire, then they shall have the opportunity to go inside
and meet their Maker, like yourselves. This say and your
words will command them as mine have commanded you."

The teens slowly began to walk away. They were all
talking amongst themselves. Unfortunately they considered
this woman was using black magic and they should therefore
be afraid of her, after all did you see what happened with
that man who was going to attack her?

There was considerable consternation amongst the big
strong men who did not take orders from a woman. More than
one man thought of doing things against Sonora. The moment
they did they bent over in excruciating pain. It was only
when their intentions were honorable that they felt fine.
This day would certainly be one they remembered for a very
long time.

Their leader, now blood stained, sweaty, and dirty from
the dust of the earth getting into any and all moist areas
of his body. He almost appeared as a ghost, for his entire
body was covered with dust. The man was quite a sight.

Billy decided to render himself visible. The men cowered
when they saw a man stand beside this witch of a woman.

They had not counted on anyone coming to her aid. They
were still of the foolish hope they were going to get this
woman for foiling their initiation ceremony. She not only
did that but she destroyed all possibility of this man and
his crew mounting any kind of military machine for the
overthrow of the government. They were angry, but the
presence of Billy now made them cower, rather than be
aggressive.

"I want each of you to now drink what you were offering
to those young men. Drink the drink of 'invincibility'. To a
man they put their hands up and were backing away.

"Halt, get over here. Do you want me to shoot you? Would
you have me find a Judas goat as you did? You were going to
force the young men to drink this vile concoction. Now it is
your turn to drink. Those who do not drink may feel pain
again. Oh! You thought that if you ganged up on this one
woman that you would overpower her, without pain? I notice
that you all seem pretty brave when you are dealing with
boys, all the while you were holding guns. I notice you feel
pretty brave when there are more of you than just this one
woman. You would gang up on her? That makes you strong? None
of you can handle this lady all by yourselves? You need
help?"

Billy knew he was sending the wound deep. He knew he was
shaming them and that they might explode in a unified group.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Gat: How did we come to call a revolver a "gat"?

The name "gat" was originally applied to a machine gun
invented by Dr. Robert Gatling and first used during the
Civil War. But this gun had a cluster of ten barrels that
looked something like the chamber of a revolver - and so the
name was transferred to the revolver.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

A man walks into a restaurant with a full-grown ostrich behind him.

The waitress asks them for their orders. The man says, "A hamburger,
fries and a coke," and turns to the ostrich, "What's yours?"

"I'll have the same," says the ostrich.
A short time later the waitress returns with the order. "That will be
$9.40 please," and the man reaches into his pocket and pulls out the
exact change for payment. The next day, the man and the ostrich come
again and the man says, "A hamburger, fries, and a coke."

The ostrich says, "I'll have the same." Again the man reaches into his
pocket and pays with exact change.

This becomes routine until, the two enter again. "The usual?" asks the
waitress.

"No, this is Friday night, so I will have a steak, baked potato, and
salad," says the man.

"Same," says the ostrich.

Shortly the waitress brings the order and says, "That will be $32.62."

Once again the man pulls the exact change out of his pocket and places
it on the table.

The waitress cannot hold back her curiosity any longer.

"Excuse me, sir. How do you manage to always come up with the exact
change out of your pocket every time?"

"Well," says the man, "several years ago I was cleaning the attic and
found an old lamp. When I rubbed it, a Genie appeared and offered me two
wishes. My first wish was that if I ever had to pay for anything, I
would just put my hand in my pocket and the right amount of money would
always be there."

That's brilliant!" says the waitress. "Most people would wish for a
million dollars or something, but you'll always be as rich as you want
for as long as you live!"

"That's right. Whether it's a gallon of milk or a Rolls Royce, the exact
money is always there," says the man.

The waitress asks, "But, sir, what's with the ostrich?"

The man sighs, pauses, and answers, "My second wish was for a tall chick
with long legs who agrees with everything I say."
